I arrived in time when the order said it was available for pick up. I was told it would be a minute and I waited for about 10 to 15minutes before asking again, he stated 5 more minutes. I continued waiting and other take out orders were fulfilled before I finally got my initial take out order 30minutes or more after arrival. Poor customer service, at least offer me a beer or something π€·ββοΈ.Chicken marsala over lamb curry all day.
2020 update: So much has changed and not in a bad way. Outside area is the same but the inside is completely redone. The actual bar is the same but everything else is different. Still a great spot to get a good drink. Kitchen still good as well.*Original post: The Whip In is original Austin, before it was cool. This bar/beer store/restaurant is always a good option. No matter what your taste in beer there is something for everyone. The inside seating usually has live music but theres plenty of room on the back porch as well
It was a bar they had beers. Thatβs all I can say. Went for a trivia night. The wait for food was over an hour and continuously grew throughout the night. The wait for a single beer was between 20-45 minutes. Staff was present and thatβs all I can say, not exactly friendly or warm.
Went to this place for the first time during Austin trip. Went with an impression of typical Indian dining place but was surprised with the ambience and atmosphere. Live band was performing when we went for dinner. It has nice mix of indowestern atmosphere. Food was tasty with decent number of options. Staff is friendly.
If this is the new Austin, then count me in! They really cleaned this place up. The bartenders were actually friendly and not complete snobs (like before the remodel)
This was some of the worst Indian food in the world. Plus it was in a dirty bar. Eeww.
Whip-in has never let me down. I love their vibe and their drink specials and their food! Never had bad customer service here and they have a variety of options when it comes to drinks and places to hang.
Amazing place near downtown Austin. They have a great ambience and awesome wine selection. We ordered the spicy fries and chicken 65, the fries were really delicious however the chicken 65 was average. If youre going there go for ambience, the nice atmosphere and fun music. A good weekend hangout place
First time visitor. Great crew, helpful staff and great beer selections.
Update: They seem to have a employee problem, staff only last a few months, then the next set of employees steps in and a few months later employees are replaced with new staff.I was Surprised, my first thoughts were, I was not sure if I should go inside. From the outside, it doesnt look like much and it may prevent anyone from going in. But trust me, it is a must! You need to stop by and check it out for yourself, it is a hidden treasure. On tap they offer many different types of beers including wines on tap. This place might be the best hole in the wall bar in Austin.FYI, dont come here if you are looking for a Budweiser or Miller, they only serve craft beer and wine.
Fantastic food! Wonderful people! Great patio with lots of shaded seating during these hot summer days. Great beer selection, really an overall kickass place!
We ate at this place on Memorial Day weekend. My friends and I really liked the food here. There was a good atmosphere inside and liked that it wasnβt so hard to get food like a ton of other places in Austin. Unfortunately we were seriously disappointed that the place had mice (rats.) They were seen climbing up the metal electrical conduit. Later they were seen in the areas between the false ceilings above the windows and the roof deck. They walked on top of the structural beams which are located directly above where people sit to eat. They were later also seen coming out of some holes in the metal roof deck. Needless to say it grossed us out but we had already eaten our food. Later on another person we had met at the table area inside had also mentioned to us about seeing rats as well. I donβt want to hate on this restaurant because the food was beyond awesome. This happened in the evening and the boldness of the rats to come out when people are present leads me to believe that Iβm not the only person who has noticed them. I hope that they can fix this ASAP because I want to recommend this place to other folks but thatβs hard to do after what I saw.
Amazing vibes and Indian dishes
I love eating here. The service was very friendly and kind. The bill was fair. Like a restaurant in Washington I liked.
This place is so weird and I love everything about it.
Cold food. Old stale naan with wilted lettuce. Not worth the money.
Took the drive out to see our favorite Austin band Como Las Movies! The venue was great and the only downside was the wait for a brew. The bar area was not that busy but a bit unorganized. Overall great experience.
I used to go here all the time when I lived on that end of town, it was a no frills place with good beer and good Indian food. They remodeled and most people would say the place looks great, definitely cleaner...but the food has taken a darastic hit. Got Chicken 65 and it tasted like extremely dry buffalo bites, extremely disappointing.
Surprisingly one of the most authentic Indian restaurants in Austin.
Canβt believe all the talk about the new rude staff ... Iβve been going to this place for 6 years the staff was always a bit grumpy! Lol most of the food is good though Iβm not an expert on Indian food. Love the beer selection.. kinda pricey but the happy hour is decent. Itβs one of my favorite places to bring someone when they say theyβve never been there before. Even after the changes itβs still a Gem
Great beer selection. Staff was very helpful. Shane helped me find the perfect beers to match the buffet. The buffet had a great, fresh selection and at a great price!
Really loved this place. The food was very good but maybe not the best Indian food Ive had in Austin (but close). Excellent selection of beer, wine and cider too. Very nice lunch buffet too for a good price. Ill be back for sure.
Amazing selection! Amazing service! They gave me free beer glasses! Ive been coming here for probably 20 years. Is it exactly the same as it always was? No. But still great selection and service what else could you want
On paper, this place should be another cool Austin gem. The staff was rude and didnβt seem to know their beer selectionβmultiple times we had to point to the beers on the menu to clarify our choice. Several of our groups beer requests were out. So yes, they have a lot of taps but most were out when I was there. The Indian food served its purpose, nothing to get excited about. A bit expensive for sitting in gas stationβs parking lot.
Unique and very Austin. Great food and beer selection.
Whip In is a wonderful place! Great food, wonderful variety of drinks, and fun relaxed atmosphere. I have tried quite a few things on the menu and have never been disappointed. My favorite has to be the South Asian Frito Pie. They have weekly chalkboard specials that are always fun and great to try. There is a great beer and wine selection as well, the bartenders are knowledgeable and very helpful. I always recommend this place to visitors and friends!
One of the best tap line ups Iβve ever seen. Some of the nicest bartenders Iβve ever met. Canβt replicate the atmosphere.
Good beer selection. Decent food. Just a heads up though, if anyone is playing live music they add a random live music charge to your tab. I have no problem paying for music, but I shouldnt find out about it after I get my check.
Seriously best selection of beer ever. Itβs a deadly combo when you have this and staff thats makes you feel right at home. Amy, Evelyn, Marshall βthey all know whatβs up!
I go to this place at least once every two weeks. This is one of our favorite go-to spots. They have around 70+ beers on taps and also some for you to take home. You can take a growler to go or also buy from their coolers. They also have a nice little wine area for you to order from. The food is amazing. I recommend the Whip Indian Nachos, The Woodland and their South Asian Frito Pie. This is probably the coolest place in all of Austin. I never get tired of this place. the staff are all friendly and they are very knowledgeable when it comes to the beers they serve. Kids are welcome and so are the furry family members. We love this place!
Very original Austin. Ive been coming here for nearly 2 decades. Great beer selection. Not a huge selection, but very unique.Great place to chill with friends and to try new local beers many other places dont carry.
This place is amazing. Indian food with Austin flavor! On and off sale beer and wine. Great selection of both. Lots of beers on tap!Ive had several different dishes. From burritos to curries to sandwiches. Everything is great! Good amount of spice too! Naan bread is so good. They only have a small kitchen, so dont expect quick turnaround. Definitely worth the wait tho! They host a lot of events and live music as well.Just a real fun atmosphere and delicious tastes place to frequent. You cant go wrong...
Had Monday buffet for lunch and it was absolutely delicious. Victor and Shane helped me find a great beer to match. Will definitely come back.
This place is awesome! The food kind of seems to be Indian-Texan fusion. Had the curry chicken wrap with fries and an Austin East cider, and everything was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is completely charming and so were the staff. I will definitely be coming here every time I visit Austin!
A friend took me here while ii was staying in downtown. The beer selection was pretty massive, and I got the daily dal as well. It was a pleasant experience and we hung out in the outdoor seating area. I tried several local brews, and they brought me several samples to try before selecting a pint. The food was excellent.
First time having Indian food and wow just wow!! It was incredible! Nice large servings, great atmosphere amazing staff and awesome live music!
First, I was surprised the overall review rating was only 4.3. If you want great Indian food you should go to an Indian restaurant, especially one that you know is highly rated. Or maybe those who rated 1 or 2 stars are new to Austin? I lived in Austin around 25 years and Whip-in is a great place. Its very hard to find a place that serves fresh draft beer brewed maybe 20 or 30 yards away. Yes, Im not an Indian food connoisseur so I ate dishes Id never even heard of before and enjoyed. And the choice of beer to buy in bottles is great. You can also get live music indoors or out. Id love to know of any place that has so many good qualities.
This is a cool hangout the patron are awesome. And a decent beer selection in a great location. I had to take two stars because the beer is always warm, I would be embarrassed to serve anyone at my place a beer this warm. Its been the same far a long time, if they ever catch on to not having cold beer then I certainly will up the ranking.
Ive been going to this place on and off for about 6 months. Brought a friend in to hang out. The place was a little quiet since happy hour had just ended not to long before. Bartender who approached us was not friendly at all. She had some kind of disposition going on. Im in the service industry myself & I know it goes but you cant greet people when youre in a super bad mood. Anyway another bartender checked on us by the name of Tiffany. She was courteous, accomadating and most of all smiling. Thank you Tiffany for saving the night for us. Next time I go back in Ill ask for her. Other than that you guys still rock with great beer, wine and food!
I consider myself a decent cook, so my expectations, especially when it comes to Indian food are somewhat high, therefore I look for a few good things that are virtually impossible to mess up. For example, samosas, rice, etc. But this place actually infuriated me. I talked to someone there and they mentioned the food had a french twist. While Im open to fusion-cuisine, the food at Whip-In was plain bad, I mean really bad. I remember in the end attempting to subsist on some dip, which it turns out had bacon in it, which I love, but I wanted Indian, good Indian, or passable Indian at least. However, the place is teeming with cool and friendly people so if you are looking for decent beer and conversation, and are under 30, go there [I was coerced into going there by my younger brethren, so please dont judge me]. But I have to insist, dont go for the food [insert Johnny Cashs I hurt myself today...] I wish I could have had the opportunity to self flagellate while I was there. As I write this, I understand now, why they call it whip in.
Good bottle shop, quality beer & wine selection. Offers live music & good kitchen. The curries pack some heat & sandwiches are good. Patio is good, dog friendly policy. Parking can be challenging on weekends. Been going here 10 years watching it evolve. Maybe nostalgic but I thought draught selection was better years past
The staff was very friendly. Clean and quiet atmosphere. Great little stop for a glass of one of the huge selection of beers. The mixture of indian with a Texas twist on it was perfect. They have vegetarian options as well. Staff is quick to see if everything is up to your standards. Highly recommend to any locals or tourists.
My second favorite place in Austin (Handlebar). Great beer list, fantastic food and like...its an Indian fusion restaurant with a beer garden and beer selection a Munich pub would be proud of thats also a convenience store with a wine selection to die for and this place looks like a gas station convenience store from the outside. Its so Austin and its so wonderful. Also Ben Balmer on Monday nights is everything youd want...so yea come here.
This place is surprisingly good. They serve excellent Indian(?) inspired food, and have anything from samosas to French toast. If you are vegan/vegetarian, youd probably love it here. The beer selection is also impressive. They have a small wine booth as well, although I havent tried it.
Whip In is a great Austin spot! They have a terrific beer selection and the staff is incredibly helpful in choosing the right beer for you. Indian food menu but with several options for the less adventurous (goat burger is amazing!). They have an awesome beer garden and at night they have live bands making it a great place to spend an evening.
If you are a hipster, love unique beers, or love a good scene this place is for you. It embodies South Austin and depicts the people well. You can find anyone here from the random homeless to an upscale CEO of a tech company. They had Labatt here which I loved! It is a beer I have only seen in the northeast US and Canada and when it caught my eye I fell in love!
I mustve gone here on a bad night, because although they have a great food and beer/wine selection, the service was so bad that Im hesitant to go back. My friends and I waited a long time at the bar with no luck, so followed a man who ordered a beer (successfully) at the register. I asked about the beer on special and was told by the server Im really only supposed to be taking food orders, I responded Oh, Im sorry, can I still order this beer here or do I need to move to the bar to which she responded well, do you want to order a beer or do you want to talk about beer?! Wow!! Later around 10pm my friend tried to order food from the same woman who responded the kitchens closed in a very curt tone. One of my friends asked a male server, whats this wine? when ordering and was told brusquely I dont know, never tried it. The whole time I felt like I was offending someone, and the staff clearly were overwhelmed (which is funny because it was not particularly busy). They also were very quick to start stacking chairs with people still standing around them starting at 11:30. Overall it made you feel like the staff really wished you werent there at all- which I understand from working service jobs- but maybe try not to make it so obvious! Again, first time here, might be willing to go back and give it another try, but it really left me wondering who is managing this place.
The food is stellar, the taplist more so. Comfortable and eclectic with a crowd that spans generations. Wine list is excellent and its a package store too so take a bottle home. In 98, a friend said they had the best beer selection in Austin. Then it was a hole, but it was true. Now, less of a hole and still has an awesome selection.
Great beers on tap. Cool eccentric place. They close kinda early and dont serve liquor however theres a wine bar and they have a plethora of takeout items. Pretty good food too.
Delicious food! Everything is tasty! Ridiculous beer selection! I mean, like 100 beers. Great service! Good music!
This might be one of my new favorite spots in Austin! They seem to have it all: great wine, craft beer, amazing Indian inspired food, and even tasty lattes! You can come here for any occasion! Highly recommend the Bakra Burger!
3 three things I look for in a great restaurant are pretty basic. Great food, great cocktails and/or beer, and great customer service.Whip in has all of the above with an added cozy/ warm dimly lit inside and great live music outside. Its a gem you wouldnt think would be directly on the side of a major freeway.
Awesome beer and wine store turned bar/restaurant. Could do with out the awful folk music live shows tho. You have to go when they have some of the more eclectic bands. Beer list is tremendous and always changing. Food is a great fusion of Tex-Mex-Indian-Etc. A truly Austin authentic spot.
Whip-In rocks! I am fairly new to Austin and a friend brought me here. I have ordered a different menu item every time I have had lunch here and every single dish was great. Awesome beer selection. Super friendly staff. Hats off to Depak and crew.
Love this place! Im sad we dont live South anymore simply because it was so easy to go here. They have an outstanding tap selection and great specials. They have a good bottled selection to go as well. Try the sandwiches! I havent been disappointed yet. I always look forward to meeting the guys here for beers and good company in a laid-back atmosphere.
Theres probably nothing I can say that hasnt already been said, but I absolutely love this place. The beer selection on tap is always legit, the bartenders know their stuff and can always offer fantastic recommendations, and the food is amazing. Its small, so sometimes indoor seating can be tough to find, but the outdoor area is just as great (covered almost completely, so youre out of the sun). If they have the Earl Grey Bitter beer (cant remember the actual name) on tap, GET IT. Smooth, delicious, and refreshing.
I am only disappointed that I lived in Austin a year before trying this place! Great atmosphere - inside and out. Live music often inside. They have a stellar brunch with drink specials. Their food is ridiculously good and the beer menu is hard to beat. They also have a grocery section with beers and wine to go. I wish I lived closer - no negative things to say.
Nice aura of the place, good beer selection, food was ok. Nothing overly fancy or amazing. Decor was so-so. I wouldnt find myself rushing back.
2 years ago... this place was the shiz. Whalez for beers on tap, rotating taps (key word βrotatingβ, etc. Rotating meant an almost completely different menu on a weekly basis.Fast forward to today... they pretty much had the same tap menu for about 6 months. BOO! If youβre looking for a quality beer bar, unfortunately, this is not the spot anymore.
The place serves big dishes and for fair rates. very kind owner. Will visit again.
Its a convenience store/cafe and neighborhood hangout all wrapped in one. The food is Indian inspired. Their beer and wine selection is pretty versatile for a convenience store. If their live music, it gets very loud.
This place has a great ambiance and huge selection of beer and wines. They have a nice Indian fusion menu as well. We got their hummus, elegant stoner snack and nachos. All delicious! They have a swanky interior that is very comfortable and good for groups. Wish I still worked near it like I used to. They often have shows at night too and have a small stage in one corner of their interior.
I had an absolutely horrible experience. I came in with my girlfriend. I ordered a burger and she ordered a chicken fried rice. There were maybe 3 or 4 other couples there at the time.. Not busy AT ALL. I placed my order and went to pick out some juice since I wasnt really in the mood for alcohol. Look around for about 5 minutes then approach the counter with an orange juice.. The waitress asked me what did you want to eat again? Then finally puts in my order. WE WAITED 45+ minutes for a burger and chicken fried rice. When they came out they were luke-warm. I wanted to request a refund when we approached the 40min mark but our waitress was nowhere to be found.. Turns out her shift was over and she left. Everyone that worked there had an expression on their face like they hate their job. Worst dining experience I have ever had in Austin. I would not recommend this place to ANYONE. I wouldnt go back if you paid me.
Indian buffet us fantastic for Sunday brunch. Great bottle selection as well.
I havent tried their food but they have some great beer on tap! They have table and bar seating. We enjoyed the live music. The staff was very warm and knowledgeable about the beers they served.
This place is pure old school Austin. The Indian lunch buffet offers some of the most delicious Indian food in town. They cook it there themselves.
Paid my last visit to the Whip In today. Iβve been going for 15 years but have outgrown the stench and service. After the bartenders could not conceal their disdain for me for thinking a $6 glass of wine was discounted for happy hour (βItβs cheap enough alreadyβ), I decided to leave this old Austin dump forever. If there werenβt so many other factors working against it, the bad service at the Whip In wouldnβt necessarily be a nail in the coffin, but with the decaying interior, construction, and endless sources of competition who provide the same service far better (and more hospitably), itβs safe to say this place is doomed.
Not sure when it became acceptable to not price items for sale....please be aware that most of their bottled wine and beers are not priced. If you enjoy guess my price, this is the place for you. I find this very unprofessional and unscrupulous... City of Austin should look into this practice as it violates many consumer laws.
Love this place. The food is super tasty. Very βAustinβ atmosphere. Always bring people visiting from out of town.
This place is everything you need. The food is Indian American fusion and I live it. The samosas taste great. I love their beer collection. They have a bigggg collection of wine and beer as well in a small grocery store in this restaurant as well. And there is live music every weekend. Its an amazing place and worth a shot.
My husband and I hit up Whip In weekly. The staff is like family and the food is outstanding! Please bring back the goat burger. We miss it!
[ETA] I wont be back here since that big news article about management. I believe in worker solidarity, and I would not buy anything from a business that abuses their workers. Customer service is hard enough without bad management.
Cigarette smoke city. Avoid this place if you dont smoke, or get your order to go. We were forced to pay $3 on top of the $14 bowl of rice topped with chilli so we could pay the band even though we came for the food only and didnt want to watch the employees play in their band . We didnt have any option to not be subjected to cigarette smoke for the whole 15 minutes that we waited for our food, then the whole time we ate our food. This is not the smell of fine cigars, but cheap cigarettes and profiteering.
New remodel is nice, the inside feels much larger and the tap list is impressive
Bring your appetite and your growler. Food is fantastic, though dont get there too early in the evening. Great selection of beers and they will even refill growlers! Cool and helpful staff, always a stop when im through Austin.
Met a friend here for a drink a couple of weeks ago. Nice Bar with a large selection of draft beers. The have indoor seating with indian cuisine which I have not tried yet. An outdoor beer garden and an off license. They have little stages inside and outside with live music. I enjoyed it and would definitely go back.
Even among hole in the wall locations this place is a gem. Both the peshwari and vindaloo were incredible. Large selection of wine in the attached store to choose from.
New management is totally inept. This place used to be great. Sinking ship.
One of the best places in Austin to buy/drink beer at. They have a nice little parking lot and a nice patio. I like how they have bands playing, but its all about the beer selection. If you like craft beers its a must you try whip in.
Great beer selection but stay away from this place on Tuesday nights. Their trivia pursuit so loud that its impossible to have a conversation.
This place is so amazing. Great beer selection and great Indian food at a reasonable price. The live music is very diverse also.
They have a great selection. Ive never stopped to eat yet, but Ive only heard good things... and it smells delicious.Ive bought some of the Mary Louise brownies here (delicious), wine (nice selection), beer (good selection), cheese and crackers. I once bought some somosas to go, but dont feel like having them to go was the full experience. I plan on having some food here pretty soon.
While I only did stop by here for the food, I did notice they have a good beer and wine variety. Unfortunately I wasnt too impressed with the food. I guess I was expecting more authentic Indian food but I have some friends that love it. So give it a try and see if its for you.
Such a neat place! It is very unassuming from the outside, but may be one of my favorite little gems in Austin. Food is delish, atmosphere is fun.
Every three months this place seems to change its format, but thats just part of the charm. Mutable convenience store turned micro-brew Indian restaurant. Definitely the coolest place along south I-35 frontage.
Oh man. What a great little Austin gem for beers. Their selection is incredible. I follow them on Facebook and whenever I see new beer updates, my mouth waters. The buyer truly has a gift. They know their beers and there is something available for everyone. If you come here looking for Miller, Coors, or Bud Light, you should be slapped. Oh, and their food is pretty great too. Ill keep coming back to this Austin staple.
Whip In has a fun, random vibe. Indian restaurant meets liquor store meets dive bar hangout is pretty much how I would describe it. Good food, good atmosphere and nothing to dislike.
I LOVE the Whip-In. The food is so delicious and the beer selection is great. The bartenders are always very nice. Really comfortable spot inside or outside. Good live music too.
I love this place, one of my favorite things in this entire city. Great beer selection, great food, great atmosphere. Only downside is finding parking and the fact that everyone else loves it so it can get crowded.
Used to be a great place until the hours and menu have changed. The food is still very quality but how can you be an Indian food place that doesnt have naan!? This new management reminds me of trump taking office, theres nothing we can do but hope for impeachment.
The Whip In is an awesome experience. They have a huge selection of beer, stage for musical entertainment and amazing Indian Food. It is a great place to just stop in to pick something up or to stay away. The Whip In has the Austin vibe going on.
I love going here for drinks! They have a huge draught selection and a fair amount of wine behind the bar, as well as on the shelf to take home. The staff is generally cool and friendly. I go back periodically to see the people again that continue to take care of me. Thank you!!
