Good selection of Sake, Shochu, Japanese Whiskey, and Japanese Beer. There are also some primo soy sauce and other culinary enhancers to be found in addition to bar ware and tenugui. Before the pandemic they also had a lovely tasting bar in the back to sample different sake, Shochu, etc. They are primarily doing curbside pickup now, but definitely waiting in anticipation for that tasting bar to reopen.
As a first sake experience this was super mellow and welcoming. The bartender Brad was very chill and informative. We learned sake is complex and unusual in the best way, it can taste like sweet fruit or the rind of cheese.Umami Mart is half tastingbar and half retail. The entire space was well laid out. Lots of great options to start your sake quest, as well as gifts for your F&F.
They have a great selection of Japanese wares and an even greater selection of sake, shoju, and beer. The space is beautiful and immaculate and the staff is super friendly and helpful. What a great addition to the neighborhood!
What a great store! There should be a mart dedicated to umami in every city! Love that they also have a solid collection of Japanese craft beers. Really enjoyed the soy sauce tasting too. So many fruity and spicy flavors in the different soy sauces. You can also order from them online.
Best place in the Bay Area to buy sake, period. The new location has a cool little bar, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and their sake Gumi membership is fantastic way to find new and interesting sakes. Highly recommended, Id give 6 stars if I could.
Fantastic little shop with a great selection of sake and Japanese snacks, as well as beautifully designed ceramic dishes and cups. I love the homey feel and the people are really nice. If I could, I would hang out here all day!
This store is a fantastic spot to grab a nice gift. There are cool mugs, vases, knives, and a variety of other elegant and classy options. For day to day shopping, there are Japanese snacks and lots of sake, beer, and whisky. Note that have beer in a cooler, so you can pick it up cold. Friendly and warm staff as a bonus! I definitely recommend checking this place out.
Great selection of curated products, knowledgeable and friendly staff, charming addition to the neighborhood.
The store is beautiful and clean. The staff were very kind and cheerful! They have a great collection of different sake and other drinks (loved the sparkling yuzu drink *its like a Japanese lemon) and the culinary wares they sell are high end and quality! Definitely recommend stopping by and even just looking around! They have tonnes of cute and beautiful stuff.
Great spot to try a flight of sake that you might not otherwise encounter.
Amazing! Loved every step I took into their well curated space.
Tons of super cool items. Great if youre a fan of Japan or fancy cocktails. They also have an online store. Super expensive.
The team at Umami Mart do such an amazing job bringing well-curated bits of Japanese culture home to Oakland. Their tableware and barware are fantastic, the books and gifts interesting (some really nice furoshiki!). But the jewel is their selection of sakes and sochu, and, with the new location, their REALLY convivial sake bar in back. This really is the best of Oakland!
One of my favorite shops in Oakland. They carry some local products, but they specialize in Japanese items. And they have an unbelievable selection of Japanese beer.
Amazing selection of beer and a lovely bar!
Awesome local spot with a great selection of Japanese bites and beers. One of the few places to get many of the Hitachino varieties.
Ive been a Sake Gumi, the Sake of the month, member for a little while now and I couldnt be happier. Yoko and staff are knowledgeable and make great suggestions for pairings with Sake. Yes, Sake is delicious paired with more than just Sushi or Sashimi. They have a great selection of hard to find Japanese beers here and other items. The selection for the amateur bar tender, or even mixologist, is hard to beat.
Love this cute little foodie shop in the heart of downtown Oakland. Great for presents for your foodie friends or for yourself.Very friendly and helpful staff, a heavily curated collection of largely Japanese-oriented cooking and dining supplies and accessories. I loved their ceramic and glassware particularly, which were lovely and reasonably priced. The little food stand they have out front had some delicious asian fusion tostadas for sale that were the perfect snack after shopping there.
Umami Mart!?! What foodie could resist stopping into any place named Umami Mart?On Broadway just south of the Oakland City Center, Umami Mart proudly displays Japanese foods and beers, which themselves are worth a visit - among with our areas Asian grocery stores - but what gobsmacked me was their TASTABLE selection of soy sauces.Thats right, a bunch of curated soy sauce varietals, with tiny tasting cups alongside. Its eye opening to sample the differences between the types of lovingly crafted artisanal shoyu. There are some with light taste, others with a deep almost chocolate taste, and others that have added highlight flavors. Also Japanese glassware and other home decoration stuff, but those didnt taste good and will not be mentioned further.
One of the few, if not only, japanese shops to have items from the far east to locally sourced. Shurbs, exotic barware, snacks, coffee beans, and bitters. As of late, varieties of sake and brews have appeared. A nice collection of books for mastering drinks sits upon the wall. Some of my best gifts from here. Heres hoping to years more of such.
Love the store and the products. Makes me miss Japan even more!
I was thrilled when the ladies of Umami Mart signed a lease after their residency in the pop-up hood. This store sells awesome housewares from Japan and local purveyors such as ceramicists Atelier Dion. They also have a konbini in the back with Japanese snacks (hellloooo green tea kit kat), ingredients for cooking, and other cool food items like fresh Japanese spice mixes from Oaktown Spice. My favorite thing is that Umami Mart carries a wide selection of classy barware for your entertaining and home mixology needs. Love the Miracle Mile yuzu bitters, and recently picked up copper Moscow mule mugs made in Japan.Apart from the cool stuff they sell are the awesome events they host or co-host at their shop and around the Bay. Indeed, Umami Mart is a lifestyle, bringing a fusion of Japanese and Oakland styles of food, design, and general hipness. They recently finished their hallway that leads straight into the Trappist back patio, which could not be a more perfect union. Embrace the Umami.
Super cool japanese things
Wonderfully designed shop, great gifts.
Friendly and informative staff
A new pop up in Oakland.
Come for what you need. Leave with what you want, and more!
