Great small museum with a collection of mostly modern art but also some impressionist and post impressionist. There are two buildings, an older mansion and a modern building. This is a great museum but buy tickets before you go! Tickets sell out fast and they only let you see the first floor if you don’t have one. You have to wear your mask and stay socially distanced, but it’s still a nice experience. Still lots of great artwork and a very nice museum gift shop. Highly recommend!

The Phillips Collection is Washington DC is a must-see if youre interested in modern and contemporary art. Work predominantly ranges from the era of Impressionism to contemporary times, though you will find at least one work from the 1600s (an impressive repentant St. Peter by El Greco). Though the highlights are many for this relatively small collection, some of them include half of Jacob Lawrences Migration Series (the other half is at MoMA), Renoirs Luncheon of the Boating Party, Georges Braques The Round Table, and the ineffably beautiful Rothko Room. Curatorially, the growing collection is unique in that works often speak or reflect each other: an early self-portrait of Piet Mondrian gives weight the radicalness of his Abstract work. An Orozco drawing of a revolutionary carrying her child on her back and going off to battle is heart-breakingly echoed in a photo of a family carrying a childs coffin to a burial place. Janet Taylor Picketts And She Was Born visually speaking directly to Henri Matisses Interior with Egyptian Curtain. The collection is near DuPont Circle and may seem a trek from the various Smithsonian art galleries and museums, but its a journey worth taking.

A great museum with a fine collection of 19th and 20th century masters, with the courage to display contemporary artists just getting their start. That, combined with the fact that it is an old and noble house that is the anchoring architectural piece and you have just about the perfect museum. Not so hot: parking. There are many of us who do not live in the DC area and also have mobility problems, so its difficult to use Metro and to walk to the museum, and then spend two to three hours on your feet. I wish there were set aside for handicapped people.

The first modern art museum, it remains a gem! Skillfully housed in Duncan Phillips historic home and newer additions, the space is the perfect home for the art work. The permanent collection is lovely, and their special exhibitions are always well curated and thought provoking. An added bonus, the permanent collection is free on weekdays.Theres a wonderful family gallery, at a childs eye level, with intriguing questions, colorful cushions and an excellent nook with great art books to read during a break. To complete your experience, both the museum shop and Cafe are delightful. Paintings Ive never seen before suddenly appear, making every visit special. Renoirs Luncheon of the Boating Party and Jacob Lawrences Migration Series are must-sees. I visited a few weeks ago and while the art was amazing the experience was very uncomfortable. I understand their need to take COVID precautions but the museum seemed overstaffed. So much so that there was someone following us in every room we visited. At one point we were looking at a video exhibit about the history of discrimination in America. For the full five minutes, one of the staff stood at the doorway facing us and stared at us. It was unnerving. Further into the museum, one staff member followed us between rooms and was intently watching us. When we moved back and forth between two rooms they followed... It was very uncomfortable! As a minority, I would say maybe wait until COVID precautions lighten up before visiting. If folks from Phillips see this, it would help to diversify your staff or train them to create a more welcoming environment.

I visited The Phillips Collection today. I appreciate that the museum has an endowment, or some sort of income that enables curators to continue to purchase art and have special exhibits. However, I was primarily there for the permanent collection, as I have a special affinity for early-to-mid 20th century modern art.I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED that the Rothko room, which was one of my main motivators to see the museum, was surrounded by The Warmth of Other Suns, a temporary, only-for-pay exhibit. It wasnt financially possible for me to pay to see the exhibit, and thats not mostly what I wanted to see anyway. One docent quietly told me that I should just walk into the Mark Rothko room, and if anyone questioned my presence, proclaim that it IS part of the permanent collection and that I should be allowed to see it. And thats what I did, along with my oldest daughter. However, it shouldnt feel clandestine to visit what should be open for visitors to the permanent collection!! What is more: I was HORRIFIED that there was a piece from TWoOS in the Rothko room, and further horrified by the audio file that looped, loudly and relentlessly!!! SO WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS. That room is supposed to be a chapel; a place of repose and contemplation. I cant tell you how tremendously disappointed I was in my highly-anticipated experience of the Rothko room. Here I am, traveling from Arizona, in the DC area for two weeks, and I have told people far and wide that likely my most anticipated experience was the Rothko room at The Phillips Collection. And now I will tell and re-tell the story of how poorly the museum is set up, how awkward it makes it -- intentionally, I feel -- for free visitors, and what a deflating, disappointing, dissonant experience it ended up being.I have been to countless museums that have a for-pay or extra-pay area for special exhibits. However, Ive never been in a museum where the special exhibit is so integrated into the passageways of what should be public, and then we feel like we have to walk with eyes downcast, moving quickly, to access what we should be able to access. I dont know who planned that, but it is a truly horrible arrangement.

I am an Emergency Room physician and art enthusiast. I saw the touring Phillips Collection in 2005 in Cleveland. My wife and I were very eager to see the pieces in the museum when we were visiting DC last week. We had tickets for Saturday afternoon at 2:00. Other private museums that we visited in DC last week required masks, although the National Gallery of Art did not for my wife and I who are both a few months out from our second vaccination, so we were not that surprised that your museum still required masks. However, the temperature check at admission, which would not read my temperature due to my height (64), and finally after 4 or 5 failed attempts, a staff person using the forehead thermometer checked my temperature. There have been numerous peer-reviewed articles showing the lack of efficacy of temperature checks in detecting asymptomatic covid.Furthermore, the water fountains are still closed. Per the CDC, ones chances of contracting covid via a fomite, like a water fountain is 1 in 10,000.Also, they still have fairly strict limitations on room capacity and attempt to maintain a flow of traffic with various arrows on the floor. New York and California opened fully last week.I understand that the Phillips is a private institution and may dictate policy as they see fit, but to employ these draconian policies, to vaccinated individuals, at this stage of the pandemic, after they have been demonstrated to be ineffective, made our experience rather unenjoyable. We do not plan on visiting/ supporting your institution again.

The Philips Collection is one of the premiere modern and contemporary art museum in the United States. Located on 21st Street near Dupont Circle, this is a must-see attraction for art fans, particularly those with interest in late 19th and 20th century art genres.Entry to view the main collection is by donation but there is a fee for viewing exhibitions ($12 per adults). Opening hours are 10am to 5pm (Tues - Sat) with extended hours to 8.30pm on Thursday, 12pm to 7pm (Sun). The museum is closed on Mondays. The museum is based upon the collection of Duncan and Marjorie Acker Philipps and was founded in 1921 as the first museum of Modern Art in America. Here you can view works by household names when it comes to Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary art. Renoir, Cezanne, Degas, Van Gogh, Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Whistler, Calder, OKeeffe, Rothko amongst others are represented within the Philips Collection. In addition to the excellent collection of art, the property itself is delightful if you enjoy architecture and historic buildings. This is a Georgian Revival style house constructed in the late 19th century. It is recognised on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States. The Music Room in particular is worth spending time to view. The wooden panel carvings above and around the fireplace is particularly impressive. In the end, The Philips Collection is a very good collection. We very much enjoyed our recent visit and would happily return during future trips to D.C. Best to allow 1-2 hours to view the full permanent collection and to enjoy exhibitions being held during the time of your visit.Note: The Philips Collection has a very good website. Here you can get a preview of the collection highlights as well as current and future exhibitions that are to be held.

This is Americas first modern art museum and it holds quite an impressive permanent collection, including a number of Renoirs, Rothkos, and a couple Mondrians. It doesnt just have early 20th century modern works, but also showcases more contemporary artists as well. At present, the Phillips Collection is hosting two special exhibits. The first features George Condo and the second features Markus Lupertz in collaboration with the Hirshorn. Both collections dominate the first and third floors. My only complaint is that presently the museum is renovating the original building, which I felt was better suited for its permanent collection, and due to the decrease in space, has cut the number of permanent pieces on display. It is also more crowded due to the smaller space. Overall, it is a good, small, art museum with a fair collection and is certainly worth visiting.

Even one of my favorite expressionists (Franz Marc) made it into the Phillips Collection. They have a superb variety of artists and styles. I like how they displayed the paintings. The rooms are decent sized so you don’t have to squeeze yourself through masses of people gathered around a single painting.
