Had to delete my old review and post a new one, since the old Epic Cafe is now Cafe Maggie. Also posting several pictures as many of the other photos posted here are no longer accurate.I was there on a Sunday morning and there were just a few patrons. The atmosphere is casual, relaxing and spacious. The menu is simple with an assortment of main dishes and pastries. I had the quiche and a latte. Both were delicious and reasonably priced. Although this place isn’t super close to where I live, I’m definitely looking forward to returning.
My favorite coffee shop in Tucson so far. The baked goods were excellent, the quiche was fantastic, and I had a most excellent decaf white mocha tiger. The next day I wanted to go back and do it again and would have if it wasnt such a far drive for me.
Absolutely the best thing I’ve tasted in a really long time. There are very few vegan options in the city for those of us who like, as Cafe Maggie’s owner states, “Vegan food that is good in its own right, not because it’s trying to imitate mock meat.”Cafe Maggie’s new menu features a few different vegan options. I ordered the biscuits with Soyrizo gravy and every bite of this was phenomenal. I didn’t even need hot sauce and I’m a hot sauce ADDICT.I also got the house made Sunflower cookie which is like a freaking 10x better than peanut butter cookie(even though I love PB). And then finally a dirty Horchata, which was just right (not too sweet, but not plain or watery).I got to speak with the owner and am totally enamored with his business goals, his hopes for the cafe, and the support he’s offering to the Vegan community. Everyone who works here is so wonderfully kind.I’m so glad that @deathfreefoodie recommended this for my date morning with myself- I can’t wait to come back next weekend to try the pancakes!
This place was literally amazing it was so cute. The vibes were amazing and the food and drinks are amazing. Im so sad we don’t have one near me. I love this place and highly recommend it.
I cannot recommend Café Maggie highly enough! My girlfriend and I have been visiting this café for months, and every visit has been overwhelmingly positive. We are slowly working our way through the entire bakery display and every item has been fantastic. I usually get a baked good or two and an iced coffee and the coffee is great too. We have had a full breakfast there a few times and it has also been amazing.A few weeks ago I asked the owner (an incredibly nice guy who is always there working), if he had ever heard of something called a butter tart, its a Canadian treat that my Mom has always made. He said he would run it by his Baker, and now they are making them on a semi-regular basis! I havent had the opportunity to try one yet because they keep getting sold out before I am in there again, but I am extremely excited to get my hands on one.Not to mention, it is incredible to have such a wonderful local place where you can just bring up an old memory during a conversation, and then it ends up as part of their display case.Anyways, this place is amazing, everyone is super friendly, the food and coffee are always great.Go here as often as you can, you wont regret it.
First time here! As soon as we walked in we were greeted. The coffee was strong (which I love) and the bagels were delicious. Great atmosphere and friendly service! We definately will be back!!
Home of the $6 latte, unfortunately its a little more than coffee poured in milk not stirred not anything, I cant really recommend, the ambiance is great the food looked okay but I didnt try any. When I asked for sugar everything they had was refined or Sweet and low. Its kind of like going to McDonalds for coffee.
Great local joint that has options for everyone! Lots of gluten free and vegan options along with all the regular favorites. When you go....check out Maggie!
The strawberry refresher was SO tasty (IMHO, much tastier than ⭐bucks)The location was really cute and quirky, fit right into the eclectic scheme that 4th Avenue is so well-known for. While I didnt get to try any of the foods or goodies, they looked incredible in the display and I will be back again to try!
Service was great! the people are very nice. The food was delicious. Definitely recommend
This was a local recommendation (see update at the end) and we were not impressed. Its a rarity that I post a bad review, Ill usually just talk to the management so they can improve without the hit to their rating BUT it just didnt seem like they cared. The few bright spots:The cashier was wonderful and on her stuff, nailed the order. The croissants were amazing and we should have had those rather then the breakfast sandwich. The chai tea was not good, the egg in the breakfast sandwich was not good, and the service was slow.UPDATE: talked to the owner, Kim, and she was a joy to talk to. Huge kudos for being willing to talk to a customer to look at the opportunities to improve. I will definitely return to see if a better experience is more the norm.
Just had coffee, it was good. Good atmosphere ... Will go back and try some food next time.
They make their own bread and pastries. Wonderful. Atmosphere is lovely....artwork for sale on walls....fun. Staff so very nice. Tuna Melt was grand.
Service good, taste good, selection good. But was bread on my sandwich was dried a little
Friendly people, great coffee and food, and a welcoming, comfortable environment. Still epic, just under a different name! 😉
Been coming here for years and I have to say that I was a little disappointed. Service was OK. Young ladies that were working didnt go out of their way to make it a welcoming experience, and you know this when they are on their phones texting during business hours. I ordered an Iced Chai Tea and you could barely taste the Chai. I ordered a Chai Tea there not long ago and thought that maybe it was just made poorly, but it seems they are trying to skimp on the Chai. I also had a bagel with cream cheese that was overpriced. Lastly, the bathroom was filthy! You could tell that it hadnt clean in days and this is my pet peeve. No paper towels either. In its current condition I dont recommend. :(5/4/19: Well I came back and things have definitely improved. Bathroom was clean and Chai Tea was slightly better, but they need to add more Chai. The service was good, and didnt see any of the ladies on their phones. I do have to say that their desserts are pretty tasty! I had a slice of raspberry cake yesterday, but have been waiting for them to make this lemon cake that was to die for! My daughter actually said that was the cake she wanted for her wedding. She was 13 last year! Haha. Recommend :)Please like review! :)
We adore Cafe Maggie. I always liked Epic Cafe although I had been disappointed by the food on several occasions. Now the interior is more spacious and comfortable, the food is excellent (the biscuits and gravy and breakfast sandwich on croissant bread are amazing), great drinks, and local art still adorns its walls. The staff are really nice and friendly. Best of all, Cafe Maggie is named after its resident giant Dieffenbachia plant that has been a fixture of the place for all these years. If you were skeptical of Epic, give Cafe Maggie a shot! It’s delightful!
Love the new cafe!! Clean, bright, and delicious coffee :) barista was super friendly too. Thanks for keeping the spirit of epic cafe 🥰
Hey I love this place much better than star bucks thats for sure
Very fun. Great feeling
These folk are doing a great job reviving the olde Epic cafe, naming themselves by the plant we grew to love, Maggie. Nice simple menu, and not exorbitant prices.
Amazing vegan options for pastries. Avacado toast has generous portions
Good coffee but fairly slow service but they dont have enough employees on deck.
Awesome food, excellent service...
Great place to work, friendly staff, yummy food!
I love it I went there when it was the epic an when I went the other I found out it was renamed Maggie but it still felt like the epic it is a part of tucson history long live the epic
Great staff, relaxed atmosphere, and the dirty horchata is YUMMY!
Cold brew coffee was full of grounds
The baking is to die for. Very friendly staff!
Always enjoy the food, service, and location. Hoping 2021 they can get back to full speed.
Disregard the name: this isn’t a place I would describe as epic. It’s calming, instead — personable and charming, the way a good coffee shop always should be. While their prices (especially for their food) are a bit steep, and they are perhaps understaffed, the aesthetic alone makes this a worthwhile stop to escape from the hustle. Buy a cup of coffee, sit under a windowsill, and watch the world go by: this is the best place in the city to do it.
Great food, friendly service and great Jazz! They actually served us tea/coffee in real ceramic mugs with free refills. Its a far cry from the paper cups you get at Starbucks or other commercial coffee shops. Thumbs up and five 🌟 stars!
Great avacado toast
Very great service. I used to go to this place to study and chill with my friends before the pandemic.
Ownership has changed, and theyve quietly been updating the cafe, the menu, and prices. I liked the old setup, but I never realized how cluttered it was (or how loud the music was) until they cleared it out. Its now more spacious, calm, and welcoming. Its a hidey hole from the world. There are more booths, but theyve been spaced so that people of all sizes fit in them. The new owners are polite, personable, and remembered me from my last visit.
Kieran rocks! Awesome service, best plants in town, delicious vegan snacks.
It’s my first time writing a review. It has to be really bad for me to want to spend time telling people how bad it is.I’m breastfeeding and my baby is allergic to dairy.I got the combo plate. I asked her if there’s any dairy in the turkey sandwich. ‘It’s just cheese’ she shrugged her shoulder and just wanted to get my order quick.I told her to put cheese on the side (so my partner can have it), ‘you don’t have to have the cheese’. Oh okay then no cheese if it doesn’t come with cheese (I was a bit confused but okay)She then asked me what bread I wanted, I asked her which bread is dairy free. She said they all are. ‘They are just bread’And she gave me two options, croissants or rye.So I let my partner hose croissants though I was very doubtful. She sounded so confident so I didn’t ask further. We sat down and I was so reluctant to eat the sandwich because i know usually croissants have dairy. So my partner called and asked them (they didn’t know it’s us). Someone told him ‘there’s tons of butter loaded in the croissants’I then took the plate and wanted to ask someone to change it for me, but it’s the same lady who saw me first and asked what happened. So I told her to substitute that with something else because I think there’s butter in it.‘Well I explained to you already there’s diary’Wow. I couldn’t utter a word.I’m just crying and feeling so mad right now I couldn’t eat the sandwich. I came here with my partner because I already had a bad day.Her bad attitude and careless way of handling potentially lethal allergies made my day even worse.
09/17/21 Update: Stopped by again in the hopes that this cafe had aged well. I was not impressed. Scone was flat and limp. Normally I think of a scone as a finger food. . . you pick it up and take a bite. The scones they sell here today have the consistency of a flat muffin. In order to take it to go, they had to put it in a rigid cardboard box. Normally a scone should be delivered in wax paper inside a paper bag. If they served it this way I would have ended up with crumbs. The latte had a very bitter after taste. Decore was sterile and sparce. Quite disappointing. :(11/17 update: Theres either been a change of ownership or something. Decore has been butchered, sevice was slow and un confident. Place looks like it could close its doors amy day. Im downrating my once favorite coffee shop. 03/17: Epic has been my favorite coffee shop for over a decade. They always have the best home made baked goods, omelets, and of course coffee. Excellent place to visit with friends, study, or curl up with a good book. Customers are always unique as well.
Updated review** Got a chai and a Veggie sandwich. Sandwich was pretty skimpy, but the owner quickly got back to me and refunded sandwich. That was my only complaint. Chai was good. Girl working there was really nice. Chill ambiance. Respect for caring about your customers! Ill be back.
Good breakfast
Excellent staff, service, and food! Eating out vegan can be a challenge, but the manager went out of her way to offer me extra veggies when I asked for no egg or cheese on my breakfast burrito. The foot tasted great! I like the ambiance; great taste in music, artwork, and indoor plants. This is a great place for everyone, including vegan and gluten free baked goods. I will definitely be back!
Its a cool little neighborhood cafe. Great place to get a cup of coffee or maybe one of their awesome prickly pear lemonades, their sandwiches are good as well. The service is always pleasant and the atmosphere is laid back.
Decent coffee but kinda sweet for a black coffee th sadly way overpriced.
This is the best coffee shop in town. Friendly staff, calm atmosphere, and reasonably priced coffee. I can shop local instead of going to a chain, and the coffee is way better!
Awesome coffee! Ownership is shared by staff I believe, which is an great business model to ensure quality.Local artists get to hang their work up for sale and theres some amazing talent around town. The food is great! Love the burgers and home fries. And the prices are extremely reasonable considering its downtown location.Highly recommended for coffee, food and art lovers!
Open for take-out which is great for postmates drivers like me. The giant plant trying to grow out of the window was really cool.
Very welcoming environment, friendly and helpful staff. Quirky with great coffee
Decent little place on 4th . no frills here but good sandwiches and snacks
Great place for a quick bite, do some work, or have a meeting. The staff and food are great!
Great Food
Love it! Great local business... Awesome coffee drinks, food, nice staff. Good place to meet friends or read/study!
Great tasting coffee. Cool interior, with things to look at. You can also just sit there and relax with your beverage and enjoy one of their delicious sandwiches or treats.
Great little cafe. Good food made to order, but the real treat was the live classical style guitar music. Just a pleasant soothing experience. Ill definitely make this place a regular stop.
Epic Cafe is a great, friendly environment with wonderful service and great food. Seriously, best lox in all of Tucson! The food is fresh, the prices are good, and environment is calm and friendly.
I love it... they gave my puppy a snack of bacon and water they take care of me and my friends I love epic thank you Epic
Amazing coffee and pastries
I love it. Hot coco is so good and it has SO much whipped cream if you get the large. Its a great place to go on a regular basis, because the people will start to know you and your usual.
Pretty good experience. I went in the evening. It is a younger university crowd. Nice selection of teas and coffee and quiches, etc. A few vegan options,. Will have to go back and check how it is during the day.
I love this place, absolutely love it. Unless I go within 30 minutes of closing. Every single time I have done this, I end up getting the wrong order or an attitude from whomever is working. Sorry I have to work late and enjoy not a late night coffee, but that is no reason to give half the effort.
A friendly cafe located near the U of A. This is a great place to get work done. Im not much of a coffee person, but my girlfriend loved the coffee here and the salad was decent. The environment is quiet, yet cozy and well lit.The lady we ordered from, though, was kinda rude at first, but apologized and was a lit friendlier after that.If youre near U of A and need a place to study or relax for a while, this is a great place to do so.
This place gradually went downhill and is now out of business due to COVID-19
Fast and friendly local eatery. Service was great, service was nice and food was hot when served. Tried the house blend coffee and it was pretty good
I mean you dont go out of your way to get there. You dont go here because its good. You go here if you are already by the U or 4th and want coffee, and for that its fine.
This is my FAVORITE Coffee shop in town!!! The coffee is good, the food and pastries are AMAZING and freshly baked! The shop itself is cozy with plenty of seating and the owner, Kim is wonderful!! 100% recommend! 🥰
Went there for a coffee today. Paid 5 bucks for it. I sat down and waited for over a half hour before I finally decided to leave. Definitely not spending any money there for a while... extremely disappointing the staff there are always nice to me except for todays horrible service.
This is the second time I come here first time the service was good and enjoyed the place. Last night Saturday we went in about 8pm and there was no one in the front counter for Id say about 10 minutes we rang the little bell twice and no one came out we were about to leave when a girl finally comes in from the back and takes our order, we ordered a black coffee and a mocha, well she gave us the coffee and forgot the mocha...we sat there waiting until we went back and asked about the mocha and she had forgotten the order! and the place had only a couple of people there! and the black coffee was Luke warm to top it off...so I dont think well go back to this place.
Great place to eat. The food is very good, Roast Beef and Bacon in particularly, love the atmosphere. Great coffee (organic for those of you that care) and lots and lots of cafe food. Check it out, it wont disappoint.
This place is great if you are looking for gluten free food. Otherwise, its pretty much just okay. If you are lucky, you might be there contemporaneously with Papa Wheelie Man, who might be on roller skates and quite possibly wearing a dress. Frequented by hipsters, hippies, University students, and gutter punks, Epic offers a little slice of everything people love and hate about Tucson at the same time.
Had a yummy biscuits and gravy with potatoes.
Nice place to hangout and have a cup of coffee. They also offer fresh backed goods. James knows my order and has it made ready to go when I walk in.
Chilled out cafe with delicious, reasonably priced food. Two coffees, a bagel and a slice of quiche came to around $12. The staff were really friendly and there was a musician playing acoustic guitar for some live background music.
My hair dresser recommended this cafe, so I came. I loved the environment, I wanted to read and feel inspired that I got. The menu items were good, the items I ordered were good BUT the service was horrible. The person serving left my quiche that I ordered in microwave and was talking (there were none to serve after me). I had to go and ask after 15 min. The cafe should hire more engaged servers, and customer service need to be uped.
No one has connected the slightly flirtatious things Ive said on here with who I am... right? Because I have a sweet Russian hacker story. Just in case.
Wonderful staff, tasty grub. A little pricey, but its so cosy and welcoming, it matters little. Absolutely love it.
This place is great for a quick bite and drink, maybe even to do homework. I recommend the couscous! Staff is friendly and welcoming, they are always able to customize and work with you.
The good: Ive been here a few times to get breakfast and do work on the computer. Overall a nice and pleasant environment, very casual and not uppity or pretentious in the slightest. At the same time not low quality. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff. I really enjoy being here. The bad: I find it odd that a couple of staff are occasionally smoking an e-cig or vaporizer of some sort behind the counter. Including the owner/manager! Very odd and unsettling. The owner/manager also will bark orders at staff and it can be distracting and disruptive to the clientele.
Whenever I visit Tucson, I stop here to get Espresso Chocolate Mousse! When I was in town for the Gem Show, I called to make sure they had some left in their case. Kim said they were all sold out. But when I explained my situation that it was my birthday and that I wanted to bring some on the road trip back to California to share with my friends, she happily said she would make me some !!! I came by to pick them up, and she packed a little extra for my on the road treat complete with a little lit birthday candle and the staff singing me happy birthday... So a sweet and special way to celebrate my birthday roadtrip!
Great drinks and food! My fav is their everything bagels and a noddy toddy!
Friendly customer service, laid back atmosphere, quality food. Did I mention the keto quiche? All the quiches are light yet hearty. And, Chai tea latte + Seed Cookies = heaven on earth.
I just ordered through grub hub from work and couldnt even eat my food. I ordered the epic chef salad and there was no turkey, no egg, and the quality was horrible. The lettuce was old and wilted. I even took pictures of it and my co workers said they wouldnt eat it either. Disappointed and hungry now....
Super chill breakfast spot with great coffee and nice staff!
This place has awesome coffee and awesome food. I love the alternating artwork displays! And the fact that they serve homemade bakery items until midnight means that I can reward myself with cookies for getting my homework finished.
I work here a lot when Im in Tucson. Low-key environment mainly with locals and students depending on the season. Great menu and great dessert/coffee options! Peanut butter mocha.......
Great location that serves good coffee. They have very friendly employees. Many power outlet options! Fairly loud inside, with many middle school aged kids running around inside.
I didnt order anything because the barista didnt know the baked products in the display cases. It was a slow day, he should really be knowing the products hes selling. Also the chairs were kind of gross.
This is a comfortable eclectic local coffee shop. The service is excellent! I met a friend there and we had a great time visiting and enjoying our coffee and tea. I will return!
Staff is so sweet, such nice people. Coffee is delicious. Food we ordered was literally inedible - took over 30 minutes, smelled strange and looked awful. We left before everyone’s food was ready.
