Can you say shop! Out the the Closet is a thrift store serving the community in the Fort Lauderdale area. It provides gently used merchandise that is donated for those in need of economical options. You will find a mixture of clothes and furnishings to peruse. There can be some real finds like sequin outfits you may not be able to find elsewhere. Go gurls, you may just find the ruby red slipper.

I had an embarrassing and uncomfortable experience here when I went for an HIV test a few months ago. After decades of avoiding ever having taken an HIV test and being a bit anxious about the whole experience and getting the results, the reception I had here hit me fairly hard. There was a sign posted with info about testing and I went to read it. The man behind the register called out to me that there was no testing that day, then said, Well, which test are you here for? Several people who were lined up at the counter to purchase things turned their heads towards me to hear my answer. I shouldnt have answered this persons question with all of these people listening, but I was already nervous and taken off guard by this and I answered that it was an HIV test. The man said that HIV tests were being given. I then turned back towards the sign and another gentleman was now standing there and said, Can I help you? I said, Yes, I just wanted to know how long it takes to get results from an HIV test. This was part of why I was nervous, not wanting to wait for days for results. Instead of answering me right away, he stared at me for about 5 seconds (quite a long time when you are standing in front of several people who are listening to the conversation and you are already uncomfortable), then answered in what seemed to me to be an irritable voice, Its a quick result test. I said, Im sorry, Im not familiar with how these things work. How quick is that? Is it the same day or a few minutes? Again he did not answer me right away, but stared at me for a long period, then answered, Its a few minutes. I said thank you, maybe Ill come back another time and left. While the words of this gentleman may seem innocuous, his attitude seemed to me to be one of hostility and suspicion, as if he was dealing with an annoyance or someone who was making trouble. My privacy was not respected here and whatever reason this gentleman had for his hostility towards me, it was not warranted and was upsetting. With many kinds of people coming in for testing with many backgrounds and a lot of potential anxiety connected to hearing the results of these tests, personnel at this testing facility should be trained to be at least minimally sensitive to how people are treated when they come in here for help. Not only what you say, and in what circumstances, is important, but the attitude with which you deal with people matters. This is not just a thrift store, it is a place where people are being offered services that are private, anxiety-provoking, and require professionalism and sensitivity. Im an older, mature man and Ill find another place to get a test done when Im ready. I hope that Out of the Closet addresses these kind of issues, however, so if some other person comes in who may be in a worse emotional state than I was with my test-related anxiety, they receive a more supportive and respectful welcome.

Place is clean and well organized, lots of cloth, shirts, pants etc. Good brands and items are usually in good condition.Usually staff is nice and cool but there is one that has a bad attitude, I visit the store very often and not once he has smiled or been nice with me he always has a large face, like he hates his job.On the other hand items are expensive sometimes even more expensive than new items, for example a small dog bed for $30, a 40 LCD TV for $300, a small salt and pepper shaker for $10, sometimes there is a good find for a good price but usually going there is like going to store in Aventura Mall.

Interesting items! but when i tried to leave the door was locked so i unlocked it and an employee came up to me and said “if the door is locked it’s locked for a reason” ok is that reason to lock your customers in your store? that’s a fire hazard! it was so bizarre

This is a truly fantastic store! Im hesitant to call it a thrift store simply because it is staged beautifully, the items are extremely good quality, the staff (especially Evan) were knowledgeable and helpful. Wide variety of items in a clean, beautiful store. Highly recommend!!

We love this place. The workers are always nice and there are always unique clothing and furniture and kitchen supplies, etc. Everything is organized and I really missed coming here during the whole covid stay at home time. I do hope for more options of womens clothing though. Otherwise we love supporting the cause especially for awesome and affordable finds.

Great, kitschy second hand store. Since it generates revenue for a HIV charity, it is heavily supported by the area LGBT community, so the clothing selections are usually fabulous. Their stock does fluctuate, but they usually have a good selection of clothing, furniture and nick-knacks.

I really enjoy and appreciate this store. The items and facility are always clean and tidy and staff is awesome. Odds-n-ends place where I can always find stuff I need at very reasonable prices ($25 Keurig). Usually stop by a couple times a week because stuff comes and goes quickly. Thanks Out of the Closet for being so good. Your customers appreciate it!

Didnt find anything I couldnt live without and the Halloween stuff was a little pricey. Not much on sale either but helps the gay community. Offers HIV testing as well. Mostly a clean place and staff seamed friendly.

Out of the Closet is a great shop! The staff is so friendly. They have an excellent collection of clothes, furniture, home goods, and books. They have rotating sales too. You wont leave empty handed.

This is my 1st go-to place when looking for... literally anything. 1) Because the quality of the merchandise is pretty good and, 2) proceeds go to a good cause. i.e. HIV/AIDS/STD education & treatment.

Great thrift store! Very clean and pleasant staff. Plus they offer sexual health services in the back so that you can go in and shop and get tested without everyone knowing. The selection of clothing is every growing and could apply to everyones taste

Great shop and the volunteers working there are very upbeat. And, since I am a very hard to find size, it is always a joy to stumble upon a pair of pants in my inseam length- and esp at prices in the 4 and 5 buck range for Dockers!

This is another exceptional place to buy secondhand merchandise. One of my favorite things about out of the closet is that the monies that they used for the store go back into AHF.I like to think of it as going back into our community although AHF does not have all of their ducks in a row
