Fifty-fifty shot at a good experience. Theyve got some helpful, friendly and knowledgeable guys out back and then they have some that arent. The guys inside can come across a bit unfriendly sometimes. Ive had some experiences both ways inside and outside the building. Got a decent selection of router bits but thats about all as far as tools are concerned. Mainly just a lumber house. Wood is a bit pricey and picked over at times. Really depends on timing with new wood being put out. They will cut exotics to 6 to put back and 8 to put back for domestics.
My latest project is to replace the marble tops on my end tables with solid wood. Abdul found me checking out the various hardwoods and spent a lot of time pulling boards for me, measuring widths, and giving good advice. Without his patience and knowledge, Id probably still be there, pondering! Thank you, Abdul, and thank you to Capitol Lumber for the straight, quality lumber. Now to the workshop!
Locally owned and operated lumberyard, and sawyer. Excellent selection of rare beautiful wood, exotics, hard wood etc. Its worth the trip, bring money, youll want a lot there!
So refreshing an experience compared to crowded big retail options for project lumber. Huge selection, help (when you need it) and very personal selection and checkout experience.Took a quick question at the sales counter to get oriented, but was a breeze from there.
Called them yesterday to get pricing and we all know lumber price is high! But she was so kind on the phone. I had a small list and we priced out in #1 pine and cedar. I went today to pick it up and they were very helpful and pricing was good. Lumber was def higher end than Home Depot or Lowe’s. Overall, would highly recommend
Very helpful people. For me, it was great that they have a large number of different styles of baseboard.
Good Selection of wood. You usually have to walk around and find someone to help you find what your looking for. They have almost anything your looking for. The prices are a lot more than the big box stores for similar wood, but most of what they have you will not find at the big box stores.
Lots of variety. However, when they get to the end of lot, they wont bring out new stock. I was left picking through warped, large knotted boards.
When Home Depot wood just isnt good enough or you need something special.Dont be mislead by the small front of the business - there are big lumber sheds in back. The real deal lumber yard.
Great variety of tropical hardwoods and friendly, helpful staff.
OH my gosh! I cant get over how great this place is! Kim was extremely kind, and Chris in the plywood building went above and beyond to make sure I had exactly what I needed!!! Shockingly good customer service, and great prices! Im SO glad I found this place
Really nice place to do business. Friendly people and quality lumber.
I love it that CCL carries lumber that is not typical at a big box stores. They have the cedar siding for my home and a myriad of other lumbers for projects.
Don’t expect help when you walk in...you’ll be lucky to get noticed. They couldn’t bother to engage me...perhaps because it was a Saturday and they hate having to be there. Huge disappointment!!
If you are a woodworker or need materials for your projects, this place is a good store to check/visit.
Great selection of hardwood lumber. Reasonable prices and occasionally great deals. Their slab and live edge selection is pretty narrow, so you may have to search elsewhere or keep checking back if thats your purpose.Staff is friendly and helpful.
My husband and I had a wonderful experience at Capitol City Lumber today. Chris our sales guy was amazing. He recommended us build a 14 by 6 feet raised bed instead of a 18ft by 3ft. Great pieces of wood to choice from. We will be back for our next project.
The go to lumberyard in Raleigh. Ive always received great service from the entire staff rain or shine. Behind the counter crew is knowledge and a great resource when dealing with older millwork. I typically deal with Nolan on a near weekly basis and from day one hes went out of his way to insure I get what I need and get out in a timely manner. If your going to the big box stores your doing it wrong.
Thanks for helping me with the cedar boards and garden bed corners! I now have the best looking raised garden bed. Hope I am as successful with growing vegetables in it. Thank you for providing a great product for me to work with!
As always, the team at Capital City Lumber had what I needed, gave great advice, and carrier my gallons of stain to my car. And they have a great mask and social distancing policy.
They were so helpful! I was able to get the insulation I needed. Thank you!
Quick unloading this morning.
I have a small furniture business and usually get my lumber for my projects here, the staff is always very helpful and it is a great place to shop while you are there. My biggest gripe however is that when Im writing up quotes for clients I have to call in to get the lumber prices, even for plywood. Witch wouldnt usually be a problem except when I call they are always trying to finish the call as quick as possible witch usually doesnt work out because Im trying to price out multiple types of lumber. If they just put lumber prices and availability on their website it would make it alot eysier.
This was my first time at a lumber yard and it was a bit intimidating. Enter Alex, who took his time to educate me on the wood, the sales process, and overall to help me out with my project. I did not feel rushed and Alex seemed to genuinely care about my project goals. This place is truly amazing and they have so much more than wood to offer. While inside, I saw stains, chips for grilling, and multiple tools. I visited during COVID 19, and they take a lot of steps to make sure you and their employees are safe. Everyone had masks and you are required one as well. I cannot wait to come back here for my future woodworking projects.
Great service, very accommodating, good product selection and prices.
Great experience yesterday picking up lumbar to finish my project. Staff helpful with pulling boards and making sure I got exactly what I needed. Very reasonable prices. Shout out to to Terrance and Nolan!
Fast friendly service. Very professional.
Staff is great, even other customers were polite and helpful. Good selection of hardwood at fair prices. It is tough if you only need short lengths of specific woods due to their rule that requires an 8 length be returnable to the shelf (many boards are already exactly that length, so you either buy the whole thing or nothing). Totally understandable rule though so no points off. Definitely worth a visit!
Excellent selection of hardwoods
I needed to purchase a number of different hardwoods for a project I was working on. The staff was helpful and polite. Their prices were fair and their clearance prices were great. This is a traditional lumber yard so if you are not familiar with woodworking or how to pick lumber, or with wood in general, some research on your part would be helpful. Ideally you should know what youre looking for and come prepared with sizes and lengths needed. All-in-all, great staff.
As a general contractor, I have patronized Capitol City Lumber for years. They are a locally owned business founded in 1947. They stock a variety of lumber and many species of wood including some exotic species. They have a wide selection of moldings which is really helpful when trying to match older moldings. They are an excellent vendor for woodworkers and for those looking for supposedly discontinued products. If its a hard-to-find product, your best bet is Capitol City Lumber. If they dont stock the product, they can probably order it for you. The salespeople are very helpful. The lumber yard staff are sometimes a little slow in getting your order ready for you. They do allow you to pick your own lumber.
The place to go for all the good stuff you cant get at Lowes
Stopped by not realizing that during the virus, appointments were needed. When the guy at the gate found out I just needed a single piece of window trim, he got me help right away with Nolan. The guy knows his stuff and I was in and out in 10 minutes. I can’t say enough great things about him and the other staff members . Rob P
Duron was wonderful. Ill shop again because of the time he shared with me to assure I got what I needed.
Special ordered some product online through them, and just wanted to say that their customer service (and pricing) cant be beat. I would definitely use them again, Kim rocks!
I, like others, was intimidated. I mentioned to the employees at the desk it was my first time in a lumber yard. Nobody offered to help me with my project or show me around. I couldn’t find what I needed so I left empty handed.
This is my go to place to find items not offered at the big box home improvement stores: gorgeous wood laminates! Picture rail! Above all, the staff is super helper and knowledgeable!
Stay away, listed services on their website which they refused to provide it for no reason. Save your time and go somewere else.Reply to owner comment:You should put this information on your web site. When I was in your store you sad that this is good idea, BUT few month later nothing was changed! Then do not tell that you care about your customers!
Quality lumber. Helpful staff. Im just starting to think about various projects around the house and the staff was so helpful giving me advice on what wood to buy, etc
The variety of product available was phenomenal, the quality of the plumber choice, and the service was impeccable. 10/10 would spend money I dont have there again
Outstanding service! Expert crew!!
Helpful and friendly staff
These people must be giving their own reviews because their prices are too high
Great selection and great customer service!
We got what we needed but the only employee that even acted like they wanted to help was Chris. Thank you Chris for your friendly service.
A great traditional lumber and hardwood supply store, its like stepping back in time. Ive bought lumber and woodworking supplies from Capital City Lumber for a number of years and have nothing but praise for them. If youre looking for exotic hardwoods, they have a whole back building full of local and exotic woods, much larger and cheaper than the local wood worker specialty shops. Ive purchased black walnut from them on several occasions.I also have an older home with trim molding that is not something you can find at a big box store. This is where I go for any non-standard dimensioned wood or trim. They have just about any dimension wood type and size you could want. Lastly, they have dried treated lumber. This is great if you want to build something out of treated lumber and not have to wait 6 months for it to dry out before you can to paint it.If you do woodworking or any home building/repair, you owe it to yourself to walk through Capital City Lumber.
This really is the only place to go for good lumber for finished projects, the big box stores will kill you on board prices of any of their clear wood, and have a limited variety, not so here. they have everything you will need for most carpentry projects, as well as other building supplies. I enjoy the fact that they will help load you up and you dont have to haul everything to a register, I hate moving materials 3-4 times before they even get to the jobsite.
I have always had a good experience shopping for lumber here, everyone from the yard sales clerks to the front desk have been helpful and friendly. Their seasonal sales are pretty good also, all around they are a nice place to do business.
Very overpriced compared to home depot for pine framing lumber, they dont advertise prices
Great service and high quality products. Highly recommend for when you want to use the higher quality lumber you can’t get at the big box stores.
Waited around for 20 mins for someone to write up a ticket for the stuff I loaded into the back of my truck so I could pay for it, but I couldnt get anyone to help. So I dumped my stuff and left.I hear theres a store with better service in Gibsonville, so I guess Ill try that next.
Great
Great place for hard to find woods and sizes. Customer service is first rate. Tip your cut man!
Nice selection of wood, in good condition. Prices fair. Best place to buy lumber in Raleigh area.
The staff is always great and they have the best prices around. By far the best lumber yard in the triangle
Great people, great product, great price. I was in town from Toronto and doing a small project for the friend I was visiting, and Im so glad I came across Capital City Lumber.Whenever I visit my friend again, Ill be sure to come up with another project just so I can have an excuse to see these fine folks again.RyanToronto, Canada
Great people and really high, high quality stuff. The guys will help you load your truck in 100 degree heat -- and even jump your truck when the battery cant handle the temps :)
I had a great experience and would go back again before even thinking about Lowes or Home Depot. Me and my girlfriend were making a bed and only had some clue about what we were doing. We were helped in the lumber yard by Terrence and he was instrumental in our decision making. He was insightful, knowledgable, and patient as we went through stacks and stacks of lumber. Fairly priced and easy to navigate. 5 stars was an easy decision.
Everyone was very helpful. It is easy to find what you need.
Great hardwood prices especially when on sale. I like to go often but buy only when I find something special. Wood is grown not made so you have to wait for something amazing to show up.
Very extensive hardware store, and it was a great experience.
I have bought red & white oak, walnut, cherry, cypress and mahogany from CCL on several occasions. No hardwood is perfect. I have bought many board feet of the same hardwoods from Alabama Hardwoods. Still, no hardwood is perfect. I spend time any place I purchase hardwood from making sure I can find the straightest possible. It aint gonna happen every time. Some people will indeed find find something to complain about. I love woodworking. I am not going to allow a little bend or camber to keep me from my passion. Look and find the piece that is as straight as possible and take it. You have to look. Ive gone through a whole stack of wood until I found the diamond in the rough.Stop complaining.
This was my first experience buying hardwood lumber after doing a lot of research for a dining table project. I’m one of those people who doesn’t make a hasty decision on expensive things. The Yard Attendant Troy was extremely helpful. He took the time to throughly answer and explain every question I had and then some. Not only that but he cut and loaded the lumber for me and seemed extremely happy to do so (and I didn’t even end up with very expensive lumber)! It took me about 2 hours total and not once did I feel rushed or pressured. I was able to pick through the stock at my own pace and was helped as soon as I was ready to checkout. I will definitely be visiting Capitol City for future hardwood projects!
Rip off. Good selection of lumber, but charged me $60 and made me wait a week to cut down an 8 ft piece of hardwood, 2 straight cuts. Ridiculous.
Good selection of hardwood lumber
Great selections and also grest customer services!
Friendly and knowledge staff. Lots of unusual or hard to find lumber and building materials.
Good
Very helpful and knowledgeable staff not afraid to send you elsewhere if they dont have what you need. Lots of different wood type choices.
THIS IS A VERY DISHONEST BUSINESS!! Do not buy Windows from Capital City Lumber. They windows that were delivered where not the windows ordered and signed for. They admitted that they ordered the wrong ones but could only offer a 5% discount on a replacement order. REALLY! THEY ORDERED THE WRONG WINDOWS!!!!!!!BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!
Friendly! Helpful
What a great place, many great products and a wonderful staff of helpful people
I recently bought a 5/4 thick cherry lumber for some doors. I only needed about 15 bd ft andthey had 103 bd ft in inventory. I was only able to find one board of about 12 bd ft that wasusuable. The board was supposedly surface planned two sides to a final thickness of 1. Thesurface on one side was very badly planned requiring me to remove about 1/32 of thickness. I then found out the variation of thickness across the length of the board was about 1/16. I had already cut up the board so I could not return it. I formally complained to Edward Nicholson at Capital Lumber regarding my experience. He said they had an issue with their wood supplier concerning a supply of wood back in October that was planed incorrectly. He said they had thought they found all of it and had it returned. He then sent me a gift card covering the purchase amount. As in any situation know what your buying and deal only with reputable dealers
Very knowledgeable staff. Lots of choices
Ive bought my deck/porch stain at Capitol every three years since 1998. Great service each and every time.
Always good service
Any kind of lumber needs, they got it! If its hard to find they probably have it.
Always helpful
Great selection of hardwood lumber
Always great service.
Great selection
Great service.
Wood
Staff doesnt seem to want to help if youre not a contractor.
Always good.
