I left my 100 year old hatchet to be sharpened here and I couldnt be less pleased. I was told it would be $6, but it was $10 when I picked it up. I did a quick inspect, saw some discoloration on the bit, and asked if theyd applied heat to ruin the temper. I was told no, put it in the sheath and walked out. Upon closer inspection, there was enough heat applied to char the temper, but not blue it. The bit was also folded over as if a strop hadnt been used at all. The toe of the hatchet bit had a good amount of material ground off. With the fold and the over-grind of the toe, I wouldnt have trusted it to split wood and remain in working order for very long. Im re-filing the bit and sharpening it myself again. The hatchet actually had a better edge on it before they worked on it. This isnt about the $10, its about the quality of work. If this was my shop I wouldnt have been proud of it.Ive included a couple pictures of the toe from either side after Ive filed it. Its clear theres a nice radius to the bit and then a shoddy flat angle the last half inch from their grind.Again, this is a hundred year-old piece of metal and their only consolation was tool steel can be tough. Its not ruined, its just not in better condition than when I left it, which is the ultimate disappointment.Edit: Ive added a before photo of the radius of the grind. There wasnt a flat spot on the toe before Northwest Knives touched this.

Very good selection in top quality brands. The store owner was very helpful and very knowledgeable about her products. I was in from out of town and definitely will be making some online purchases because of the good experience here. If you are looking for a good quality knife this is the place!

Went in to get a couple of chefs knives and a pocket knife sharpened and they were the nicest friendliest staff I have dealt with in a while. A wide selection of all types of knives and accessories, plus my knives are crazy sharp now!PLUS since Idaho and Meridian have lifted their mask mandates, neither employees or the customers are masked unless they want to. The sense of normalcy was a breath of fresh air.EDIT: Also, forgot to mention, their prices are SUPER competitive. As I was looking over their selection I was kind of amazed that their prices werent jacked up, especially for a little specialty shop.

The best knife shop in Idaho in my honest opinion. Everyone there is friendly, knowledgeable, and always up for a little banter. I first came in for some chef knives and when I first saw their selection I was amazed. Even their cheapest knife was high quality and beautiful. Ive come in since to pick up several new knives, a knife bag, and to get my knives sharpened and I am yet to find a reason to complain. This has been my recommendation to all of my co-workers of where to get new knives and they also were amazed of this place. Overall keep up the good work!!!!

Was in the market for some high end Japanese kitchen knives. Initial contact was by phone and I liked what I heard from the owner. When I stopped by I was told he was off for the day and ended up with is daughter. Ugh I thought. Was I ever WRONG! This lady was extremely knowledgeable and courteous. Ended up purchasing 8 Miyabi knives for myself and several Shun knives for my kids, and as a bonus got to meet the co owner and her mom in the process. I was able to buy local at a very competitive price, while meeting some wonderful people. Can beat that! If you need a quality knife and experience go to them

Awesome experience. Dropped off a small pocket knife to be sharpened. The store is full of top quality knives of all types. Definitely a place to hang out and check out the goods. Anyway, when I arrived to pick up my knife the place was very busy. And instead of having me wait in line to pay the proprietor just said it was on the house and to come back and see him when I needed a knife or sharpening service again. I will most definitely be back. You dont get service like that on-line and I alway try to help the local businesses when I can. Friendly staff and a great selection of knives! Sharpening takes 24 hours so plan accordingly. We did not, and really missed our knives while cooking dinner. A sharp blade makes the process of chopping and dicing effortless.

This is where you go for quality. Northwest knives has an outstanding selection of all kinds of blades. From any kind of utility to high end craft Kitchen or Tactical they have it. The staff is very knowledgeable and can really help you find what youre looking for. We were referred to Aaron after a year-long nightmare with another local kitchen store. He was tremendously helpful and knowledgeable in my search for kitchen knives. He made sure I got a set that will fit me and nothing I didnt need. He also has an incredible inventory of Benchmade knives, to my husbands delight. Great to have a specialty store like this in our area!

Note: I did not personally visit the store but had to review based on how wicked sharp my knives are now... I sent my boyfriend in with my kitchen knives after a recommendation from Cabelas. My kitchen knives looked like they had been through a war, complete with visible knicks, etc... I probably created a monster because BF came home and raved about what a cool store that is for the rest of the night. The next day, BF picked up my knives, bought himself a few new knives, and made a list of future knives to buy - all made in the USA. I couldn’t believe them when I saw them, because they were sharper than the day I bought them, and all the knicks are GONE. While the knife sharpening service was very reasonably priced, if you send your SO, it will probably cost a few $ more because this place has AWESOME stuff. Thank you!!

Well Im confused by my visit - i have a knuckle finger knife that is 440 stainless steel - was told by them that it cant be sharpened because it is a soft metal - i have 5 samurai swords that are 420 & 440 stainless steel & i had them sharpened so not quite sure what to think actually ... Everything i even read on Google states it is the best steel for sharpening...

Took three of my Zwilling-Henckels Professional S to Northwest Knives to try their sharpening service. Although I take very good care of my knives and have them professionally sharpened about once a year, I had clearly lost track of how a great knife is supposed to feel, how it is supposed to perform during kitchen prep tasks, how it is meant to be drawn almost effortlessly through vegetables and meat. Aarons skillful work reminded me why I had spent around $1000 for top-quality knives ten years ago! I took three of them to him: a 10 chefs knife, a 5.25 hollow-ground santoku, and an 8 carving knife. The santoku was noticeably dull prior to sharpening and I knew it; it came out sharp and brilliant and is once again a favorite! The carving knife has been a perennial disappointment and I hardly ever bother pulling it from the block; since Aaron laid hands on it, it has quickly become a pleasure to use and a great tool! And the 10 chefs knife...well, Aaron inspected that visually and grazed the edge with his fingers. He said, Hold on, Ill be right back. I heard a machine start up in the back room and a moment later he emerged with my knife; it was absolutely as sharp as ever! Drawing from his experience, he recognized that sharpening the chefs knife would be overkill, and because hes a knife care professional and an ethical businessman, he honed it on his 5000rpm machine and handed it back to me in phenomenal shape. And at no additional charge.I wont disparage some of the other local knife sharpening services I have used, but I can say that Aaron at Northwest Knives is a cut above! Retails an impressive display of German (carries the full Wusthof line) and Japanese knives and knows the skinny on every single item. Suffice it to say, he is now my go-to guy for help with my fine kitchen cutlery, and if you demand excellence, he should be in charge of your knives too.
