A fantastic Cafe that makes great meals! I would highly recommend stopping in, even if its only to get cake. I had the tomato pie, and beef stroganoff. The service was incredible, and the meals were great. The cake is incredible though, I tried the chocolate pecan, lemon blueberry, and banana pudding. There wasnt a bad option.

The food is very good, my favorites include the wings, crab dip,, pear salad, meatloaf, crab cakes, chicken pot pie ... but the cakes are something else. The chocolate chip cookie dough is amazing. Also German chocolate cake, red velvet and caramel apple pie and so many others to try. Pick the flavor you and like and chances are high that it will be great!!

If you havent tried Hayes Barton Cafeand Dessertery, you must. This super eclectic diner is decorated with memorabilia from the 1940s and has such a great atmosphere! The staff was super nice and the restaurant was clean. The food was so delicious! We got the:Beef Stroganoff - Egg noodles, filet tips in a mushroom sauce,Heirloom Tomato Pie - Buttery pie shell containing heirloom tomatoes and cheese, filet, and green beansNC Fish Stew - Grouper, clams, shrimp, scallops, succotash, heirlooms, bacon, and house stock. 👌👌👌And for dessert... Their famous cakes. The pictures here do not do it justice. We got the lemon blueberry with Cream cheese icing, the banana pudding and the chocolate pecan pie. All to die for!!!Give it a try if you are in the Raleigh area!

Wow! Such a cozy cute place with a great retro 1940s vibe. Food was great and the portions were HUGE! While my wife and I did enjoy the atmosphere and food we really have to talk about the cake. You may have had many a cake in your life but youve never had cakes like these. Gigantic slices baked to perfection with the proper combination of flavor and texture. While we ate we saw dozens of people come in and pick their called in cake orders as this place has quite the local reputation. We were so happy to find this little Cafe and learn what people in the five points area have known for a long time.... Theres no better cake than H&Bs!

The best for vintage vibe date night. Key lime martinis were a great way to start. Highly recommend the old school favorites of meatloaf and chicken pot pie. For more modern the pasta was great and they made it dairy free upon requesr. Also beans and rice was quite tasty. Save room for dessert its a must! We chose the key lime pie for a summer delight. Make reservations ahead of time to ensure you get a table.

Located in the heart of the 5 points neighborhood opens at 6pm and youll find it quickly crowded with familiar and loyal fans for just reasons. Huge, delicious offerings. The meatloaf was firm, moist and sequestered on an island of homemade mashed potatoes and fresh and light green beans.Side basket of cornbread and biscuits made it complete. The porttion seem to work against the prospect of dessert, yet most people find the strength to order a giant $10.95 slice of pie or cake. And you should too.

Went on a Saturday and by 6:30 there was a wait and only one slice of Oreo cheesecake (my sole reason for trying this place.) I thought: theres two untouched keylime pies--that cant be the last slice of Oreo (it was). We were expecting milkshakes and fries but there are different menus for the time of day.You get a strange mixture of at least 6 small pieces of bread. Im not sure when it disappeared from the table but there were at least 4 pieces left so that was a waste. (Wasnt a fan of the pimemto cheese corn bread.)By the time we were ready to box up our comically large serving of pot pie and carrot chocked meatloaf there were few options for deserts so you might want to order that before you eat. The interior is small so its not the kind of place you want to walk into without expecting to wait; seems like they take reservations. Its also pretty easy to feel like you need to rush to help shorten the wait for others. All in all the food was good and the host was charming. I didnt get the impression that there were any biases towards guests of different backgrounds.Cake pictured is the Heath bar one. Would personally prefer a more cake and Heath to the mostly icing ratio but the cake itself was moist.

One of my absolute favorite places in the triangle! Always delicious food, friendly staff, fantastically decorated, and I adore the music! Desserts are a whole fabulous deal, and many come in just to pick up their favorite slice of pie or cake to go. I recommend getting your dessert to go, even if you plan to eat it there, because its going to take you about three days to eat it anyway! The host (manager?) even opens the door for you in a suit/tie that gives this classy joint the introduction it deserves. Its a well-run business all around, and its always a joy to come here! Just make sure to make reservations; its in high demand!

Do you know that exciting feeling when youve lived in a place for a while but discover a new hidden gem? Tonight some friends suggested we check out Hayes Barton for an epic slice of cake. Weve been in Raleigh for nearly 2 years - How had we never heard of this place before?! The unassuming Hayes Barton Café & Dessertery is a 1940s-themed diner and cake shop that feels like an institution, yet its only been serving up food since 1998. Named after the Hayes Barton neighborhood, which includes the nearby Hayes Barton Pharmacy opened since the 1930s, this place has a laundry list of homemade cakes dished out in huge slices in a cozy space that will have you yearning for days gone by. We got a slice of the blueberry lemon cake to share! It was good, not too sweet and the portion was enough for us to have some and take some home. If you live in the Raleigh area or visit, check this place out or take a friend or family visiting from out of town. Its sure to give you all the nostalgic feels.Additional tid bits you should know:1. Parking is street parking which can be a challenge, if you have an appointment to meet here, do give yourself time to find a parking space and walk if needed.2. While it was recommended to us to go here for cake, it does appear that there are a number of people dining in for a full meal. We cannot speak to the quality of food outside of the cake in the present review. However, due to the small space and myriad of diners, it was quickly packed at 8:30 on a Saturday night. If you are going to just get cake, you can get it to stay or go. Line up in the queue for the cashier at the cake counter to the left upon entering. The line moved quickly and we got our slice of cake in a to-go container. However, by luck, in no time, a small table freed up and the host was happy to sit us and provide water and proper place settings for our albeit short time devouring our slice of cake. If you come with a larger party and are hoping to be seated, you may face more obstacles in your pursuit.3. You know this is a good place because speaking with the people in line, they had all been there before. One man who was buying cake said he lives across the street and has gotten cake many times. He recommended the coconut cake.4. The actual list of cakes fills an 8.5 × 10 piece of paper, however, when we were there many options were blacked out. We still had easily between 7-10 options, so we arent sure if we were missing any of the more spectacular cakes. All this to say, do be prepared that they may run out of something!5. Its *not* THE MOST AMAZING CAKE youve ever had, but its pretty darn good and, moreover, the whole thing is an experience- enjoy it!

I’ve never had Hayes Barton but I’ve always wanted to try their cake. Due to the pandemic, we haven’t been to any restaurants and have only been using delivery services. When I called to inquire about the types of cake they have, as Postmates instructed me to, the women who answered the phone was incredibly rude and cut me right off. She said they will refuse any order placed on Postmates. In that case I asked if they used any delivery service, and she said no and continued to lecture me.So, if you’re refusing orders from Postmates, get your business off Postmates. I understand why restaurants would not want to use these services as they do take a large percentage. That’s not my issue here, it was the aggressive and uncalled for tone she used with me, someone who wanted to patronize their business.I’m sure their cakes are amazing, but I will never know because of this horrible (first) experience. I’ll be sure to steer other friends and family away from Hayes Barton who are looking for good restaurants to try in Raleigh.

Menu is a combination of locally sourced comfort food and creative dishes. I had grouper, white peas, whipped potatoes, and fried okra...a little bit of heaven on as plate. Friends had the meatloaf, family recipe, that I would love to have in my recipe file.. its that good. Great ice tea, not as easy to find as you would think. Desserts are off the chart, picture decadent cakes 10 inches high filled with delicious fruits or creams or custards or........ we split a peanut butter cream cake with dark chocolate icing and a seasonal white pound cake with peach filling and cream cheese icing- yes. My wife and I went here for our Anniversary. The place is cozy and decorated like a hipster style 50s diner. I really like it. We started with the iceberg wedge salad which was great then had some of the specials on the menu. My wife went with the almond crusted cod which she devoured. I had the fried chicken with calabash on whipped potatoes. Pretty much the best fried chicken Ive ever had. But you dont go to Hayes for the entrees its all about the deserts at this place. Towering 18inch cakes are what you see when you first walk in and you will want one. I ordered the cookie dough cake and my wife got the brownie batter cake. Even though we are married we both wanted to turn the lights down low put on some mood music and have a intimate moment with our desserts. They were so good and totally worth 5 stars by themselves. The service at this place is great and we will definitely be back again. What I would suggest is going with 4 people so you can make a reservation before hand and guarantee you have a seat. The place gets crowded quickly and can really only hold about 20-25 people at one time.Read less

Review №68

Good pork medallions, great award-winning coconut cake, and fast service. A homey environment with the restaurant’s history all over the walls, it certainly felt like a great spot for a nice, casual bite to eat in Five Points. We had high hopes from the get-go because of the ample amount of good reviews. I live fairly close by, love the neighborhood, and it seemed like a place I would eat at again later, perhaps with my spouse or visiting friends, etc.I wish I could leave it at that, but only in an attempt to leave an honest review for others, and in hopes the management would try to avoid this next time, I’ll share the unfortunate part of the experience, too.We felt rushed from the start by our (to be fair - otherwise kind) waiter who came to our table so frequently to check on our next move that it was pretty obvious she didn’t want us to take our time and enjoy the meal. Then, at the end of the meal, soon after we paid, the manager stopped by with a brief greeting, and asked us to “do him a favor”, telling us he needed our table because he had a big party waiting. Indirectly but oh so obviously, he was asking us to leave. Not even an “I’m sorry to have to ask this”, or an “I appreciate you choosing to dine with us”, not even an offer of one measly slice of complimentary pie to ease the fact that he had just asked customers to leave for no good reason except that he wanted to more comfortably fit in some later arriving party. We are all respectful and friendly people, and we had already tipped well after buying big entrees, drinks, and desserts (5 desserts for a table of 4, I’d add), and none of us made even a little bit of fuss. No weird extra requests, no complaints. I can objectively say we were pretty good customers to have. However, we’re also not going to stay where we aren’t wanted, so we just left and spent more money getting more drinks elsewhere. In my several years working in restaurants, I have never EVER told a customer to leave or even heard another coworker or manager do so. (The exceptions being obvious - i.e. a customer outright harassing someone.) My issues with this are many in number:1. Incredibly tacky and rude to ask your customers to leave because you didn’t plan your reservations well. So if you make that call, at least express some self-awareness and apology. One “sorry” and slice of free pie could’ve made a world of difference.2. It was a special occasion (a birthday) for which we made a reservation in advance. We had been there for an hour and a half, and were already wrapping things up, had paid, etc. I don’t think it’s unreasonable that we would stay there for that amount of time, or even if we had stayed for two hours since we had paid for multiple courses and extra beverages. I might’ve sympathized a little more if we had only had water and some light food, and sat around for an hour after. With all that being said, I don’t really feel like we should need to justify. I merely included all the fine details so you, the potential customer of this business, could make a more informative decision about where you’d like to pay to eat. And hopefully, you, the manager of this business, better plan your reservations and avoid asking good customers to leave.

Love, love, love this place. The Staff is very friendly and attentive. Dinner was excellent. Oh and the dessert! Our favorite is German chocolate cake. Absolutely, the best.It is a very cozy, neighborly feel. We definitely will be back with friends and family.

Locally owned. The husband is super cool. His wife is an amazing chef. Get a slice of cake or pie. You wont regret it.

The cake is delicious! We always get the chocolate brownie peanut butter one. Never had the food. Parking can be hard, but we have parked at the surrounding businesses after they are closed. Haven’t had dinner here yet, but will update if we do.

Had a good lunch. Amazing looking cakes. Polite and professional staff. I had a bologna, chili and cheese sandwich that was different, but really good and probably bad for my cholesterol. Would definitely go back.

While the desserts here were excellent, the service my party received was not. A few of our party of 5 arrived late and, as we sat down, the host came over and told us we had 15 minutes before they needed to clear the bar for waiting customers. We were underdressed and more international compared to their other patrons. I have never been asked to leave a restaurant for any reason and we were paying customers too. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this establishment. If you believe customers should be treated fairly regardless of color or social status, you might consider another business for your dessert fix.

Holy wow at the cakes. A group of us had been at a different restaurant for dinner, wanted cake, and a local told us about this place, and it definitely didnt disappoint! We ended up with 8 pieces of different cakes, all of which were to die for. Will definitely be going back when were in this area.
