Hi: I have never been in your store, at least not since 1962, but I was wondering if you would be interested in knowing what your building was WAY back in 1955 or so? I lived in Columbia during that time and thought you might get a kick out of knowing that your store used to be a very popular neighborhood drug store. We used to go in there all the time and get these wonderful sodas and it was like going back in time...they actually had a old fashioned soda counter and sold many other items from that time in history. I am glad to see that the building is still standing and also being used as a store. I sometimes have had occasion to visit the old neighborhood and would love to go back into your store to see how it has changed! Thanks for reading this and hope you get a charge out of knowing there is a LOT of History surrounding your building!
Service was impeccable and they were very knowledgeable. I was totally lost when I walked in but I was quickly helped.
Wonderful experience. Very quick and helpful service. I will always recommend coming here.
My daughter is 6 and showed an interest in learning to play violin. After her initial lesson we went to Palmetto Strings to rent an instrument. One of the apprentices, Marissa, was very helpful in showing us how their process worked. Then owner Gregg Lange further explained how his shop worked and how to care for a violin. He told us all sorts of interesting information. We got to see one of the rooms with lots of very special instruments inside. My daughter was very excited by the experience and is inspired to begin her lessons with gusto at Carolina Music Academy.
Gas light me into buying a bow for my sons instrument. Payed about 900 dollars for it just for it to be appraised by 7 different appraisers all which said it’s worth under 200 dollars. Only shop here if you want to be misled.
Expertly knowledgeable staff.
I had an opportunity to visit Greggs shop for a couple of days last weekend. Gregg does a fabulous job with repairing and restoring instruments. Ive been playing a cello from him for years and am extremely happy with it. His rental and apprenticeship programs are top notch. I have a better understanding from working with Gregg and Marissa that patience, experience, and expertise is needed to work on any stringed instrument. Gregg and Marissa have those qualities. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to watch how you operate...
Extremely knowledgeable and experts in their craft. These guys are the right people to go to for all your string instrument needs. The building is a little difficult to get to, just off the I-126 into Columbia, but well worth it. Do yourself a favor and go see these talented individuals.
If you’re a strings player in or near Columbia, this store is a lifesaver! Greg and his whole team are always a pleasure to work with. Whenever there’s something violin-related that I need, Palmetto Strings usually has it. Repairs and adjustments are always great quality, and prices are fair and affordable. Top-notch business with top-notch people!
I have been playing the violin for many years now and purchased a violin, handmade by Gregg himself, when I moved on to orchestra in High School. I remember specifically picking the sound of this violin over a $200,000 violin that I had the luxury of playing. I have been out of high school for 5 years now and still have the violin to this day. It sounds just as beautiful as it did to begin with and I have always visited Palmetto Strings for their outstanding work! Gregg and his staff are very knowledgeable in the string world and are able to handle emergency situations with professionalism and good quality work.
Very impressed with this strings shop in Columbia. Gregg is over-the-top with his knowledge of the strings industry. I suppose you could call him THE EXPERT. Staff and apprentices are all knowledgeable and very friendly. Glad I stopped in to check this place out because it is a must for any aspiring or serious strings player.
Palmetto Strings is the coolest string store I have ever been to! When it comes to passion for string instruments, knowledge of current trends in the field, history of how the field has evolved, and top notch customer service, Palmetto Strings simply cannot be outmatched! Every time I stop by the store, I am greeted with a friendly welcome, eagerly helped with my concern, and taught at least one (often several) helpful techniques about the care and maintenance of my instruments. I am so happy to have found Palmetto Strings! Finally, I have someone I can count on and trust in the music business!
Very good and knowledgeable staff. If you need stringed instrument help this is the place to go. Totally worth it. Easier to loop around to get to the parking. They only use the finest horse hair from eastern Europe for their bows. They can re string. Great shop. Its not a music shop they are highly specialized in stringed instruments.
My new go-to place for repairs, after getting a run around from my local music store. The folks at Palmetto Strings REALLY know their instruments, and re-haired my bow and gave my fiddle a tune up in less than 2 hours. Their prices are very reasonable, and the owner is extremely knowledgeable about the care and playing of the stringed instruments he sells and repairs, as well as knowledgeable about local opportunities for classes, workshops, and gigs. The storefront isnt fancy, and when you step through the door, its obvious that this is a workshop, but their customer service, friendliness, and expertise cant be found in your local chain music store. Highly recommend!
Very honest gentlemen! Learned more in 5 minutes from them than hours of online searching! Very fair offers!
Amazing
The owner, Gregg goes above and beyond for his customers! Very knowledgeable in his craft, with no bs. Not only will they give you a great instrument, but also inform you about how to best care for it for a lifetime of enjoyment. One stop shop for anything you need to begin or continue your strings journey. Thank you Gregg and staff!
Incredibly amazing staff. More than reasonable prices. Should be ranked 10 Stars not just five
I inherited my grandfather’s violin. This violin had meant a lot to him going back as far as when he played in his high school orchestra, but it had seen better days. It had cracks, was neglected, and basically in need of much TLC. I knew I wanted to spend the money to get it restored, but by whom? Who could I trust to handle such a precious and emotional instrument such as this? A friend told me about Palmetto Strings and how the owner there was very experienced with stringed instruments in many respects, including professional restoration. So I called. Gregg Lange was exactly what I was looking for. He listened to my story, knew how much this instrument meant to me, and put my fears to rest. He told me about his many years in the music industry and how this was his life’s work. I knew he would take good care of my grandfather’s instrument and me. Not only did Gregg restore my violin to perfection, he told me of its history and origin. I learned that the violin was much older than I thought and a fairly valuable instrument. I never would have known that had it not been for Gregg.Gregg, thank you for being so kind and patient. You took your time to teach me so much and you did it with a smile. I will forever be grateful. If you ever need to buy, restore, or even learn about stringed instruments, Gregg will take good care of you. I am very happy with the service and quality of work I received from Palmetto Strings in Columbia, SC.
Very knowledgeable and detailed. Great customer service. They seem to love what they do. They did a same day repair on a bass bow.
Very eager to help you and make sure you succeed. offer in-house services and discounts to customers. will frequent them for my string needs.
Great knowledgeable helpful staff. Quality professional work.
Very knowledgeable shop. Expert service for stringed instruments.
Palmetto Strings is the most knowledgeable, competent, skilled, full-service shop for the sale, rental, repair, and refurbishment of bowed string instruments anywhere in the greater SC midlands, and arguably the entire state. Gregg Lange and his staff have provided necessary maintenance on my original violin and viola; and I purchased a beautiful hand-made (upgraded) violin from him a couple of years ago. We also entrusted Palmetto Strings with the outstanding refurbishment of a family heirloom violin that is over 150 years old. Palmetto Strings continues to be my source for new strings and re-hairing of my bows. In almost every case, all needed repairs and/or routine maintenance were professionally completed while I waited.
I travel from Spartanburg County to have my daughters violin needs serviced exclusively by Gregg & his team. There is no where else in the entire region (maybe even the world) that I would trust our instruments to. Gregg has even helped us by shipping her instruments (when weve not been able to conveniently make it down to Columbia), and in those instances he took extra care to be sure the instrument was well packaged and protected for safe transit. He emanates everything Ive come to expect of him, as he is a true expert in his craft. I have never witnessed a teacher, musician, string expert, or retailer who displays as much concern and pride in his products, his craftsmanship, and ensuring his customers have the best possible experience and outcome. The finest luthier Ive ever seen. We are blessed to have someone of his skill so easily accessible (and centrally located) in the Palmetto state. Gregg - truly, thank you for all youve done over the past 9 years that Madison has been playing.
I would caution anyone considering bringing their instrument here for repairs. I recently brought my violin in to get a new bridge and precision pegs installed. When I got it back they had done a shoddy job on fixing the nut near the scroll, and upon further inspection the bridge was not fitted at all to the instrument and the sound post was not properly fitted either. I ended up breaking 2 bridges before realizing it was a mistake to bring it here. Completely unacceptable work and a waste of money, and I will not be back. The man who works here also seems to like making unprofessional slights about other businesses. You can message me if you need a recommendation on a proper luthier.
Awesome place to have orchestra instruments repair and friendly service.
Most helpful and polite people Ive met.
Great service on my violin, and as an apprentice Ive learned so much under Gregg Lange, very happy to be associated with Palmetto Strings!
Ive been a customer of Luthier Gregg H. Lange since November of 2008. Hes a font of knowledge about stringed instruments, as his father was in the stringed instrument business before him.
Went in last Saturday and worked with Gregg, my experience was fantastic. He truly is a master at what he does and I dont think you can go anywhere better than this location in the state of South Carolina. For reference, Ive played violin for about 11 years and have been to shops up and down the east coast. We arranged to switch out my pegs, strings, and rehair my bow. I truly learned a lot about the instrument and the luther craft as well as watch Gregg take extremely good care of my instrument. Prices were very reasonable and honestly the level of attention is miles beyond what youd get at a standard repair shop.I really appreciate the great service and if you need an instrument worked on - this is the place to go.This truly is a long term relationship with a trusted master that you wont find elsewhere, once you visit once, youll never go elsewhere.
Owner is very rude. A post from a year ago states he has no one employed at his shop under 18 which is a lie. He has several working there now and all are under 18 including one that is only 14. Has taken them to lunch at Twin Peaks, not the strip club but still not a place for a young girl.
The owner made me feel completely uncomfortable and was inappropriate with me do not recommend any women coming into the store
Tried to sell me a set of Evah Pirazzi violin strings for $120, which is $60 more expensive than Amazon.
Beyond rude, but the only place for quality repairs unless you go to Greenville.
Perfect! No other words can describe it!
Knowledgeable and friendly folks!
The manager there is a pervert...he was hitting on an 18 year old girl. And he is 60 years old.. Very bad. 😈
Not only will they sell you a new instrument, they will service and repair an instrument you already own
