CALLED TO GET A SPECIFIC SIZE OF AZEK TRIM BOARD...ACTUAL SIZE...DROVE ALL THE WAY THERE THEN LEARNED THEY DIDN T HAVE.IT WHEN WE GOT THERE AFTER HE ASSURED ME THEY HAD IT...NOT GOOD FRONT DESK SERVICE AT THE LANSING YARD!!

Got there at 2 to unload. Unloaded at 3:45. Basically forgot we were sitting there waiting so had to call two times to tell them we were still waiting to get unloaded. They were closing and about to leave and forgot we were there!! Another time took an hour to unload. One of the slower lumber places

Hugh G. Rection?... With a name like that, nobody is going to take your review seriously. Personally, Ive only had great experiences at Carter, and I recommend them very highly. Excellent products and a very knowledgeable staff that go out of their way to help. Some people may feel uncomfortable at lumber yards because they feel pressured to know things, or to act like they know things. Well at Carter they treat you with respect, and if you dont have a clue with things such as measurements on your project for example, dont be afraid to ask what you might think are stupid or humiliating questions. They will literally go out of their way to help you, and if the person you are talking to cant help, they will get someone who can very quickly. I was personally amazed at the knowledge of the staff at Carter and for that they get 5 stars....This is no Big Box store where the staff has absolutely no clue. I was once at that orange colored big box store I asked a lumber associate where the 4x6x8 treated are located and he had no clue what I was talking about. How do you work in a lumber dept and not know what a 4x6 is?!? The men and women at Carter know their stuff and you can pretty much throw anything at them and they will know whats up. Prices are sometimes a tad on the high side, but you get what you pay for and so no complaints on that.. Oh and nobody is yelling.

Good straight lumber, studs were pretty much perfect. I saved nearly $2/per piece buying local rather than dealing with Home Depot or Lowe’s. Definitely will be returning for the rest of my projects.

IMO, rude employees and rude managers as well who make excuses for the rude employees. The theme of this review: Rude. MPC Cashway on Old Grand River treats me like a king. MPC Cashway has a review rating of 4.7 too. PS: I wonder whether the 5 star Google reviews for this location were made by employees, family, or friends.

Had a very good experience with a garage project. Worked with Tim Cockroft, who was very helpful throughout the process. Quality materials and service.Very likely will be using Carter again for an upcoming deck project.

From the start, the person responsible for getting my lumber was yelling at me, nasty and belligerent. Then I told him the counter guy said I could pick out my own lumber and he got even more irate and yelled who said you could and walked over to the lumber building and called the desk. Then the same guy screamed at me from the lumber building Come ON! I told him he had poor customer skills and I could get a refund and go somewhere else if he wanted, and he yelled GO AHEAD! and screamed to follow him inside. Someone went to get the mgr who just made things worse. The mgr. continued to glare at me, so, I know he didnt care about me no matter what words came out of his mouth. Seemed like everyone there had an attitude of some kind. So-- If you like to be abused for spending your hard earned cash-- this is the place to go--! It was worse than I can relate and no matter what anyone at Carter might say, I did -absolutely nothing- to be treated that way. I had/gave them no bad attitude. I treated no one badly until I was treated that way. Once I demanded my money back and saw that the mgr wasnt really going to do anything, I gave them some of their own medicine and I was nasty back. Wont apologize for that. Mgr was Josh Smithers. The belligerent guy wouldnt give me his name. I am a professional employee, but, had on a ball cap, old clothes, disheveled hair. Wonder if I would be treated the same if I wore my suit in there? I contacted the C.E.O. of Carter Lumber and several other executives and left recorded messages for them about what happened. They did not call me back, but, the next day Josh Smithers, the Mgr., sure did. He apologized profusely and offered me for free, the items I was to buy and offered to deliver them to my home. Unfortunately, he was still defending the employee as a good employee who worked there for 20 years. That wasnt what I wanted to hear. I wanted to hear that the employee would be counseled that the way he treated me was inappropriate and would not be tolerated. So, I will not go back to Carter Lumber or accept their freebies. If customers continue to patronize businesses that treat them this way, expect it to get worse. Executives: If this happened to me, you can bet it has happened to other customers. A person at Glazers Lumber (just down the street from Carter) said he has been getting customers from Carter for over 25 years due to poor treatment and service. My advice is to never buy from a business that treats you in a undignified manner. Let your money and continued patronage go to other business who appreciate you. To address James Rockons comments: (Really, you are going with that name? Hard to take you seriously with a name like Rockon and very original too). I assume that someone put you up to your review (a friend of, relative of, or for favors from Josh Smithers perhaps, or another employee?) as my review was the only one for Carter Lumber prior to yours, and yours addresses me directly. I am glad they treated you well, as I have heard lots of accounts of bad treatment of customers at that location. Carter should be ashamed of the blatantly awful treatment I received. The CEO and other management that I contacted at Carter Lumber made no excuses for people who evidently do not appreciate their own jobs (chasing away customers is not a normal model for business success). I imagine if Carter Lumber employees yelled at you for no reason other than try to ruin your day, you would have reviewed Carter much the same as I did. I have been to that location numerous times before, mainly for proximity reasons. For the most part I have never received any service that had any sense of urgency, friendliness, helpfulness, or made me want to go back. And, oh yea, yelling or not, the truth has no boundaries and I imagine the executives at Carter Lumber are not so easily mislead. I hope these unprofessional events are discussed with Mr. Smithers at his next performance appraisal, as well as his good 20 year employees.
