My wife and I visited a few weeks ago and we LOVED it. The atmosphere was way cool, with aisles and aisles of old books, all hidden in books and crannies.I asked the owner to help me find the weirdest book cover she had and she did NOT disappoint. A very fun place!

Great prices and amazing service. This cozy storefront in historic Pocatello is a veritable maze of shelves filled to the brim with books of varying subjects. There arent many signs but the books are laid out very helpfully and of course the owner will be happy to help you find anything you need! Its hard to walk away without all you can fit within your arms. Definitely check this gem out!

This place is incredible. I can’t believe I didn’t know about this hidden gem! If you love the old bookshop on a rainy day feeling this place is for you. I walked in today for my first time and literally teared up, but hey that’s a book nerd for ya! It is my perfect idea of a used bookshop. Towering bookshelves, random seating hidden among corners and aisles, smells of old and new books, random and interesting displays of art, plants, decor and rugs….. if you love books- go. The owner is wonderful. He’s put his heart and soul into this place and I can tell his passion for the business by talking with him. Very helpful and kind, he loves to talk and will guide you towards anything you may be looking for and offers great suggestions based on personal interests.

What a cool bookstore. It really is a maze. There are meandering avenues, a cool skylight, lots of plants. Most of the lighting is from lamps that are spaced around the perimeter. At first glance there doesn’t seem to be a system of organization. (You can tell there are sections, but not much beyond that) we didn’t have time to visit with the proprietor, but I’m certain he knows the location of every book in the store. If you are looking for books, or just what to explore a fun store you should stop by. This picture was taken with a camera not on a cell phone.

I only wished I had more time to peruse the wares. Ended up scoring a couple books of William Blakes poetry, though. Place is full of great selections. Customer service was on point and chill.

This place is a treat for the used bookstore connoisseur.

If there was a negative star or black star I would give it. The owner not only refuses to sell certain books to certain customers, he absolutely refuses to help. Unfortunately, this has been the only bookstore in Pocatello for years, and we have suffered in silence. I would love a quaint little bookstore to take my business to and get a cup of coffee and look through books and magazines. This however is a hoarders paradise disguised as a bookstore.

An authentic used and new bookstore. Shelves upon shelves of amazing books you wont find in Barnes and Noble or any other big box bookstore! The owner is friendly, knowledgeable, and well read. Stop in and buy that book you need to fill in your collection!

The store was poorly lit. I kept having bare light bulbs glaring in my face. It was a very cluttered store with no labeling for browsers. Much of the pricing was too high.

Adorable book store! Very reasonable priced books, great conversation with the owner/worker!Very quiet place, great for studying or nice place to hangout. Near great antique shops and restaurants. 10/10 recommend and I will definitely be visiting again. Although, I may need a bigger bookcase after a couple more visits!

Seems like a great little book shop. I wish the books were marked a little more clearly as to if they are new or used and what the price is, but the selection is great!

For the past week and a half I have been looking for a certain set of books, to honor a friend that recently passed, with no luck. I finally googled book stores near me and found Walrus & Carpenter. I dont know what I was expecting when I walked in but I was amazed at the broad selection they carry. I found the entire set, multiples of it to be exact, and the man that helped me (owner Im assuming) was very quick and so helpful and polite. The vibe in the store was just as I would expect a old Town book store to be. Just had that feeling of a book store from a movie. Loved it. I will definitely be returning and taking my kids to see all the different kinds of books they have available.

Walrus and Carpenter Books is a gem of a bookstore because as soon as you walk inside, you find yourself in a book oasis: there’s quite and extensive selection and the owner is friendly and the definition of cool!I ended up having a great conversation with him and left with a signed copy of a book he co-authored on Craters of The Moon. At the back of the shop there was an art gallery with pictures and poetry from the book. This outstanding independent bookstore is a little hard to find because its sign isnt very conspicuous, but its worth looking for. At first glance the place looks disorganized, but the books are fairly well sorted, the selection is huge, and the owner (who has written a couple novels and a book about Craters of the Moon) knows his way around and is eager to help. You wont need your cell phone when youre inside. Too much good conversation.

I rarely write bad reviews but this is a place to avoid. I also rarely encounter businesses where the owner is so willing to be rude and put so little thought into what they are saying. My wife and I are the only people in the store and the owner is talking to a friend loudly about women, which I am trying to tune out. Then when our daughter calls and my wife answers he walks over and rudely says no cell phones allowed in his store. While my wife walks outside to see what my daughter wants, I listen to him loudly explain to his friend that he made the cell phone rule because of the college kids that would come into his store and pretend to look at books while talking on their phones. We are in our 50’s and we have 4 children and were visiting Idaho from Texas, so naturally we would answer our phone and clearly we don’t fit into the group that was bothering this guy. So here is the deal, it’s your business so make up whatever asinine rule you want, but applying it irrationally is ridiculous and stupid. But wait! Checking other yelp reviews this same thing has happened apparently to other women whose cell phones have rung in his store. Based on the sexist conversation I was trying to ignore, this owner dude clearly has an issue with women as well as college students. My family are book lovers and I wish the book police could come clean out his store and make them available to both men and women, young and old, so no one has to deal with this sad individual. Bottom line, all the titles in this store are available elsewhere so make your life a little more pure and avoid this idiot and his store.

I give 2 stars because it’s a book store and I love me a good book! Plus you don’t find good used book stores anymore. I absolutely hate tablets and refuse to read on one. I just want a book to hold, I am also a lover of old used books. They have a smell and a history and for some odd reason it’s comforting, however, I have seen the owner of the store multiple times raiding the thrift stores and then I see his prices and yes they are decent but considering I know how much he pays for them I think they are externally over priced. He is also quite rude and wouldn’t give me the time of day. He sat in his chair under a light and shushed me when I tried to ask him about a specific book. I will continue to look at the thrift stores when adding to my collection!

I just love local bookstores. Whenever I travel I always try to visit one. This one is particularly cool. It seems like its in disarray but it was easy to browse and the owner was available to help. He also was an excellent conversationalist, chatting about topics ranging from books to local flora and fauna. Love places like this, chockful of great finds.

Best bookstore I have ever been to. Seriously. But definitely not for everyone. Great service and selection. Its like grandpas basement. Everyshelf is full of wonder, and he knows where everything is. Excellent shop!

I dont believe a couple of the reviews because Will (the owner) is a very a nice guy and one claims a rude woman was working there Ive been there many times and Will is the only person ever working there. He is always patient and helps me find books. Great store with great service highly recommended.

The Walrus & Carpenter is what a used book store should be...shelves and shelves of books with a store owner that knows what books he has there and can direct you to where they are, I love this place.

Piles and mazes of used books to explore (think Benedict Society). Be sure to NOT make a cell phone call while on the premises though! You can be loud, play a guitar and sing, call across the store to a customer, or swear (all of which happened while I was there), but if you use a phone to consult your spouse on a purchase, beware. Otherwise an interesting shop to visit.

I love this bookstore! Ive gotten some amazing deals on new titles, and Ive also found some really gorgeous vintage books for reasonable prices. If youre willing to dig a bit, theres always something worth buying. Will is very friendly, and the store has a great vibe.

This is one of those wonderful bookstores where you never know what youll find. Wandering through the shelves is like digging for buried treasure. You might not find the exact title youre looking for, but youll certainly find something on that subject. If you like brightly lit, tidy mall shops with smiley but ignorant clerks youll hate this place--its dim and untidy, and the owner is eccentric. But if you love old books and used bookshops, then this is one of the best.

A great place to stop in and meander around! My grandpa and I wandered in looking for a book on astrology. We enjoyed looking a the different shelves of books. We asked for some help to find exactly what we wanted. The owner knew exactly where to go. He gave us a great price on the book too!

If I could give this place zero stars I would! The proprietor was engaging in a conversation that was sexist and offensive quite loudly with a friend. I was trying to look through the jumbled mess but was finding it hard to focus due to his loud conversation and lack of organization of the books . My daughter happened to call while I was in the store. He didn’t say excuse me or anything, just told me that no cell phones are allowed. I didn’t see the small sign when I entered and would have been fine with it if he hadn’t been so rude and inappropriate leading up to that point. I stepped outside to talk to my daughter while my husband browsed. When I returned, he was still talking loudly and inappropriately. After my husband made a purchase, I tried to tell him I found his conversation was offensive. His response was to say that he didn’t want to talk to me and there was a sign on the door. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone-especially not women! This guy is rude and uncouth! Buy your books elsewhere!!!!

I love this store! There are tons of books. The owner is very friendly also!! I would definitely recommend this store to anyone.

I went there before when a wonderful lady was working. Called today and spoke to a very rude man. He practically hung up on me, and didnt let me finish what I was staying. I always believe in buying local, but I will never go there again.

My passion is books and my dad gave me his old koinica with all the lenses when I was ten, took pictures and developed, with his help. For twenty years, photography was my passion, loved the pics. My photos were placed into Ashleys hands, took many of court d alene and Farragut State park. My mom loved them, maybe sometime I can share them, if she can ever find them. Given that there is a void of bookstores in Pocatello, this works. There is no organization that I have found though so, getting lost inside and searching for titles of interest is nearly impossible. If this werent the case, Id be in every few days.
