I know the person that owns this shop will respond to this saying how uneducated I am for giving a low rating. If that is what makes them feel better about themselves so be it. Must be sad living a life so shallow. As you can see below, the owner is a verysad person who must belittle others to compensate for their lack of a life.
This guy needs to change his business model fast or there will be no businessQuite insulted by the way I was greeted to enter the storeYou must buy a drink to come in? I look like I can afford it? I’ve been to over 300 comic stores but I guess this guy wants $3 from me instead of my comic collecting moneyFoolish business model and very insulting approachThis isn’t a museum and I’m not buying a soda I don’t want to drink in order to shopTerrible customer experience, even worst idea
Been here a few times before I moved to OB permanently. Just went in last week and the owner was extremely nice, answered any of my comic book questions and he had a very good selection of soda. You have to buy a soda to enter, covid times are weird and he is just doing what he has to do to get by. Places like this rarely exist anymore and the fact this place still rents movies is amazing. They also have a nice little selection of arcade games. Now that it is just around the block from me I will frequent this location all the time.
HAHA love seeing this guy respond to know-it-all window shoppers. On a more serious note, about a year ago I went to this same store wondering if this was going to be a comic exclusive shop, and lo and behold, some of the best tasting sodas Ive ever tasted, and to my surprise, a sizable Manga selection to choose from. Knew I had to buy once I saw the soul put into the place. Service was great and I cant wait to go back.
Comic book shop/craft soda bar with a small arcade and members only DVD rental. My favorite place in OB that doesnt sell alcohol
I’m not from California and I love to go to different comic shops. I travel a lot over the U.S. My brother and I decided to stop by this comic shop while on vacation. Unfortunately this was a very bad experience as we were not allowed inside without first having to purchase a drink. The owner then talked down on my brother and I like we were dumb. If I was you I would not visit this store as the owner is much worse then a millennial.
Rude.Dirty inside and only offered a small selection of sodas, not that they even would let us inside. Also, apparently they enjoy adding lies to their google reviews?I’d love to add pictures of myself but I am quite clean and well kept, and have never been denied service for being “a hippie”Didnt even get the clothes I was wearing correctBut I guess you can make up anything these days.
While it is easily understood that many small businesses have suffered during Covid, forcing a drink purchase as a cover charge is shady business practice. This could have been forgiven has there been more of a selection. The shop also smelled quite moldy. I would not recommend. It should be noted that this is one of the rare times I have felt compelled to write a review of a business on google. Even more so as I am not normally confrontational, and do not want to hurt someones livelyhood. However, the level of disappointment with this sketchy place has compelled me to do so.
Amazing selection of comics for cheap prices. Always something new to read and classics are available too.
Back in January I took my daughter down to Ocean Breach. It had been well over a year since I had visited the area. She was excited to patron the local comic book shop as it was recommended by a friend. Unfortunately, we were not permitted to enter without purchasing a beverage. The owner sited COVID regulations. Oddly enough we had already shopped in several of the other stores without such issue. The owner was quite rude and unprofessional. From the entrance we could see that the store was rather dank and not worth fussing over. My daughter did however write a review on Google maps that day. Nearly two months late the owner replied. The owner must make a habit of turning people away as he referenced a completely different patron and her friend in his repugnant reply. Regardless of the of the individual he was referring to, as a business owner his response was revolting and unprofessional. There has been an obvious influx of transients to the Ocean Beach area. That being said, it is still poor business to trash talk potential patrons. For anyone considering this establishment I recommend looking elsewhere. Do not reward the disturbing practices of this establishment.
Dave is great. Wide variety of comics, movies, games, and gourmet sodas
Love Galactic Comics, Huge inventory classic store. I spend a lot of money here and its worth every penny. tons of unique items, Dave the owner is very knowledgeable and has located unique items for me. Who doesnt love comic books?
Great place to spend some time.
Located a few minutes from the beach, Galactic Comics is a welcome break from baking in sun. Offering a wide assortment of American and Japanese comics, it’s definitely worth a trip for aficionados. Add in a funky mix of video, sticker, and toy machines and you’ve got a great deal.
Stopped by today to check out the place and the service was excellent, kids were happy and the guy answered all of our questions and gave the kids fun facts about a lot of the vintage and current products!! Thank you!!!
When i walked in the entire place smelled like feet and gamer stench. the cashier was eating takis and got dust on my limited edition watchmen action figure
Great comic selection, great craft soda selection, and the owner is super cool!
Wow. I can’t really review the complete shop since I wouldn’t pay them for the privilege to actually come inside and shop. That’s right. You have to purchase one of their bottle sodas in order to actually go into the store to shop. What I can say of the outside is the entrance is surrounded by coin op machines covered in grime on the dirty front entrance way. The handwritten sign telling you to wait at the door for someone is barely legible. The inside from what I saw was just as dirty as the outside.
Great place. Very helpful. Wonderful prices.
This place is amazing for eclectic collectibles. It also has vintage video games and vending machines. Get all your comic books, cartoon, and superhero stuff here and in good shape. Bring lots of quarters, they have a quarter machine if you need.
They force you to a buy sodas just tu be able to shop around.
Found a couple hard to find books. Friendly staff. Cool Store. Dont care much for OB but thats my only knock. Id go back for sure.
Dont go here. First of all the man running the shop claimed to be an old soda shop, despite the sign clearly stating it was a comic shop, and said I had to by something before I could in due to covid. If its that bad than shut down. Then the man was extremely rude and made a sexist comment about how if I waned to shop that I should go to Target. The shop itself it dingy and cluttered.
Stopped by to see if they had any vintage video games as my fiancé and I collect them. Owner was incredibly rude and told us some complicated policy where we had to go to some cafe he also owns and order a drink there and come back in order to see what games he had. When we turned around to leave because that was way too complicated just to buy some games he yelled at us to go to Target up the street. Not quite sure how you run a business like that.
You got to pay to go in a comic book store just to get in for a drink i say they should shut down the store for good
You can rent movies here way better selection than red box. Years and years of movies on hand! Best comic book store in town!
Great place. You can find an amazing selection of comics. And if they dont have it they will put an special order for you.
After long 12 hour shifts and stressful days I could turn to this amazing shop after a day at the beach. Great prices, great merchandise and amazing staff I couldnt not look forward to going there more and now that Im out of state I cant help but miss it and if you are a comic nerd ots a reason to visit San Diego in its self
Is it your dream to visit a comic shop that literally has comics all the way up to the ceiling? Then you have found Valhalla! But, for me, this place lost its charm when the original owner left. That and I have no real desire to spend hours shuffling through towering piles of comics to find what I want.
Had a blast so much that my friend left his backpack with valuables in it and it was stored safely by the owner. Very much appreciated! Comic On!!
Its a decent comic shop. A little tight on the isles, but the selection is super good.
Ive been utilizing the great service Galactic Comics has been offering. Where you can request any title and have it be placed in your box. Each month or so Ill go in and grab every Star Wars comic thats been printed, 1st edition, great condition and easy. The service is great, loccation is awesome and the staff is friendly.
The best comic shop around! It’s got a huge selection of new and old comics. From collecting arcade cabinets to keeping current with stories, this place has it all
This is a fun store to stop in if you are walking along Newport and enjoy comics. Every comic is marked up at least a dollar which is so dumb. 3.99 and 4.99 comics seem to all be marked at 5.50. So they are taxing the hell out of you. The new release wall or lack there of is weak! And dont expect to find any variants of the new release youve been waiting for. They mostly have a somewhat large selection of back dated comics.Would not recommend to anyone looking for new releases. Also would not drive to location. If you are looking for a good mom and pop shop with lots of new releases, and an array of back dated comics, small press and lots of variants. At a great price and price as marked on new releases, try Comickaze comics a few miles away on Clairemont mesa road exit the 805 west.
Cool place with functional vintage pinball machines in the very back. Small spot but endless things to look at
A shop where every nook and cranny is a trip to Back In the Day. . . Theres a little bit for everyone, here: back issues, old-school action figures, arcade game booths similar to the old Neo-Geo multi-game consoles. Like I said: something for every geeky predilection. If youre in the area, its definitely worth a stop!
Great place to play arcade games, rent a movie, and buy comics.
Not a fan of the selection of comic books here. Lots of outliers but not much in the way of popular current comics. Also the aesthetic of the store was too busy for my taste, and the only person working there largely ignored my whole group, likely suspecting we wouldnt buy anything.
Large location, PACKED with comics, DVD rentals, arcade games, and other collectibles.Galactic Comics suffers from the old school comic book shop/antique store mentality that a successful location is one that is completely packed with marked up treasures. At this point, its not clear what Galactic Comics wants to be anymore. Are you a place to rent DVDs? Play arcade games? Browse comics? Its certainly not a place thats welcoming for geeks to hang out.PROPS: Theres a mountain of inventory here, and its very possible that you may find a diamond in this rough.SLOPS: While organized well, the stock isnt cared for. Many of the comics and collectibles are far from mint condition.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff! Its always nice to pop in to play some arcade games, too, it almost makes me wish they were open later on weekends.
I would rate them a one star based on customer service, the cashier was rude and judgmental from the first glance walking in the store, kept peeking and staring my friend and I while picking out items in the store and when going to the register to pay for my belongings asked why I was even willing to pay for what I wanted. So I politely left the store. I wouldnt recommend them to anyone and will not return for future purchases.
Sweet plsce
I really enjoyed this place. Wide selection of comics. Tons of toys. I didnt rent movies, but they had a lot of them. Fun spot in OB.
Had such a great time here (came a little stoned), spent a couple quarters, and walked down memory lane 💫
The kids love coming here!
This place is truly one of the Hidden gems of Ocean Beach! If youre into any and all things nerdy this is your spot.
This is the worst comic book store Ive ever been to. And Ive been to a bunch of them everything here was so unorganized everything was mixed in that. Graphic novels or mixed in with regular Comics I found a few issues that were folded in their stacks. Very crowded. Just a horrible environment to be looking for comic books. Never coming back ever.
No photos? Okay... Dont expect me to come back
This is a classic old school video and comic shop. The folx are very helpful and knowledgeable.
Pricey, but this is one of the last true comic book stores. For nostalgia alone, visit Galactic Comics and get the sense of where you shopped as a child.
Awesome and helpful staff, great selection of comics, movies, and newly added arcade games!
Good assortment of anything comics book related!
If you like comics go here
Pretty good selection, and the proprietor understands the market.
The owner of Galactic Comics on Newport Ave in Ocean Beach violently attacked and beat me for pinching him on St. Patricks Day. I announce that I was going to pinch him. He smiled. I took that as an invitation so I walked around him one way then the other, giving him ample time to tell me not to. Then I announced, Yep, youre not wearing any green. At this point I pinched him playfully on the arm and began to walk away. He hit me in the side of the head near the back and it caught me so off guard that he actually knocked me, the master of balance, to the ground. (Not surprising. He was much larger than me.) Then as I hit the ground my juggling swords slid out of my backpack (Im a performer, and am supposed to have juggling swords. I was not breaking any laws). The guy then began to kick me while I was down. All the while yelling, Tweeker, Bum, Troll which I am none of and did not even slightly resemble. He connected with my $700 Samsung Galaxy S5 and destroyed it leaving a phone shaped bruise on my leg. Then he connected to my ribs leaving another gnarly bruise. He then changed positions and tried to kick me in the face, but I was too fast and managed to narrowly avoid getting kicked. I grabbed up my stuff that had fallen out of my bag and ran down the street to meet up with my friends at the sushi place. I thought that was the end of it. I pinched him and he beat the ish out of me and broke my phone. Fair right? Well, that wasnt the end of it. He also decided it would be a good idea to call the police. So after lunch I was performing when one of the local OB cops came up and tapped me on the shoulder, Mr. Staffa, we need to talk to you about an incident that happened in front of the Comic Book Shop. He then went on to say that he knew me and had no issues with me or my swords and in fact liked me and what I do in OB. I explained what happened and in the end he explained that the Owner of the comic book shop had originally admitted that I pinched him, but had then changed his story to say that I had tried to stab him. The officer knew that that was not me or my MO and in the end he gave me the right to press charges on the Comic Book Shop owner. I declined, stating that I would press charges if the shop owner continued to carry on his charade. The cops helped end the situation, but after a weekend of having to perform in a lot of pain I kind of wish I had pressed charges. And I realized after the fact he was yelling Tweeker, Bum, Troll! That kind of makes what he was doing a hate crime. Anyway, it has now been a week and I still show visible injuries. Do not shop at Galactic Comic! Boycott Agro-Violence! Only we can remove the negative from our environment. Thank you for reading. Please share this with everyone!
Was not impressed prices were cover value.
Its a nice place.
Fun shop with great owner.
One stop shop. In OB.
Zero stars for customer service, the guy that worked there was being judgemental, and rude so he lost his customers.
What a ripoff.its my fault for letting you steal from me.
Fun comic book Shop. Merchandise is a little expensive but then it is by a beach.
Nice spot
Last Video rental standing!!
Not for the comic selection, but for the pinball machine, arcade games, and the best quarter machines full of stickers, snap bracelets, and figurines out front.
So many old school things you cant find at the newer comic stores now a days #retro
This place is an oasis
Awesome
