I am writing this review after visiting this location 4 times. Pre and Post pandemic. This location is a place to go if you have no other options for BBQ. Each time the food was served either lukewarm or cold. The portions are over priced for the amount you receive. They routinely do not have everything on the menu and you are forced to order something else. The staff do not know the difference between baby back and spare ribs and will serve the same ribs regardless of which you order. The taste of the food is also not good. Meat that should be tender is tough to chew. If you are near this location choose a different place to dine.
Excellent selection of meats. I always get a good cut here. The daily specials include some unique options as well. The building is large and spacious, with tables spaced far apart. If I had to improve something, the sides are just OK to me. None of them stand out as one I have to get each time. The meat is well worth the visit though.
Talk about a disappointment! We went around lunch and wondered why it seemed so empty. I now know. Rudys EASILY outdoes this place at a MUCH lower price. $15 for 1/2lb brisket!!!! And it wasnt even seasoned all that well. Im not saying Rudys is the best, but this place is definitely under it. The sides were $3.50 for a small piece of corn on the cob; like a quarter cut of corn! The drinks were $2.50 for fountain drinks too. All in all, it was overly expensive, dull BBQ. Do yourself a favor, go elsewhere.
Was short a few dollars and they actually took the meat out instead of just going ahead and giving it to my 3-year-old son who was obviously hungry. We would have been happy to pay it back next time we stop by as we come to this location all the time and the manager even came to the register and edited the price instead of just giving us the meat.the world is not the way it used to be and these people are not caring at all.completely oblivious to the fact that Im physically disabled hobbling into the restaurant and I have a 3-year-old son and hungry ...saying we dont have a card that will work it was declined and we have no cash on us other than what we had offered which was short slightly.Spend your money elsewhere
Visited Austin but we never go home without going here. Friendly courteous staff. Love the sausage. This place has been a staple in my family since I was little. Love to see they have expanded. Try the smoked lamb ribs, so good 😊
This place is just OK... we ordered brisket, turkey, stuffed sausage, and a brisket potato... we sat down to eat and everything was covered in grease... the paper boat that the baked potato is served in had a big pool of oil at the bottom. The brisket is made in some type of rub that makes it incredibly salty. I gave it 2 stars because the location was clean and the staff were friendly, but we wont be going back.
One of my favorite BBQ places in Austin. All their meats are consistently moist, tender, delicious and portions are generally larger than expected. The Southside Combo sandwich (brisket & sausage) is one of my go to meals. If you go near closing time you might get lucky and get even bigger portions so they dont have to discard it, or on the down side, it might be sold out. Try any of their oak smoked seasonings on your home cooked meats for a real nice flavor enhancement that will remind you of their pit smokers.
Called ahead to the restaurant to place an order to go. Called at 6:15pm, a nice lady took our order and our name and cell phone number, she said 20 mins. We arrived at 6:35 and went in to pickup the order and there was no record of our order! Others walked right in and placed a new order, and got their order and left before we did. They finally figured out we didnt have an order ready. Took another 10-15mins to get ours together.
Very delicious Food! The workers are also very nice to me every time I come in. Highly recommend 🤍
First and last time we will eat here. We ordered chopped brisket, cheddar and jalapeño stuffed sausage and baby back ribs. The chopped brisket was mushy and tasted old. The ribs were very tough and baby back ribs usually fall of the bone. The cheese in the sausage looked old.I saw the not so good reviews before we went but I saw some great reviews as well. So I thought it was worth a shot. I am a bit baffled that Texas BBQ could be this bad.On a good note, the staff was extremely kind and helpful.
I like to go on Fridays and get the pork belly special. Fatty, greasy, salty all the good stuff ! 🤣.Im biased of course since Ive been going to them since they were down by the railroad tracks.Really like the Arbou Walk location since I dont need to drive to Elgin to get the good stuff. Never had a bad meal at any location and over the years Ive tried everything.I will know the world is ending when I can no longer get my Southside fix !.
Definitely worth my trip....been dreaming about some moist juicy brisket! So delicious!❤❤❤💯 I have been back twice since then never disappointed!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Brisket was good, sausage was good, mac n cheese needed something but not sure what, pork ribs were sweeter than I like but still good, potato salad was very good, and the butter milk pie was a great ending.
The bbq was good but they kinda gave me a bit of attitude for asking for extra sauce with my meal. idk what that was about but regardless the food was excellent and sliced fresh in front of you..
This BBQ stop is amazing, the staff was friendly and even the fact that they were going to close in 10 minutes when I showed up Southside Market & BBQ still severed me with good recommendations. I wish we had this in the DFW area but Im definitely coming back again. I highly recommend this spot if you are in the Austin Texas area
Food is great but if they dont train the cashiers better then not even the food will keep me coming back. Our cashier was the rudest person I have ever dealt with. When I told her she could be a little more personable she became even more agitated. She needs to quit - she clearly hates her job.
1 star is too much. Im glad I ordered the baked potato, thanks to just the potato part. The meat was so disgusting. The mac n cheese, my 2 year old picked it up and smelled it and said nasty! It smelled burnt and tasted even worse! A waste of money!! Brisket was all fat and the meat portion tasted burnt. Im very disappointed and to top everything off the barbecue sauce tasted like water! Im glad they filled the cup half way up.
Fast service, everyone was very nice. The brisket was tender and had the right texture. I wish it wouldve had more of that smokey flavor in the bark other than that it was good. The turkey was juicy and tender as well 👌🏼👌🏼
First time for me here. Went with my sister. Ordered the large brisket sandwich with coleslaw and potatoes. She got the Mac n cheese and beans with a large brisket sandwhich. I liked that I could sit at a bar height table with a window view of the BBQ pit. Tea was good tastes just like my sister makes Texas tea as i call it, for some it may be on the slightly too sugary side, no problem just do half sweet and half unsweet. I didnt do the 5 star simply for cleanliness. Not sure how often the bar height table or any others get wiped down. The window unfortunately had a soar eye for what looked like someone sneezed on the glass and theft their BBQ sauce with their DNA behind, so yeah, that was gross (place was packed during a Friday lunch time). Other than the yucky window splat. The food itself was great. If you dont have a large appetite or you get full fast i would say the large sandwhich meal (comes with 2 sides, drink not included) would be good to split in half with a friend and each get one side.Another important down side for me, the ramp for a stroller or wheelchair is little further down, not bad on regular weather (a little bit a walk/push if using wheelchair or stroller to get to the door wont hurt), but cold wind, burrr.
July 3, 2021Called in my order and spoke with Stephanie. She assisted me in ordering the appropriate amount of meat for my family. Stephanie was friendly and displayed excellent customer service. When I arrived to the restaurant, I only waited 5 mins for my order. Stephanie explained in detail what was in every bag & container. Stephanie is definitely an asset to Southside Market & BBQ @ Arborwalk/Mopac.Sincerely,R. Chambers😎
This place is awesome!!! We were there July 3rd celebrating my mother in law birthday. They were able to accommodate 35 of us. Reserved several tables for us. THANK YOU SOUTHSIDE IN ARBORWALK!
Brisket had great Smoky flavor, moist, tender, and overall excellent. Sausage was ok, but nothing to rave over. Staff was friendly and attentive. Definitely recommend trying this place out if your in the area.
Celebrating my mothers 85th birthday my sister had made a reservation at another restaurant for a party of 28 to 37 people. We arrived and they were not setup, denied a reservation was even made, and they only had one cook. We will never visit that place again. Calling from the parking lot of that place we called Southside and asked could they accomodate our party? Come on. Upon arrival we found tables, chairs, all condiments setup and waiting for us. Southside(Austin) saved our occasion and I write this review thanking manager CJ Crawford and staff for a job well done. This was a six star event and saved the celebration.Yours Truly,Tommie
I give this place one star first time here & won’t be coming back the cashier lady with glasses was rude as can be had the worst attitude food was dry.
Yesterday I visit Southside BBQ And I got several pounds of sausages Several pounds rib and Brisket Southside serve half-done sausage, They need to do better Spend too much money in Southside.👎
We had plans to celebrate my husbands grandmothers 85th birthday at Brickhouse Tavern today, but after showing to our confirmed reservation having disappeared, straight disrespect and horrible customer service we opted to call Southside. We explained we had a party of 30 who planned to be there within 10 minutes. We were welcomed but also told seating is first come first serve. When we showed up, they had actually reserved seating for our party. They got us through the line quickly and even apologized for the horrible experience with Brickhouse that landed us there in the first place. The staff was amazing with 5 star customer service and all the food was delicious.Thank you Southside! You saved the day and our family had a wonderful experience.
The baby back ribs are my fave. I can eat them from here for BF, Lunch, Snack and Dinner. There just that good. Of course I cant forget about the sausage and brisket. I get so mad going to other BBQ places you can definitely tell a difference at least I do. When I think of BBQ I think of South Side. This location has improved their customer service I left for a year and drove to other locations as one young lady was so rude. But Im glad to be able to return and see so many new smiling faces. They definitely step their game up giving the same quality service as their other locations. Thanks Southside 😊.
Amazing barbecue! Friends have been telling me to go for the longest time, but Elgin has just been a bit too far out of my range. So when I heard this place was opening up, I couldnt wait. And MAN, it did NOT disappoint! Brisket was moist and had a great bark on it, turkey had a great flavor, but oh my that sausage! The sausage here is the best! Took home an extra pound to go. Long line because of the opening day, but more than worth any wait for this kinda food. Lot cheaper than most BBQ places around as well. Cant wait to come back.
Service was great!! Chicken a little dry and the pork ribs 😔😔 The brisket was Delicious!! Just how Iove it. The best thing for me, it was not too crowded.
Brisket dry ... bread almost stale and the beans on side order were under cooked and almost inedible ...
VERY RIGHTEOUS I ENJOYED THIS WAY MORE THAN SALT LICK
Food delicious as always. Some of the best barbecue Ive ever eaten. Definitely will go again.
What a great addition to the city of Austin. LOVED THIS BBQ SINCE A CHILD. My family and I ate there after a memorial service on Thursday (5/13/21). The staff and the Mgr. Mr. Crawford were EXCELLENT. They were very accommodating to us and we HIGHLY appreciate their hospitality. On behalf of my entire guests and myself we are truly grateful to the entire staff of SOUTHSIDE MARKET & BBQ! Whenever I am back in town I will get my bbq from them. FOOD, BEVERAGES, DESSERT WERE ALL PHENOMINAL!
Great food. Great atmosphere.
Why go to Elgin, Tx? This one is just as good, and closer to home, love the friendly staff, the food, and excellent service!😉
Brisket was fabulous! But the sweet tea was a bit bitter, not enough sugar.
This place is great save room for peach cobbler and vanilla bean ice cream
Most flavorless dry meats I have ever had. Sauce was gross. Honestly the only good thing out of our meal was the potato salad... we had brisket, sausage, turkey, sausage slammer, coleslaw and potato salad. Honestly even the pickles tasted bad.
The food is good, the staff was very helpful, and the restaurant was clean.
Maybe I was too early (11:20 am), but my food was cold...not even a hint of heat...I had the Southside Combo (sausage/brisket)...Is this how the food is served at this restaurant?...I have had hot brisket on sandwiches in the past...just wondering. If there is a better time to get HOT food, please let me know. I was on a time crunch and didnt want to make a scene so I ate it as is...the taste was fine...my.only issue was the meat was cold...Thank you for your time
It can’t be easy smoking the WORST BRISKET in all of Texas, but I promise you that the dry and untrimmed, 3/4 thick fat layer behind the bark sorry excuse for brisket I got by mail order this Christmas was as lousy as lousy can be! More upsetting, it came as a gift fromMy son who was led to believe this place was one of the best in Texas, and that I knew and loved good Austin barbecue and have been to all the best places around town. Fellas, it’s all about the bark, flavor, and moisture for me, and the lard slab that I was sent lacked all three. Worst part was, when I complained and asked them to send me a replacement or a refund, they did not even respond. Pass them on by.
I was expecting more from this place I’m 13 n I’ve been eating this type of food for my entire life I have so many complaints like for one the sausage were cold n a lil bit to oily y’all need to learn how to make food cs that was nasty n cold simple
I used have to go out to Bastrop but this location has made it so much easier and an equally amazing experience and expedience.
I was disappointed. I grew up on the sausage made at the original market. This did not seem the same.
Love this BBQ! sausage is great! My favorite location is Elgin but hey for a quick fix ill drive to Austin! The Pastrami Brisket (only Tuesdays) is AMAZING!!!!!!!! I enjoy everything i have had so far!
Excellent food. I always love the 2 meat special called southside combo with brisket and sausage. They did a Great job with sanitizing also. They are very thorough with wiping seats and tables along with leaving a sign that says for most part tables have been wiped.. You can eat outside if you want too. They have tables!!! I will be back
My favourite place for sausage. The pork ribs melt off the bone good. And I thought Lockhart was my fave
Ordered the southside plate with two meats & sides. Paid $20 and ended up getting bad food poisoning three hours after eating it. Be cautious when ordering their food at the end of the night.
Austin E and Jocelyn Q were absolute stars!! Also the entire staff was polite. My brisket was cut flawlessly. And the food is consistent with the original location. Nice job guys
First time customer of Southside. I ordered by phone for a curbside pickup. Food came out super fast and the waiter was very friendly. The sides mac&cheese, corn, beans, cole slaw were the best! For the bbq itself.. we had the brisket plate, sliced and chopped brisket sandwiches. General consensus from my group, everyone thought the bbq was super salty and the smoke flavor was overwhelming. The taste reminded my of liquid smoke from a bottle. Unfortunately, not for us.
Aracely the woman a register, was very rude to my grandmother when went in. Very, unfriendly and not helpful at all. Makes me not want comeback again.
Good bbq we had brisket, pork ribs, sausage. They have have four locations, Austin, Elgin, Bastrap, and HuttoWe went to the one in the Domain.
Great food and very sanitary service.
I love how they’ve handled this pandemic and are able to accommodate all the needed procedures. Now let’s get onto the food, it’s all delicious. Food is always fresh, ready to go. The brisket just melts in your mouth as well as the sausage just always being perfect. Pork steaks are delicious here as well!
Messed up my order badly, but I didn’t check so I didn’t notice til I got home. Don’t make the same mistake I did lol. I ate it anyway, “moist” brisket was incredibly dry with no flavor at all... it was hard to chew and I didn’t eat much of it. Sausage was school cafeteria sausage, didn’t finish that either. All around extremely dry food and lacking any flavor. I can get much better food at PokéJos for a fraction of the price.
Called in a curbside order, was hung up on. Called back waited forever to place order, to be picked up 30 minutes later. Went to curbside and called.... they said you have to come in and pay. I informed them that I couldn’t walk. Hung up on me again. I called back and they said we will bring it out as soon as it’s ready. Someone come to the car and stated again that I needed to come in to pay. I couldn’t walk and was never told I needed to place an online order if unable to come in and pay. No customer service at all. Never again!
Delicious BBQ, lots of options, daily specials. Convenient food to go. Clean dining room.
We live in La Grange, so we would eat at the Southside Market in Bastrop. Now we have 2 Southsides to eat.
Good ribs, pork and steak. The sides are good, too.
OUTSTANDING chopped beef sandwich, slaw & sausage wrap at Bastrop location - but no drive thru location here at Mopac & poor curbside service - who wants to go online to order a sandwich? 🤦🏻♂️ Off to Bill Miller BBQ I go then. Get it together.
Such a great meal for me and my troops. No one was disappointed!
First time in this fous market/restaurant. The food is amazing!
I had been craving bbq for weeks and only wanted it from Southside Market & BBQ. Yum, never disappoints!
So glad they came to Austin! Delish
I took my family here for lunch today. I had brisket and pork ribs with Mac and cheese and a salad for sides. My wife had the brisket sandwich. My youngest daughter had a sausage sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. My oldest daughter had a brisket sandwich. We had cobbler and banana pudding for dessert.I want to emphasize that the staff was absolutely amazing. I was very impressed at the mask discipline and how friendly and courteous everyone was. I really enjoyed my interaction while ordering, and then when the server brought the food to the table. The staff are wonderful. Big win there.Everything was solid, but nothing really jumped out as being absolutely amazing except for the banana pudding. The brisket was plenty moist, which is quite an accomplishment, but to me it tasted too smoky. The smoke flavor overwhelmed the flavor of the meat, so it tasted like I was eating a campfire. My pork ribs were good, solid, but, again, nothing that jumped out as absolutely fantastic. The mac and cheese was decent, but I probably wouldnt order it again. It was just sort of meh. Again, not bad at all, just not notable. All three of us who had it agreed that it needed something. Maybe smoked paprika and maybe some salt. Both of the folks who ordered the brisket sandwich agreed that the brisket was a little dry and a little bland. Ive always been of the opinion that if your brisket needs sauce, youre doing it wrong. Both sandwiches wound up with sauce on them. The sausage sandwich was good, but unremarkable. The sausage tastes fine, its not bad at all. Its just not terribly remarkable. My oldest daughter (17) ordered the banana pudding, and she said that it was one of the best banana puddings she has ever had. So, this place definitely has banana pudding in the win column.I would absolutely eat there again, but probably only if I were already close by. Other barbecue places like Rudys are closer to the house, and offer slightly better quality and taste.
My experience here has always been great, its fast, affordable, great barbecue, friendly staff. Granted it may not be the best barbecue youve ever had but this place is much better than its current rating here of 3.9. The jalapeno and cheddar sausage is real tasty, I love the smoked turkey sandwich myself. Briskets not bad either. I also had the berry cobbler and the banana pudding (on separate occasions, not at the same time, although I definitely would if my stomach capacity could allow for that) and they were both delicious.Definitely one of my favorite places to stop by and get some pretty good barbecue. Again I think some of these one star reviews arent fair--not enough vegetables? Hate to be toxic but its a BBQ joint, come on man. Like I dont judge MAD Greens based on their burger options. :P
My brother wanted to pick up some garlic sausage so we stayed for lunch. The barbeque was awesome😋.
The brisket, sausage and chopped beef were all delicious. Also tried their potato salad and mac n cheese. The place is nice and spacious inside.
REALLY GOOD BBQ! Not a bad price for the amount of food you get, the pork ribs are delicious though arent fall-off-the-bone. Brisket is GOOD. Definitely worth a repeat-visit.
Delicious BBQ and a great and Relaxing place for Supper with Friends.
Great food, friendly staff and the market side is great for take home DIY BBQ
The smell and appearance is enticing, however the food wasnt. Most of the meats we got were dry, brisket, baby back ribs, the turkey, and chicken - except the juicy chicken thigh - both leg and thigh had rubbery skin. Salad appeared to have been prepped carelessly as two of my three tomatoes had the stems and one a partial vine. Considering it was an extra charge, I was disappointed to see that and only three half-slices of cucumber. The sides lacked seasoning and the BBQ sauces were best when combined together. The bathrooms were clean, service was pleasant and prompt. I would give 2.5 stars, but thats not allowed. I rounded down because the food is the main component of a restaurant.
Excellent barbecue and service! A great change from Rudys if youre looking for barbecue.
I was pretty disappointed for my first visit at this location. The most important thing has to be the meat for Texas BBQ and brisket is what I consider the core. I had a half pound of brisket and it was served just barely warm and the fat wasnt fully rendered and definitely did not melt in your mouth. The flavor was unfortunately somewhat bland - not enough salt and pepper IMO. The potato salad was excellent with great mix of flavor and the mac n cheese was also good. The blackberry cobbler was not to my liking either but it may be a style others enjoy. Im used to cobbler having some crust that gets some crunch like a well done fruit pie crust with other parts that gets doughy and soaks in the sweet cobbler fruit filling but this was more like a dry cake for the bread base that had not soaked in the cobbler juices. The ambiance was beautiful and both cleanliness and service were very good but the lackluster meat and high prices gave this experience a low rating in my book. There are many excellent choices for BBQ in Austin and central Texas and this doesnt measure up for the price you pay.
Cole slaw was bitter. Food was room temperatureThe Elgin location is the only one I’ll go to from now on. See you next time I’m headed to Houston
Fabulous BBQ!!! Will keep coming back.
Ive been eating Elgins sausage since I was a child purchase $70 worth of brisket, sausage, pork steak (*I wasnt to fond of the pork steaks (little dry) BBQ sauce pickles bread crackers everything else was good
Food was good, service sucked! I waited for 5 min while the employees behind the counter had a conversation. I got halfway home before realizing I was missing half my order. They offered to give me a credit, but I dont live near. So I had to return to get the missing food. Im not sure if Ill visit on my next visit to TX.
Asked for brisket but got old dried out brisket. Also said I wnted bread after they asked and never got it!
Meat market is the best place to get amazing steaks for the grill. So many choices of meat at the counter! They also have BBQ meats that are vacuumed sealed and ready to heat or freeze! Or take out some great BBQ, they know how to smoke a brisket it is the oldest BBQ restaurant in Texas!
With all the hype, I came in end of the first week of 11/2020 & ordered to go for my family nearly $200usd. I am so sorry to say...so dried in ribs, brisket and the sausage. I never thought that I have bad grill meats (bbq) in austin. The gentleman recommended us on Mac & cheese so we got (2) large side for me 2 young kiddos, they too not eat after 3rd spoon of Mac & cheese. We are so regret and wasted our time and money. If you are reading my review here and you are new to austin and perhaps you should try the real grill meats (bbq) place called “salt-lick-bbq”.
Best bbq ever.. love the new jalapeno sausage and brisket along with that awesome potato salad with beans. I was very pleased with my dimmer.
The food is EXCELLENT, no question about that. flavors we love when eating at Southside Market & Barbeque, which is why we eat their food.the negative 2 stars comes from the lack of detail. the inability to read an online order and fulfill it in a accurate fashon.do yourself a favor and CHECK your order 100% before leaving!! items will be wrong and/or missing. no matter the detail given when ordering.we got a 3 meat plate, a ranch hand, a chopped baked potato, a sausage wrap plate, 3 sausage slammers and 3 desserts.1/3 was correct, 1/3 was inaccurate & 1/3 was missing. check, check & check again
