Love this place! Nice hole in the wall atmosphere, with a good selection of merchandise. Highly recommend.
I actually visited the Uwajimaya store abs that is one of my favorite places to shop.
Ive been coming to Kinokuniya for...wow, probably more than 15 years, and I have seen it evolve (or devolve, depending on how you look at it) into what it is today. Up front, many of the items for sale here are more expensive than youd think, due to the cost of importing premium items from Japan.Ive watched as their ongaku (music) section shrank from two walls in the corner, bursting with CDs containing J-Pop and J-Rock, anime soundtracks, hogaku, music video DVDs and more, slowly evaporating down to nothing. Their anime DVD and Japanese cinema sections fell to a similar fate, becoming a pale shadow of their former glory. Compared to the Kinokuniya at the recently renovated Seattle megastore, well...there is no comparison.I get it. The demand just isnt here to support some of these products, and the rise of Amazon and online shopping undercut the import market and stifled competition. And despite all of these factors, I cannot fault them for it. The products Kinokuniya offers are niche here is the US, for a reason that is as cultural as it is economic: Americans will not pay extra for quality.Dont get me wrong, a lot of things Kinokuniya sells is kitsch. Nobody *needs* a bunch of pencil erasers that look like sushi (with compelling accuracy). Nobody *needs* an oversized fashion magazine with a purse folded up inside. Nobody *needs* a series of randomized, blind-box, collectable 2 cat figurines or Kewpie dolls (except my wife, apparently)...but there they are. Theyre part of the cultural fabric of Japan, and thus they only appeal to a specific market: the Japanese expat, immigrant, or the American Japanophile - basically, the only people you will encounter making a purchase in this store. There is still a fabulous selection of Japanese manga, literature, childrens books, cookbooks, magazines and more, and many of these items are written in Japanese, so their usefulness to us gaijin is limited. The stationery for sale here is among the best in the world, though, and perfect for aspiring artists, authors or bibliophiles. Like the music and movie sections, the quantity of artbooks and figurines for sale has similarly atrophied, but you can still find high-quality memorabilia from the most-popular flavor of the month anime series or movie, plus a healthy selection of Studio Ghibli products. It may not be what it used to be, but Kinokuniya is still true to itself, to what is always has been: a small window into the madness that is the everyday reality of that legendary island on the other side of the ocean, Japan, and thats exactly why I love it here.
Its nice but water too expensive.
So much cool stuff! The kids and I love it. The staff is very friendly.
Took my wife to see what they had and she ended up falling in love they have some great classic and new anime and manga items from buttons to books and even a great area for art related items and pens of every kind of style...
Lovely veggies and fish. Great selection of hard to find Imported products. Friendly, helpful staff. Whats not to love.
Very cool little gift shop / bookstore inside of a giant Asian grocery store :-)
All things Manga. Books, gifts, pins, toys. They have an extensive selection. Located inside Uwajimaya.
Big, good selection, and I love the little book/stationary shop in the back
Excellent choice for authentic Asian foods.
This store is located inside the Iwajimya and is AMAZING! They have great cookbooks as well as lots of popular manga and tons of drawing and journaling supplies.
Ive never purchased anything here but I appreciate the fact that Kinokuniya is still around in an age when book stores are having a difficult time staying in business. Ive never bought anything but my wife buys books and magazines, my daughter buys their pens and stationary, and my parents are big book buyers.I cant really say what they have on hand here because I cant read Japanese but there is a large area for books, a smaller area for magazines, another area for pens, stationary, odds/ends, and another section dedicated to anime and anime-related products. The staff is always friendly and helpful, the store is always clean and well organized, and theyre always seems to be something for everybody. Please dont go anywhere - we always stop by this location when were in Oregon and same for the one in Downtown L.A. when were in California!
Oh this place is great! Get you anime and Totoro goods here!
Great selection of specialty paper, journals, pens and pencils.
My daughter so happy find the manga collection and she said the small stuff are difrent than other even thou little expensive.. lol..
Neat little bookstore tucked in the back of the Uwajimaya Grocery Store. I love all the neat little gifts and trinkets they sell and is perfect for finding a little something for yourself or someone else.
Lovely little Japanese bookshop. Not a huge selection but still plenty to find.
Best store I ever been in👍👍
Love this shop. Tons of manga and Japanese merch.
Super cute Asian shop with lots of writing tools, paper, art books, and souvenirs.
Small and not much selection. But, still fun to go and look around.
A good bookstore.
They have a great selection of stationary supplies!
Best place to get your Weeb on.
Love it but everything is so expensive lol
Super nice staff, huge selection of stationary and both english and japanese language books!
This is prefect for going to get manga
A great Japanese bookstore and supermarket.
Amazing store
I like to go when they have 20% off for members, which I believe stacks on top off the 10% for members. Some things are overpriced, so if youre planning to make a bigger purchase, I suggest you look online first (from a safe website of course!) Crunchyroll was selling a figure for $130, while Kinokuniya was selling it for $195! So make sure to do your research. The service has always been good too, employees are always nice. I highly recommend visiting.
I drove 40 minutes to get there and they didnt take cash I was really upset because they could have posted something on the front doors
Lovely people
Beautiful store with a large variety of Asian products. They have a nice wine section with cheap yet delicious choices. Theres even a manga shop and Anime related items for purchase.
The coolest Japanese bookstore Ive ever seen. Makes me wish I lived in Portland.
I love this grocery store and the deli they have available. the poke bowls are the best!!!
Wouldnt go for the book side your better off at a Barnes and Nobel they have a very limited selection and almost all of their manga is wrapped so you cant read a bit before you buy. The food side is very intreatsing.
A good place for pens and some stationary, knickknacks, and of course books (mostly Japanese). It may not be as big as the one in San Francisco, but SF is much further from Portland, and they still have a nice pen selection that includes brands not sold by other Portland-area stores.
A wonderful bookstore with a delightful atmosphere. Between the new manga fads and the timeless gems, this place had yet to disappoint me. Also, their writing supplies and little figurines are adorable!
Great customer service, excellent selection of both Japanese and English books. I cant recommend it enough!
My wife, who is into Japanese dress pattern books, LOVED the bookstore. Otherwise a nice, large, well lit, not too fishy, Asian grocery: sashimi, lots of tea/coffee drinks in cans, rice chips, premade sushi, fresh shellfish (I think, we did not try).
Fantastic selection of Japanese media. Very fun to look through!
Super great for people learning Japanese who want some good Japanese literature locally, and also great for manga enthusiasts both Japanese speaking and non speaking, also added benefit of being in a great grocery store
I cant believe that this is another place I have neglected to post a review about. I loved this quaint bookstore, since they sell merchandise that is unique in comparison to other bookstores. They carry books in Japanese & English. If they do not carry a specific book you could always ask one of the helpful & friendly cashiers if their warehouse have the item in-stock which they can either order or pre-order the item for you and have it delivered at the store if you like free of charge. This store did moved their items around and added merchandise & removed selling some merchandise which is not uncommon thing that stores do. My favorite is the membership card you pay $25.00 which if memory serves is good for a year which you get a 10% off on items & occasionally get 20% off on membership appreciation day. I forgot to mention they have manga, magazines, fiction, non-fiction books, stationary, pens, pencils, gift items, figurines, other school supplies, stickers, fan art books.
Cool little bookstore especially if youre in the manga or anime
Great selection of manga, collectibles and other cool stuff.
Great selection of collectible anime items. The team of employees are knowledgeable, friendly, and always provide great customer service.
Intro -Its pretty hard to find bookstores like these, but this does it good.Merchandise -Im not really a book or magazine person, but theyve got tons of those, plus some neat little knickknacks and things of that nature. Plastic figurines, school supplies, posters, even Ghibli movies. Its all pretty nice.Service -Ill try to avoid letting bias creep in here, as I have gotten to know one of the employees here a little bit. But the service is great. Not top-notch or anything, but definitely good. The employees are very kind people.Atmosphere -What can I say? Its like that of a bookstore. Its pretty small, but I cant take issue with that. The one in downtown Seattle is colossal compared to this one.Cost -Expensive. Youll definitely notice the prices are high. Are the things not worth their price there, though? No, I dont think so. Just be careful with how much you spend, it can get high pretty quick. However, they do offer membership for $25 a year, earning you a 10% discount and a free $10 gift card for every $300 spent.Summary -A nice little store to visit every so often. Go check it out, youll like it if youre into the kind of stuff they sell, which is like I said, books, magazines, school/art supplies, and knickknacks.
Great food store with a varied selection of food and gifts. Attached bookstore with large selection of books.
They ordered things that were out of stock and they are delivering it to Wisconsin for our convenience.
The store had reasonable prices on most things, there is more manga than figures
Nice
This miniature version of the large store in San Francisco has great gift items, as well as stationery and books. Check it out the next time you visit Uwagimaya.

I love coming here to find new Japanese CDs or books. They have a pretty good selection for such a small store.
Anime Lovers, Manga Lovers, Stationary and Pen Lovers, this is your place!
Perfect, has everything Ive been looking for!
Seriously overpriced, nice merchandise but honestly for 165 bucks and some pens, supplies and books...ouch!
A really wonderful Asian import bookstore which also stocks English books. They have manga, magazines, kids books, art books, cookbooks, collectibles, etc. My favorite items are the anime plushes and wall scrolls and the section of art pens.
Fun little book store.
Perhaps this store is located in the corner inside the grocery store. Small bookstore with few stuff compared to the other kinokuniya stores I been to
Its amazing and amazing services
Always find new things to try.
They had everything I was looking for.
They no longer have adult photo books
Like stepping out of the US
