Friendly and helpful staff and salespeople, lovely new location in Brookline Village with spacious and inviting rooms to try out instruments, and a parking lot too for guests. Wonderful place to meet the needs of violinists, violists, and cellists in the Boston area!

Great experience! We consulted on my grandfather’s violins and Mr. Reining was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Interesting to experience a space so devoted to violins.

I see most of the comments are positive with some extremes of negative about Chris and his staff. I personally did a small renovation and expansion for the violin shop about 10 years ago. I am not a musical instrument player and I wouldn’t be able to tell you what is good or bad. But when I did that renovation for Chris and his employees years ago, they are in my top five of clients I have worked for. If Chris called me today, I would show right up. I do not think it’s fair and even true to call Chris a small time crook. With every interaction I had with him, he treated me with respect and was always fair. He actually took moments out of his day to explain his business and passion for these instruments. So I am not an expert on musical instruments but I can attest to the Chris’s character.

I have known Christopher Reuning and this shop professionally for over 20 years. He and every one of his staff is professional in every sense of the word, and has the respect of not only players from across the globe, but makers and restorers as well. I would, and do, recommend this shop enthusiastically and without reservation.

Best service and professional knowledge. Gracious help from Peter Jarvis setting up my Italian violin. The one place in Boston where I would go for advice, repairs, and a violin evaluation. Many thanks!

Reuning and Son is one of the finest violin shops in the world. They exhibit the greatest amount of skill and respect for stringed instruments and bows as well as the customers which they serve. Their dedication and generosity to the craft are unmatched.

Chris and his staff, some of whom have been with the shop for many years, have always been welcoming, friendly, and kind. Special thanks to Peter Jarvis! The shop feels posh, but never snobby. I have worked with them both for violin and bow repair/maintenance and have found the worksmanship and interpersonal relationships to be high quality and professional.

One of very few violin dealers I completely trust - my students have been getting instruments and bows from his shop for twenty years, and Ive never had any issues. Highly recommended!

I recently referred a client to Reuning and Sons.He was given a five star treatment over the course of an entire week. Came back the proud owner of a fantastic violin, with a big smile on his face. The few negative reviews in this thread, say more about the people complaining, than it does about Reuning and Sons!

I was in Boston for a conference and I wanted to stop by and try some violins. I had called and made an appointment for 2/7/19 that was rescheduled for 2/9/19 at the request of Peter Jarvis. Well, unfortunately I showed up on 2/9/19 for my appointment with Peter but Peter was a no show. Not sure what to think of this but certainly not professional experience.

I have gotten all of my instrument since I was a child from Reunings (I am now a professional violist). I cannot speak highly enough about this wonderful shop. The quality of their instruments and workmanship is well known throughout the world. Whenever I have visited the shop (either as a child, a conservatory student, or a professional), I have always been treated with care and respect. I have visited many other shops throughout the world who have, unfortunately, treated me disrespectfully or completely disregarded me. This has never happened at Reunings, nor could I ever imagine it happening. If you need a high-end instrument, Reunings is the place to go!

Chris Reuning is a pompous ass with no people skills. Totally agree with the previous reviewer-- Reuning comes across as a small time crook. He is the epitome of a scumbag violin dealer.

My wife and I were in Boston and we called Reuning & Son to let them know that we were from out of state and would like to see a some cellos. After seeing a Maria Joao Pires/ Bernard Haitink concert at the Boston Symphony on Friday, May 1, we made our best effort to get there at 4:30 pm, half an hour before their closing time. Despite the fact that we apologized for not being able to get there earlier and making sure that we were not keeping them we were simply blown off. We were just asked what price range we were looking for and if we could come back on the following Monday. We explained that we had to leave Boston on Sunday.I dont quite care when and why Reuning & Son merged with Johnson String Instrument or that they are one big dealer on the East Coast. Theres no explanation for their snobbery and humiliating attitude. Maybe Mr. Reuning, who appeared to me a small time crook, forgets that the community of strings players is a closely knitted one and that this kind of negative reviews ineluctably will be spread far and fast.My advise: stay away from this place like a plague. Good luck to you Mr. Reuning with your chasing the high end market!

As I was told by the receptionist, this is where you go in Boston if you are looking to buy (or get repaired) a $50,000+ violin. If thats not your market, then you might try their more populist subsidiary: Carriage House Violins in Newton.
