1st time here. 5/31/21. Amazing Grace coffee & Bakery. I saw 2 entrances here, one from the outside, and one from inside dewitt-seitz building, both involve stairs. So I dont know if its handicap accessible? I dont know if there is an elevator that goes down to the basement.* my coffee was about $3, my muffin was $3.50, I think a cookie was $2.30? Blueberry rhubarb muffin intrigued me. I just needed a little snack to get me going.* if you are a heavy creamer user, Make sure to literally show them with your fingers how much of the coffee cup you need to be empty, to add creamer. My husband said please make sure to leave enough room for creamer and they left like a quarter of an inch...* I took a picture of the trash can, because there is only one small hole for only one style of coffee cup, which is the strangest thing to me. They sell takeaway containers that would never fit in that garbage can so you would have to lift up the top to put your garbage in there.. that seems gross.
Wed talked about going to this place for years ever since we started regularly vacationing in Duluth. We finally went this morning and it was great food. The oat milk coffee was delicious and I also appreciated how good a simple side of eggs and toast were - I judge a diner based on how good their basics are. Additionally, nearly all of the food containers were compostable, which is a neat bonus IMO. Yay Sustainability!
Nice place with dog-friendly outdoor patio. We stopped here on 4/19 during a quick day trip to Duluth (after Grandmas Saloon notified us that their patio seating was not open yet [at 3pm] and they suggested we go elsewhere with the dog). The prices here seemed reasonable considering everything is fresh. Lots of folks were here ordering beer and coffee drinks. For ~$38 we had lunch for two (burgers with sides), a water, glass of milk ($2) and two huge ginger (gingersnap) cookies ($1.75 ea but they were huge & really good). We could have split a cookie and burger and that would have been plenty (now we know for next time).Their pickles are like a mix of bread & butter with a hint of dill. The plate (in picture next to mine) had a cheeseburger w/ pickle and side of fresh fruit (cluster of grapes, half of an orange and half of a banana). One thing is I wish the staff told you protocol with dishes when they brought the plates out. I stood in line for a few minutes, after we finished our lunch, waiting to ask if we leave the dishes on the table or if we bring them in and put them somewhere. Not a huge inconvenience but something to suggest for future reference!
It was my first time here and I went with high expectations based on the reviews. It is a really cute location with outside seating available. The food was fine but there was something missing in the flavor. I dont think it was a great value for the price either. They also made a substitution to our sandwich without letting us know ahead of time. I understand that sometimes you may not have all the ingredients but not letting your customer know ahead of time is not ok due to a variety of reasons I wont get into here. The coffee was good and fairly priced and the fruit smoothie was tasty too.Their timing was accurate even with being understaffed and a long line of customers.
Great location and the food is delicious! 😋 I love the new look and feel. I’ll definitely be going back!!
Fantastic sandwiches, I had the Turkey Bacon Brie and all the flavours just worked together. The atmosphere is a basement based dining area, with low light and free seating. Overall, a very good lunch area. 4 stars only because the ordering counter conflicts with the flow of customers trying to get through. Recommend checking it out for great local food!
No longer a breakfast place during the week. There was a line promptly at the door 9am and only one employee. It’s clear the owners have slimmed down and no longer supports the community it advertises it does. There’s no sense of community when you walk in the door. Only dystopian greed by the owners.
Today a female staff member told me lattes dont need to have froth or foam when I questioned whether the drink on the counter was mine due to the appearance of the hot beverage . Although that information may be true, the latte that I received was flat tasting and not up to the usual very good standards of this cute little cafe that I frequent. Maybe next time simply ask the customer if there is anything you can do to make it right? Years of customer service experience and management experience have taught me that sometimes informing or instructing your customers is not very helpful. This little cafe has brought me joy over the last 4 years of visiting and I will certainly come back, hopefully to drink a better quality latte in the future.
Years ago I loved Amazing Grace. It was the perfect place to pick up a fabulous chai and a moist and flavorful muffin or sit down for a hardy breakfast. But they seemed to be slipping over time, so I hadnt been back now for a long time. Stopped by this morning for a muffin and chai, figuring it was time to give them a another chance. They used to have one of the best chai lattes anywhere, but all I could taste in this one was ginger. Ick. And both of the muffins we ordered were stale. I realize they were closed yesterday, but if they didnt have time to make fresh baked goods for today, they shouldnt be charging full price for them!Theyve also taken out about half the space to sell grocery items. (Seems an odd choice, but whatever.) But this means the only indoor tables are crammed together in a tiny corner with no airflow - not where you want to be if you are at all concerned about COVID.This is still one of the best places for breakfast along Canal Park, but thats not saying much since there really arent a lot of other options - especially early in the morning. Its not horrible, but certainly not up to its reputation from the past.
I had one of their breakfast bowls and it was excellent. Some of the better hash browns Ive ever had, in fact. My companions also got food and coffee and everyone was very happy with their orders. Would definitely go back.
Awesome food and great coffee! Gotta get past the wait staff, though. Ive been in here multiple times over the past few years, and the waitresses always seem like its a super huge imposition to take you. Im not exaggerating when I say that today I saw a Rock, Paper, Scissors battle to see who would take my girlfriend and I. Seriously? Just understand that youre bothering the waitresses by setting foot in here, and youll love what the cooks and baristas whip up.
Awesome eating outside in Duluth by the lake and the service and food were worth the drive from Grand Rapids! Our waitress was very festive with her red, white, blue star and strips bib overalls!
Food is only being served on the weekends. Great looking muffins. The blueberry rhubarb was good. Latte was good. Internet was down.Update: As of 5/26 still no internet. Latte and cookie good though 😁
What used to be a legendary local music venue / cafe is now just a lame grocery store that caters to tourists..... Chip must be rolling in his grave.
We always want to like this place, and it always disappoints, unfortunately. Its very cute and in a great location. However, service is always slow and food is just ok. There are better places in the area, so we tend to avoid now.
Came here a couple weekends ago with my sister and I have to say the Chai Latte I got was the best one I’ve ever had.
Delicious. We chose it based on another review that said great coffee. Pretty risky to follow a strangers recommendation regarding coffee, but it was worth it. Good coffee, friendly wait staff, we had been warned its slightly slow but just because every single thing is made from scratch. Didnt really seem extra slow though. Oatmeal pancake are tasty and the local syrup is amazing. The pic is the bangers and hash
Best breakfast burrito I ever had! Location has a really laid back and cool vibe - even though it was extremely busy. Service met our standards as well.
A happy vibe here with delicious cookies and great service!
Just not what it used to beCovid wrecked alot of stuff!
Amazing Grace Bakery needs no introduction. The food was amazing, absolutely phenomenal. The atmosphere was alive. The live music was am excellent selection. The service was really quite good despite the business, and I mean busy. It was supposed to be a 45 minute wait for 2, but we were seated in 5 minutes luckily. Had we not been, we may have missed out on the best breakfast ever. The quality of ingredients is amazing. The menu is diverse and full of surprises. I cant wait to come back. One damper was the hostess. Clearly a slammed Sunday morning, she was a little sarcastic and I hate my job for my taste, but we forgot about her shortly after being seated.
Ate on deck in 84 degree weather in Duluth, MN on the 4th. Awesome America and great food, service etc. Met other Happy in person customers!
Sad to see the reading nooks turn into a food store, but happy the coffee and especially the espresso are still very strong!! Missing the bakery and fish tank~ 🐠🍪🥐
If you love crispy hashbrowns, theirs are the crispiest! Great baked goods too.
I have been here about a dozen times and the food is fine for small town Minnesota. Its calories. The service is abysmal however. Each time I come in I tell myself I wont come in again because of the uncongenial staff. Yet months go by, and lack of restaurant options in the area coax me back in. I just left furious after requesting hot sauce be put on my breakfast, and the counter attendent told me there are ketchup, mayonaise, and mustard packets available. I just paid 12 dollars for a mediocre hash, and despite there being numerous bottles os Sriacha and Cholula in their store area for sale, I assume at least an open bottle of each in their kitchen, she couldnt figure out how to offer basic food service. This sort of thing happened before COVID-19 changes at Amazing Grace for the past 3 years Ive been there, and management clearly has developed no further skills in creating a customer friendly atmosphere. If management responds, I bet theyll say Thank you for letting us know. We are sorry to hear about that and hope to see you again. If you read reviews on service, I am only one of many, many people saying the same thing. I want a refund, and this time I am done.
Not impressed with the new look. Limited seating. Very expensive.
This is a small quaint, rustic below street level coffee bar and grocery. Due to Covid there was no indoor seating but outdoor seating was available for nicer weather days.
Had a great experience at this cozy coffee shop!
I’m not sure what the reviews of poor service are about; the staff was friendly and kind when we were there, and the chai lattes were tasty!Definitely worth a stop; only disappointment is that they had cheese and no crackers!
Nice selection of brands and products. And fresh baked goods. Worth a stop.
Failed me for breakfast 3 visits in a row.
I recently had the opportunity to work with the owner on their reopening plan. They were a delight to work with. I applaud AGBC on their creativity and adaptability during the pandemic! I look forward to enjoying and supporting the new version of AGBC soon!
Was pleasantly surprised by this place. Cool underground vibe. The servers did a great job balancing all the tables by themselves, especially since there was only 1 behind the counter and 1 on tables. Coffee tasted amazing! I don’t know what kind it was but I need more of it. Food was made very well, a little bit towards the pricier side for breakfast. However, that’s the premium for good quality, locally sourced ingredients.
Bought a loaf of Superior Sourdough bread at the While Foods Co-op this week. This is the best bread I have ever eaten. Thank you!
The food and drinks were AMAZING. I wish I lived in Duluth so I could come here more often. 10/10 recommend the grace hash for breakfast
Called 3 times to see if they were serving breakfast, but they never answered. Looked on their website, and they assured that they were open and serving breakfast. I drove down to canal park, paid for parking, and walked up to the door to see they were not serving breakfast. This all could have been avoided if they’d just answer the phone.
The food is decent but the customer service needs work. I’ve gone during brunch, lunch, and dinner time and the employees generally always make me feel like I’m an inconvenience. I often go up to the counter and am not greeted at all. I would rather take my time and money elsewhere to one of the many other great establishments we have here in Duluth.I think it would benefit your business to train your employees on the proper way to treat patrons.
I enjoyed my breakfast a lot. The bacon with the classic was very very good. I would for sure come back for breakfast. The only thing i really didnt enjoy was the live music at 10am. Kinda wanted a quiet breakfast and not have to talk so loud for the others at the table to hear me. The guy was a plenty good singer which made it a but more tolerable but its a small place so the sound adds up quick.
We had breakfast here this morning. The food was delicious and the staff was friendly. Only regret is not finding this place soon on our trip to Duluth. We will be back!
Killer breakfast burrito, great coffee and pastries too. Recently rebranded and remodeled and looks rad! Keep up the great work
Poor service. Husbands burrito was mediocre. Meat breakfast sandwich was okay. Definitely overpriced! We provided a tip and they couldnt even bring our food out to us. Nice seating area outdoors, but not enough tables for people out.
Best bread & people in town ♥️
Amazing staff still but not a fan of the remodel...its lost its rustic charm and the space is all wrong for live music now :(
Interesting little Cafe in the basement of the DeWitt Seitz building!
Went there for coffee yesterday and breakfast today. We received great service and we will be back!
Went on a Sunday morning. When we came in, the waitresses had fairly long conversation about whose turn it was to sit someone down. Not a good start, they werent organized and it wasnt even busy. After we sat and ordered, there was a long wait for food. Especially considering it was breakfast food, which cooks quickly. Once it did come, it was very good though. Price is on the high side, but the menu said they are supporting local farmers. Maybe that explains the premium. I would go back, but not if I was in a hurry.
Had an amazing experience eating breakfast on the patio. The food and service are top notch. They offered a cup of coffee to go and they even make their own sausage patties. We will be back for sure.
Nice little place, a bit of a hipster vibe. The omelet was outstanding, with homemade sausage. Good coffee. The only thing I didnt like was the music. Some lady playing a dulcimer, only reason I didnt give 5 stars.
The food, the music, the coffee, the ambience. Everything falls into place when visiting Amazing Grace Bakery and Cafe.Mostly writing this because I want to be on there napkin holders. But still go there! It’s great!
Great breakfast. Huge portions. Reasonable prices. The French toast was the best option. As the other reviews mentioned, the food was a bit slow to come out, but other than that it was a nice spot.
Great food, pretty good coffee. The only issues with Amazing Grace are that they always seem overwhelmed and wait times are very long.I think they must have changed management recently, because in the past they’ve been incredibly understaffed. More recently, this seems like it has improved. My friend and I once waited 2 hours for lunch here. That was extreme, but even now, wait times are fairly long— though it’s possible this is due to tourist season.Good vegetarian and vegan options. Their walnut burger is incredible.I like to come here to work on stuff during the winter months when it’s less busy. Too busy in the summer for that. All in all, this is a good restaurant, but too hectic during busiest times to be enjoyable.
I cant comment on the food because we didnt get that far. We came in the back way and the host told us we looked lost. We told her we would like to eat here and she said see the sign over there that says wait for host? Thats where you should go wait so we went there and there was another couple standing there waiting so we stood next to them. Guy behind the counter asks us if we are waiting for breakfast. We are. He says then we need to stand behind the sign (two feet from where we are standing). Another couple walks in the door and counter guy yells out to our growing group to not stand in front of the counter if we are here for breakfast. The newest members were not impressed with the greeting and left. We looked around and host was no where to be seen so we decided to call it too. Amazing Grace needs someone to train their staff on warm hospitality service.
The dark chocolate mocha with oat milk and the blueberry rhubarb muffin I got were amazing! Only not amazing part was the customer service..I felt as though I was an inconvenience and rushed through my first experience in the cafe. Ill be going back to try again maybe on a different day at a different time to see if it was just this particular circumstance. Overall 9/10 experience.
Out of pancakes? Really? On a Friday morning? Pancakes, really? A breakfast joint? Really!! First comment hardly audible from waitress was not good morning or hi, how are you but Hey, I want to let you know the wait for food is about 1/2 hour. In a half empty restaurant?? Really disappointing experience on our exit morning from Duluth. We did not stay. I paid for my $3 coffee, cancelled our order and left.
Quirky decor with bent sticks, chalk, and real houseplants. The first time we stopped we were in a hurry and they told us they were not particularly fast so we skipped it. Came back the next day for breakfast. One of those omg did I really eat that much situations where you have to cancel your plans and go back to the hotel for a nap. Transcendent hash browns with the omelette. The Grace Hash was likewise awesome. Despite the business name they didn’t try to minister to us or hand out religious pamphlets. In fact they seemed like liberals. Just a hint of herby flavor in the hash browns...I know it sounds wrong but no, it works. Four point three stars.
Went on a Tuesday morning. 5 tables with 2-3 people. Waited way too long for anyone to get a menu...two people working, one washing up tables and window ledges and oblivious to me. (I walked to the counter to get a menu) Waited more at the table. Walked to the counter to ask if I could order. Waitperson: Ill be right there. Ordered. Declined the toast. Didnt ask if I would like coffee so I followed her up to the counter and asked. Coffee, water, cream came after a bit. Waited for breakfast for 30 minutes. It came with toast which I took home and didnt waste it. Something has to change if this is the unenthusiastic way that staff greets customers. Disappointing except for the food which was excellent.
Amazing grace provided coffee for our wedding on 10/21/2017 and it was amazing! They were great with communication and easy to work with! The coffee was great and they provided an assortment of flavors! They even surprised us and provided two hand made coffee mugs which we will use forever! Definitely recommend them for any event! Thank you!
I want to apologize i did review the wrong restaurant. Sorry for the inconvenience & thank you for bringing it to my attention.
Ate here four separate times and all were good experiences. They have good muffins too if you want to stop in for something quick and go. Breakfast burritos with sausage are wonderful.
1st time I had been there in quite awhile was about 3 weeks ago. Our server Rachel let us know breakfast would be at least 40 min wait, stating they had only 1 cook and a small grill. We opted for muffins and coffee. Rachel was great and kept our mugs full. Went for breakfast 2 weeks later, same experience...1 cook and small grill, long wait time. I had the time to wait and food was very tasty and again coffee service was great while waiting. Sadly there were empty tables that would have been occupied IF the wait time wasnt so long as I watched people leave due to wait times. I hope owners can rectify the situation. I am giving 3 stars due to long wait times due to lack of kitchen staff both times I was there. In the past if wait times were long it was because all the tables were FULL.
Loved our breakfast! Absolutely everything was perfect: coffee, pancakes, Benny, and the service! Our waitress was incredible! Well be making another stop here when we visit again!
Wonderful coffee shop and cafe tucked away in an eclectic atmosphere. Homemade soups and sandwiches, always taste great. Not everyone knows its down there in the basement of the building, but it can still get busy at noon. We go there for lunch every time we visit Canal Park.
The food is delicious!
Came on a Monday morning. They didnt know it was our wedding anniversary but they put us in this perfect little corner spot private but not blocked off from looking around. Locals were playing theyre guitars which gave a really comfortable vibe to chill eat and have a guitar going. The food was good. This is my first time in Duluth and plan to bring my kids back sometime. We will definitely visit again!
We stop for coffee at Amazing Grace every time were in Canal Park which is several times a year. Never again. Very rude employees who apparently think its funny to be rude to customers. Not sure how much longer theyll survive if something doesnt change.
I had high hopes for the nice location, but they need to rework their strategy for organization, leadership, and staffing. Fairly quick seating, for one person, Monday late morning. However...1. 15 minutes for water,2. 15 more minutes to make an order,3. 50 more minutes before I asked where my food was at (food was cold, like it had been sitting for a while), and4. 20 more minutes to take my check.Total time spent here, over an hour and a half for an omelet with toast. Mediocre food that is rather overpriced. Wait staff never came until I asked. I hate leaving bad reviews, but they disappointed me.
Amazing Grace has always been my favorite place in Canal Park. Its a great study spot, and I love that its located in the basement of the De-Witt Seitz Building because it creates such a cool and comfortable environment. Their coffee is amazing, their soups and sandwiches are great options for lunch, and their breakfast/brunch is delicious. If you plan on going there for breakfast, expect to be put on a wait list, but I promise you the wait is worth it. Highly recommend stopping in if youre looking for a good place to get coffee in Canal Park, or spend a few hours there studying!
We came to Duluth on our mini-moon to get away from the cities. Amazing Grace Bakery was our first stop. Amazing atmosphere, huge cups of coffee and fantastic food! Can’t wait to go back!
Stopped here for breakfast before heading home. Was warned quietly it was going to be a 30 minute wait because they only have 1 cook. We ordered anyway. Was told quietly they were out of pancakes and they couldn’t make more. We were not impressed and left.
This is a fantastic place to visit. Great coffee and wonderful (locally sourced) food. Friendly staff and a fun decor make this a must stop, for me and my family.
I’ll tell you what! My breakfast at the Amazing Grace was fantastic. I like the atmosphere here. The music was pretty cool, wasn’t expecting to be serenaded during my meal...nice touch. I don’t know who made my French toast breakfast meal but I want to hug his or her mama.
Cute little place, food was good and came out quick. Price was appropriate for the food. I would return and recommend.
Worth the wait! Live music for breakfast! Who does that? It was awesome! Best Benny and pancakes weve had... anywhere. Cant wait to come back.
I have always liked this place. Workers are not your run of the mill but hey that makes the experience interesting. Love the vegetarian options, and the chocolate cherry muffins are really excellent. A good place for coffee for sure.
Anytime Im up in Duluth I always make this my first stop..... Amazing Grace is a unique bakery & cafe located in the basement of Marketplace which is a mom and pap shop mini mall with a few stores. The only thing I ever get at this cafe and bakery is the soup or pastries..... Their soup is to die for and fairly reasonable for price.... This cafe has a lovely atmosphere and a great place to converse, meet up with friends, study, or a place to stop for a quick delicious bite to eat which isnt commercialized
New menu, same great breakfast options. Hearty portions, fresh food. Great coffee. Excellent, personable service from Lizzy, too. This place is a weekend ritual.
The food was ok. Not great but not bad. My food was cold and my wifes was hot so the kitchen had poor timing. It took 45 minutes to get our breakfast. This all may have been just that everyone there showed up at the same time but not sure. The music was good
Such a great hole in the wall cafe! Food was great, server was so nice, atmosphere was great and the live music was cool as well. Will come back when Im in town for sure!
Though Im partial to their delicious breakfast items, you really cant go wrong with anything on the menu. From the freshly baked goods to the omelettes to the handcrafted sandwiches, its all fantastic. The environment is friendly and cozy -- perfect for meeting up with people or getting a bit of work done. (The North Woods Ben is so, so delicious. Make sure to get some toast, too, so you can try the jam!!)
Service was extremely slow. We were seated at an open table immediately, then waited 10-15 minutes for the waitress to come talk to us. I got my coffee quickly, the waitress forgot my wifes water for 10 minutes. We placed our order. Another 10 minutes passed when the waitress came up to ask us if we were ready to order, so we had to remind her we had already done so.Approximately 30 minutes passed between ordering and receiving our food, which was 1 pancake and 2 scrambled eggs. The pancake was not cooked all the way through. The coffee tasted good and the eggs were fine. The waitress never stopped by to see if we needed anything. We had to go up to the counter to request our bill. Another waitress had just arrived and took our money. She gave us back $6.75 in change instead of $5.62. All in all, it was by far the worst food experience we had all weekend in Duluth.
Terrible service. After we waited an hour for our food and watched several other people receive their food our server finally came out to tell us our food would be out soon. Another twenty minutes went by before we just left. The coffee was tasty though! The place has a great atmosphere but the staff seems lost. Good luck folks!
We had a great coffee experience this weekend!
Great little shop to sit down and get away from the meyhem of Canal Park. Ive been popping in here for almost twenty years. They make better coffee than Caribou, and they have better pastries as well. Its pretty small, though, and service isnt really able to keep up with large crowds.
Loved the local food, no upcharge for Gluten Free, and simple, but good options. I think they might have had a staffing issue, because it took a while to get our order and food. However, the staff member there was friendly and helpful. Food was fantastic tasting, and worth the wait.
This is my new favorite spot. I got the sauteed veg rolled omelette. The food is absolutely delicious, great coffee, and the service is amazing. Ill be back for sure! Thank you so much for a beautiful morning on the patio.
Breakfast is absolutely the best! I also love to just stop by and get myself a Iced Mocha latte (so good). Also, I just love when they have a live performance playing. Probably my favorite place in Duluth!
Had a great breakfast! Omelets were fantastic! Huge portions, fast service...bread and jam were amazing! We had the gyro omelet and meat omelets...would order again!Elizabeth was a great waitress...prompt and friendly service.
Great little cafe in the heart of canal park.
Great coffee.
