My friends know I love plant nurseries. One friend taking on a big landscape project asked me to recommend a nursery near DC, with fair prices, a wide selection, and knowledgable staff. I immediately recommended Patuxent. And they did not let us down. We were helped by Gabby who knew the best outdoor plants for my friend’s waterlogged yard. My friend wanted to attract butterflies and Gabby showed us the options for those as well. Several other staff members helped us protect and load up her truck with her selection. I was especially impressed because it started raining while we were shopping and Gabby grabbed her raincoat and kept on showing us around...well my friend around. I went inside the garden center to keep dry 😂. After picking her outdoor plants my friend had a question about an indoor plant that was dying and Gabby directed us to an indoor plant expert! By the end, my friend was raving about the stellar service and I was so glad to have converted another friend into a nursery lover! Thanks Patuxent!

Love this place, I got all my tropical plants and trees from here. The employees were very helpful with information on the plants as well as loading to them for me.

This nursery is a really great spot for all sorts of flowers and especially great at Maryland natives for beginners if youre just getting into that style. They have tropical plants and do a great job of decent prices for seasonal goods - especially for the DMV. As some reviewers have suggested, the main challenge is when you do bulk orders, especially as a residence. My neighbour and I split a delivery and there were mixusps on when and how many trucks were required and no one called to let us know theyd run out of product. When we did receive it, the topsoil was very heavy clay, hadnt really been screened as their website suggested and was a challenge to work with. So overall a great nursery, just take your time to get clarity if youre going for large bulk deliveries!

They had a lot of really nice plants and some rare ones but theyre extremely pricey. They had a lot of nice very full hanging baskets. Their greenhouse is fully stocked and their employees were really nice! I did get some alocasia and dragon scale but they were covered in mites so beware! Check and isolate them if you get anything from here.

Great Product! Poor Customer Service....So we went and made a large purchase and were informed that our delivery would be made for a set price. We NOW understand the day before delivery that it was supposed to be on TWO trucks. Seems like a mistake made by the Nursery should be made right by THE NURSERY.They called and told me that I need to pay them more money to fix their mistake..... ??? Their response to me is that its no problem for them to do a full return because they have more customers than just me. They do, but that is a shame to say that to someone. Treat others as you wish to be treated....I guess that means they wish for more bad reviews?Maybe that is just the world we live in, but I would never charge a customer to pay for my mistake. A Company who has any dignity would have taken care of that mistake. Now I am going to get a Mix of product that will ruin the product, and they still think that is ok.....I am torn! I am probably going to end up paying for a second delivery :(

I had a great experience.

I think they sell nice healthy plants. I wanted part sun/ low shade perennials. The plants were well marked with details about height and habitat. Staff was so nice and helpful. So far every experience has been positive. Parking is great.

The selection is fantastic! I have yet to leave this place without buying something every trip! On more than a few occasions I’ve been helped by very pleasant and knowledgeable staff.Unfortunately, Today I interacted with a grumpy guy named Mike in a blue shirt and he was awful. I wish I had asked for his last name, I think he’s a manager or something due to the stitched blue shirt with his name on it. Whatever role he plays in the organization should be reevaluated. I told him I was working on a project and before I could finish telling him the scope of what I needed he interrupted me and said “We don’t do donations at this time, check back in September”. I politely notified him that our organization raised the funds but we would like an expert to weigh in on the landscaping plans. The convo went down hill from there. I ended up heading outside and met another VERY helpful Mike in a red shirt. He was wonderful! Very knowledgeable, friendly and patient.We will make our purchase from Patuxent because they have great quality products, but blue shirt Mike can kick rocks with bare feet.

Never a bad experience at Patuxent. Customer Service and inventory are always professional and top notch! Im refreshing my landscaping to add to some perennials I bought from Patuxent 4 years ago. Great quality! And now the new house plant section is also amazing 👏🏾

Too bad you cant give a zero. Drove 3 hours total and they put the wrong plants in my car. Now have to drive another 3 hours to bring them back. COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME. USELESS.

Very nice selection of nursery items from seeds, annual/perennial plants, soils, tools and other accompaniments. Some plant prices are high, however, some garden items such as compost and fertilizer are cheaper or equal to Lowes/Home Depot (I bought Leaf Compost $4 and Garden Tone $11.98 for 8lb bag). Seeing this gives me confidence I dont need to exhaustively comparative shop for these items.I love how the organized the grounds: Perennials on 1 side of the Red Hooded tent and Annuals on the other, full sun items in the clear open, and shade items nearer to shade, and in alphabetical order!Next time, Ill pay more attention to the price of the tools as I was surprised at their cost at HD! This will be my 1st stop for prep items in the future---> Lowes ---> Home Depot.

I come to Patuxent for not only the huge plant selection, but mainly because their customer service is top notch! Thank you, Karen, for taking the time to educate me on ways to care for my fiddle leaf fig tree. And thank you to the young man who noticed that I didn’t have a drainage hole in the pot I planned to purchase. They drilled a hole for me and I was on my way. Excellent service!!!

I live nearby and have been going to Patuxent for a while. I discovered Homestead Gardens recently and admittedly was in awe, but I must say my most recent visit to Patuxent solidified them as my go to nursery. This is not a post to bash one nursery against the other as both are great but I have to say Patuxent has better prices and also offers a great selection.But what is most important to me is the service I received on my last visit. I am a super novice at gardening and have spent the past few months buying and returning several plants because I was overwhelmed by choices and what I didn’t know. Yet, the gardening angels were on my side this past weekend because I happened upon a Patuxent staff member named Camila (sp?). OMG I have never had anyone at a nursery take the small bits I shared with them about my gardening goals and pull everything together in terms of the best plants for my space, layout ideas, companion plant suggestions, and in depth tips about each plant. She even got a piece of paper and drew out an example to help me once I got home. A 3-month long struggle to pull my patio garden together was literally solved in one visit to Patuxent this past weekend. She was knowledgeable, friendly and, importantly didn’t make me feel uncomfortable about how little I knew.I’ve come across a few helpful people at Patuxent before...a few very nice ones actually...but no one has provided the depth of detail on plants, and actual guidance that she did. So Patuxent it is for me from now on😊

I went in today to purchase SOP. Got 4. 2 for myself cause I want a full basket. And 2 for two friends. I drove 40 mins out of my way to get there. No signs up about limits and there were about 25 baskets there. At the register the guy had a tough time ringing me. He called another guy over who said I never seen this before. Then that guy call a lady over who said WE HAVE A LIMIT OF TWO. I said ok, I drove 40 mins out my way to come check y’all out. She said I will approve this today but not again. And I better not find out you flipping my plants. I went ahead and purchased the plants cause while in there I told my two friends I would pick up for them but I will never purchase here again. She was rude. And I have a job. A good job I don’t flip plants. And the plants don’t belong to you miss. They are for sell remember. Abs I could have just driven back if you said you sticking to your limit. Poor poor poor customer service. Glad I am a changed woman cause I almost... never mind. Poor customer service. Don’t shop there. I will post this review in all my plant groups.

For many years I have been coming to this place to buy plants trees and more but today I have experience a really band action from one of the owners who driving like crazy passes me and blocking me from driving thru come out of the truck and start yelling at me to not speed and that i didnt stop on the signal but I think he didnt realize that the stop sign is for him thats why I didnt stop on it but I was not speeding at all how when im driving a trailer to pick up a mulch any way I think he was having a really bad day sorry for him here is the picture if you want people to stop on both sides then put a sign on both side or three sides before that you fight with the people, also I guess he has much money that he doesnt mind losing one costumer

So I when as a first time visitor and Novice in the plant department both encounters where tense. Being my first time I asked for help what expected and what I got didnt line up but proceeded to purchase after I was left to fend for myself. Get the counter ring up my plants (2) one plant rung at cost on sticker other rung up at 4.99. So because I was interested in purchasing another if that was the price I inquired if I could get another at that price. Not sure the young lady calls her manager I explained the situation. And ask could I get another at that price she no than put the actually price of the plant and erased wat the label rung up as. I asked her shouldnt I get it at the price it rung up. She again said no, I explained to her had I not inquired about buying another plant at that price and just paid what rung up than I would have gotten the plant at price it rung up. She said technically so I asked to get at the price was shown. Now point here is MOST BUSINESSES OWN UP TO THERE ERROR, BUT IT SEEM THAT I GOT INDIFFERENT TREATMENT....WHAT ARE THE COMPANY RULE ON SUCH MATTER....AND IM BLACK SO WAS THIS THE REASON I DIDNT GET TREAT WITH THE PROPER RESPECT AS A CUSTOMER. AND I ASK THE YOUNG LADY AT THE REGISTRATION FOR THE MANAGER AND COME FIND OUT SHE WAS THE MANAGER. Thanks but no Thanks

I went to this nursery for the first time today and was very pleased. I came for spring seedlings and found an excellent assortment of cool weather veggies: beets, chard, collards, spinach, lettuces, kale, broccoli, cabbages, pak choi... the list goes on... I cant wait to put them in my raised beds!

I LOVE this nursery, its almost like a little park.The associates are friendly and helpful and the plants are gorgeous.They only reason Im give 4 stars is because the succulents always look a little sad and dehydrated when I go. Id give 4.8 stars instado if I could.Overall, it is always a positive experience when I go and they have a great selection of plants.

I had a shockingly poor experience. A person/ the apparent manager of this place violated my personal space and removed her mask while speaking in the course of a single line of dialogue. There was no need for that. It put everyone around her in danger.I will not be spending my money here any time soon.

This nursery had a lot of variety, but it lacked signs and was hard to locate what I was looking for. There was a lot of staff standing around, but they were not too helpful.

Im new to landscaping and gardening. No one offered assistance. I walked around for an hour not sure of what was what. One guy moving vases spoke but he didnt know where anything was either.

Very organized and HUGE variety of plants. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. Nursery inventory doesnt always match online inventory, but nursery has sale prices that website does not have. Very good experience. Will return in the future.

Amazing plants and friendly faces.

Went to grab some wood and just waited. The cashier took 20 minutes to count 5 bags of mulch for the customer ahead of me and never got acknowledged. Plenty of workers walking by and only one person on a register? Hate this is the only one nursery. Just going to grab wood from home depot instead. Also they have a guy that works that they let walk around with a confederate flag mask. Absolutely unacceptable.

I started coming here after Behnke closed. Im a plant lover, but this place is mostly for people working on large outdoor projects. Not the best customer service and employees dont seem knowledgeable about their products. Ill be on the search for a real nursery with a better plant variety.

This is a huge lot with what felt like every type of plant imaginable! We went looking specifically for a King Sago Palm and they had an amazing selection for a great price. Their potting bench was very useful for someone living in an apartment. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful - highly recommended for your plant needs!

Great assortments of flowers.

I ordered 4 lilac shrubs thru Garden Goods Direct. They were shipped from Patuxent Nursery. These shrubs were just awful. More dead branches than alive. One bush was only 12 tall and had 4 branches. These were $60, 3 gallon shrubs. Absolutely no one would have selected them from a nursery. I cant believe they shipped these to me. Customer service was the worst. I sent pictures and after review they told me these plants were in excellent condition and refused to replace any or offer a refund. I will never buy anything from them again.

I was brought there for my birthday and was so happy with their selection of indoor plants. Ive never been before so I wasnt expecting the high cost of a lot of the plants but I did get a few plants and will visit again.

Ordered a bulk delivery of mulch and fortunately was home when the driver arrived. Order was dumped exactly where I requested but I questioned him on the total number of yards. I order the same amount each time from Patuxent and was positive that todays order was short. Driver said he could come back with the difference. Spoke to his boss and he agreed to check with the loader and driver. An hour later driver returned with the difference. Driver and Manager were very professional and took care of my concern immediately.

The employees are easily available when you have questions without being pushy. The selection is wonderful and will organized.

Bought a couple of Japanese Lilac trees. For $200, I got one three foot tree with a few leaves on it and the second tree was your basic stick. They dont look like $200 worth of trees. Wont be shopping online again.

Visited today for the first time. Loved walking around their extensive outdoor and indoor areas gazing at plants. Pots were half off, so I picked up a handful and got some interesting tropical plants for my collection. Staff was very knowledgeable about the plants, their unique requirements and treatment-will definitely return!

Rude, unprofessional, and a total disaster. I placed an order for 80 bags of brown mulch for a job. I had a crew of guys waiting to lay down the mulch for the site. On the delivery day, they brought the wrong color mulch. I understand that mistakes can happen, and expect that when a mistake happens the manager should immediately apologize and take responsibility and see what they can do to fix it. Instead, I never received a call back from the manager, Mark, and received the run around from the driver Larry and an employee named Pat. I made repeated and frantic calls to see if Mark could get on the phone and solve the problem (he was suddenly in a meeting and no one could say what time the meeting would end or if another manager was in place to solve the problem since apparently ALL managers were in this sudden meeting) and was never able to get through to him. Finally the driver screamed on the phone and asked if I thought everyone was just sitting around waiting to answer my call. What the eff? I am not at fault for this problem, you guys are, and damn right I expect the manager to at the very least get on the phone and see what they can do to solve it, especially when I have a crew of guys sitting around and am wasting money and time on a botched job thanks to your company. I am extremely disappointed and have never had such a hateful experience with a nursery -- BUYER BEWARE, do not do business with these guys, they could care less about you.

Very poor customer service, I spoke toKevin Flynn, the owner and Told him I never received my order. This was in mid may. To date I still have not received my order . I spoke to various employees About the order and was told that it would be rectified and to date nothing has been done. This is a terrible company to do business with and it is a wonder that they are in business. I would not recommend them at all. I now have to go thru PayPal to get a refund.

[Review based on house plant selection.]Wow!!Huge selection of plants, including rarities such as Philodendron painted lady, Monstera adansonii narrow and wide forms, sanseveria whale tail, and a huge selection of calathea (including white fusion!). Very large selection of succulents.Prices are on the higher side, but they were having a big sale when I was there so many were quite affordable.Health of the plants varied, some were sun bleached or overwatered, but I didn’t see any pests.Overall a great selection. I will definitely be back![UPDATE 8/27/2020]Went back and was amazed again by their house plant inventory. Not only did they have monstera adansonii in multiple sizes and affordable prices, they also had several large Alocasia Frydek ($30) and full Philodendron Micans in 6 inch pots for $25. If you’re a big houseplant nerd like me, you know how much of an amazing deal that is! Micans are near impossible to find right now- most places are sold out! The only place I have found them is on Etsy.com, averaging $10 per cutting. Updated my review to a full 5 stars.

Me and my girlfriend go here for all of our gardening needs as well as my aunt. We had bought some stones for the yard but they didnt have enough to finish the project and we were told by the following Friday they would be in. We called through out the week and they had not arrived and so on Friday we called...literally since they opened...literally all day and not one person answered the phone. I tried every extension, sent 2 emails and left a voicemail message...still no return call and literally not figuratively but literally called for 6 hours straight and they never answered the phone.I dont care what the situation is...not having someone to answer the phone especially when you were told to call and verify is tacky and unprofessional. And of course all they will offer is some lame apology which doesnt make up for the time I set aside today to pick up my item. And if they arent professional enough to answer the phone its not even worth the chance of driving all the way up there to expect based on their word the item is in stock. Based on other reviews this is a pattern with this place. Might have to cut them off after this.

Love this place. We drove 45 minutes to get here and bought multiple plants and will be going back for more. We received excellent service/recommendations from every member of their team. If you are starting out as a planter or advanced, definitely visit.

This nursery is one of the BEST! They have great quality in their flowers and plants. The store has always been very well stocked on the times that I have visited. And the staff has always been friendly and helpful. I highly recommend.

I placed an order on the evening of May 25th for which I paid through PayPal. The next morning - well before the seven day estimate to ship - I called to cancel the order before anything shipped. No one answered my call on that morning, as well as my follow up calls each of the next three days. Concurrently, I submitted e-mails through their portal, all of which went unanswered for several days. I spoke with an employee via phone on day four, and I was told I would receive a call back from someone who could process the order cancellation - I never did. Only after some online searching, I manage to uncover another e-mail address associated with Patuxent Nursery, and after two e-mails to that address I started getting responses. I was told the order would be refunded, and to permit several business days for it to process. Refund never arrived after nine business days. Initiated PayPal dispute, and alerted Patuxtent Nursery to the same. I was told they would expedite the refund (so I could cancel the dispute). Refund never arrived. PayPal, obviously, decided the dispute in my favor and refunded my money.

What a beautiful nursery. The have so many wonderful plants that are both native to the area and tropical too. Well organized and well educated staff. I cant stay out of this nursery...absolutely love it.

Patuxent Nursery aka Garden Goods Direct is one of the WORST ONLINE RETAILERS I have ever dealt with order 2 plants from them on May 18th. Have tried to call and email with no response. Payed with PayPal and have contacted them with complaints.

The employees are very knowledgeable and there is an incredible selection.

This review is for the phone operator function only. We love Patuxent Nursery, and have found unusual plants there that we could not find elsewhere.This week, we wanted to place a bulk order for mulch (their prices are very competitive). I called at 8:30 am and there was no answer, so I checked the hours and they were open. I called again around 9 am and got a young woman who said that department was too busy so she would give them a message. I did not get a call back for a while, so I called again around 11 am, reached the same young woman, who agreed to try to transfer my call this time. After some clicking and waiting, my call was disconnected. So my husband got in the car and drove from Annapolis to Bowie to place the order. I know it is spring and things are getting busy, but there has to be a better way.

We have purchased 4 crepe myrtles and some perennials from Patuxent Nursery and are very happy with everything. The last 2 visits we have had the pleasure of being helped by Dylan. He was very knowledgeable, helpful and polite. We will be back!Patti and Vernon Stricklin

I have visited and used several nurseries in Prince Georges County, but nothing compared to Patuxent Nursery. When garden season is in full swing, from the moment you pull up, you are greeted by the sight of a well taken care of facility and a wide variety of plants. The plants are well organized by type and needs and many of them are clearly marked with special identifiers such as deer resistance and Maryland native plants. I went to Patuxent to pick up several perennials, gardening supplies and some annuals to fill a new garden bed. I chose several Maryland native perennials and some flowers, when I found a plant that I wanted to buy several of. The problem was that it was the only one in the grouping that wasnt wilting, so I asked a worker that was passing by if there were any others. Immediately she noticed that the streaks that I thought was just variegation and part of the plant, were actually a sickness and told me that I shouldnt buy it. She then asked if all the other plants had the same streaks and when I told her they did she had another worker pull them from the shelves. She explained that the plant I had chosen would die and probably affect other plants in my garden. She then assisted me in finding suitable replacement plants with the same needs and height that I was looking for. I picked up a Maryland native perennial that was the perfect size to line my front path and while I bought it for its threadlike foliage it ended up flowering for most of the season. We had some pretty harsh snow this winter but even in February I can see that most, if not all, of the perennial plants are going to make it. (10-20 snow buried them for almost two weeks.) We even had a surprise annual survive. I enjoyed my visit last year, enjoyed my garden longer than I thought I would, and will be returning this year for my gardening supplies, a few more perennials and all the annuals in my garden.

Patuxent always offers great advice and assistance when I visit. The selection is always healthy and well stocked. My customers are primarily in DC, yet I travel to Patuxent to fill all of their request. They are just that good!

This place operates under the name Garden Goods Direct online. Check out both websites with the same address. I brought a fiddle leaf fig tree and it arrived with multiple broken leaves/stem. I’ve contacted them twice with my correspondences going unresponded. Their F rating from the BBB should tell you all you need to know!

I bought a fiddle leaf fig tree from this entity and had it delivered to my home. Upon arrival it was covered in brown leaves. I thought perhaps I could save it with TLC. A month later the leaves were more brown and falling off. I ask the company for a replacement or refund and was denied both. They do not care about quality products or service.

Lovely selection of plants. Ive gotten plants here for years and have yet to have one die. Theyre very friendly, the selection is huge, and my kids love going there even just to look around.
