Walked in after no one was in the front to greet me and asked about vinyls after 5 minutes. The gentleman disagreed my question and circled around his mouth implying to “wear a mask.” I attempted to repeat the question and before I could finish, he said “YOU NEED TO HAVE A MASK ON.” I understand everyone’s personal take on mask but understand masks are not mandatory anymore let allow as a current business owner forcing customers to do something is the fastest way to have NO customers hence way I was the only one there.Personally I will never be back here. Note to management and who this concerns to for the store learn to use a better choice of words, this is still Oak Cliff, the right customer may take this the wrong way and make your day.
Awesome store with all sorts of books and some really unique finds. Great set up. Cant wait to visit again
A recent arrival in Dallas, I discovered this great used bookstore today, dropping in on the way back from an errand and ending up spending upwards of an hour and buying a couple of books on my TBR list. Youd love this place if are a serious reader or a budget-conscious collector or the kind that enjoys hunting for known titles and authors. I wish they could offer more bargain prices (as I understand they used to do) and airconditioning, but these are difficult times. I look forward to my next visit!
I’m sorry to report that tomorrow, May 3, 2018, the Oak Cliff branch of Lucky Dog Books will be closing. Today was my first visit and i have to admit being a bit emotional as I walked through the store. I have fond memories of book stores in Southern California in the 80’s and 90’s... this store is as stuffed to the brim, nook-filled, supremely comfortable and quiet as I remember those other places. I was the only customer there the 1hr.+ I browsed, which I suppose explains why it’s closing. The Casa Linda and Mesquite (Paperbacks Plus) stores remain open. Please support small businesses!
I love this place the selection is huge. I could spend hours in this place and only see a fraction of the books they have. The customer service is awesome.
I really enjoy this bookstore, and this is coming from a bibliophile. I read often, and I allow people to borrow books frequently, which can sometimes lead to situations wherein I lose track of books and others are never returned. I also dont like to pay a lot for books, as I dont expect them to last forever with me reading them so often, and lending them out. This bookstore holds true to my idea of a rare gem. Its quiet, well organized, and well lit, without having to use too much artificial lighting. Its also very affordable, with some books even costing as little as $1. The pricing model is clear, consistent, and fair. Ive found so many books here, some of them first edition, vintage, rare finds, others books that you can find elsewhere, but at a much higher price.I also enjoy being able to spend several hours here. I dont feel pressured to buy anything quickly, there isnt any loud, obtrusive music, and there are chairs that can be found throughout the store to sit in. Towards the front of the store, there is even a table surrounded by sitting chairs. There is a Chess set and a Dominos set on the aforementioned tables next to the sitting chairs for you to play, as well.In a nutshell: I visit this bookstore often, it has a wide array of books, plus lots of areas to sit and read.
Amazing selection, helpful service, I look forward to coming again asap
The owner is very kind. The books are Superb and the place is beautiful. No one can beat the price! This place is amazing!
Many books. Staff is helpful.
Awesome bookstore! Everything is $3 or less and parking is easy. Like the other Lucky Dog branches, theres a huge selection.
I love this bookstore! I was so excited to find my favorite childhood book Chrysanthemum in like new condition for an awesome price. I cant wait to read it to my kids.
Loved it the cashier was so nice a friendly just wished there was way more manga but there was so many choices :)
Horrible service!! No wonder they arent doing well. Store had no AC, guy in the front was not helpful. Acted as if it were a bother to ask him questions. Offered no assistance to anyone. He actually made customers leave because he had nobody to relieve him. SERIOUSLY!! Why have a sale not adequately staff. If you want to turn around your store maybe hire helpful people. People who actually love books and love to assist.
Used book store that has hidden gems to be found if you can give yourself time to look. the kind of place you hope never changes.
Wonderful used book store. Friendly staff. Buy. Trade. What a nice way to spend an hour :)
Lucky dog is better than half price books. I had an acct in 2017.I go in and mention my name and its like zi never left. If lucky dog doesnt have it,they are like the library. They will notify you when the book is in their store.
Love this store! The atmosphere, the artsy vibe. You could easily lose time wandering this store. So many books, comfy places to sit and nice people working there. I especially loved the Quote of the Day container, where you take a quote from the Golden Apple of Discord. Also the Blind Date with a Booksection, in which there are gift wrapped books for 1.00 that you choose by the decription written on the wrapper. A really friendly girl works there ( I forgot to ask her name.) but we talked about our music. Will definitely come back, often.
Im usually a big fan of used book stores, but I wasnt a fan of this one. Its obvious why its going out if business. The location isnt the safest or nicest area of Dallas. Parking is metered (quarters or pay with app). The store isnt air conditioned. Even with some box & oscillating fans, the place was unbearable in the Texas heat. It was 87 outside, and it was over 95 inside the store. If the selection and organization of the store had been better, I would have overlooked these inconveniences. Unfortunately, despite signs to the contrary, none of the sections I searched were in alphabetical order by author. I found books filed in the wrong sections throughout the store, so Im sure that I missed out on interesting books I would have purchased because they were mis-shelved. With the heat and lack of organization, we didnt stay long enough to take advantage of the $1 each sale when you buy 10+ items.
I needed a specific book and they searched all locations just to find it. And they are so accommodating during the social distancing order we have in the city and offer curb side pickup and pay. Definitely recommend.
Im so happy I decided to check out lucky dogs, its a pleasantly quaint little spot with a lot to offer. Half Price has definitely taken over the thrift bookstore market so cool gems like this are far and few between. Their foreign language section is awesome! One of the best Ive seen. I definitely wanna come back.
A fun and funky collection. Great prices, and very well organized for a used bookstore. AC was off while I was there, so I would suggest early morning visits or bringing an iced thermos. Got around 40 books and magazines at their $10/10 promotion.
Very clean and organized. I love how they had a map of the books on a post. Such a cool place to find old books!
This place is Amazing. My first time going there last week and I didnt want to leave. They have an amazing selection of books, the the price is great and the staff is nice. I will definitely come back again to purchase more books.
I love this book store! Paper backs are just $1 so Im able to get the books I need to complete my collections. Only problem is there is no a/c just stand fans.
Not many stores like this exist. Its like a Half Price books, a huge selection of all kinds of used books. Only its better, with a local/family owned feel. Love this place!
Large used bookstore. They renegotiated the lease with a new owner and are open until the developers come along wanting to tear it down. I could spend hours looking through the used books. The only downside is no air conditioning.
Lucky Dog Books is a used bookstore with prices no more than $3 for any book inside. Its in an older building in Oak Cliff along Jefferson Avenue. Its clearly old, but its a classic. There are thousands of books inside as well as DVDs, poetry, etc. There are areas to sit and enjoy a book, coffee for purchase in the corner, and even a chess set if you dare to challenge someone.
Cool, little place, I would definitely go again. Not far from my house and since I love books, its very convenient. Staff pretty much leaves you alone unless you have questions. I like it a lot.
Great bookstore!!!!They are really nice.Has alot of books to choose from and great price.
The AC wasnt working when we went and it was over 100 degrees outside. Other than the fact I couldnt stay there very long for that reason, this is a magical little place. I could easily get lost here for hours...as long as Im cool!
I am an amazon fan, but if i need something right away, or want to explore a bit this is an amazing shop. They have a great section on books specific to Dallas. Great cards and postcards and things of that sort.
Love this place, like a treasure hunt, you can find some really cool things. Not your typical HalfPriceBooks, but why compare book stores, Its a book store! Cant wait to visit their new location soon!
Recently, I browsed throughout Lucky Dog on several occasions and different times of day to get the full experience of the place. This multi-level warehouse feels homely rather than cavernous while offering a diverse selection of books. In addition, they have vinyls, cassettes, VHS tapes, DVDs, vintage yearbooks, and more, all neatly displayed. The coffee aroma wafted down from the second level to greet me at the door before I mingled with the smell of pages being turned. Surprisingly, there was minimal dust on the shelves or the books themselves, something I would not have expected in such a large bookstore. The layout of the book cases themselves beckoned for browsers, although the small signs indicating each section seemed to deserve more effort. Even though I visited three times before finally making a purchase, each employee I talked to was friendly and helpful. The prices are reasonable and explained on their web page, which is up-to date and as helpful as the employees. As I was paying I learned that they also take in books for store credit, accept canned food donations, accept pet food donations for the shelter, and hold several events every week. I also discovered that they are no longer open on Mondays, which was disappointing because it is one of the few places around which was open 7 days a week.Support a local business by picking up a used book at Lucky Dog in Bishop Arts District, or join their mailing list to receive emails about events.
Great place. Love the selection. I could get lost in here for days. And the fact that every book is $3 or less is icing on the cake.
Great place. Huge selection well arranged. Unbeatable prices!
The books are inexpensive because theyre older. Now if you want for an older edition of a book for research, dont overlook this place. There are titles here that are out of print. Dig in!
I liked it a lot. It was quiet and spacious enough to just sit and read. The selection of books are huge. And they have a bunch of vinyl and vhs tapes which are harder to find. Will admit they dont have a lot of new books but it was filled with ones I loved from my childhood.
Huge, great selection of books! We got 3 books for less than $6. Staff is friendly! The shop has lots of places to sit and read. We will be back!
Happened to walk in during a reading. Very nice store and variety. Love the arts annex next door with great photography books and cmics. Hope to come back soon.
Great shop with an amazing sale in December where everything is $3. I picked up a couple coffee table books. Will be back soon.
A variety of books with some great deals and hidden treasures. Snack and drinks, lots of places to sit, read, play games. Very cute logo!
There are so many books on top of books here. You could easily get lost in books here. This space is massive. It definitely feels vintage. The Wifi is very iffy though.
Great used bookstore. Big variety of books, may not have the one you came in for, but youll probably leave with something else. I found the staff friendly and helpful.
Great selection of used books. Some teas and coffee. Great location. Parking limited to street front but worth a short walk.
$3 used books! Great neighborhood bookstore and trove of used books. Its easy to spend an hour or more in here.
Always welcoming. Wide selection of books, music, audiobooks, etc. Allowed us to use space to hold meet-ups at their previous location. With our youth reading less and less, it is important that there is community support of establishments like Lucky Dogs.
Guy working there was not very friendly
Love the atmosphere and staff. It was our first time there and we will definitely be back!
Casually walked by with girlfriend. Went in to look around. Did not know it was every book under $3. Look forward to going back and give an updated rating
Best used book store. Dont support the big used book companies, help the smaller independent ones. The new location is great. Go see a classic movie at the Texas theater and then go shop for some books.
Wondeful and eclectic indie used book store. Its my favourite in Dallas
One of the best bookstores in dfw! Such a great place to get lost. Support local independent businesses!
Tons of used and old books! But no AC makes it hard to stay for long on a hot summer day.
One of my favorite stops among Dallas bookstores. Large selection of books out of print. Excellent meeting place, poetry especially.
Nice place to visit. Plenty of books to choose from. They even have magazines, DVDs, and CDs here. You can even by snacks or drinks here while you look around or sit down to read a little.
This is the go-to local book store in Oak Cliff. They have a decent selection of photo books (I found two Magnum photographer books and one of Afghanistan coverage). Support your local shops!!
Cool space, going out of business unfortunately, no AC, so the shopping experience was like walking through a furnace. Books organized fairly well
Awesome deals in books and good selection. Only downside like others said its no AC
Tried to go in and support my lcoal small book store, and was stopped at the door by the old drunk guy with a white beard. He said they were getting ready to close at 9 pm. It was 8:50 when I was walking in, only because there were two people sitting on the couches and others still walking around the store. I asked him do you have a dictionary, I could buy he replied by saying they were getting ready to close. Wow, how rude!! Refused a sale!!! First and Last time, I will go there!!! Good thing, I left my box of books to donate in the car!!
Very unique used book store. Enjoyed perusing the many stacks of books.
Its ok .books are cheap. Not a big variety and theres no AC i couldnt spend much time looking around because it was so hot. Probably wouldnt go again
Great rare finds with a very large collection of gems. I recently found quite a large collection of gardening books on sale and I nearly bought them all.
A great place to spend hours browsing among an eclectic collection of used books - you never know what you will find.
Great selection of books. Buy 10 or more and they are only $1 each.
All the feels of Half Priced Books, without the big corporation feel.Very personable patrons and a most relaxing atmosphere!
Good selection of books at a resonable price.
Visited this place once and Never returned. The person at front desk was not very helpful and a little rude.
Great prices. Bring your read materials for credit towards purchase.
I always find a good read here.
Good little mom and pop bookstore with lots of older and out of print books at good prices!
Great place for secondhand books, comics, and reading rooms. Wide selection.
Nice place just wish they had a bigger selection of books.
Well I came here because someone told me about this place. The place is okay but some of the stuff is way over priced, dont get me wrong, you can definitely find some at a good price but its like finding the jewel in a haystack.
Prices cant be beat! Lots of variety. Wonderful little treasures!
Great used book store with a big selection and low prices
Good prices. Can spend a whole day there, but its extremely hot in there.
A lot of obscure books and CDs. A great find.
Huge! Very organized and love the strategically placed comfy chairs throughout the store.
Nice selection of books
Books for $3 or less they have comic books or $1. vintage art catalogs and old records or you can lounge around drink coffee or green tea.
Musty, old style used bookstore bookstore, like Cliffs (now closed) in Pasadena CA. If youre looking for it - it just might be there. 10 books for 10$
Very friendly & I love their variety selections
Great place lots of good selections thought the employees could have been a little more friendly and smile and help customers find things a little better besides that it was a good experience
Love this book store!
There I a selection of different books such as history, science, kid books, young adult and adult books, and creative books.
I went here a few weeks ago and bought 3 books for 11 Bucks! I think the prices are way over satisfactory and I really enjoy my visit!
It is going out of business, by (maybe) the end of October. Its mostly older books, movies, and games from like early 2000s and before then.Everything is $3 bit if you buy over 10 books then they are $1 each.
Love this place! I often find sheet music for a great price.
Awesome book selection and all around good place to buy b00ks
Great lil book store needs more stock though
I like it . Good prices and a lot to choose from .
Great selection and friendly staff.
Lots of books. Great pricing.
