What an incredible place. Wow. When we walked in, we thought “we’ll just take a look around and go on with our day.” We ended up sitting there for 2 hours. The girl who owns/runs the place was so friendly and helpful, and offered so many suggestions of places to go and see in Oklahoma City! The atmosphere was so cute and aesthetic. There was so much room to sit and meet with people and talk. It was such a sweet space that really fostered good community. The books were so diverse and beautifully organized. I found a book by my most favorite poet there. I am so thankful. If you’re in the area, stop in. Stay a while. Buy some books!! Get some cards, notebooks, pottery. It’s so worth your time!!

One of the coolest—if not—the only book store that carry the current, contemporary book listing. There’s art book, coffee table book, wanderlust photo book, graphic novels, books about tea, A24 newsletter, books about Bauhaus models, etc etc. If you’re into trendy, artsy, contemporary pieces, then this bookstore is for you. The space is super comfy, with huge mid-century sofas to read and ponder to at the center. I think they also have a cafe next door. What a homey space! Treat yourself a comfortable evening and drop by Commonplace bookstore when you’re around Midtown, OK. There are lots to look around and maybe carry home with you!

Very beautiful and quaint store. The layout is very aesthetically appealing. The scent is a bit overbearing as it was a tad cloying even under my mask. A great selection of books and laid out well. I wanted to buy almost every single thing there. There was a very nice hardback, tiny selection of classics too! The prices are regular as theyre all new books. Great store!

Fell in love with this bookstore! Every book I picked up looked so fascinating. I wish I could have bought more! The selection felt very curated and special. The ambiance and aesthetic were also really special. This experience reignited my love for independent bookstores. Also, the tote bag and bookmarks are such a nice touch! We stumbled into this little gem by accident, and Im so glad we did. The owner knows all the books very well and has very intentionally curated them. All of the books were interesting, aesthetically beautiful, and Im willing to bet very thought provoking. The childrens books are all unusual, perfect for a shower where you know everyone is bringing Rainbow Fish, and all of the artwork is exquisite. We could have easily spent all day in this hidden wonderland, because the place was airy and welcoming and everyone who worked there was so knowledgeable and friendly.

I really like the overall interior and the way the space was organized, but it was very pricey. Perhaps Im just too accustomed to used book stores, but I wouldnt pay over $30 for a book if I can get it from the library. The appeal is really just in the environment of the store.Edit: Thank you for taking the feedback seriously! Were looking forward to visiting again when you have a few more paperbacks in stock.

Review №33

Its really hard to write a review with only 3 stars and honestly if the environment of this store wasnt so inviting I would have probably given it two. Ive wanted to check out commonplace for a few years now. I lived in the same building when it was built, so I was back in town and gave it a try. Charging 160% more than I can get the book at other stores in the area, and 170% more than Amazon is frankly really embarrassing. I didnt mention the price when I was checking out, but even the woman who rang me up was shocked at the price. I paid and went on my way, still excited to read my new book, and telling myself the extra $11 I paid for the book just supports local business, so what ever. Beautiful store though. I will say I agree with other reviews that the staff needs something to identify them, and the register would make more sense at a desk and not tucked in the corner, but these are all small gripes, its worth a trip, but be prepared to pay.Since I cant reply to the comment left by commonplace, I just have to leave it here. Obviously yall arent charging more than the listed price of the book, but when everyone else is selling it for a significantly lower price its still the same thing, and my point still stands. And like I said, whats $11 extra to a local store vs a huge giant. I expected to pay more, just not 160% more.

Short version: Aesthetically pleasing and aiming to broaden your literary and intellectual horizons. Excellent for perusing a curious collection.Long version: I have visited Commonplace Books multiple times since moving to OKC a couple a year and a half ago. The bookstore itself is open and welcoming with natural lighting, seating, and a good number of tables which display book covers to grab your attention. You could certainly pop in and pop out with a great book, but you would likely be missing out on hidden gems. If you want a Barnes & Noble-esque warehouse of every book or cheap wholesale items from Amazon, well, then you know where to look, and its not Commonplace. Commonplace encourages you to slow down, open a book, read, talk to other patrons and staffers about the books and the ideas they contain. If all of that wasnt enough to at least pique your interest, then I have one story to tell. I am a public school teacher through OKCPS, and as part of our Rewards of Honor gift card, we received $10 from Commonplace. Our gift card expires at the end of January, so even though this month is tight (post-holidays, no extra Saturday school pay to help pad the paycheck for another month, plus grad school tuition was due), I figured I would get a book or two to celebrate reading. After much hemming and hawing (and some unsuccessful searches aided by a friendly staffer), I picked two books and took them to the register. I apprehensively watched as the books were taken, open, stamped, and then rung up, as I had considered returning one of them depending on the total cost. Noticing my anxiety, I was kindly given the offer to return one of the books, no worries about the stamp. I insisted I get the books; they are important, reading is important, and supporting local bookstores is important. However, to my utter surprise and gratitude, the person ringing me up declared he would meet me in the middle, canceled one of the books from the register, and handed both books to me. Thank you, Ben, for your kindness and generosity. I later heard that you and your co-owners donated a class set of Holes for another teacher. I will definitely tell others to support this place, as they are putting actions behind their words in supporting community.

Wonderful book store and restaurant attached. My family and friends always want to stop here when they visit, and it’s no wonder why! If they don’t have a book, they will order it, set it aside for you if you’re coming in, or help you find another read. The kitchen has never once failed in creating delicious eats and drinks. People are often surprised when I recommend them for drinks, but I have loved almost every drink they have made me- coffee, cocktails, etc. The food is delicious, and I recently was able to meet their new chef who was very knowledgeable and accommodating with my allergies. Really torn on my star rating. Its a really unique location with a beautiful interior. I received a gift card for the bookstore + restaurant (it said it specifically on the card) upon arrival there I came to find out that they wouldnt honor the card in the restaurant and that it was a misprint. I wasnt completely bothered by this fact until I looked around and realized that my $35 giftcard wouldnt allow me to buy hardly anything in the entire store. I ended up purchasing a screen printed canvas reusable bag and a pocket size book (the size of a block of cheese). I also couldnt figure out who worked there and who was there just to hangout. Overall I see what they are going for and think they could be really successful, pricing and service needs a little work.

Very cool concept, very fun interior, and cool deli or whatever down the hall. As far as actual books go, unless you’re looking for a coffee table book, you’re not likely to ever make a purchase here, as they’re full priced, and the only sales they had seemed to be a cart out front with weathered books on it. It seems like more of a hangout spot than an actual bookstore or place that cares about books, otherwise they’d have used section or more competitive prices.

I went here for a reading event that was hosted by my university professor. During the event, I was browsing my phone, looking at rifles. An employee took it as their responsibility to call my school and tell the administration that I was scary and dangerous. They took photos and videos of me, completely invading my privacy. Not cool.To actually review the place, Id like to say the interior design is on point. The books are displayed in a very aesthetically pleasing manner; although the selection is quite small and the selection boring at best, repugnant at worst. They have a kitchen but I didnt order anything. Beer is >$8.Generally speaking Im the type of person to almost blindly support local companies over national corporations, however, Barnes and Noble has a far greater selection with greater ideological and topical diversity. Many of those also have a Starbucks which somehow managed to be cheaper than this places kitchen.

Not extremely odious and satisfying if I may state. The books were brilliantly made by sort that is the reason its not difficult to take a gander at for a book to get some data about. Didnt eat there so cant comment on the food or even what they serve. As far as a bookstore, its extremely small and only new books. Wasnt for me at all. I try not to knock a bookstore, but this was more of a hip hang-out with a dash of bookstore on the side....almost an afterthought: look weve got some shelves, lets put new books on them.Hope it does well and I wish it the best.Edit 10-18-2018:I appreciate the owner taking time to respond. Ive read some other reviews about Commonplace and would like to clarify mine a bit.Im not from the OKC area and have no idea how much this place impacts the community as is implied by at least one review I looked at.I dont want to project a poor review about a business that I browsed in for 10 minutes and didnt even walk to the other side to see the cafe part.To offset things a bit let me add that the place was clean, very nicely done, and would indeed be a great spot to hang out. Come here for something fresh in the way of local bookstore finds and food digs. Their hummus plate is my favorite in town and is big enough to satisfy two people. Dining here for dinner is a unique experience. They usually do a live-reading from a selected work and invite guests to meet and greet one another. The time we went for dinner the chef was absent, but the owner went out of his way to make up for it. Breakfast or lunch options are yummy. Maybe on the little more pricy side, all things considered. However, youll feel good about supporting a local business that gives back to the community and values Oklahoma City.

I had passed by several times and I thought this place might be a little too... scholarly? hip? intimidating? Im not sure, but as soon as I walked in, the atmosphere was so welcoming that all I could think about was hanging out all afternoon. Maybe next time I shouldnt judge a book by its... you know what never mind that one.The music was pleasant and not too stuffy, the furniture was nice, but not so nice that youre afraid to sit in it. One of the owners was there and he did a great job of engaging me when I came in but also let me explore and ask questions at my leisure. The whole experience was warm and inviting, and I havent even mentioned the books yet!First stop and maybe the most impressive part for me was the childrens area: big, breathtaking, imaginative books of all kinds. Around the corner was a quaint little secluded area lined with bookshelves and beautiful mural with a hearty table and chairs at its center. There is also a cozy little parlor area with a gorgeous emerald sofa and strappy leather chairs that I thought looked weird but ended up being extremely comfortable. I could have sat there all day, reading while petting the enormous shop dog.The organization is a little different too: the sections are organized by types of people instead of types of books. It was something I hadnt experienced before and it made for an inspiring bookstore visit. Good job!

One of the worst organized bookstores (new, used, corporate, or independent) I have every been in. There is no discernible organizational structure their selection. There are a few vague thematic titles to sections (other than childrens), like Spirituality or Adventure, but within those sections there doesnt seem to be a distinction based on non-fiction/fiction, genre, or alpha by author or title. Having worked in several libraries, I was equally unable to discern if they were using a library classification system, unless it was some sort of custom analytico-synthetic system. Its clearly a curated collection, as staff I overheard seemed to know what they were out of at a glance, but in terms of browse-ability by customers, the books might as well be in a large pile with a question mark over it. Other than the childrens section (which was surprisingly fantastic), the collection as a whole seems to be very heavily weighted towards non-fiction books trending on NPR and various current top seller lists. It was so frustrating to find a part of the store that made enough sense to browse, that I left without using a gift certificate. There was also so much essential oil in the air that was pretty abrasive to both eyes and nose. There were a lot of people on various electronic devices, many of whom seemed to know one another, hanging around. Combined with the trendy nature of the collection, this makes me feel like it is more of a hangout for those living in the drastically overpriced integrated housing gentrifying this area that this location is a part of, and not necessarily intended to attract many book shoppers outside this demographic. Its a shame because the facility itself looks nice, though there is a bit of wasted space where they could have fit in more inventory (back in the weird space by the restrooms, or with less forward facing only displays). And they have a lovely and friendly pup there. They wouldve done better to look at some other successful indie booksellers in the state like Magic City books and try to organize themselves similarly.

It is a bright and lovely shop, with books for anyone to look through. They do have a more limited stock, but it was still very much enjoyable.

What a great local book shop! When we were there, they were full of kids for a story time. But the place is so open and full of natural light that it was easy to browse and chat. So glad this is a part of our community!
