This shop and crew are the real deal. We were visting from Canada and my son and I wanted to hit the Flow Trail. I gave Cycle Works a ring and spoke to Stirling the owner, he set us up with a couple Kona Process and took us to the Soquel Demonstration Trail Head. We spent the afternoon ripping up the trails with Stirling and his mates - it was a super terrific day!Great guys, great bikes and great time!
I came into the shop about a month ago looking to buy a new bike. I came in looking for something I could take out Wilder Ranch and UCSC trails. I was originally looking for a gravel bike with drop bars and asked the person at the front desk. They had some Kona (Roves?) that the friendly gentleman at the front desk took down from the top rack and let me test ride it. I took it for a spin and was pleased with it, but I wanted to see what they had for handrail mountain bikes. I know that Santa Cruz has lots of good mountain bike trails and wanted something suited for a beginner but was capable. I was then directed to a Kona Blast, and after learning about the bike from the knowledgeable front desk mechanic, I took it for a test ride. The bike was fun, light, and I was very pleased with it.I had been to another shop closer to me and I didnt like anything they had at the store. This is when I took to Reddit and saw Cycle works was recommended by some locals. The mechanic took my bike back to the shop and did a once over to verify everything was working properly with my new bike I was about to purchase. They even aired up the front forks to the PSI suited for my weight.I took my new bike to Wilder Ranch and started putting some miles on the bike. I had the mountain biking bug and started meeting friends on the trail. Eventually I started riding more technical trails, and eventually, I crashed my bike hitting the brakes too hard on a turn. A week or so later I noticed some noise coming from my bike. A quick inspection revealed my rear wheel was not true.I took the bike in and spoke with one of the mechanics, who said theyd have my bike in and out in thirty minutes or so. I asked the mechanic about truing wheels and he was very helpful and knowledgeable. He explained the process to me in clear understandable terms.I took my bike out the day after getting the wheel trued and noticed the drivetrain was making noise while shifting. I brought the bike back into the shop. I had bent the derailleur hanger when I crashed the bike. I had the bike back within two hours and took the bike out on a fourteen mile ride the next day. The bike was shifting flawlessly.I cannot recommend this shop enough, based on the bike and accessory selection, and the excellent customer service and technical expertise provided by the service department. As someone who works in a technical role with non technical users, I cannot commend enough the ability for the service department to kindly and non judgingly provide expert advice to someone ignorant to the intracacies of bicycle mechanics. The service room even has stools for you to observe and talk to the mechanics while they are servicing your bike. All of the mechanics are friendly and helpful. This shop has had 3-4 bicycle mechanics working every time I have visited, meaning they can turn around any small issues in a half hour or less. I do not fear I will have to wait two weeks to get my bike back from this shop. The rapor and mood of the mechanics is very welcoming and open. No elitism or condescension like I have received at other bike shops.I will be returning to Cycle Works for all of my bike needs, even though they are not the closest bike shop to me. The service department makes a bike shop, and the service department at this bike shop makes it a bike shop, and not just a bike store or dealer.
Great shop, helpful staff. I was having trouble setting up a tubeless tire and they gave a bunch of useful pointers.
Great employees, super friendly and helpful. Nice bikes (Hanzo and Rove, both Kona), and some really great shop dogs. A very nice bike shop with good bike shop vibes.
Ive lived a lot of places and become friendly with a lot of shops, Im going to go out on a limb and say that CycleWorks is hands down the most grounded and welcoming shop Ive ever been in.Bike shops arent just storefronts, theyre hubs where culture and community live and die. In a place like Santa Cruz its really easy to keep people on the outside and be elitists. Its way harder to welcome everyone in regardless of skill and knowledge. Culture starts from the top and Stirling the owner sets a pretty great example of how to have a service oriented and professional shop while still trying to keep things loose enough for everyone to have fun in the margins. They stock a pretty diverse and interesting set of bikes and parts which is saying something in the days of templated cookie cutter stores that just sell one brand of mediocre stuff. As for the service, all the mechanics take their projects super seriously. The level of detail is very high, and I can testify that I have fully satisfied with all the work theyve done for me (which is not something I can say for anywhere else).Competition breeds excellence and there are 5 other bike shops just on the Westside of Santa Cruz. Theyre all pretty darn good which makes it even more impressive that CycleWorks blows them out of the water.
Cool shop, knowledgeable staff, good selection at comparable prices. I called a bunch of bike shops in town and went here for my tires and seat.
Awesome crew here! Incredibly welcoming to everyone, even those not apart of the ‘local scene’!
The customer service is excellent!! My husband and I went in to check out possibly purchasing mountain bikes. We arrived about 15 minutes before closing and Colin was so helpful and knowledgeable!! He did not rush us and gave us enough info for us to buy our bikes. We love them and highly recommend this shop and the staff!!
These guys are sick! We rented hardtails for $40/day and rode the Empire grade down pipeline to U conn to Emma- perfect half day adventure and Cycleworks crew are friendly and helpful - explained the whole route for us...Ivan was funny and super patient! We rode Giants, returned them a little past closing, they said no problem because we will be hanging around drinking a beer... tons of good tips and nice guys, including a big dog that likes peanut butter...
Faith again in old school bike shop vibe, service orientation . Beer on the counter - next to the coffee counter. Everybody elseSays mid July Syrling says put it on the rack and take care of business! My kind of bike shop. Makes me want to ride hard core which tomorrow I will! So much forMid July thanks again u guys rock -
Only bike shop in Santa Cruz that doesnt treat you like skum for not dropping $4000 on a bike same day.
Best customer service in town (on multiple occasions now)! Will definitely be back for any future bike needs.
I guess paying $215 for a new cassette to be installed on my mountain bike doesnt include a couple turns on my front derailleur to make shift correctly. WOW!When I got back to the shop I was told I didnt pay for that partThat cost $5 extra.I asked them why wouldnt you offer me the $5 derailleur adjustment? Why would you let someone take home a bike that doesnt work?.Its really hard for me to write a bad review because of one guy in the shop but I had to.This guy new I fixed up bikes & sell them to make a little extra money for my household.I guess he doesnt like the competition.Whenever I sell a bike I always tell the person thats buying the bike where I get the work done. Not this time!.
These guys are amazing!! I walked in thinking my tour was over based on what another local shop told me but they took the time to really look for my part and even manufactured one that was close to make it work so I could continue. Thank you so much for your amazing service and knowledge.
So friendly and helpful. They didn’t have the size frame I needed to rent so they took a new bike off the wall and let me take that one. They are a great group of people and I would rent or buy there again.
Sterling and the crew are the best! Great people, great service just amazing all the way around! This is a true family bike shop! The night rides are awesome!!!
Super helpful and nice. And an adorable pupper in residence to boot! 💖
These guys know their stuff. I had broken a bolt off in my spindle, these guys drilled it out and had it good to go in no time. Mind you, I was looking for either a spindle or a crankset from Santa Cruz to the south bay to online with no luck. I finally got to ride today because of the people at Cycle Works. Thank you.
One of the most approachable and friendly shops I have been to anywhere in the world. Very knowledgeable and just a flat out rad shop. Kudos boys!
Support your local bike shop! When I was in the market for a new bike I considered a direct to consumer brand. But I was apprehensive because Ive heard of the customer support nightmares. Not to mention right now the bike market per covid is super stressed for availability on bikes and parts. After getting a Kona Process 134 was setting it up tubless at home and when it came to the rear wheel I mistook the hanger bolt for the through axel and got things siezed up. The manager Stirling and technician Felipe with their kind hearts and understanding were able to help me get the replacement parts needed to get this bike back on the trail. From the bottom of my heart I give great thanks and humble gratitude. Stay safe everyone and go ride your bike!
Highest recommend! This place is awesome. Super friendly, and they rent stellar bikes that are perfectly dialed for a shockingly good price. Will come back again with no hesitation.
High quality bikes at a reasonable price. I got their mid-range hardtail mountain bikes that rides like a charm, theyre well-maintained and revised before you take them. You pay for the hours you actually use the bike, no need to pre-pay for a full day in advance. Friendly staff too. And they offer helmets for free. Definitely coming back next time I visit SC!
Cycle Works rock! Very friendly and eager to help with the littlest issues with no waiting. My business is with them.
Good selection. Very knowledgeable staff.
Great service! My brake cables snapped when I was commuting home from work. I walked my bike right in and they fixed my brakes right then and there at a decent price. You can also have a beer while you wait! Thanks guys, you did a great job!
Quick and easy rental experience.Me and wife rented casual MTB (hard-tail) bikes.Quality of bikes was good as well.
Was, at first, impressed with quick service, now regretting my choice. Tires are barely two weeks old from here front one is popped already from normal daily riding (no pot holes or damage). The inflation port bent and broke off after one pump. Super cheap terrible product. Disappointed with the service. Oh, and they sold me a pump that didnt even fit the inflation port on the bike tube. Might as well have flushed $70+ down the toilet. [Edit] Id love to come back in but since I live 200+ miles away its not worth the effort. [Second edit]. I have to apologize and take back what I said. So I went to another shop and got new tubes and those popped as well within days of purchase. After looking closely at the actual wheel frame it turns out that my wheels themselves had a slight lip that was bent and that would eventually puncture any tube so I apologize for the poor review and have changed it from 1 star to 5 as the rest of the service was good despite the pump. I know how much these reviews mean to a business so I am hoping that rather than deleting my comment I can explain what happened and can undo any harm I may have caused. Sincerest apologies.
Nice group of guys. Helpful with the bike demo rental. The setup was great; shock sag and shifting were spot on. Forgot to adjust the seatpost, but I carried my hex key tool and took care of that on the trail.
Awesome place to rent a couple bikes and venture around. Staff was informative yet super chill. Had a beer tap in the joint too👍🏼 Will definitely be back
Great shop! Brought my SC Nomad in for rear shock and front fork in for rebuild and service. They got it done in 1 day and cleaned the whole bike up as well. Both front and rear were super buttery and smooth like new again.Best shop for bike service in SC hands down!!!Also, just saw a bad review on here and if you read it, you need to completely disregard it as the issues the customer had is completely user error.
This place is awesome!!! Great selection and they let us use there bathroom during covid, nice guys!!!!
Got a lot of help and learned a lot from the owner. Ordered me some new tires and is going to set them up tubeless for me cheap.
Best bike shop in Santa Cruz, hands down. They have helped me countless times with small repairs and tunes without any of the condescension that comes from other shops if you dont have a ton of money to spend. Taylor got me in and out this morning WHILE I was on my morning commute. Cant say enough about these guys. Truly a bike shop for the people. They understand that if you provide good honest service then people will tell their friends and come back and spend money!
This is without a doubt the best bike shop I have ever came across in my entire life...anywhere! From all the five star reviews, you dont have to take my word for it.
Awesome staff, great prices and quick
Best Bike Shop and repair in Santa Cruz County. Also had a great rental experience with then. Rentals come with a helmet and a lock. They fit the bike to the rider and do all the adjustments needed to fit the bike to you. Highly recommend them.
Cycle Works took great care of us. We were a walk in and they rented us 4 cruisers and suggested a route along the shore. It was a wonderful bike ride and we loved it!
Very helpful bike shop. Ivan helped me with a number a questions I had about my road bike. They have a fine selection of items in store at great prices. They were quick and easy when I rented out mountain bikes for an afternoon ride.
Took me right in and replaced my brake pads just like that - great job great price - can even have a Discretion beer on tap while you watch them work! Great work guys!
Great shopping experience, friendly staff and very knowledgeable.
This place is the best. Stirling and Hanna are super helpful. I wanted to get a bike that was comfortable for my back and they helped me figure out something that fit me just right. Whenever people come to town I tell them to go here to get their rental bikes because they have a lot of different kinds of bikes to rent.
Coming from Tahoe for a few days, I rode Wilder Ranch and the University today (1st ever for any ride in SC) but I took Taylors recommendation for which trails to try out---had an amazing time and definitely puts your skills and endurance to the test. This guy knows the trails out here. Upon returning from the ride, had the pleasure to meet Jason who was just as amazing as Taylor---he washed my bike, lubed up the chain, and stored the bike inside out of courtesy while I ran across the street for a quick bite. These guys are the best and I will be returning when I can make it down here again!
I booked the bike 2 weeks ahead. When I arrived at 9am they were not found. Took an hour to get a different bike, more aggressive and hard to pedal. The chainring was too large and they couldnt replace it. In addition dropper was faulty at the shop, and stopped working in the middle of the trail.I got a serious discount but that doesnt compensate for a beautiful ride ruined.
Great shop, best prices in town..... consistent and fast service. Thats what its all about. Good stuff guys!
They replaced a rear inner tube while a waited for just 5 dollars. I asked for advice on a replacement for a broken front derailleur and they took the time to lay out the best options. Overall I got the impression that they really wanted to make sure I got the best parts and service to match my budget and needs. They really like bikes and it was fun talking to them!
Awesome crew at Cycle Works Santa Cruz! We are from Australia road trippin the states with our bikes and these guys helped us out big time with some awesome advice on the local trails and even gave us a shuttle!!! Thanks for the ride! Ash and Chris
Super friendly and capable staff. Good selection of Kona bikes, among others.
Need to rent full-suspension MTB to tackle some Trail around Santa Cruz and their services were top notch ! Large selection of bikes, and they take the time to set it up well for you! Would go back again !!
Epic ride on a great bike. The guys at Cycleworks are very helpful and made sure the bike was properly set up for me. No surprises on the rental.
Super easy and fast service . Gave us good directions to where we should go to enjoy a good ride. Included helmet in the price which was very reasonable . They also gave us the upgraded bikes for a lower price :) we will be back .
Such a great place. The people that work there are so helpful. I came out with a lot of knowledge about bikes and perfect bike.
Cycle Works has a great friendly crew and they always do their best to accommodate
Cycle Works has a great variety of bicycles, not only that but the staff are very friendly and will help you with anything you might have questions about. Overall this bike shop is very unique and i would definetely reccommend it to anybody. They also let you demo a certain bike if you wanted to test it which is a great thing if youre looking to purchase a bike, but maybe youre not sure how it rides. Well what else can i say? Stop on by and check out this sweet shop!
Honestly a terrible and sad experience here. I purchased a bike from the demo fleet believing that it would have been maintained and in good enough shape to ride. I was mistaken and was actually delivered a bike that was so far in disrepair that as soon as you stepped on the peddles the chain fell off the wheel. The chainring was so worn and missing teeth it would not grab the chain and continuously fell off. Derailleur also bent and spring broken. After all this I asked that the cost to fix the bike be covered so that I could ride and I was flat out denied and told I should have known because it was a “used” bike. SAD
This shop is the best. Taylor really knows how to take care of his customers. I will keep going back for sure.
This shop is from riders, for riders.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff, skilled mechanics, and the best prices in town. Easily the best bike shop in Santa Cruz.
Awesome place, Super friendly staff, Thumb up to Irwin
The shop feels a bit daunting at first but the staff are genuine, try really hard and the prices for bike rentals are unbeatable.
Great service. Nice people who love biking.
I rented a Kona Process 153, it was really well maintained, the service was friendly and the rate ($60) was really good given you could have the bike from opening to close. The beer in the workshop at the end really put the cherry on top though!
Great price and great ride!! Loved the cruisers!
Sprockets staff are always so friendly and make you feel really comfortable. Compared to other bike shops in SC this one has the best prices, the best atmosphere, and I will continue to be a loyal customer!
Good service, good prices, but rental bikes are not maintened well.
After their grand opening last June, Cycle Works has quickly become arguably the most welcoming and community oriented bike shop in town. The owner Stirling is a seasoned mechanic and well versed in the workings of the bike industry. His entire staff are bike enthusiasts, eager to help you however they can without coming off like salesmen. The service section of the shop doubles a customer lounge with a redwood bar table and stools where you can have a beer while the mechanics work their magic on your bike. On that note, they also host a number of BBQs, demos, and group shuttle events for customers during the year in partnership with Cyclepath Outfitters! So, whether youre a seasoned mountain bike shredder, roadie watt machine, coffee shop commuter, or a newbie on a budget whos feeling a little bike-curious, make sure you stop by Cycle Works soon! No nonsense, no elitism, just good bike people. Cheers!
Great staff and great quality bikes for rent.
Great people, well maintained and top notch bikes for reasonable prices
Best customer service, badass bikes, godlike prices
Fast, friendly, quality, and Beer on tap!!
Question do you guys have big rippers by any chance ?
Great bike shop! Found the tire I needed!
Super great service, I went in just to borrow a tire pump and they pumped my tires for me for free and I got a bike seat and they put that on too for no charge at all!
Knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and not pushy. Will go back for sure
Friendly and knowledgeable staff that can provide great advice regardless of your budget.
You will find great people here
