We went there on a Saturday evening and it was very crowded. I tried the milk and sesame flavor for the ice cream and nutella for the filling of the waffle. The ice cream and waffle both tasted pretty good. I wish they had more flavors to pick from and also they play very loud music inside the store which makes it hard to hear staff while ordering.
This is another hype dessert that i saw peopleare lining up at LA, when i saw it that in front of my hotel there is Somi Somi then i said to myself i gotta try it 🤣, i wait until off peak hour around 15:00 weekdays and there was no line. At first i think the sesame is good but its clearly overpowered by the milky taste, should get sesame only. But my wife matcha n ube (i think its taro), was better than me. The taiyaki is soft, chewy and filled by custard, i like it, definitely should try if there is no line
First time here, ordering was quick and easy. Staff was very patient and helpful even with a long line. Payment was quick and easy. The pastry was perfect, crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside with just enough of the filling (got custard) to let you know its there but not enough to over power the ice cream (matcha/ube swirl)Would highly recommend.
Dont be deterred by the long line! It moves very fast and I suspect its more due to people who are waiting for their order than actual people standing in line. I got the upside-down taiyaki with red bean and ube sesame swirl ice cream. The taiyaki was perfectly crunchy, and the ice cream was delicious, though I think this style makes it more difficult to eat the ice cream and the taiyaki together (I ended up scooping some ice cream into my taiyaki and using it as a cone). I think this place should consider giving everyone numbers and calling out the numbers in order, as opposed to the currently (slightly chaotic) system of calling names, so that people know when their numbers are next, but all in all this is a great place for a sweet treat! Definitely recommend!
Ive wanted to try SomiSomi for some time now and it was just as good as advertised! For the soft-serve, you can opt to have it just as a cup (no fish), in the fish, or to have the fish as a party hat. With the hot weather, a party hat was the funnest way to go. They offer only preset swirl flavors based on the week but this weeks specials were right up my alley with ube/matcha winning my heart. Black sesame/milk was the other option which Im sure would have been equally good. For the fish, you get to choose a spread on the inside. I went with traditional red bean and really enjoyed it! Several friends went with custard and another with Nutella, we all enjoyed our choices very much!To top it off, we also ordered a couple taiyaki. One Oreo and one taro. The Oreo one was fun with a double stuffed Oreo baked right in like a Japanese style deep fried Oreo! The taro one was on the sweet side with the filling being more like halaya than just taro. It was still yummy but a little sweet for me. Overall, the fish texture was fun. The outside is super crisp like a delicious waffle but nice and chewy inside with the mochi.Definitely would welcome many a return trip when Im in the area!
My staff (veronica) was simply amazing. She was beyond patient with me when I ordered, and even when I had to spend 2 minutes looking for change. Im definitely coming back here thanks to this wonderful service and food.
Oh my goodness! Where to start?! I’ve been lately obsessed with the flavor of Matcha and I love that I was able to get a swirl of Matcha and another flavor that was purple, I forget if it was Ube or Taro but either way fantastic! Great quality because you don’t get that chemical taste that stays in your mouth for way too long like with lower quality places. The fish was warm and chewy, a nice contrast to the soft serve. The custard was a good complement and the toppings put a smile on my face! Thank you for training your staff to be so kind and thoughtful! A+
Took my son to have soft serve and the filling was delicious and texture was indescribable. Nothing else like it out there. Definitely a must try.
The ice cream was tasty I got milk and sesame which was alright. I tried my friends matcha and ube which was really good. The taiyaki was also very tasty! They also offer topping like captain crunch, cooked coconut, etc. which makes the experience even better.
They have soft serve and taiyaki, and both are great! Fresh waffles with soft serve and both made excellently!
My go to place for ice cream! My favorite is the milk Ice cream with Nutella filled waffle. So delicious! Don’t be scared of the long line, line moves fast! We went on a Sunday night and the line was long but it was for people waiting on their order, no line for placing an order. We waited less than 10mins. Would highly recommend trying this place it!
The Taiyaki is nice. The place usually has 5min - 15min wait. The place is “pick up and go” so don’t expect to be able to sit and eat.
Not the fastest place to get ice cream, but you can watch them making your fresh fish shaped waffle-ish cone so that’s reasonably entertaining. Could use more flavour options but then that’s probably because of my Western palate immediately eliminating items like green tea and red bean as possibilities. The fish cones can also be sealed up as the titular taiyaki which is effectively a fish waffle dumpling with less heat sensitive dessert fillings.
This place is always super packed even on weekdays. there’s not really a designated waiting area so everyone is just kind of scattered around the place, which is a little irritating. the soft serve was pretty good though, and so was the ah-boong! my friend got the ube & i just got the regular milk flavor. both were soo yummy😍! definitely try the custard flavor for the waffle cone if you go here. mostly the problem was the parking and the wait, but i think its worth it!!
Very delicious, the matcha and milk soft serve was very tasty. Not too sweet at all which was very nice. You can get the ice cream served in a fish shaped waffle cone, the waffle cone flipped in a cup and just the soft serve alone as well. They add topping to the soft serve and they do have fillings for the waffle. Overall a good place and I would come back again. FYI: they change flavors every week.
In A Nutshell:-Somisomi as you are already well aware of is a South Korean dessert company that specializes in ah-boong style soft serve ice cream.-If you have some patience & wait you can experience this awesome treat.-There are options galore to create your special soft serve treat.-The upside down (ah-boong) w/ nutella inside the fish shaped waffle was OUTSTANDING.Overall, this is a nice little shop located on Main Street Cupertino.
Very tasty Taiyaki (Japanese fish-shaped cake: batter with red bean paste inside or any other kind available at the store). It has to be consumed within 20mins or the batter will get soggy or starts to harden. I like the nutella and my kids like the red bean. There is usually a 10 to 15 minute wait, but I think it is worth it.
Crowded, but the service was fast. We were out in just few minutes. Got Green Tea Ice Cream with upside down fish stuffed with custard. More than the ice cream, fresh waffle fish tasted so good. Green tea taste was strong but the custard helped us finish it. Heard that black sesame is one must-try. Will see you soon.2nd Visit: Got Milk-Ube swirl and Sesame with upside down ah-boong stuffed with custard. Again black sesame flavor was strong. Milk-Ube swirl was the winner.
So nice to have a taste of los angeles koreatown here in the bay. the taiyaki is always a fun treat... though my fish cone had almost no red bean in it :( i got the matcha and my friend got the ube/milk swirl. you can also get the taiyakis with filling for to-go.
Ice cream a bit too sweet, but the taiyaki is so good
The soft serves are good, but the taiyaki are worth it just by themselves!
It’s good, but maybe not worth the 30mins wait. The 鲷鱼烧 is one of the best I had, but the ice cream is just so so.
Tasty concept, but inconsistent experience. My first visit, the fish was freshly made and warm, which made the Nutella and ice cream mesh well (think hot chocolate molten lave cake with ice cream - yum).My second visit, the fish was cold (think cold chocolate lava cake with ice cream - what?).The ice cream is good, but the warmth of the fish is what makes this concept unique. Either way, great concept, but inconsistent experience.
**NOTE: due to the COVID-19 situation, SomiSomi is only accepting credit card as a contactless payment option**Located in the heart of Cupertino Main Street, SomiSomi is a serves up a sweet treat in about 10 minutes or less (minus time you may or may not spend waiting in a line). When Im craving some ice cream, SomiSomi has been one of my go-tos in the south Bay Area. This little dessert shop serves up their classic Ah-Boong and a selection of taiyakis. You can find their weekly swirl flavors either on their Instagram or Facebook. The ordering process is pretty straight forward, select how you want your ice cream- in an Ah-Boong or a cup. Then select the filling for your Ah-Boong. Easy! After that, youll pay for your selections. Once theyve prepared your ice cream, you have the option of adding a macaron or a strawberry. They also have a small selection of topping, which includes my favorite oreo crumbs. My personal favorite is their milk flavor (and whatever combination it may come with) in cup, topped with an upside-down Ah-Boong filled with custard. Last but not least, dont overlook their taiyakis! If youre craving something savory to go with your ice cream, their cheese taiyakis is a must have!
Always sooooo good!! The taiyaki is always made to order and nice and hot when we get it! But do expect a line as it is very popular
Great ube/matcha swirls with coconut sprinkles
Ive been coming to this location so many times! But every time I went, the combination of swirls was never to my preference so I always got the matcha & milk swirls! But I noticed you can follow their weekly combo-swirls on either their website or IG! I love their soft serve more than any other soft serve places. Its so flavorful and creamy, plus the speedy service! I like how they have several options for fillings, as well as, toppings. Ive gotten my swirls naked (with nothing on it) and topped with a strawberry or topped with coconut(?) shavings and cookie crumbles. I noticed they have coffee flavors at other locations so I guess different locations have different flavors, bummer! I really want to try their coffee flavor next!
Got the ahboong matcha ube swirl. The mix of both flavor was really good. I chose the Nutella filing but could hardly see any!
Taiyaki is amazing. Crispy on the outside and chewy inside, just as the place promised. My only complaint is the soft-serve. Its not as unique as the taiyaki. I wish the flavors are stronger
This is a must try ice cream place… I love both Ah-Boong upside down and Tayiaki. The milk, ube flavor and custard filling is really good.
This Korean dessert place provides smooth milk softies mixed the goldfish pastries. First the ice cream. It is not your regular vanilla soft serve. It is highly milky and has almost a condensed milk taste. Combine that with this unique fish-shaped waffle baked on the spot. And top it off with custard or nutella and you have a winning recipe. And finally with reasonable prices. ❤
Great position, nice and clean, very friendly staff, very good quality icecream, amazing soft and creamy
The matcha ice cream texture was good but the taste is too sweet. And you will get tired of it after the first time. The taiyaki is crispy but the filling is also too sweet. The line is too long. I waited in front of the store for at least an hour. They should just allow people to order on their phone or at least show a queue of customers online where customers can see where they are at.
They rotate their swirl flavors on a weekly basis. This week is the matcha with Oreo, and ube with milk.Their soft serve is creamy and the ube and Matcha both taste pretty good, unlike some stores you can rates the flavors were so fake. The Ah Boong (the fish) is chewy has the Michigan texture inside, which I like a lot.You can choose different filling inside too.The custard was too sweet for my taste. Taro was good. Havent tried other fillings yet.I like how you pay a fox price and get whatever toppings you like, just wish you loaded the cup with topping. I really like eating the soft serve with the toasted coconut, even tho I tell them to put more...It is gone in the first few bits. :(I came here on a Saturday late afternoon, the line isnt too long, and it moves quickly, I waited about 20min.Be careful when you get your cup with the fish, as the fish may fall. It happened to me, as I grab my cup and turn around, the wish on top of the soe serve fell on the floor, luckily the were able to replace the fish for me.
Best ice team in bay area. You should try
Ive seen Taiyaki a lot from people that visited NYC, so I was excited when I found it on my visit to San Jose.I got Ah-Boong with black sesame/ube swirl, filled with custard, and topped with fruity pebbles and a macaron. My husband got Ah-Boong with milk ice cream, filled with taro, and topped with fruity pebbles and a macaron. Both were delicious. I loved the taro filling and the ube/black sesame swirl the most. The Taiyaki was delicious and the perfect compliment to ice cream. My only complaint is that youre supposed to be able to choose whether you want it in a cup or just in the Taiyaki. They didnt ask which I wanted and just put it in a cup which I didnt want. The portion size for the cup was huge. We definitely could have split one. This is definitely a great spot to stop and get a delicious, unique dessert.
Same owner as the sul bean next door, but quality is much better. Usually there will be a line during popular hours. However, compared to grand opening, the line is much more tolerable and only about 15 - 20 minutes.I want to try ube+matcha swirl but somehow always manage to come during inopportune times. Yesterday, the fish that they put on the ice cream fell off as I walked out, the ppl there was kindly enough to replace it for me for free.
The macha ube swirl is quite refreshing here. There is a line and some wait time here. Incorporating the time spent and the order here I would say this place is a bit hyped.I was disappointed by the little amount of Nutella inside the fish :|
Both the matcha and ube were great!
Went here for the first time yesterday! The ice cream was OK and taiyaki with Nutella was delicious but the employee was very rude. So, I’m a black woman, so I immediately felt out of place.. but the employee made me feel so much more unwelcome.. I told her it was my first time and she didn’t seem enthusiastic or happy to help me with the menu. As I was trying to figure out my order, she was talking extremely fast and was rushing through my order the whole time, I would MAYBE understand if it was a busy weekend but it was literally a Thursday at 2pm🥴.. and then to top it off she screamed my name super loud when I was standing right at the door. It was very inappropriate. Then when she asked what toppings I wanted she wouldn’t make any eye contact and acted like I wasn’t even there, fully unresponsive and seemed robotic. Once she was done she rudely put my ice cream on the counter and didn’t even say “have a nice day” or anything. Very disappointing experience and I will not be back ever again.
Very pretty looking soft service on fish shaped cone. Not every flavor on their website is offered at store. 4 flavors and 2 swirl each month. Taste is alright. If no waiting would be a nice treat, but with 40+ minutes standing in lines under the sun, not too sure it is all worth. May come back when no queue anymore.
Really good :) I don’t give 5 stars often. Everything I got was great. Everything my girlfriend got was great. The service was quick but still friendly. There’s a huge line there, but it’s for a reason, because they’re so good. Oh did I mention it’s actually pretty cheap? $6 per bowl feels like a steal after you taste it.
My first time and I had a great experience. It’s small inside but I was glad to catch a decent line, and it moved pretty fast. Usually it’s outside and wrapped around the corner towards the other food places.I asked someone in line for suggestions and what to order because I had no idea and I felt overwhelmed. So, you get a soft serve flavor either by itself or swirled depending on the flavor of the week. And then you choose if you want a cone, in a cup with the cone on top, or just all cup. You also choose your stuffing if you get a cone and then later choose toppings.I got a matcha and milk swirl with the custard stuffed cone ahboong upside down + a macaron and fruity pebble topping for $5.95. I ate before so I was super full but this was enough to share with another person. It’s pretty creamy and filling. The custard and the soft yet crunchy cone was suuuuper good!
Absolutely delicious. The fish shaped pastry is heavenly!
Finally I visited SomiSomi! I bought 5 taiyakis and ube & matcha swirl on taro filled taiyaki. Ube/matcha swirl was DELICIOUS! But its so hard to eat. Ice cream started melting pretty quickly and dripping. The taiyaki cone was buried in the sleeve so that it was hard to take it out from the sleeve without dripping. However, I really liked the ice cream. Id come back and try other flavors.
TL;DRFood: 4.5 🥘Service: 3/5 👩🏻🍳Such delicious ice cream!! Highly recommend for anyone craving a unique ice cream experience in the bay area!! Amazing for pictures as well 😊!!Will be returning in the future!
We went on a weekend and in the afternoon, there was a small line. The customer service was great they were patient and didnt mind sampling flavors. I got the Ube flavor. I was extremely happy with it especially since it was not overly sweet. My only complaint was the seating outside was extremely sticky from prior customers.
By far the best ice cream Ive ever had. Will 10/10 go again.
Finally, Somi Somi in NorCal!It was a little difficult to find for but in the end we found it.I would describe where it was but I am really not good with the directions over there. The place is just like the stores in SoCal.Same concept, same flavors.Make sure to check what flavors they have that day because they rotate. The store is also small and does not have any seating indoor. The line wasnt too long and moved fast but I did go on a Tuesday night when it was raining.
You’ll be long frozen in line waiting to order before you get the ice cream. If you do make it through the 30+ minute wait on a weekday, the prize is nice. The mochi style taiyaki is soft and buttery on the inside paired with nice light crunchy on the inside. They offer five filings: custard, cheddar, nutella, taro, and red bean. Each one of the are smooth and fresh. There is a pairing for everyone. The four different ice creams are Oreo, matcha, Ube and milk. We had the ube and milk, both of which tasted very close to the source. A store which serves two good products is rare, especially for their low asking price. A new gem in the square, if you don’t shiver at the wait.
The new popular Asian dessert place, placed right next to Meet Fresh; competition is good. There are very limited options as to what flavors there are as they are on a cycle determined by the store itself. As far as what there is to get here, its a variation of taiyaki and frozen yogurt/ice cream. You can mix and match the two. The picture is the tail end of the taiyaki embedded into the frozen yogurt/ice cream; there was also a macaroon in it. Its not bad, but Meet Fresh is better.
Came here after dinner with a friend the other night for some dessert. Was very impressed with the quality. The taiyaki was extremely soft and chewy, I was afraid it would be dry.We were very impressed with their quality but kind of bummed with their choices of toppings. I wish the Oreos weren’t crushed into a fine powder. The fruity pebbles were left whole, which made for nice texture, but they only put them on half of the ice cream.Overall, great experience and I would come back.
