Delicious mac nut ice cream in our shave ice and very nice staff! Was perfect!

Definitely the best shaved ice in Maui. The syrups are homemade and very fresh tasting. The coconut icecream topped with any of the shaved ice flavors is amazing. The portions are large.

This was my favorite shave ice in kihei. Fine, but not too fine, shave. (Ululanis & Beach Street are finer, but I prefer a tiny bit of texture.) the syrups were nice & strong & they give you enough. We found it at the end of our trip & then didnt go anywhere else.

Went because supposedly there are natural flavors. First they didnt know what flavors were natural or not, I had to get my phone and bring the just out and was told the websites list of natural flavors is wrong and only natural is lemonade? Got a coconut ice cream instead, wasnt frozen right and tasted like creamy slop. Would avoid this place if you want natural flavors or decent coconut ice cream. (Didnt try the regular). I ended up throwing the ice cream away. Waste of $7

The shave ice and ice cream are AMAZING. My wife and I visited this shop after a day at the beach and were delightfully treated to shave ice (with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the bottom) and a root beer float made with Maui Brewing Company Root Beer (non-alcoholic) and vanilla ice cream. The ingredients were made with cane sugar and made locally. The gentleman working was also very friendly and did a great job on serving the shave ice by poking holes after scooping as well as drizzling a good amount of syrup to ensure it soaked through to the bottom. The root beer was VERY good. Great place for a cold treat.

The Best shave ice in Maui hands down! Syrups are all homemade ! All of their specials are amazing! My favorite is the Tropical Heaven (Passion Fruit, Mango & Guava) or the Maui Sunset (Strawberry, Blue Raspberry & Pineapple !

They have a bunch of vegan coconut flavors. The lilikoi and coffee were both really good. Not overly sweet like some places.We didnt have shave ice but they had a lot of flavors that didnt have any artificial Colors or does added.Great stop for desert

Got jipped on the amount of shaved ice in my cup but it was good. I recon getting a large because a lot of it falls off before serving.

Good service, good flavors. More expensive than the big shaved ice chain on the island. Small ($6), large ($8). But NO LINES and plentiful PARKING (lot). Located next to Foodland grocery store.

I loooove this place. I’ve been to all the locations and personally, I think the one in Kihei is best, but they’re all AMAZING. Surfing Monkey does shave ice right. Never too overloaded with syrup, the fine shave ice is the perfect texture, and their flavor options are expansive and delicious. And the li hing mui powder is free and SO GOOD. Make sure you at least try it!

We are visiting over Christmas 2020, and stopped in after a very hot day on the lava fields in Makena. The owner was great to talk to and we enjoyed the ice cream and root beer float a lot. The mango ice cream was excellent. Stop in and keep a long time locally owned shop in business.

Ice cream quality is great, such a cute lil shop. Loved the choices they even have Vegan ice cream.Paul was very nice!

Their shaved iced was ok. The real winner here is their gelato. Their coconut gelato is worth coming here for. It’s super flavorful and has the perfect coconut taste.

I would really rather give two stars...but the ice cream they use is delicious ( rose Lani) ....This is not Hawaii shave ice....by far the worst ice consistency I have had. Compared to some other local shaved ice joints, this place didnt compare. The ice we got kept falling because its crushed versus shaved into long strands, so it made it difficult to eat. The syrups were very sticky but not flavourful. Ice cream was an additional charge, and the price isnt as competitive as other places.

Most of the time shave ice is just a dessert. At Surfing Monkey it was an experience just to watch the preparation. It was like watching an artisan at work. Dont forget to add Ice cream, youre missing out on the shave ice experience if you skip the juxtaposition between cream and ice

A great way to cool off and great variety of flavors. We had a great experience (3 visits during 1 vacation). Friendly staff who chat with you and engage with the kids as they ponder which flavor combos to try. Make sure to get the scoop of ice cream nestled under the shave ice.

Absolutely positively love this company. Thoroughly enjoyable experience. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Always greeted when I walk up. Stores ate kept very neat and tidy, and the shave ice is amazing! Rarely ever do i eat shave ice, but when I do, its always here! The texture of the ice is soft and fluffy, making it a truly unique experience compared to other icy desserts. My personal favorite flavors are banana, blue vanilla (classic, traditional flavors), cotton candy, tastes like the real THING, passion fruit, vibrant with flavor, and mango, tastes like a delicious gummy bear. Highly recommend surfing monkey. Must try or youre MISSING OUT!

Hands down the best shave ice in the whole Maui! The owner is very friendly. If you cant decide what to pick they have lots of samples (shave ice and ice cream samples). The store is very clean and has cool decorations making it very Hawaiian themed. The shave ice is very good. The small shave ice is huge! The ice cream is delicious! You can choose from so many ice cream flavors as well as cone flavors. Are you vegan or lactose intolerant? No problem. They have lots of different coconut vegan ice cream flavors to choose from. Overall great experience at surfing monkey shave ice.

Best root beer floats on the island!

Great place to stop for a cold treat! We were traveling in a group and the vegan options were an added bonus. Liked it so much we went back a second time!

By far the best on the island that Ive tasted! The flavors are so bold and refreshing! The amount of shaved ice they give you is well worth the price as well!! Cant wait to come back again for more!

The actual best shaved ice place on the island! Willie like some of the other places this one really shines. The staff was fantastic and well most certainly be back on later trips.

How does this place have such good reviews? First, the man at the counter had no energy and barely said a word to us. The place was empty and that should have been a sign. Second, the shaved ice was over flowing the cup and made it really difficult to eat. Third, the shaved ice was more like brittle ice and was no soft to eat at all. Please don’t go here. Take a few minutes to go up the street to Ululani’s. It’s the best place in Maui.

My husband and I went here two days in a row while we were in Maui for our honeymoon! It was so, so good! You have the option of putting a scoop of ice cream in the bottom which makes it even better! The syrups are locally made. Additionally, the two ladies that were working, Katie and I believe the owner, were both genuinely kind and seemed to really enjoy being there. Its a must go!

Came here twice. First time the owner was there great guy, very friendly and the shaved ice was amazing. The second time a different lady was working and it wasnt the same the ice was so chopped it fell apart and fell all over the counter. ☹️

I really liked this place for shave ice. It comes close to the outstanding quality of Ululanis, which is a chain and has shops everywhere on the island. I would recommend that you give this place a try as well. The location is great -- next to Foodland and some good restaurants all within walking distance.The best feature of this place is the owner. He is super friendly and seems to take pride in offering the best quality ingredients while providing excellent service.

$4 for a small and they were big. I believe it was the owner that we met and she was super nice. The Shave Ice was the best we have had and we have tried many! She uses flavors with real cane sugar and you can tell the difference. Wish we tried this first so we could have been having the best from the start. We will be back!!

Vegan gelato and naturally flavored shave ice with all the toppings... What more could you ask for! They also have traditional ice cream and a wide range of traditional (artificial) syrups to cater to all customers. We will certainly return!

Went with a big group, nobody liked the shave ice, the ice was brittle, it wasnt packed well and there wasnt enough syrup, nowhere near ululanis, very disappointing. The gelato had mixed reviews, some of us loved it and some of us didnt like it. The service wasnt great, we went in 28 minutes before it closed and the guy obviously could not wait for us to get out of there and locked the doors as soon as we walked out, 6 minutes before 9:00

Our kids had their very first shaved ice here. The syrups made from all natural flavours and are delicious! It was a fun outing for our family and the server embodied the Aloha spirit!

We visited while on vacation last week. The young girl that worked the register was nice and a such sweetheart. Very happy with the service. A nice selection of flavors and competitively priced when compared to nearby stands.My only minor complaint is that she didnt put enough of the flavored syrup on our orders so it ended up being a little bland when compared to the others stands we tried (we had already driven away by the time we noticed, so we take some of the blame for not sampling our order first). I would still return as a customer though, Id just ask for extra syrup the next time :)

From start to finish our experience here was 1 star. We walked in and noticed that our shoes stuck to the floor. The one person working there hardly acknowledged us when we walked in and gave other customers a head nod and that was it. Then when i tried to pick up our snow cone from the counter after we paid, half of the snow cone spilled on the counter and he just watched us try to clean it up with the napkins available. Terrible customer service, the snow cone wasn’t even that good. We would never recommend this place unfortunately

I love the atmosphere of the Surfing Monkey Hawaiian Shave Ice the girls are friendly,place is very clean and the options on the menu boards are endless... if I had questions they tried to answer or let me sample their amazing products to make a clear choice in the selection of my sweet treat. The small shave ice is HUGE!!!! It comes with 3 flavors in any combination with 30 flavors to choose from. They also carry dairy and vegan ice cream that you can sample without guilt. Knowing you will have a perfect bite everytime.. .my maui experience was awesome my daughters and I will be back again.

Good shave ice. Flavors not too sweet and taste like what theyre supposed to be. Shopping center a little dingy, but the shave ice place has tables out front and keep their place neat. Their shave ice is the real kind - shaved off not crunched like some places.

The women behind the counter was having a full phone conversation with a “friend” through a Bluetooth earpiece throughout the entire time she was helping us. The shave ice was disappointing, lacking flavor, the ice cream she offered for the bottom was not fresh scooped but a frozen chunk she grabbed from a zip lock bag that never got soft enough to eat. Super big bummer!

The place across the street was super crowded so we came here. All natural syrups and it was yummy and no line! Highly recommend.

This is great shaved ice! I’ve had shaved ice from a couple places in Oahu and Kauai, and this is as good, if not better, than any of the places I went to. The owner was running the little shop at the Shops at Wailea and was a super friendly guy.

Great Shave Ice stand with fair prices, fair servings, and lots of syrup. I went here my first night, and when my craving hit again I went to try Local Boys as I had read such highly touted reviews. Even though toppings are included at local boys, the inflated prices to size ration ends up not working in its favour. I watched the girl at Local make the couple in front of me theirs and I decided to walk over to Surfing monkey as after seeing the sizes, and prices at locals I wasnt impressed.Catch the wave, and struggle to get this monkey off your back.

This was great shave ice. Worth the drive up from Makena Beach. Great friendly service, all the right flavours that you could want. $5 for a small that is others large. We split smalls and had plenty to go around. Would definitely come back.

I LOVE this place! It is only our third day here and we have been here twice!! So good! The small shaved ice is actually big and the large is huge! They have tons of flavors to choose from and you can add ice cream to the bottom. Sounded weird at first but I tried it the second time there and I loved it! They also offer rootbeer floats, cones and a variety of ice cream flavors- some made with coconut milk!! The place is very clean and bright!! Definatley would recommend this place and hope to go back!!

The place is clean. Lots of different flavors to choose from. The downfall was the unfriendly attitude from the lady serving. Felt like we were putting her out when deciding on flavors. Bummer!

Some if the best shave ice I have ever had. Ice cream on the bottom is a must and the 100% kona coffee flavor and Melina are uniquely amazing. And a buy 5 get one free card doesnt hurt either.

Yummy flavours, short line unlike Ululanis, and great service! Party of 6, including 2 little kids, were able to sit and enjoy.

Although the store is relatively clean and air conditioned, the shave ice was very mushy, melting quickly and lacking in flavor. It did not compare with the Maui favorite, Ululanis which has shave ice that can hold its own even at the outdoor tables in 85 degree heat. This place has the advantage of being open until 9:00 pm, so catches some of the post dinner crowd. All in all, an expensive bowl of crushed ice.

Mediocre compared to every other shave ice place in hawaii. It was poor quality shaved ice, not packed properly and short on syrup. It basically fell apart on our walk outside. No point in providing a straw really because there wasnt enough syrup. Go somewhere else even if the line is longer. Only positivenote: I felt hydrated after eating all the flavorless ice.
