Cool store with a very friendly staff. Used section is limited and pretty pricey compared to others in the area. Awesome place if you are looking for new records.
My go-to spot for vinyl here in Raleigh. Friendly & helpful staff...fair prices. Selection could be better but between both locations they try to do what they can to find what youre looking for.
Its pretty good I wish the CDs were organized better I couldnt find anything
Love this shop! Always able to find something I like at a great price. And if they dont have what you are looking for, the people who work there are always friendly and will try to order what you want. I seldom leave empty-handed because they have such a great selection across all styles of music. Lots of vinyl and tons of cds. No music lover should miss shopping here!
I will be honest its a good store but the mystery bags are not that good. If you guys at least put in some good albums from well known artists Ill give you guys 5 stars.
I love this place! The staff is laid back and helpful! I really enjoyed perusing the releases for Record Store Day (6.12.21)! I found some gems! Ill be back soon!
Its a record store lol. Inventory is in a good rotation, new releases every Friday, and the staff is super helpful and knowledgeable. Prices are reasonable and match current markets for albums. They also have good deals on pre-owned DVDs and Blu-Ray discs.
Great selection of cds and records. Be sure to check out the bargain bin!
Employees will not greet you or ask if you need any help. They only talk to each other and act like youre not there.
Great shop with a cast collection of genres and artists. Vinyl, CD, cassette tapes and Dvd can all be purchased here. New and used though, the new outweighs the old. New arrivals are on the front left of the store.
Love this place. This is the best place I have found for hard to find vinyl.
Great selection.I had an issue with a broken double cd box and the guy looked thru his complete inventory to replace it. Nice service !
Huge selection of an almost extinct form of media, CDs.
I seems like used to be a great place of local cultural significance. I love to collect records, and try so hard to find things there to buy, but it never happens. I feel like they are so focused to their own musical tastes they neglect a big part of the market. Their used selection rarely changes, at least in the types of records I purchase, and only occasionally have new ones I am interested in. I guess if you are onto rock and/or roll give it a shot otherwise skip it. I admire them for what they are doing, but get some varied inventory.
Over priced on almost everything. A hipster record shop. They have a lot of records though.
Great place to buy some vinyl and buying some used CDs
Records. Music. Nuff sed.
When ya just have to have it !
Great selection of established and new artists. If they dont have it thell get it.
Excellent inventory and friendly staff.
This place is awesome. This and Nice Price Books are the only spots with good albums in the Raleigh area. Now that they have some taps its also a good hangout spot. The selection is excellent and if they dont have something they will order it for you at no extra cost for you.
Poor selection of overpriced records. They didnt have anything at all by Louis Armstrong, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, blink-182, Green Day, NOFX, Rancid, Nirvana, or any other names I was looking for. Yeesh.
I am assuming that their selection works for their usual clientele. I spend about an hour there a few times a year and rarely find anything worth buying, personally.
Always has a large section of vinyl and cds but prices are very high for most. Atmosphere seems to always be rambunctious with the staff and some regulars that are partaking in a few beers (they have a liquor license and only serve beer). Overall if you are looking for vinyl you can probably find something there, always check the clearance section for some decent deals.
Was visiting some friends from OH and stopped in to check this place out. Most new albums were a bit overpriced from my experience, but I did find 2 that were reasonable. In my experiences, if a place is selling used albums they generally clean the old dust and fingerprints off, which wasnt the case. The staff member was very kind and helpful while we were there.
I have been record collecting for a long time now and every time I have gone here I find something great at a decent price. I also thought the staff was courteous and extremely kind and helpful every visit.
Went in the other night and was ignored entirely by staff. The woman was chatting with friends which I wouldnt normally mind until I needed assistance and couldnt get a word in. Also, when I was leaving, shortly after realizing I wasnt going to be helped, I was stopped because she was kissing a guy in the door way... a very awkward experience for me to say the least. The selection and prices in my opinion left something to be desired as well. Ive been to Sorry State Records in Raleigh and had a great experience - so my business will stay there. I try to shop locally (as much as one can) and Im new to the area. This just wasnt a good experience at all.Side Note: The music they had playing was good.
Sub par selection. Poor layout. Pretentious staff that wont acknowledge you unless youve a beard and a craft beer shirt on. Pretty much what Id expect out of a record store in the south.
Love the selection here!
Mediocre variety of genres, slightly unorganized, and a sometimes condescending to an outright pompous staff. One star lost due to my experience regarding some staff members who are very condescending and appear bothered if you ask questions. For example, I asked about electronic genres and was instructed that the online selection may have more material. When I asked what formats the music on the online store were in from another employee, this employee threw his hands up and loudly exclaimed that he didnt know anything about it and encouraged me to just check it out (undoubtedly preferring to socialize rather then help out customers). Staff scheduled on the weekend are generally a bit more helpful and friendlier in my opinion.Another star lost due to somewhat poor store organization. If you know what genre youre inquiring about and said genre is fairly mainstream such as alternative, rock-and-roll, hip-hop, etc., then by all means shop here. Otherwise, it may help to seek out other stores in the area.
I really would like to support my local independent record store. However, my experiences over the last year have left me wishing for more. More selection, more attention to the customer. I have been in a couple of times on record release day looking for new releases on CD. Each time they have not had the albums for which I was searching. They said they would take my name and phone number and give me a call when it came in. On each occasion no call was made. I ended up buying the releases direct from the record label. I miss the days of going into one of the Schoolkids Records, even when they were in Wilmington and I was a teenager, and looking through a vast selection of music. I am ultimately disappointed and cant see myself going back anytime soon.
Place is a joke, no idea what direction they went after their move.Rude employees, horrible selection, bad quality for high prices. Kids screaming and a bar?Cramped little hole in the wall, joke ...
A part of Raleigh history! I remember going to Schoolkids Records back in the 80s when I first moved to Raleigh NC and it was on Hillsboro street. We would take in records to get credit and find gems to bring home. I am so impressed they have hung in so long from 8-tracks, cassettes, record albums and now CDs (with records). The chain started here in 1973 and it a true local owned and operated place to visit if you come to Raleigh. Rock on Schoolkids!
School Kids use to be a great place to buy vinyl until they changed ownership and over charge for used vinyl! I always recommend buying local but sometimes its smarter to buy online or visit other local stores.
Great prices for new records, and they have lots of free posters and stickers!! They also have a great selection of used records for 99 cents to ~$3
I am and have been an avid record collector and supporter of local music stores for many years now. Schoolkids Records used to be my go-to for used vinyl and cds, etc. But not anymore.Recently I visited Schoolkids to once again be sadly reminded of how much this place has gone downhill. Used records are what youd see at your typical Goodwill, only more exorbitantly priced. The only albums worth my interest during this visit were a handful of Metallica albums that were WAY overpriced (I could get the same albums elsewhere for 1/4th of the prices found here). Appalling! Shame on you, Schoolkids! You are ripping your customers off with these INSANE prices! To make matters worse, the obnoxious clerk working there was unapologetically playing Coheed & Cambria! Really?! I used to come here to discover new, exciting music from your staff and I get this?? Come on, man...I miss the old Schoolkids. But Im afraid its not coming back. Neither will I.
They RIPPED OFF my young daughter. She gave them 15 CDs, they gave her ONE DOLLAR. They are dishonest crooks. My young daughter learned a lesson from them. I will be paying them a visit to have a talk with them. You are better off to donate your old CDs to a good charity store.
Today was my first visit to School Kids. I walked in shortly after they opened and I went up to the counter with a few questions. Without looking up the store employee dropped the needle on a Beastie Boys record, edged up the volume and turned his back to me without saying a word. Nice,I decided to look around anyway. The store is as unimpressive as their customer service. The used vinyl section is standard flea market fare with max eBay pricing. New vinyl is limited to the dozen or so recent releases on a display near the front door, left over Record Day offerings and other stuff that did not sell from last year. The store is cluttered, disorganized mess. However, the counter employee does know the words to quite a few Beastie Boys songs.Unless youre bored or dont have a high opinion of yourself, Id recommend bypassing this place all together. There a lot of excellent and professionally staffed record stores within a short drive if this one.
Best Used and New Vinyl Shop in the Area! They have great attitudes, the selection is always on point, and you feel appreciated and welcome from the moment you walk in. I recommend this shop to everyone!
Got my daughter a schoolkids logo sweatshirt - she likes it a lot, tho shes never been to NC.
Nice place if you know what you are looking for. Dont expect anyone to help you though.
Not the biggest vinyl selections, but not bad for the size of the store. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Terrible customer service. The employee behind the counter seemed very entitled/pretentious. He wasnt helpful at all. He also continued to drink 3 beers within the 15 minutes that we were there, and browsing the internet. Dont get me wrong, Im down with drinking, but do your damn job.
Okay selection, nice employees
A good old Raleigh record store definitely worth a visit.
I have been there several times and very disappointed in their customer service and their prices.I am a Raleigh local and I used love the place but I dont what has happened!Worst place to sell to also.....
The selection is horrible
Love that this place is still around! Please keep it alive and patronize this local record shop!
Decent selection, but the old location had way more personality. Still worth a stop!
Great selection and prices
My hometown record store, and one of the few like it left in the region.
Cool spot.
Dollar Bin records in abundance....
I did not like this record store.
🤘🏻👍🏻
