I was out on a ride and had a razor blade go through my tire. Gave Bike Improve a call, despite it having closed a few minutes earlier. They waited around for an extra bit so I could walk over and get a new tire and tube. Very kind of them to stay past closing to help me.

As many others have said... Nir truly is one of the best bike mechanics in town. Hands down.He knows his stuff and won’t always tell you what you “want” to hear but you can trust that his advice and work comes from YEARS of experience. They “walk the walk and talk the talk” at Bike Improve, meaning they are avid riders. If you can get past Nir’s sometimes blunt delivery, you really will have found yourself one of the best local bike shops in town!

First time visiting Bike Improve and the owner and mechanic showed exceptional service and hospitality.During my bike ride my rear shifter cable snapped leaving me unable to shift my rear gears. I came in like a dog in the rain asking for assistance.Owner and mechanic happily took the bike and started to work on it! I hung out in the shop and exchanged bicycling stories over coffee! Thanks again for the work done. I was able to ride my bike home for 20 miles without any issues.

Hands down the shop I trust the most with my bikes. They’ll tell it to straight, rubs some people wrong, but trust is about honesty?Full service including forks! Shop started for primarily service and have maintained that emphasis. They’re active riders and test the stuff before selling it.Plus there’s ice cream!

I wish I could write something more positive but I’ve had three unpleasant experiences. Most recently, I brought in my bike with a tire that wouldn’t hold air. I agreed to replace not just the tube but also the tire, and I also decided to have him replace both tires since the bike is old and had not been used in a long time. He told me I would need to wait there while he did it because his shop is very small (true) and he has no place to store bikes (turns out false). Seemed reasonable, though the style (as in my previous experiences with him) wasn’t very pleasant, so I waited, paid, thanked him--he never thanked me--loaded the bike in my car and went home.Exactly a week later I took the bike out for the first time and discovered that, of all things, the rear tire wouldn’t hold air! I brought the bike back in and again he told me I had to stay. I couldnt but told him I’d be back in 45 minutes. When I returned, the bike was done, and, lo and behold, it was safely locked up to the bike rack just outside the entrance to his shop. So why did he tell me I had to stay?I asked what had caused the tire to fail, and he said that maybe the tube had gotten pinched between tire and frame, and anyhow, he wasn’t going to charge me. I laughed, “Charge me? Well, of course not. You replaced the tire a week ago and this is the first time I’ve used the bike.” To which he said, “I don’t think it’s your fault, so I’m not going to charge you.” He must have said that three times. Wha? He seemed to think I owed him thanks for not charging me, which is more than a little backward. Instead, how about Gee, I’m sorry for your extra trouble in having to bring the bike back in. Glad to have had the chance to make it right. After all, it was my afternoon plans that got totally screwed up.I like to support small local businesses, and I live right nearby, but theres been something unpleasant in every interaction here. Im not going back.

Similar experience to others, very thin patience. Ignored me when I walked in. The prices are extremely high and seem to be pulled out of thin air. One of the worse, if not the worst experience Ive ever had in a bike shop.Theyre extremely over priced. And the workes try their best to take more money from you for just doing simple things other shops do for free!!I know theyre in Westood, rent is not cheap - I get it. But over changing customers and bad customer service, thats a No No.My story: I went to the store to fix my flat tube. They asked for $20 for the service. I said alright (Helens Cycles fixed my tube before for $8 only). They told me to leave my bike and come back after an hour and a half. Alright, did that. Came back by the time, my bike hasnt been fixed yet. They asked me to wait for extra 15 minutes, I said NP. After 25 minutes, one of the workers called me pointing that the interior wheel-ring needed a tape. I said alright NP, just tape it. He said well do but you will have to pay us extra $8!!! Just for tapping a dam wheel-ring, which I can do my self. I can buy a tape for $0.50 then roll it arround the ring (done it before, takes less than a minute to do). They thought I was stupid and didnt know how bikes work. They tryied to rip me off!! (BTW Helens Cycles had done the tape thing for me free of charge, because its a bloody simple thing to do for your customers, especially if you overcharged them). What a bad experience!!TLDR; dropped my bike to fix the tube, in Bike Improve. They charged me $20, asked to come back in an hour and a half. Was there on time, but got delayed. 25 min later, worker asked for extra $8 just to tape the wheel-ring (a thing that other bike shop do for free .. also other bike shops charge 60% less for fixing the tube than this location). Bad experience.

Didn’t last beyond a phone call with these guys. I called to see what they could do for my bike and about three minutes into the conversation the guys patience waned thin. He said he couldn’t give me any estimates or even a general range of cost and he said I just needed to bring in the bike, and pretty much refused to answer my questions. Guys at other bike shops were able to give me estimates without hesitation.

Ive never felt judged before but now I know hot it feels.

I didnt have go into the actual shop yet, but I had a really excellent experience with the owner. On a weekend evening, I was out cycling in the hills when I got a flat up on Mulholland. I was out of tubes. I immediately realized I was going to have to call for a ride when a guy in a minivan pulls up and asks if I need some help. A few minutes later, the owner of Bike Improve had installed a tube (he was a lot faster than me), and we chatted for a few minutes. He could have just driven by, but he stopped to help.

This was my second visit to Bike Improve. The first was not very good either, but not horrible.Im not a heavy biker. I just ride to get to work which is only a couple miles away. I have an old bike that at times requires some attention. The first visit, I just wanted to blow up my tires. They seemed very low. The salesmen/clerk behind the desk told me to pump it up to 100 psi...I found out later that the tires only recommended 90 maximum. I rode home from work the next day and the tire blew out from too much pressure. The clerk wasnt very helpful either. He seemed more interested in his biker magazine. The second visit is why Im writing this review. My crankshaft had fallen off while going to work. Not a very good way to start the day. At the end of the day, I drove my bike to Bike Improve and brought it inside. No one was around so I walked to the repair center around the corner. I stood there staring at the mechanic for a couple minutes until he seemed ready to deal with me.When he came over I described my issue and how I would possibly need to replace the crankshaft. He first told me I shouldnt have bought a cheap bike. Not very polite, but ignored it, because I know myself the bike is cheap. My next question was how much a replacement would cost. I was expecting something like $300. He response was around $100. I said I would be willing to pay up to $200 for the part and the labor. He said I could just buy a used bike for that much...obviously that would just put me back into a similar situation with an old, used crankshaft or other old part, that would quickly go out on me. Also, didnt you just tell me to not buy cheap bikes?I then asked what specifically caused this. He then blamed me for chewing inside of the crankshaft myself, when really, I think the bike was old (its from the 80s) and it was time for an upgrade. Point being, he blamed me for riding the bike...ok...not really giving me any solutions and it didnt sound like he wanted my money or my business. So at that point I just walked away and eventually got the tools and parts myself to repair it.I should have turned around and told him he was being rude, but I didnt. Hence me giving them a poor review on yelp. I will never go there again.

I came in here because it is near my house and I had a creaking noise that I could not fix on my own. Nir didnt even set down the bagel he was stuffing into his mouth as he told me that my bike was too old (2005 Stumpjumper FSR, kept in good condition) and that I definitely just needed to get a new bike. I got out of there as fast as I could.

I went in to get a pair of speedplay zero cleats for my shoes as one of mine finally broke after a long time of useage. I normally get all my parts at Helens cycles no matter what but my cleat broke basically right at the corner of this shop. I had actually seen it but never walked into this shop. As I walked in I said hi to the gentlemen at the counter and got no response just ignored me for watever he was doing I shrugged it off. I went and grabbed the part I needed which were the cleats and I shrugged off the fact that the clips were not in the normal packaging im used to seeing so I shrugged it off walked up the the guy at the counter let him know im ready to go... He ignored me again and just kept looking down after about 5 minutes he finally looked up and began to charge me. I walked away just thinking watever people have attitudes sometimes but the customer service needs work thats for sure. I got home and installed the cleat to my shoe. I had put 67 miles on the cleats with covers on them so they were barely damaged at all. I went for a ride trying to put another bit of miles on the bike and crashed very lightly on the bike path in santa monica I have had situations like this before and the cleats are designed to let go on impact. Well the cleats I got from them tore the screws still in the nuts right out of the cleat! I have never seen this happen before ever shared with a friend and he had never heard of it before either. My deduction of this is the quality that they allow in there shop is very poor. I will never go to this shop again as the quality is freaking horrid and the pricing is ridiculous. I race and ride a high end bike and personally if im paying that much for a item I want people that are atleast happy with there job and helping you and a quality product. I will continue to keep my business at Helens and never return here again.Although I dont think the staff nor owner there could give a spit less if all there business is walking away because I can see that the service has a reputation for not giving a spit about any of there costumers.

His response, I dont think you should be doing that. Why are you telling me what I should and should not be doing? You have no knowledge of my mechanical abilities.Goes back to look for said part.
