I came down for a weekend with friends and my car started to make a scary noise. Thinking it was something bad I called and these guys stayed late and offered to hook me up with quick help. I’m only 18 and live on my own. They got my car in that night, helped me calm down after thinking it could be a wheel bearing, got my bearings looked at, and fixed my car. They even stayed late for me. It made me weekend and if I lived in the area I would definitely take my car here.
These guys are great to work with. Services are very affordable and honest. Lowest price check engine light inspection in town. Can usually schedule an appointment within a week, or possibly sooner if an issue arises related to a previous service. Thanks guys!

I 1000% recommended this Auto Service Center. I’m a 20 year old college student and when I left for work this morning, my car had a horrible grinding noise coming from it. I needed to get into work and had a 7 hour drive to do right after work - I had no time to have car troubles right now! Thankfully, I called Tuffy’s and they said they could get me in as soon as I could get there. I waited a short time and they gave me a quote and guaranteed that they would get it done no matter what. I was having some car issues about a month or so ago, & I am so glad that I brought my car to Tuffy! They truly went above and beyond to get my car repaired, I was amazed by their level of customer service! It really shows that they care about their customers and want to help. I went in for an oil change and they also noticed power steering fluid and brake fluid needed flushed. They offered to do it and gave me a discount on getting it done! I knew both things had not been done before! I trusted them that it needed done and they were very nice about it. I compared prices after I left and the price was very reasonable and lower. The guy at the front desk was very knowledgable and broke things down for me to understand.
Went in to get new tires put on my Challenger. After sitting in the office for 4 plus hours and witnessing the installer lose my tire off the machine and it hit the ground I had concerns. They finished after closing time and I drove straight home afterwards. The next day I inspected my wheels and noticed quite a bit of damage to my wheels and parts of my car. Scartch by the door and dented in parts of the interior of my trunk. I contacted them about the damage and was asked to bring it in so they could inspect the wheels. I was told by the installer that he didnt do it that it must have been that way because his tools or machine wouldnt cause damage or someone did it on purpose or drove through gravel and hit them with gravel. Which is impossible. After weeks of the manager dodging my calls an not returning calls finally me physically going into the shop I finally got a resolution after going to a few places for quotes myself they agreed to pay for the repairs to my wheels. Nothing was ever said about the other damage and after requesting to speak to the owner nothing ever came of that either. Im assuming the manager was trying to save face and didnt ever talk to the owner. I will not be going back here and would recommend steering clear of this location.
Well be back for life after Brian made sure we were happy customers. The work quality was fantastic and the price was very fair. You could see it was more important to Tuffy to do whats right instead of what makes them the most money. Ill recommend them to everyone I know.
I went to Brian after reading the google reviews and I must say - What you read is exactly what you get!!! My entire experience was extremely satisfactory. I wanted to get something replaced, which no other auto shop in the area was willing to take on, and he did, no questions asked. He even did a 21 point inspection on my car and topped up some fluids at no extra charge !!! The work was good and swift...I would highly recommend them, if you are someone who is looking for a good, honest auto shop. They will not suggest any work on your car unless its absolutely necessary...Brian is an awesome person !! Tuffy is lucky to have a manager like him on board.

Ive been taking my car here for a couple years and I have always had a good experience. The work is done quickly and done well. Both Kevin and Brian take the time to explain why certain things need to be done, what can wait and what is more urgent, and they make recommendations based on what you want out of your car. If youre looking to just get by for a couple years, theyll tailor their recommendation to that, or if you want to get a ton more life out of your car, theyll make recommendations based on that. Theyve also told me point blank when I dont need work done that I thought I did and they always look for good deals on parts to keep your costs low. Its hard to find a mechanic who wont scam you, especially as a woman, but these guys have been great every single time.

I had work done here before on another vehicle. My wife noticed noise coming from the rear brakes. I brought it here to have it looked at. I was told that the rear brakes had disintegrated and needed to be done now that it wasnt safe to drive and the front brakes were close. The were other issues that were spot on. I opted to change them myself saving a good chunk of change. I was appalled when I took the back drums off and they were fine, maybe 3-4 months I would need to replace them. The front had at least 50 percent of their life left. I will not come back here because I felt like I was being scammed.......
Brian was awesome. He sent someone to my apartment to jump my car and had a new battery in and an oil change done in less than an hour. He even came out and chatted a little to keep me company while I was waiting.

While traveling to Arkansas for Thanksgiving from Minnesota our vans alternator started to go out. We could not find any mechanic that would fix it. Every place we called we were told it would take 3 to 4 days to get to and one guy even said 2 weeks. We were 45 minutes from Des Moines, Iowa but luckily with the grace of God we called Tuffy Tire & Auto Service and spoke to Mr. Brian Heatherly. Mr. Heatherly assured us if we could make it in 45 minutes he could get us in that day and it would take two hours to fix. It took us 1 hour and eight minutes to get to the shop yet Mr. Heatherly still took us in. I had my mom who had just gotten out of the nursing facility from having back surgery done with me. Mr. Brian offered us water and made sure we were fine. He then took it upon himself to go help the other mechanic with the job to speed up the process. For the job to take 2 hours to do we were out the door in 1 hour and 32 minutes. This place also has a handicapped accessible bathroom which was perfect for my mom whose is still on a walker. The funny thing is by it being a mechanic shop I thought the restroom would be filthy. It wasnt but as clean as my house even cleaner than some of my friends. Mr. Brian I would like to thank you for turning a terrible day into an awesome day. You have a wonderful personality and even joked with us by saying I see you guys tried to run from the snow in Minnesota but brought the snow down here to us since it did start snowing upon our arrival. Keep up the good work and dont change anything about yourself Mr. Brian. Tuffy Tire & Auto should be pleased to have you on their team.
Seriously cannot recommend this place enough! Brian, the manager, is a stand-up, straight shootin’ guy. I brought in my ‘08 Grand Prix for some “fun” modifications, and he and his team did absolutely stellar work! In particular, after one visit, the pin attaching my down pipe to my catalytic converter busted off. I brought it back the next day and it was fixed at no charge. I would highly recommend you take your vehicle here for service, or for fun ;) lol thank you Brian and the Grand Tuffy team!

Went in to diagnose a noise in the front in. Was given a long list of items that were broken, and needing repair. We agreed to use used part to reduce cost. Was told my steel rim was bent.First test drive of the car the vehicle makes a screeching sound that was impossible to miss. There was no way they did a proper road test of the vehicle before returning the car back to me.What is worse, the shaking that I spent a good chunk of change to correct was still there. They completely misdiagnosed the problem, and the used wheel bearing they put on was spent.I had to take the car to two other places to fix the wheel bearing and the shaking problem. They gave me a deal of a price to replace the wheel bearing, and the other place I went to was almost 100$ less.I wont return, and I suggest taking your vehicle somewhere else.

This place is excellent. They closed at 6pm and I called them at 5:45pm and asked if they could do a wheel alignment. They told me to come right over and gave me above and beyond service. They also spotted that the last place I took my car put the lug nuts on backwards and fixed that for me. They ended up working 30minutes after they closed to get me back on the road driving safely. They were gentlemen and top professionals. I highly highly recommend them.

Went to have my Nissan Rogue 2012 serviced and I also had a particular problem which was NOT diagnosed by 2 different Nissan service centers. They did the diagnosis successfully explained me the problem and replaced the needed part for a reasonable price. I will go there again. Thanks.
Be very careful when dealing with Tuffy and Wade. Between my children and grandchildren we have spent thousands of dollars at Tuffy. The last one was my granddaughters car. She had slid into a curb one icy morning and bent the rim of her tire. I told her to take it to Tuffy because I trusted them. What a shock when she was told she shouldnt drive the car because it was dangerous and needed $4,200 in repairs. We asked for an itemized list of needed repairs and took it for a second and third opinion. Both other places said it needed struts and to replace the rim and a couple other things. They said the itemized list had wrong part numbers and didnt even include the obviously bent rim. Total cost was $900. When I placed a negative review on their web site, I got a call from Wade saying the $4,200 wasnt the real price we would have paid that he had padded it so we could possibly get money from the dealership it was purchased. This was contrary to the $4,200 Wade verbally quoted to my daughter. Makes me wonder about all the repairs we paid for on other cars. Surprising that my review never made their web site.
Rock stars. I went in without an appt. to see if I could get a front headlamp replaced. They estimated 30 minutes, but I was out the door in 15 minutes! Not only did they install the new bulb, they tucked in part of the fender that had somehow popped out near the headlamp. And put my new plates on the car (just moved here from out of state). Above and beyond! Thanks, guys!
This place was amazing! We were in Des Moines visiting family on a holiday weekend and Kevin was able to fit us in for repair on an Audi. If anyone has tried to find last minute repairs on an import, you know its almost impossible. The staff was knowledgeable, efficient, and friendly. Wonderful service! I just moved to the area and needed a tire patched and an oil change. Came here and was helped quickly even at the end of the day near closing. The manager, Patrick, explained everything and was friendly and helpful. Amazing! The Tuffy team has been my go to mechanic for the last several years and I couldnt be more impressed with their customer service and performance! I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler with over 200K miles thats is still running fabulous thanks to their continued routine maintenance and kind care for my old treasure! They work hard to make sure my vehicle is safe and road worthy, while never making me feel like they are trying to charge extra for services it doesnt need. Ive referred many friends and acquaintances their direction...you cant go wrong!
I bring my car to Tuffy because I trust Kevin to tell me what I need to do for the best upkeep, without worrying that they are trying to upsell me services I dont need(Im not well-versed in car stuff.) Good service that I trust!
I called in at 2:45, needing an oil change. I brought my car over at 2:55 and they had it completed by 3:45. Flexible and very punctual.
Pray that you don’t break down in this part of the state. Seems like most mechanics aren’t honest. I know this isn’t actually helpful (as a review) but the real story takes too long and requires mentioning several shops. Moral or the story though, just hold off on making repairs to vehicle until out of this area. This specific shop had an arrogant associate working the front counter who on multiple occasions thought it was appropriate to raise his voice with me whenever I questioned his opinions.
I called and described the problem and he quickly diagnosed the issue. Made an appointment for the following day and my questions were answered. But the best thing is I was in and out in about 30 minutes and now I have air conditioning again! I will return with future repairs and maintenance.
Brian the store manager not only got our vehicle in last minute he was extremely courteous and gave his professional opinion. I cannot recommend this guy and this place enough!

I have taken both of my cars I have owned here and I have always had excellent service. Everyone is so kind and they know me by my name. I have never had an issue with them they always explain to me what is causing the issue in my car for whatever reason I have brought it in what they can do to fix it. Wade is very welcoming and extremely nice. All the mechanics know what they are doing and can find a way to explain what is wrong and how they can fix it in a way I can understand. My parents bring their cars here and never complain and I have recommended people who have had a bad experience at other shops to come to Tuffys on Grand and they all were satisfied. Overall experience has been great!
I dont usually do reviews, but my visit here worth writing one. Tommy at Tuffys had me in and out of the shop efficiently and extremely timely. He knew right away what the problem was and the best solution. I appreciate his expert knowledge and customer service skills. This will be my new service center for sure!

Recently moved to WDM, unfamiliar with auto shops in the area. Tuffy was close by and had good reviews online so I chose to go with them. Took in my SUV not knowing what the issue was, just that it was driving loudly and vibrating. Tuffy was able to get me in the same day I called. Dropped off the vehicle and went to work. Tuffy did a full inspection of the vehicle and called me with an hour or so to tell me exactly what the problem was, the approximate cost to fix, and their recommendations on brands, etc. in relation to what I could afford to spend. We discussed the best options for my budget and they were able to fix it that day and get it back to me that evening in much better shape.
Had an awesome experience today with Patrick in getting an estimate for repairs for my vehicle. He was kind enough to only charge me half the cost of the checkup. Was even kind enough to tell me that it may be a better idea to get rid of the car, than having it serviced because of the price of the vehicle. Very grateful for Patrick and his staffs help, will be going back to Tuffy from now on.

Staff is friendly and helpful. Mechanic didnt protect my floor mats from dirt and got grease on my drivers door panel. Labor rates are fair but parts are more expensive than OEM at full retail. Best to compare prices before committing to repair due to parts prices.

Took my car to the one on Grand Ave. Replaced all my rotors less than a year ago and now all 4 of my calipers and rotors have gone bad since then. So I took my car to a different place this time and costed me almost $1,000 to replace my calipers and rotors. I chalked it up to coincidence until I found out my brother took his car there for a rotor job and abs fix they suggested recently. He took it back a couple more times because they couldnt get the abs fixed correctly. Now his car dies in parking lots randomly the same week his car was fixed. We replaced his car battery and the problem is still there. His car never had this problem before. This could all be a coincidence, but this now makes 2 bad experiences from this place. Not going risk going back again.
We took our Sienna in for a Maintenance Required light on the dash board. Thats Toyotas way of saying its time for an oil change. We did that and found out our Power Steering system needed a good flushing. Afterwards the Van is running very well and even the electric driver seat started working again. Thanks guys!

I recently had a very negative experience at CarX (was overcharged and they missed a serious safety issue). I took my car in to Tuffy because I wanted to try someplace else and Im so glad I did! Patrick was great--he went over exactly what the issue was with my car, showed it to me and showed me the parts he was going to replace it with, went over the bill with me item-by-item, and even went out of his way by giving me a great deal since he realized Id been screwed over elsewhere! I left feeling like he was sincerely concerned about making my car safe for me and my family, as well as making sure I understood the entire service and transaction. I definitely will be taking my car here from now on!!
If you want an honest review please read this. If there were anything lower than a star I would give it to them. I was not actually their customer, my sister was. But I was with her the entire time (we are roommates). My sister went in there for an issue with her car. Not once did they ask her what happened before the car had this issue or what was the last thing the car did normally before the issue. They had the car for two days (the first day the told my sister that her car would be fixed in 30-45 minutes - an hour and a half max. We sat their for 6 and a half hours that day. Around 5 pm they came up to us and said that nothing had been fixed AFTER THEY PROMISED US THE CAR WAS ALREADY FIXED AND THAT THEY WERE JUST WORKING ON THE AIR BAGS. So they told her to let them keep it over night.) The next night my sister was tired of not having a vehicle so she called them and asked if there was anything she could do to help speed up the process to help them figure out the problem. Then she asked would it help at all if I told you what happened before the car started acting like this? The manager Nick said yes so she told him & he said wow. Wish we would have know that before. That is normally one of the first things that should have been asked is what we have been told since then. They ended up replacing the cars computer and charging us for it EVEN though that was not the problem. After they fixed the REAL problem they called and said it was going to be $250 MORE than the $630 she has already paid out for a part & labor that was not actually the problem. We went in to pick up the car and we were both asking questions because we feel like we were just screwed over and want to know why they didnt ask the qualifying questions in the first place and the owner (Ned) ended up yelling at me and saying that because it was my sisters car, he didnt have to answer me at all because I wasnt his customer. I have NEVER been treated so poorly in my life. After I post this I will be calling the BBB to report them. After reading some of the other comments it looks like we arent the only people who have had problems with them over charging and not fixing the right things. Their motto is done right or well fix it for free that is the biggest load I have ever heard. BE CAREFUL IF YOU DO BUSINESS HERE.
I had a clicking sound and I could not figure out what the problem was. I took my car to several places who tried to charge me for just looking at it but the manager Kevin and his crew at Tuffy drove my car only to discover the problem was something minor and they fixed it. Thank you guys I will always do business with Tuffy.

Treated well and pleased with the service. I went in to have my A/C repaired (it stopped working last week). An hour later, Tuffy found the compressor had a refrigerant leak and they showed me how they could tell with a black light (obviously it had been recharged in the past before I bought it). They gave me an estimate on the repair which was ~$300 dollars less than a previous quote I had on a different car with a bad compressor. I opted to hold off, paid $45 for the diagnosis, and was on my way. No pressure or arguments from them thus, no complaints on my side. Thanks Patrick.

I cannot speak highly enough of Tuffy. I came here to diagnose a leak from my car. Within 15 minutes of my arrival, Tuffy identified the issue as a motor oil leak and worked with me to resolve the issue. They took the time to explain everything regarding the leak to me and even showed me where the leak was coming from in the car. When they didnt have the part needed to make the repairs, they went above and beyond by checking around Des Moines until they could find a place that had the part and ordered it. They are hardworking, honest, and reliable. They are my new go-to mechanic and I highly recommend them to others.

GROSS NEGLIGENCE AND AUTOMOTIVE MALPRACTICE. I took my 2007 Prius into Kevin at this Tuffys location on Grand for the triangle of death light that was intermittently popping up on my dash. I told Kevin that I thought it was related to the brakes and that Id had the oil changed not all that long ago. I also mentioned that I wanted the fluids topped off. I dropped off the Prius early afternoon and Kevin called me three hours later and said theyd cleaned the brakes, cleared the codes and everything checked out fine. When I picked up the Prius, I asked Kevin if hed topped off the fluids, and he said no. I asked him if theyd performed a Multi Point Safety Inspection and he said, No, not unless you get an oil change. I asked him why and he said that he didnt like to upset customers by selling them a bunch of stuff they didnt come in for. I said, Isnt that your job? Finding things that the customer doesnt know about? We had a lively discussion. It was particularly lively because I own a company that trains service advisors to do the opposite of what he, and his team, did. We train auto repair pros to inspect EVERY car, EVERY time. Customer safety is an auto repair shops moral, ethical and legal obligation and should be their #1 priority. This was proven when I got home and decided to check the oil. THERE WAS NO OIL. The dipstick came up dry. I had to add 3 and a half quarts of oil just to get it to show up on the dipstick. The philosophy of not inspecting my car - and other cars that come to Tuffys - is automotive malpractice. There is an implied belief with car owners that the Tuffys mechanic HAS inspected their vehicle, and would tell them if there was an issue. Had I not checked my oil, my engine would have been destroyed and I could have been seriously hurt had the engine seized up in highway traffic. Kevin defended a policy - his or Tuffys - that is gross negligence, and puts peoples lives in danger, including mine. Ive posted a video about my experience with Tuffys and I hope someone at corporate watches it, and acts on it, for the greater good of all car owners.
George Garwood is one of the best managers I have dealt with at a service center, this would include the likes of Goodyear, midas or tiresplus. I will return to this store just due to the fact on how I was treated!! Great service as well. Wyatt, the mechanic was great!! He explained everything that was done in detail, neither one of them pushed anything on me. wonderful place to do service work!! Thanks!!
I took my Equinox to Tuffys for a non working air conditioner. Kevin Couch is the manager there and he and his crew got me fixed with prompt friendly service and fixed it right the first time. I hate spending for car repairs like everyone else, but next time something happens, and it will, Ill take it to Tuffys. Thanks for a job well done!
I highly recommend this location. I had been driving around to numerous locations looking for a working air machine but due to the frigid temperatures I kept hitting frozen dead ends! Someone recommended Tuffy’s and sure enough Patrick came to my rescue! They had even been closed for 45 minutes and he still agreed to help me out. He saved the day and I couldn’t have been more grateful!
It’s pretty obvious most of their “positive” reviews are paid for/bribed so they can bury the real negative ones. This chain clearly does not care about the customer, only profit. The man I spoke on the phone with was pretty unfriendly, didn’t even ask for my name to schedule the appointment. Also, he tried to tell me they charge atleast $50 to simply check my alignment. LOL, no thanks! Most places do that stuff for free. I’d rather not be taken advantage of.
The new management was excellent. He was patient, friendly, and explained all of the options clearly. The staff was also extremely good. I would highly recommend Tuffys in West Des Moines to everyone!
They were very helpful and informative of what they were fixing and why, asking what exactly I wanted done and to not do anymore than I needed just to overcharge. Quite a positive experience
Tried reporting them to the BBB. Went in for an oil change (by myself, 22 year old female) and they gave me a whopping $450 worth of repairs that were so necessary otherwise my car was going to break down. (my vehicle was 4 years old at the time). Me being trustful, I said to have the transmission flushed for an extra $200 and wait on the rest of the repairs. Then, I got a second opinion after because I assumed there was fishy stuff going on and sure enough I didnt need ANY of the repairs and the transmission flush HARMED my vehicle. And to make matters worse, they overfilled the transmission so my vehicle was smoking every time I drove it. AND when I looked at the bill, they incorrectly added everything up just to nickel and dime you. Cant stress enough to NOT go to this place. A bunch of creeps who take advantage of people. Oh, and 9 months later my car is still running perfectly, WADE! Looks like I didnt need all of those repairs.

An employee namerelations Patrick made this the best experience ever. I called right as they were closing to get an estimate on my ac compressor and he stayed after hours just to help me. He even helped with directions cause I got lost on the way. 5 star employee
Never take your car here. We found out that a couple things were installed wrong and they tried to charge us 80 dollars an hour for electrical testing, which most def would have ran the 6 hours had we not taken it to a different shop, for a light bulb and a battery terminal put on wrong. I will never recommend tuffy or ever take my car back even for a simple oil change. They also let go one of the guys that had talked about the light bulb and the owner said since he was gone he has no idea any of the work done by him. It was too much back and forth for a year to find out I wasted a bunch of money.
We drove to Des Moines to look at a vehicle we found off of Craigslist. Took it here to get it checked out. It was a short bus(not being used for school) and these guys did everything they could to accommodate a vehicle of that size. The guy at the front desk was friendly and knowledgeable. The mechanic who looked the bus over was honest and thorough. He explained everything to us and answered all questions and gave advice. He spent well over the allotted time for the basic inspection but didn’t charge us anymore. Genuinely nice and helpful people here. If we’re ever in Des Moines well go here to the people we can trust!

I have never been so utterly disappointed with a place before. I took my car in thinking I needed the rear defrost and breaks looked at and tires rotated. That was ALL I mentioned. I got a call back from the manager (Wade I believe his name was) saying he hates to be the bearer of bad news, and proceeded to name a laundry list of stuff wrong that would cost me $5000, anything from new tires, to head gasket, to an oil leak where my car could blow up.! I told him I needed to speak to my bank and not sure my car was even worth that much, I also requested a list be sent to me. He then proceeded to tell me all about the Tuffy card they offer. I clearly decided to get a 2nd and 3rd opinion. BOTH other places said NOTHING was wrong with my car (besides the obvious rear defrost that I already knew). Like the woman said, do NOT be fooled by their friendliness. SO AWFUL.

Please dont be fooled by the friendly service because I was. I trusted them to be honest people and not try to fool me out of my money. I even brought up the fact that other places try to up sell their services for unnecessary fixes and preventatives. Wade reassured me that they do honest business there. He lied! The first time I went there for an oil change, I ended up spending $800+ for the oil change, a fuel flush, new rotors, and an air filter replacement. The second time I went for an oil change, it was $600+ for the oil change, another fuel flush, new spark plugs, and some rewiring. It would have been more, but I declined some services. I dont know much about cars, but I have a pretty good car and know I should not be spending so much every time I go in for an oil change. I started doing my research and bringing my car to other places just to see if my car really needed those extra services. They didnt! The Los Angles Times did an article about fuel flushes....basically its not necessary. Wade told me that its an inexpensive way to keep your engine and overall car in good shape; however, cars are now made to withstand unnecessary services such as fuel flushes, so please dont let Wade sell you a fuel flush. Save yourself the $129, please. My advice would be to take your car to at least two different places to confirm you need a specific service. It will save you a lot of money. I learned my lesson $1400+ later. Lastly, at the end of my visit, Wade said he would throw in a free oil change if I left a 5 star review. I just couldnt do it, so heres the truth. I hope this helps.

Took my truck in for a break inspection and they called me back and gave me a list of fixes totalling $1800 which was beyond ridiculous for a truck worth $500.I declined the charges but when I tried to leave my truck would not start. Even though it was fine bringing it in.They then charged me $34 to start it for me. On the way back to my house none of my dials workes. Fuel, speedometer, the whole deal. Halfway home about 5 miles out my truck stalled and died on the side of the road.Weird how everything was fine before I brought it in. These guys are a sham.
Being a new transfer to Des Moines one really is at the mercy of reviews . I trusted Tuffy’s good name and was so happy with the service from this store. It was personal from giving my son a ride home to updating a concerned far away mom that the car was totally drivable abtet receiving new breaks. Customer service as well as repair are given 5 stars!!!
Tommy was great to work with, came in to get my suv alignment. Kevin was a great manager, and great to work with.
