Loved this little coffee shop! The food, coffee and service was wonderful. During the off season they are only open on certain days... I had waited a few days to experience this place and it did not disappoint!!! So many foodie options! Try this place!!!

Quality takes time, but not too much here. Best sandwich of any kind Ive ever had. Are semi-sweet chocolate torte with raspberry has spoiled me for any other kind of sweets.Update: Just cant get enough of the 1690! Getting my favorite today, roast beef!

Good coffee, good tea, good pastries, and good sandwiches is what youll find at the 1690 House. This is a quaint, comfortable shop. Its a good place to nibble, relax, and reflect in the give-and-take library while you catch up on your reading.Handicap parking is well placed. You may find the gravel lot challenging for a wheel chair. My only complaint is the staff. They are cold and aloof. They properly fill the orders, but project an attitude of being bothered. More smiles and a thank you for your patronage would complete the 1690 House package.

This place was simply fabulous. A touch expensive, but actually worth the price. The pastry chef is simply a wizard. We had the almond peach tart, summer berry tart and affogato as well as a peanut butter cookie and a molasses Ginger cookie. The shortcrust on the tart was pure heaven and everything was well balanced and not overly sweet. It was best because we could eat it in the screen porch in the back yard or the Adirondack chairs in the front garden which is exactly where a tea time snack should be had. If you dont stop here, you are seriously missing out. Also one of our cookies was gluten free and I could not have told you which one.

So glad we stayed in town through this morning. This shop is super cute and idyllic of a small town NE breakfast joint (at least, from a Midwest perspective). The decor is great, service is top notch and the food both looked and tasted even better than expected.Dont be fooled -- their breakfast sandwiches will fill up most people. If youre in or around Wells, make sure you stop in! We definitely will the next time were up here.Pictured is The Brandon & The Kristen

I was truly blown away by the gluten free desserts here. Hands down the best I’ve EVER had. I just recently moved here from Portland, OR and we have a few nationally renowned gluten free bakeries and they don’t even compare. The raspberry almond muffin was full of fresh raspberries and almonds, it was light, the texture was perfect and it wasn’t overly sweet. The blueberry muffin was equally delicious. The peanut butter cookie, that one could get me in a lot of trouble, I could’ve eaten a dozen. Salty, peanut buttery goodness; again the texture was spot on. I honestly couldn’t tell any of it was gluten free, (no hives so I knew I was in fact in gluten free heaven). I also purchased the mini carrot cakes for my family (the actual reason why I came) and they all loved it! I made it just in time before they closed and the gentleman who helped me gave me two more of the gluten free muffins! So kind, so unexpected. Pricing was cheaper than I expected, especially when you consider the quality of the items.

This place is a great breakfast and brunch spot as like a quick service. Both of our sandwiches were delicious and our coffee was so good! They should have a line out the door. We were there on a Thursday, so maybe it’s busier on the weekends. Their sign is really small though and there’s a tree that partially blocks it. The building looks like an old house, so as many times as we passed it during our 3 week stay, we only knew it was there because of a google search for breakfast near us.

We stopped in here for the first time today and will definitely be back! Amazing coffee and the homemade bread and biscuits made the breakfast sandwiches we had extra delicious. The baking was so good we couldnt resist grabbing a piece of pumpkin bread for the road, which did not disappoint! Aside from the food, the historic building is really lovely and a unique and beautiful backdrop. There is even a screened porch and backyard with a tire swing for the warmer months. The owner and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. If you are in the area and 1690 House is open definitely stop in!

Wow, this is an incredible establishment that is by far the best Breakfast/Lunch we have ever had in our lives. From the beautiful exterior to the interior that transports you to a French land, this place is it. I will forever come back to this Bakeshop every time I come to Maine. The ingredients were fresh and bright with an incredibly composed menu that doesn’t disappoint. We had to force ourselves to leave because we could have sat in the Bakeshop for the entire day. I manage restaurants and this place is top notch. There is no reason to eat anywhere else in Maine unless you are looking for seafood. You will not be disappointed.

We stopped for lunch this weekend, and really enjoyed it. It is a big old house, with one of the downstairs living rooms set up as a bare bones Cafe. You order from the bar as you enter, and they bring the food out. We had the avocado toast and a delicious pumpkin soup, both vegetarian and superb! The seating area is very basic, hard seats and old tables, but it does have a library of books you can read and borrow while you are there. Dont expect table cloths and place settings. The food was great, we would definitely return next time we are in the area.

This is some really excellent food. That said it is one of the more expensive places to grab something to eat in town, but in my opinion the quality is worth it. Enjoying the offerings here is an experience for your taste buds if you appreciate higher end dining.

Two amazing chefs bake and ensemble heavenly breakfast and lunch sandwiches on fresh baked breads that keep restocking on the display. The tea selection is small but accommodating and so is the coffee. But even for a coffee connoisseur who craves something more delectable to drink, the pastries will keep her coming. I shared a rich croissant sandwich with excellent brie and ham. The croissant was up there in the ranks with them if not a notch above it all.

Stumbled upon this gem the other day before trail hiking. The food is incredible and made from the highest quality ingredients. We decided to try it based on reviews as we are from out of town, but dont bother. Staff not friendly, food was mediocre and the coffee wasnt good. We ended up throwing out our coffees and heading elsewhere. Dont go if undecided, staff doesnt like to wait for you to review the menu.

I cannot say enough positive things about this café!! Their pastries and sandwiches are superb. At first we would just get some pastries and iced coffee (also delish) anytime we were nearby, but we tried their sandwiches one day and were hooked on them as well; fresh ingredients and homemade bread! Everyone that works there is very nice and efficient :) We are locals, and have struggled to find a café that is accessible and makes quality food (without being overwhelmed by traffic or easy access to downtown during peak season) and it is such a pleasure we found this gem....so go check it out-you won’t be disappointed 😊
