Always a highpoint of my visits to DC. Cheeses, olives, pasta, wine, oil, and meat. They make wonderful subs, but avoid lunchtime, as they are very busy, and parking is hard to find. Staff have a great work ethic.
My favorite place for Amaro selection... here 1 a month to pick my bottle and Max is a great guy... definitely a place to visit
Pricey. The area around it has grown way upscale. And so the prices. Selection of wines is amazing. Half the food items are available at grocery stores and the other half are not.
This place makes the best Italian sandwich Ive ever had. I get the Classic on a white sub roll with mayo and extra hot peppers. It never disappoints! They also have a nice grocery section and wine store.
Worth every bite. So good and fresh!!
My 1st experience & it was better than expected. Deli meat freshly sliced & quality bread. Kosher pickles, pasta salad & fresh olives are amazing. They stay busy & be ready for the wait. Not too long but long enough to prepare yourself for good eating.
Hidden gem in the Union Market area. Great selection of wines, liquors, and packaged Italian goods (pastas, seasonings, snacks). AMAZING sandwiches freshly made with aged prosciutto and fresh mozzarella. The sandwiches are so large for the price and a great value.
This place is the real deal. Its stocked with hard to find Italian imports and has a fantastic wine selection. Also makes the best hoagies outside of Philly.
I love this place! They never fail in providing me the freshest quality food.
Great little Italian market with large selection of wine, olive oils, balsamic, and pastas. Have refrigerated raviolis, lasagna, pizza and a counter for made to order subs, meatballs and sauce, meats and cheeses.
There is no better substitute in the District for all of your Italian cooking and drinking desires. Their wine collection rivals wine shops and has so much variety! The fresh cheeses and deli is a fun way to sample and try new products there, and they make sandwiches that people seem to be out the door for. Im glad I stumbled across this place because now I know where to come anytime I make an Italian meal.
*This is a must stop shop if you visit the Union Market area.* Impressive Italian market, Deli, and wine shop! James behind the deli counter and Max- the wine expert- are fabulous! All of their customized recommendations for gatherings have been a hit. If you are lucky enough to get there before they are sold out, they carry loaves of bread from a fabulous local baker (look to the left of the front door when you walk in). Note the market brought on more staff and extended hours given our neighborhood is growing in popularity!
Got the classic and was very happy to try it. I requested mustard as the condiment. When I got home, I opened it and there was mayonnaise. I cannot eat mayo (nor does it taste good) due to an egg allergy. I could not eat the sandwich.
The sandwiches were amazing. The owner allowed a few of us to sample cheese and they were all great. Will definitely be back.
Lots of nice wines that dont break the wallet. Always someone there to help pick out the perfect wine for the occasion. Also, every sandwhich Ive tried has been delicious.
Ive been popping in to this place for years. Always get a sandwich. It was always spot on until the changes in the last year or so. The quality of sandwich was a little spotty some times, but the last few times Ive ordered, with no crowd at the counter, Ive waited longer and longer, for smaller portions, and stale bread. There is one slice of turkey on my turkey sub.1 slice of turkey isnt a sandwich. Its a joke.A hard roll isnt supposed to be hard because its 3 days old.I legitimately just paid $10.50 for inedible garbage.Unless they train their folks to put a sandwich amount of fill on fresh bread, Ill hit Mangialardos on the Hill, or Italian Store in Va.Get your sammies together.
Great selection of pastas, and everything you might ever need for wine and cheese night. Sandwich was great value (in terms of portions) and quality for the price. Customer service was friendly - good atmosphere! Will be back :)
Excellent selection and reasonable prices. I walked out very happy. Got home and found some damage to one of my items that had gone unnoticed when in the store. Sent them a message and they immediately offered to make it right. Molto bene!
Best shopping experience ever with the highest quality of Italian products available in the Washington DC Area. This is now one of my top 3 favorites places and also when you go please take your time to look at the many selections of wine 🍷 and if you love a very consistent experience this will be your place of choice. Oh last thing take your time to have a amazing Italian Sub..and i dont mean like a chain restaurant, you will love this establishment and keep it on your list.
Max the owner was very kind and helpful. The wine selection is eclectic and tasteful. The gentlemen in the deli (sorry i forgot your name!) was the so friendly it was refreshing. Bought an Italian sandwich for lunch and wasnt even planning on it! Truly a hidden gem. Thanks Max!
A deli in the back of a hidden Italian store in an up and coming neighborhood in DC has to be good! Just a block from Union Market, A Litteri is a legit Italian store packed with Italian wines, cheese, meats, anything youd find Italy. In the back, theres a deli where you can build your own sandwich for cheap or order one of their already built subs. The chicken parmesan was great!
My dad has been bringing me here to get ingredients for our family recipes since I was a little girl. They always have everything we need and its wonderful to browse the incredible selection of wines and Italian products.
Excellent Italian subs and groceries. Good prices and a friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit.
Excellent place for Italian cooking items and great sandwiches.
Best deli on Florida Ave...HANDS-DOWN...
The most AMAZING little place in DC. Authentically Italian and deliciously wonderful. They have an incredible selection of wine, oils and a whole bunch of other delicious Italian edibles. We picked up a few sandwiches - chicken parm, the classic and a roast beef panini and they were just OUT OF THIS WORLD. We also picked up a slice of carrot cake which was really really good. The prices are extremely reasonable and the bang for buck value is high. They also have fresh cheeses, olives and what not that Ill be going back for.
A really great place for classic sandwiches, & salads..They have a nice wine selection, plenty of vinaigrettes, and olive oils to choose from..A. Litteri has a great atmosphere...
Great cold cut and old world Italian items. Store is a time capsule. Cant wait to go back and try something else. They do need to go back to selling pizza.
Such a hidden gem. Incredible for lunch or for stocking up on an amazing Italian dinner
Great sandwiches at the deli. Tons of products to see at reasonable prices.
I grew up in the suburbs, so I didnt know places like this still existed. They make the freshest deli subs from top-quality ingredients, whole, sliced meats, and fresh-baked bread. I now get lunch here at least twice a week. I come several more times a week for pantry items because their inventory is legit and affordable, their staff is hard working and knowledgeable, and the place is always spotless and clean-smelling. If you come for lunch, even during busy workday afternoons, they will have your order ready and have you out the door within 10 minutes. Usually far sooner. I finally met Max, who was happy to order me two rare, hard-to-find spices, one of which is regularly kept in stock (youll never find them, my girlfriend said.) So even if they dont have what you need theyll hook you up. I went home last night with a ball of fresh pizza dough, a fabulous bottle of Vinho Verde Max helped me pick out, and some brownie points for my lady. This store has become a staple to me, especially during COVID-19. It should be for you, too.
I had been told to go and try them out and I was impressed with the deli. A guy by the name of Johnny was really helpful in assisting me on the different choices and his customer services is above average. A. Litteri deli has so many different things to try. It’s like a taste of Little Italy in DC. I’ll definitely become a regular fan of this place.
I’ve been in the neighborhood since February and JUST found this place. I wish I had found it sooner. It is absolutely incredible. The deli is amazing but the store and products are equally fantastic. The BEST wine selection anywhere around and honestly anything Italian you could ever need. The prices are super reasonable for what you get. I will be back again and again and again.
Talk about a vast Italian market ! Literally one of the largest and oldest Italian markets in the area. This place never disappoints.
This place is legendary.
Fresh sandwiches. Way better than subway
Great customer service great food if you never been you gotta check this place out
Hands down the best Italian market in the region.
Had an incredible Italian sandwich, with some added roasted red peppers and fresh mozzarella. Can’t wait to go back for another!
I lived in Italy 18 years. Litteri is a place for REAL italian products. Im referring to genuine made in Italy foods, not the italo-American kind (which are also excellent - just not from Italy). Great dry pasta, wines, canned goods that can only be found in Italy.
Absolutely pitch-perfect Italian wines, deli, and grocery. And the nicest people.
Just discovered this gem today! Ordered 2 fantastic Italian subs, a chunk of sottocenere cheese, two mini cannolis, and two loafs of bread for $20! Everything was great, and I will be a regular customer.
Always a great experience. Yesterday was a classic sub, a meatball sub, some sausages for the grill, giardiniera, and jar of hoagie sauce. On foot that day, so skipped the million other things we wanted. The subs are nearly impossible to save half for the next day, they are that good. But if you can, they are even better the next day.Weave your way to the back of the store, grab a pencil and an order form. Dont forget to put your name on it. Sandwiches are an incredible value for the high quality you get.Keep your eyes peeled for the unobtrusive art and memorabilia that a store like this collects over the years. Floor-to-ceiling Italian goodness.
Amazing and one of DC’s gems if you are looking for a killer sandwhich or a nice bottle of wine
A.Litteri is still a major player in the Union Market area during the massive transformation. Ive been going here for years and they still have a huge following. The staff is amazing with sharing samples and encouraging you to try different meats, pastas, cheeses and other items in stock. You may have a short wait when the lunch crown comes in. Consider ordering online or calling in your order. Part of the wait is enjoying the items on the shelf and the set up of the store. I make it a point to stop by once a week and wish they were open on Mondays. You will be very happy with your selections and will return without question.
Wow, what happened? Used to get A+ sammiches but todays was terrible, esp dried out hard roll. I see other complaints attributing this to new management. Too bad, but then again, saves a trip across the river.
Great sandwiches...
Legendary DC Italian deli & marketplace! Their sandwiches & paninis are marvelous as they are made with fresh ingredients & generations of experience. Their marketplace features a great variety of Italian olive oil & balsamic vinegar of a fine range of grades & quality. Much of their pasta, gnocchi, risotto, and marinara options cant be found in other stores around the area. Then there is their Italian wine selection...it is a beautiful sight and they have so much to offer that I dont see at other stores. They have all my favorite Italian wines such as Amarone, Montepulciano dAbruzzo, Barrolo, & Pinot Grigio.
Amazing place! Great selection of Italian goods in DC and an amazing Deli.
Wine, olive oils, vinegars, fresh and dried pasta, and a great deli sammich counter in the back. Cant miss this old school gem in a rapidly changing neighborhood should not be missed and deserves its place here since the 1920s.
Subs like from New Jersey/New York. Get store for specialty Italian items.
An incredible collection of wine!
Max and James are doing great things with this place. Great subs, great salads, and a huge selection of every Italian need you have.. Keep up the good work guys.
All things Italian! I wish they sold pizza. Hope they can remain in there location would be disappointed if they leave DC. Bought myself a T shirt.
Best subs money can buy
An absolute hidden gem right by union market and basically what you would find at a market in Italy. The deli has a great variety of meats, cheeses and marinated veggies. Their Italian sub is a must get as well. 12/10 would recommend.
Very nice place food is 5 🌟
As authentic Italy as you can find in DC. Great selection of wines.
The best Italian cold cuts!!!
Classic Italian deli established in 1926. Its a remnant of the old Italian American neighborhood that existed there until their flight to the suburbs. U can get all the Italian food items that I grew up with and arent available at supermarkets. A must visit.
Go here often to grab a sandwich for lunch - the prices are great and the food is delicious! It’s the bread they use that leaves the best impression.
Good cold cuts sandwichesExcellent services during this covid
Go to the cheese counter and ask them to customize a small spread for you. Incredible cheeses, but also genuine small business customer service.
Exceptional subs.
Reasonable prices and fantastic authentic ingredients
Great wine selection and wide selection of oils and vinegars!
This place is like going back in time. The atmosphere is so cool and they have so many good food and wine offerings. And, the sandwiches are legendary. I love when I get a chance to go there.
Ive been going there for many years for their Italian cold cut SUBS ON HARD ROLL. THEYRE UNDERNEATH MANAGEMENT BUT THE FOOD IS THE SAME!I ALSO BUY ITALIAN ROLLS THERE
Little pricey, but great selection
When near Union Market, stop by A. Literri for some wine and the BEST deli sandwiches ever! The deli is tucked way in the back of this wonderful Italian wine & food store. You’ll feel like a local finding your way through the maze of wine to this hidden deli.
Got the best sandwich 🥪 😋 in town
Near authentic italian ingredients and deli service.
Great choice for italian food in dc
The best place hands down.....A walk thru Italy....one bite at a time
Seriously the best Italian sandwich in the DC area. Im a big fan of Italian sandwiches, and have tried my fair share around DC, and A. Litteris is hands down the best. Good bread, perfect amount of fillings, not too much oil. This is a bit of a hidden gem, and is right around Union Market. If you like old school Italian grocery stores and Italian sandwiches, youll love this place.
The best
Delicious sandwiches, great pre-made food and Italian ingredient selection, and a really impressive wine selection!
Huge selection of wine, though it’s stored on its base, so buy young. The subs are made to order. Lastly, there are some cool things like chinotto sodas that are hard to find here.
This is a jewel on the hill! They recently changed management and I think the changes are all positive. The sandwiches have always been top notch but they seem better now. Huge fan they are closed on mondays I think
Got what I needed and the new [not so new, but we have been customers for years] folks were pleasant and efficient.
We can never let this place close down. I love their subs and everything about their shop. They are stocked for homemade Italian dishes. You can buy their products and pretend you made them from scratch.
Local Italian stuffs, no fakes here. Great store.
Great place for everything Italian with the best selection of Italian wines
What a fun place to shop for all kinds of Italian treats from cookies and cannoli to lots of exotic kinds of pasta. My husband and I must have spent 20 minutes in the olive oil and balsamic vinegar aisle alone. Fabulous. Highly recommended, but parking is horrid and the store is quite small, so be prepared.
Amazing Italian Sandwiches. Also huge selection of Italian Staples. Delicious, genuine, friendly. A must visit. Start with the Classic. The variety of delicious Italian food products is outstanding.
They have such variety of wine, spices, and oils. They have premade food you can warm up at home. The highlight are definitely the sandwiches they make.
Always a great experience and excellent food
This place is awesome for many reasons. First and foremost its old school. Best Italian sandwiches in the city. The market is also fantastic. Amazing selection olive oils and all things Italian.
So happy with the quality of service I get consistently, the new guys are awesome! They know me and are so much more friendly. There is a new apartment building going up across the street and Im not necessarily looking forward to how crowded it will be, but the wait is always worth it.
Perfect Italian market with a great wine selection and knowledgeable staff. The deli is my first stop for Italian meats and they make great sandwiches too! Worth a stop if only to peak inside. A Union Market gem for sure!
Do yourself a favor and get a sandwich from here! Not to mention the great selection of wine, cheeses and deli meats.
Went for a late lunch. Its been years since I last went. The sandwiches and subs all looked great. I love the build-a-sandwich or sub ability. They were doing this long before Subway restaurant. My cold cut sub was great. Ill be coming back often!
Amazing selection of Italian foods and wine!
Best italian market in town.
