This place is an amazing place to shop! Not only are they knowledgeable, but they are very eager to help! They even provide a place for our daughter to play and stay engaged while her parents discuss MTG! Very family friendly and courteous! Highly recommend!!

World class service and a family friendly atmosphere, Hillside Games and Comics meets all your gaming related needs. I was passing through Asheville from out of town, and the guy behind the counter patiently worked with me to search out dozens of very specific cards from obscure Magic the Gathering sets and was friendly the whole way through. Their selection of boardgames is also top notch, and they have a roomy play area for tournaments and casual gaming. Highly recommended.

This is based on my fourth visit to the store. So I own a competing store, not that I look at it that way but whatever. So I have a vested interest in hiding that fact and leaving a bad review, as others have. I went in low key, not trying to draw attention, just wanted to see how their comic book section is shaping up. Ive read a couple less than great things about them, but this review is about my experience. If I didnt already own a store that sells the same stuff, this would be my store, or at least one of my frequent stops. I think its a great shop, especially for gamers with kids.

Super neat place- and a pretty lively scene. I went looking for D&D miniatures, and they had a large selection. Almost too large- I wasnt prepared for the decision making involved. Good on them though.

Hillside games always seems to have just what I need or can recommend me a game that is similar to what I want. The environment is really laid back if I just want to sit back and play a couple of games of Magic. The owners are super friendly and since theyve increased their space from moving to this location they have packed the store with so many more options!!

I really thought theyd have more comic books than what they did. But if your into card games like magic..then your in paradise. They also had a few board games like sorry, monopoly..etc..but they had a few good comics.

One of my favorite spots to hang out and find a new game to play. They have a fantastic selection and very friendly and knowledgeable staff. They also run a great selection of game nights throughout the week.

I was in the area and decided to check it out. The store seemed well organized for the mtg cards. I dont know if thats the case thats just how it was presented. The staff unfortunately seemed a bit more interested in other things. If you need cards on a quick notice. They are fine. If you want browse in person they are fine, but overall I got a really bad vibe coming from the shop. 3 out of 5 stars. I felt there was negative things going on with the place.

This is the only place Ive ever found that has taken the time to organize their Reaper minis for easy searching, that alone is worth 5stars

Great gaming store and extremely friendly and helpful staff/owners. They have a great selection of games for all ages, along with Magic the Gathering, Star Wars miniatures and others. I have not attended any of the gaming nights (like Friday Night Magic or release tournaments) but my husband regularly does and really enjoys them.Highly recommend them for your gaming needs!

Best customer service around! Folks really know what they are talking about and how to play the games they sell. Wonderful kids atmosphere and plenty of space to play and chat! Even after moving to college I still drive an hour just to get this amazing experience.

The store itself is pretty great. A lot of good product and even a place to play in the back.However. When I entered, I was not greeted. I attempted to smile at the cashier and did not feel any greeting was returned. While I looked around the store, both staff and customers were swearing a lot. I usually dont mind swearing, but I always envision these places being more kid friendly. Even though customers were dropping the GD bomb pretty heavily, nothing was ever said by staff. I was never asked if I had any questions or if I was looking for something in particular. The staff in the front mostly spoke with what I assume is a friend of his at the counter.I am sure this is not how it generallynis as this places does have a lot of positive reviews. My experience just wasnt like theirs. Grossly disappointed and will not be back.

The new store is definitely worth checking out. They have expanded and started offering comics in addition to board games and trading cards. They get new comics/games weekly. I stop in a couple times a month to see what they have in stock.

I come here every week to play Dungeons and Dragons with my friends. The staff is very nice and helpful. Lots of dice and minis in stock. They also sell Magic the Gathering and Pokémon cards, and there is often a group of people playing Magic. They also have a nice selection of board games and some in the back by the tables you can play for free. They have an event every day of the week so if you are into D&D or Magic I recommend you stop by!

Every time I go into Hillside Games I lament that I dont have enough friends, enough time, and enough money to buy out all their board games and play for years. Stores clean, nice, well stocked, and always fun. I just wish the iArcade machine worked!

Hillside Games and Comics is our favorite gaming store by far!! The owners and employees are all wonderful and always give outstanding customer service. Five stars hands down.

Our family comes here for the weekly Pokemon League. We are grateful to the owners for the great atmosphere and fun. Plus they have a good selection and prices.

Always great coming here for Pokemon events.Friendly staff, alot games and TCG related products. One of the few shops in NC that has a section for Pokemon singles. Though small is a plus in my book.Along with their growing and decently prices craft sodas. Snack options are a nice addition to the store when your there for long periods and dont feel like walking far.

Decent store, but will not go back here again until the owners learn to raise their hellion child. She repeatedly kicked my 3 yr old until I told her to stop. Sure they called her multiple times to come over to them but she completely ignored them. She harassed my child the whole time we were there and as much as they tried ignoring her it was impossible. She got mad at my kids for playing with the toys that appeared to be laid out for all kids. She kept blocking my 3 yr old everywhere he tried to walk. So I wont be taking my kids back to this place again, and is recommend anyone else with small children to stay away as well.

I would much rather spend my money elsewhere. I dont get a warming friendly feeling from the staff at all, and every time I bring my 2 year old in, theres a 4 year old girl that is the owners daughter that literally starts trouble with my kid.. and every time were leaving my daughter asks me why is that girl so mean? Completely unprofessional and ridiculous.

This place had everything that I was looking for. Ill definitely be coming back soon! 10/10 highly recommend.

Awesome nerd hub with kiddie area for peoples kids to play. Good variety with tables to sit and play at. Nice to be surrounded by my own kind. Hahaha. :) Will return.

Whether it be for board, card, or role playing games, Hillside has it all or can order it for you.Board game night is on Wednesday, Magic the Gathering is on Friday, Saturday is for Pokémon and Role Playing.If you want to, there is plenty of space, and you can start your own group/game night.

Best magic shop in Asheville. Nate and Amanda are the most wonderful people to interact with. They have not only magic but Pokemon and plenty of boardgames (including d&d) for those who enjoy them.

Great staff, fair collection, but overall a great atmosphere. There arent many gaming stores in the area, so our choices were limited, but the lovely staff over there outdid themselves. They even employed a halfling-dicerolling-she-elf! Talk about diversity :)

This place is fantastic for games for all ages. There is always something going on so be sure you check online for events. If your looking for a great place for gifts, this is great. You can even purchase a greeting card and gift bag. A one stop shop.

Friendly and knowledgeable staff always greet you when you enter. They have a wide variety of card and board games as well as an ample, ever-changing supply of tabletop rpg supplements and miniatures. Prices can be higher than online markets, but offers a place to meet and play with others that share your hobbies.

Hillside games has always been like a second home for me when I need to get away from the stress of real life and not only because of the amazing game selection, and of course card selection, but because of the owners who treat you like more than a customer. The store is hands down one of the best, if not the best LGS in town.

When I walked into Hillside games for the first time I felt as if though I was stepping through the gates into Celestia. A warm breeze floated past my billowing robe as I walked inside. The store owner appeared as if magically to say hello. At first my gaze was attracted towards not only the well-stocked wall behind the counter but the attractiveness of the store owner. But then another one of my senses was pleasured as classic rock permeated the warm and inviting atmosphere. However the music playing was not loud enough to disguise the joyous uproar coming from the play area in the back. I ventured into the back of the store to see for myself the revelry that was taking place, what could be so joyous as to cause an uproar of this magnitude? As luck would have it, it was Friday, and today was Friday Night Magic an epic event for the ages where nerds would gather to do battle on the Planeswalker tables of Hillside games. Once the group of cardboard Warriors saw my entrance I was greeted as a warrior returning from a valorous conquest. I swear by all that is Holy I will return to this place and I recommend you do as well.

Great place for board games and comics. But dont show up in your schoolgirl uniform and nipple clamps when someone asks you to roleplay. Apparently thats not how they do it there.

Really impressive shop. It had the Tardis effect of bigger on the inside than it looks, and was clean, organized and well-stocked. Store clerk was very friendly and receptive when I asked for a suggestion on which game would be most similar but less complex than the one I enjoy playing. His suggestion, Star Realms, quickly became a hit among my friends and I also got my family playing it. Seems like a great, community-oriented business with staff that know their stuff! Go check it oot!

I guess Im just not into the modern gaming fads, but they never have what Im looking for. One time I drove all the way out there to browse and they were closed when they were clearly supposed to be open. At this point, I just prefer to look elsewhere when shopping local before trying them.

First time in store - very friendly, has potential - bought a beautiful Joker metallic wall hanging.

It has a large collection of Comics and Figurines. It also has a bunch of Tabletop Games and a section in the back for campaigns and such.

Great selection of games and cards. It’s not a place you can make friends but it’s a place you can bring your own.

Friendly people and lots to see but the prices are sky high. When Barnes and Noble is half your price, you know youre overpriced.

Relatively small selection of tabletop games. Definitely slanted to hardcore Mtg or other ccg gamers. Posted restrictions on outside food. Also, restrictions on buying or selling cards from other players.

Hillside is a great store, but there are just too many turn offs that might thwart people off. Im only here to talk about the Magic: The Gathering. I love the selection and organization of all its Magic: The Gathering cards. No other store Ive been to so far has had a quite extensive collection. Now the bad part, the prices. I understand youre a big store, but wouldnt you think such a big store could cater to everyones need, mainly money wise? Sure there are some folks who are willing to spend $20.00 dollars on a single, but the vast majority of us wont. Starcitygames is a horrible website to go off pricing their cards because it uses the max value of what its worth, not the average. So people will pay a substantial amount more here than any other place. Also the service is a bit lacking. Having only one computer to check prices is a big drawback considering this store is suppose to be one of the best. Often times, with 2 or more people sifting through cards, youll take a good chunk away from youre time waiting to get a price on something. They need to label their inventory, even in a simple way. Also, the cashiers are quite rude. I go into other hobby/card stores and I get greeted with a smile, maybe even a witty conversation, but here, most of the people that work here are very blunt and short with you. Always talking with an angry voice, making you feel unwelcome in the store and making you assume their job is miserable.After all is said and done, Hillside is a decent store, definitely not the best by far, but the only thing going for it I would assume is its location of being in the big city and its selection of inventory.

Terrible. Walked in asked for certain yugioh cards to collect (like 4) for nostalgia reasons and was greeted with a condescending guy telling me it was a dying, crappy game and has no idea why we were looking for them. A kid chimed in and said something about building a custom deck? The dude replied immediately and said “HA hope you didn’t actually spend money on that” Pretty rude to my friend as well when asking a simple question. Great sales tactics...... F- in customer service. I hope your musty smelling shop gets closed down. Can’t be safe to breathe in there.Also, look people in the eye when you talk to them. Will go a long ways...

The problem with most hobby stores today is finding someone to play with. People stick with clicks that they show up with and sometimes (not always) shun other people coming in for a game. The best thing to do is to shoe up with a great inventory to peak interest in other players. even when they are reluctant to play with you they are hardly reluctant to trade. Trading is a great way to get the cards you want while joining a group of gamers. The store it self is great. Me and my wife have been to sops in charlotte, new york, new jersey etc and the prices on cards are the same. They are not that over priced at all. Unlike stacitygames that has a whole sale abundance of cards, small hobby shops not only have to sell at a higher rate because of limitations but also they have to pay for shop bills. The workers are well mannered and great to talk to. You can expect a person to want to be everyones best friend, and even people who like to play magic dont always want to talk about it. I for one play magic everyday, but you will not hear me talking about it out of text or at work. They are there to help you purchase items not help strategize a deck. I found this place to be helpful and to have some of the most classy people I have met.

Hillside Games is one of those game shops where everyone looks at you like you shouldnt be there -- you know the type. Everyones face seems to read, You cant really be into my card game? Other than that, the employee who worked the desk was completely uncaring and did not work to make the experience enjoyable for anyone. Slowly handed out cards and answered with pretentious replies to questions from beginners. Other employees seemed nice enough, but I dont know why they allow an atmosphere with such hostility? And thats not to mention the unethical business practices in relation to other game stores in the area. In sum, if you need MTG just buy them online and wait for a different card store to beat out Hillside. They wont reward your effort or your money.
