Love Backdoor Sports! After visiting virtually every competitor in town in search of winter gear and Alpine Touring equipment, we wished we would have stopped here first. It would have saved us a bit of time.If youve never been to Backdoor Sports, know that it is not a ginormous box or chain store trying to sell everything under the sun. Its a smaller shop that carries top brands and gear built to last. And its not just for the die-hards or pros. The staff is passionate about what they do and sharing their vast expertise - no matter what skill level you may be at.And Willy, who appears in a number of these comments, truly rocks! π€ He went above and beyond in working with my wife and me in getting us in the right equipment. We will definitely be back for our other winter gear needs.
I highly recommend Backdoor sports! Willy is awesome and knows all things ski! Great customer service, I wouldnβt go any where else to get my tele bindings mounted.
Always a top notch experience when visiting!! Some of my favorite people work here. A little nervous about riding a bike but I am showed patience and a great sense of humor when explaining gears and the brake!! The little blue bike is just right.
Go see Willie! Cannot recommended this shop more for all of your ski needs, but ESPECIALLY for boot work. I have extremely narrow feet, but a large medial malleolus on my right ankle from an injury. I have struggle for years to get a boot fitted where I had the maximum performance fit I was after, that also didnt irritate that bone, especially while touring. Willie worked with me at the end of the season to get a boot and custom work done and I could not be happier. Awesome service and great people.
We walked up noon Friday and there was no wait. Willie was really nice and a big thank you for holding on to my sunglasses. River was flowing nicely and anyone can float this river. We had a great time for $23 and I highly recommend it.
We had a great time! The river was exciting l and swift in places and slow and relaxing in others. It was the best of both worlds! Willie was great and answered all of our questions with a smile and very attentive. We would recommend to everyone!
Willy was super friendly and helpful! He got us into a great set of life jackets for myself and my girlfriend. Was a fantastic experience!
Iβve been to Backdoor Sports one other time and loved tubing down the Yampa River in Steamboat Springs. This year, I brought my younger friends to tube with me (Iβm 70).Backdoor Sports provides water shoes if needed ($2) and super tubes ($20 with coupon). After an hour of fun tubing, they pick you up on a shuttle bus and bring you back to your car. This is something to plan for after June because of high water.
Get your gear here! Willy hooked me up with a sweet backcountry ski set up at a killer price. He was super patient, explained everything I didnt know, and taught me how to use my new gear.
Willie was very friendly and gave us some great information about kayaking the Yampa river.
Touring, telemarking, backcountry authority in Steamboat. Willie is super knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about you having the right equipment and βknow howβ to love the sport. I highly recommend this place. Keep up the great work!
Backdoor Sports has super knowledgeable, helpful, friendly staff. I love going there for the great vibe and great gear. Willie, Pete and the rest of the team can always help you out
Backdoor Sports is *hands down* the authority on river sports and backcountry skiing in Steamboat Springs.I have frequented this place ever since moving to town, and the folks in the shop consistently deliver with bomber gear and sage advice. Willy is the shop manager and is extremely knowledgeable about all things river related including rafting, kayaking, SUP, and multi day river trips. He recently helped me find the perfect raft for enjoying some sporty town laps and some bigger water on both the Elk and Upper Colorado.During the winter months the shop transitaons into the only true backcountry ski shop in town, and whether its your first time or youre a seasoned veteran, he can help you out with the gear and advice you need. Pete owns the place, and may as well be a local legend for the thousands of folks he has helped access the sports and terrain we all love so much. Thanks for keeping it rad, Backdoor!
Was in town for some spring skiing, a buddy and myself needed some ski boot work done. I needed work on some fischer boots and my buddy needed a buckle on a a few years old dalbello touring boot. Willie was able to style us out and get my buddy a slightly used demo pair of the exact same boot as well as do the required shell work to get us both out the door and skiing. I would very highly recommend the work done by this shop. Also very friendly with great local knowledge of the area.
Willie and everyone else at Backdoor were great! Great boot-fitting, and everything else you need!
Friendly, local and knowledgeable. Thanks to the crew for helping me with the selection and set up of my brand new back-country skis!
Made reservation for tubes in advance. Reservation was easy to make. Still had to wait in line though it was not horrible on friday. The guys at the check in were not really able to answer questions we had about tubing with the company or where the bathroom was. We were told a few different things.Shoe rentals are $5 not $3 listed on the website. The kid at the shoe area was confident, helpful, informative and friendly.Should have waivers online so they can be done in advance and not have to touch the papers and pens. The tubing was super fun. And my family was happy to have a ride back to the shop. Bus driver was nice and friendly.Overall good experience. A couple kids on staff just might need a little more coaching on how to deal with customers.
Love the attitude of this place! I can see how at times theyre busy. If you hit at a right time or call ahead, youll be in store for a great experience. My whole family went tubing and the staff at Backdoor Sports was extremely friendly and even entertaining. It felt like going out for a day of fun with your extended family. My son, daughter, wife and I all loved our experience and would recommend Backdoor Sports to anyone who is in the area looking for a great, relaxing time going down the Yampa River. The only sad part is when we went, the water was really low in the river and for a big guy like me, I needed to keep moving off the rocks. Nobodys fault but mine :)
Totally awesome backcountry sports shop. Willy is the man! This is a go-to/must-visit shop in Steamboat for anybody who enjoys backcountry skiing, climbing, camping, river sports, etc.
Incredible expertise, made my tele turns in steamboat memories of gold...
I cant say enough great things about Backdoor Sports!! I rented a 16β oarboat from Backdoor Sports a few weeks ago for a 4-day trip through the Gates of Lodore. Before the trip, I called all around Colorado and Utah looking for an oarboat and setup for a multi-day trip and all the companies either lacked the equipment we needed or their prices were outrageous. I finally called Backdoor Sports and they had everything I needed at amazing prices, with unbeatable customer service. Not only were they easy to work with and communicative, but the owner and employees (Peter, Mike, and Willie) were all extremely helpful and friendly, and weβre very flexible with pickup and drop off times, as well. Great dudes, great customer service, great prices!
I needed telemark skis for a class at CMC. Joey and Willy got me setup with a great deal for the entire class. They showed how to use the skis and features. In and out in under 10 minutes.
We had been recommended Backdoor Sports, and in particular, their tubing operation. I was extremely disappointed when I talked to a staffer. I called ahead, and was told that the tubing was βextremely busyβ, not in an informative manner, but a condescending and rude way. Instead of informing me that they simply didnβt have availability, he berated me by letting me know there was pandemic (which everyone is very well aware of). If they feel comfortable or have availability, we would have been fine being told such. However, the staffer lectured me for 2 minutes. As I told him, I am happy to take my business elsewhere, and I recommend other people do so.
We called ahead and booked reservations. When we arrived we had to wait in the same line as those who didnβt have reservations. We stood in line for 40 minutes or so. The staff seemed overwhelmed. It would be really helpful if they had the activity release online so people could sign and submit it ahead of time. But it was great to have a shuttle take us back to the shop after we tubed down the river. In hind sight, I wouldnβt wait 40 minutes to tube.
I love this place there always awesome people and great techs
Willy is an excellent tech and athlete. Hooked me up with a solid Tele-Mark and alpine touring setup, plus trail and tour advice
This seemingly tiny building is packed to the brim with all the gear you could ever need. Mountain biking, backcountry skiing, kayaking, climbing, and even some camping gear. Willy was great, gave me some tips for fatbike trails and beginner backcountry skiing spots nearby. Definitely worth stopping in!
Must tube down the Yampa River when you are in Steamboat Springs! Backdoor Sports had excellent tubes (and shoes if you forgot your own) and a speedy shuttle. Delightful.
So my tent suffered a large tear after a traumatic incident in a pond in Minnesota. After the manufacturer of the tent refused to repair the tent and then had me jump thru hoops to retrieve it, I was glumly wandering the streets of Steamboat Springs wondering what I was gonna do. My sweet little home (for the duration of my cross country road trip)...so sad!And then I happened on the magical oasis that is Backdoor Sports. Situated on the stunning Yampa River in a very cool building that half houses a bike shop with the sports shop at the back. The place is so welcoming and feels so cared for and lived in! The moment I walked in, Willy warmly welcomed me and lent his ear as I explained my plight. IMMEDIATELY he was like βI have this great stuff that I think will workβ. He recommended this amazing skin-like tape and explained that itβs helped him out many times on punctured rafts but that it can be used for just about anything.Well, it seemed to me like it would work - imagine that! A thoughtful solution in the blink of an eye! We ended up chatting about this repair project he was working on, he answered a ton of questions, recommended a campsite and hot springs for the evening snd just generally turned a terrible, aimless, hopeless feeling couple of weeks around in a matter of minutes. I really cannot stress how much kind and easygoing he was - the whole transaction was smooth and set me at ease. This may seem dramatique for a bit of repair tape but, being without my beloved tent made it tough to continue my trip. Instead of having to call it quits or sink a bunch of money into new equipment, I found solace in the gorgeous mountaintop campsite that Willy recommended and played tent surgeon! The stuff worked like a charm and Iβve been smooth sailing since!! Have camped in wind, rain and snow and havenβt had a single issue. The tape of flexible and seals tight. So much gratitude to Willy. Thank you for a wonderful recommendation and also for just being so kind.
Im a raft guide in town and frequent this place every time I need new gear. love this place. owner is a great feller .
Went tubing this last weekend and it was so nice! Staff was friendly, wait was short. Definitely recommend.
We had a wonderful experience with Back Door Sports. Peter was very friendly and helped us with every detail. Even when we overshot the Exit point, we were picked up down the road, with a smile and a joke. We will definitely take another tubing adventure with Back Door Sports!
Always so healpful, quick and easy. These bike repairmen do their job with a smile and do it well. Always going back with bike questions, theyre awesome.
Backdoor has the outdoor toys and the casual, helpful approach to help you gear up for your adventures. Pete set me onto the sweet Homegrown Touring skis from Steamboat Springs own Harvest ski company. Ill be enjoying the snow going both up and down the mountains!
I called to see if they were open on the 4th for tubing and if we needed a reservation. Peter gave me a lecture over the phone about not coming downtown and to go on a hike etc during a pandemic. Dude, if you dont want the business, you should have just closed for the 4th. Definitely left a bad taste in my mouth for this company. If you are too busy to accept customers, just say that....save the lecture.
Peter and his staff did an amazing job helping me find a great fitting telemark boot! I couldnt be more impressed by their professionalism and devotion to making things perfect. There is a tremendous energy and soul in this little shop and I feel fortunate to have stumbled upon it. There is a warmth here that is the real deal.
Pete & the staff are wonderful! Its great to have a place to rent river gear when family and friends are in town visiting. (To the guy who gave 1 star because they wouldnt let you tube the river when it was too high/fast, and too cold: They saved your life! A good business owner cares for the lives and safety of their patrons, over making money.) THANKS GUYS!
We floated down the river this morning. It was great. The little guys that helped us were wonderful! Canβt wait to do it again.
We were in Steamboat just a few days ago and my four year old scraped his knee right by Backdoor Sports. I didnt have a bandaid on me, and the employees there were kind enough to give me one for my son. It was a small act of kindness, but one that I really appreciate.
We had so much fun ~ floating The Yampa! Peter was especially kind and helpful! Great crew of people working at The Backdoor. This was my 4th time floating.
Pete is so helpful and has the best customer service!! Love the line of gear he carries too!!
It is a great little shop. Pete is a community treasure and a one of of kind. Can either take care of you or recommend someone who can.
I love this store.
Our church group of about 70 came tubing on July 3 - a very busy day for the whole town. Back Door got us through seamlessly and I heard good reports from everyone. There are other places in town but these guys are hands down the best. Very professional, knowledgable, and dependable.
Great shop! Owner has vast knowledge.
My family and I go rafting here when we are in town during the summer and we always have a great time. The guides are very friendly and knowledgable.
Took the fam tubing today. Owner and staff were super friendly and laid back. Weβll be back!
The owner was super helpful and they had a great selection of Norco and yeti bikes on hand. They also have a lot of fat tire bikes for the die hards!
Pete will make you happy local or not! Support small business!
Pete and his staff are amazing and know their stuff. Very rare to find that kind of customer first attitude these days.
My favorite ski and water sport shop in steamboat. Very knowledgeable staff. Locally owned and operated.
Fair prices. Very helpful and good looking staff. Thanks!
I first came to Backdoor Sports on a kayaking trip to the yampa valley about 20 years ago. Pete (the owner) and now Kevin (his main employee) have given me nothing but the absolute best in service, price, and advice. I would highly recommend this business for all of your outdoor needs!
My business was refused because the river that this business is located on was apparently too fast and cold. I have rented from this business before and had a great expierence. Sadly that will not be happening again. Best of luck turning away local business.
Just went tubing on the yampa from here last weekend. Really nice, helpful, friendly staff working here. Bus pickup was prompt and convenient.
Pete is super nice and helpful I will always buy stuff from him
Just finished dropping off our rental of a paddleboard and kayak...Hands down the best place to rent equipment. Coming from Nebraska for a family trip I called around to find out the best prices and information...Pete from Backdoor emailed me and when I spoke to him they gave me all the info needed. For being an out if towner I could not have asked for a better experience. Definitely coming back here for my equipmnet needs especially since we just purchased a vacation home. Thanks for making our trip amazing!
Come for the Dr. Stay for the Love!
Excellent Backcountry ski gear selection and knowledgeable staff.
Best go to place in town for tubing, renting telemark skis, kayaking, SUPing, rafting and all your climbing needs
The employees here were super helpful
So I wanted to take my family on a fun tubing adventure. Half way down the river there was a group of drunken tramps playing a ring toss game with an inflatable p#$!s and I steered my family away. I understand that backdoor sports is not responsable for all the drunken loosers that rent from them but after the tubing trip ended we went to wait for the bus and of course my family ended up sharing the bus with this group of sad narcissistic immoral hussies who had to continue making sex jokes with their little toy. I would have thought the bus driver or the worker riding with us would have said something. But no. When I returned to the rental place and filed my complaint I was told that there was nothing they could do for me. So in short, buy your own tubes. You will have a better time and avoid being stuck riding the bus with a bunch of drunken retards who live off their mommy and daddy s trust fund and are a pure suck on society.
Nice place, neat stuffed animals
Great service, friendly & provided a L.E discount!
Im sure this place is great during regular non-holidays, but on 4th of July its a mess. When its busy, youll have to elbow your way to a truck that brings the rafts back and yank rafts from others like it was a Red Cross relief truck in Somalia. They have dont have system for distributing rafts to those whove wait patiently (withy the exception of kids first). Might I suggest a line or anything! It was infuriating to have waited 30 minutes only to battle a snarky intoxicated chick who had just arrived for their next ride while Backdoor looks the other way. Also theres no way to prove youve paid for a raft, so anyone could just hop in and snag a raft. This is my review of the business, not the river. Of course the river is amazing, but Backdoor didnt think it through. Im sure they got an earful from more than just me today.
Excellent.
Lots of options for older used bikes, good prices
Best shop in town hands down!
Great attitude and service. Have rented family bikes and tag-alongs several times.
Went tubing, was a good time, would recommend.
Amazing service and pricing. Thank you!
Amazing family run sporting store!
My only complaint is it took me way too long to find this shop. A shop for the core user.
Planned our downtown Steamboat trip around tubingThey are open for tubing until 4. We get there at 330 and a handwritten sign is up saying tubing closed. They are sorry.
Always great people to help
Cross country skis for $12. Need I say more?
Guy helped me right away. Lots of stuff in that store too.
Great people
Go see Shawn down at Backdoor Sports!
Tubing was great!
Nice selection
Over priced
Friendly staff
