Ive been a FIne lumber regular for a few years now, and have purchased half a dozen different hardwood species and a fair quantity of Baltic Birch plywood. Not professional quantities -- Im a hobby woodworker. But Ive nearly always had superior service and left happy with what I bought. I especially like that you can go through the hardwood yourself and pick out pieces that you choose, and eliminate any bummers. And since I have a limited capability to haul, theyre happy to cut things to sizes that fit in my Jeep. My latest purchase was today, a 5X5 piece of Baltic Birch. The price was breathtaking but not because of FIne, but rather the shortage of the stuff on the market and resultant inflation. Their prices are competitive and they dont sell junk.
Best place to get help. Walked in not knowing what the best wood is for my project and Jason was incredible to help me guide and cut the wood for me. Can’t wait to come back.
This is the most fantastic place to get your hardwood needs! Pick your own and they check you out. If youve never been, the staff will give you the total tour and make sure you have what you want and need! 11 stars!
Great service and knowledgeable staff. Recently did a special order of a couple sheets of 1 Baltic Birch, 2 day turnaround. Cant ask for better service. Been shopping here since ~2008, will continue to do so. Quality of the lumber far exceeds what I can get anywhere else. Good selection of lumber and moldings in stock.
The selection of material is outstanding and the the staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful and patient. I look forward to going back again and again to get more!
Horrible customer service with sales department. “I can’t help you I really don’t know what we have here”
They had exactly the wood I needed and it was the first time I visited so I was a little confused with the layout but i was probably just being dumb. I asked and a kind man in the warehouse helped me get a sales man and helped me load up. No complaints excellent place to get whatever you need and I will definitely come back if I need to get more.
Prices are great, shopping was easy and convenient. Salesman who took care of me was very helpful.
Good luck finding someone to help you. I finally had to ask someone for help, after everyone ignored me. When I did, he acted like I was inconveniencing him and said hed put me on the list. What list? Was I supposed to know theres a list? How long is the list? Apparently they have enough business that they dont need mine. I wont be back.
Great selection of lumber as usual. The staff did a great job of handling the larger than normal crowd. Was asked three times if i needed assistance in the short time i was there.
My husband and I are from Midland, Texas and had never been to Fine Lumber and Plywood Co. before. Not only did no one help us (multiple employees walked passed us and just looked at us) but we called the phone number for sales help, they said they would send someone, and after 15 minutes no one came. We ended up just leaving. Such a shame because they missed out on a pretty big sale. My husband is an avid and skilled woodworker. I normally don’t leave reviews, but we were extremely turned away by our experience.
This place is great. Nice people, good materials.
Great customer service, estimates, delivery, and material selection. The most pleasant lumber buying experience in Austin.
Recently got into woodworking due to covid. They have a great selection of wood (lengths, widths, veener, etc). But would recommend shopping around first, prices here were considerably higher than other local shops/online for the same quality.
If you go, ask for Dave. He was patient and kind with me, answered my questions and was incredibly helpful. As for everyone else, chauvinist clowns who were not only unhelpful but genuinely rude. I recently got into woodworking and am definitely not an expert but everyone (including women) deserve a chance to learn more about a craft. It is already intimidating to walk into an environment you know little about, chuckles from the peanut gallery while you’re doing your best made sure that I will never be back.
This place is great. I have been in a couple times now and both times was helped very quickly. They were willing to spend lots of time answering my questions. The quality of materials is in a different league than a big box store and the selection is excellent. Will definitely continue to return here for my projects.
Simple to locate materials and great staff.
I have been to this place several times, I love that they allow you to take time to sort through the boards and hand pick which ones you like. I have bought maple, walnut and hickory from them and they all make beautiful projects. Their selection is the best. Skip the big box stores and give these guys a chance to earn your business!
Working with them for 15 years. My best place in Austin to buy quality wood, nice people, good price, good service, 100 % recommendedThierry AmisseFine French Woodworking
Great first visit! I received a nice tour and overview of their services. I relocated from Chicago and my first visit was long overdue. Matthew was great and its awesome that I have a solid lumber supplier in Austin. They have a great selection and very well organized setup.I will be back soon to pick out some hardwoods for some upcoming projects!
Always great, have a great stock on shelves. Always have what we want.
Great place to get specialty lumber (they have more than 60 species) ! I was able to find white oak in 2x12 and they were able to cut it and give it a smooth, clean edge. Will come back here for future wood projects!
I absolutely love it. The service is the best they have a huge selection of woods specifically plywoods. I was quickly greeted and asked what they could do for me. The salesman quickly showed me his stock and picked the right piece. I needed a small 1/4 walnut 2x4 and I understood I needed to buy the whole sheet which was fine because I would use the rest for another project. I also needed the sheet cut down to 2x4 to fit in my car not only did the salesman cut it for free buy he recommend the best way to cut it so that the grain was perfect. The whole sheet cost less than a 1/4 2x4 ordered from home depot but with home depot I would have to pay 55.00 to have it shipped. For a huge selection, great prices and great service and availability this is the place. I have been to numerous independently locally owned lumber and specialty shops and this one is one of the best. I highly recommend them for any speaker builder and stereo audiophile looking to build a custom stereo rack.
Good variety and selection of both hardwoods and plywood. Good pricing.
I had a great experience at Fine Lumber. Service was excellent, and I was able to get exactly what I needed. I was looking for a small piece of exotic hardwood about 2x9x13, but I did not have to get more than I needed. They also explained the differences in pricing due to fluctuations in availability, importing regulations, etc. I had the space to browse and find the right wood and help when it was time to cut. Highly recommended.
Went here feeling a little intimidated, Eric kindly gave me a tour and the know-how on how to purchase lumber for my projects. Super helpful staff and a great selection of woods. Highly recommended!
Incredibly good customer service. I just made my first visit and I am absolutely floored at how friendly the staff is! I wasn’t planning to pick anything up today but saw the beautiful lace wood and needed a piece
Great service and help on each visit. Staff offers suggestions and alternatives, which I appreciate. Dropped off a list of 25 door/drawer fronts to have cut in a variety of sizes. Work was exceptional and at a fair price with a one day turn around. Prices are very reasonable.
Love these guys. As a hobbyist, being able to drop by during lunch hour, or on Saturday morning is great. Even when Im just grabbing a couple boards, the guys are super helpful. When Ive had large deliveries the fees were reasonable and the driver was conscientious, friendly, and genuinely helpful. Same was true of the the guys who helped me pick out rough stock. They will always be my first stop for lumber in Austin.
The hardwood selection is unmatched ANYWHERE else in Austin. Their prices are very competitive. The folks who work there are always ready to assist in any way they can, to make sure you have the best materials for your project.ALL of them are professional and great to deal with.Well done!
Great staff and helpful crew. Wouldnt dare go anywhere else, ever. Customer service is outstanding and the overall energy is intoxicating. Open even on Saturdays until noon!!
I come here pretty regularly for both work stuff and personal projects and I always find what I need. Its clean and well-organized, and the staff are always helpful and know what theyre talking about. Plenty of parking for a trailer too. Therere other shops in Austin but this place is my go-to for lumber and sheet goods.
Weve shopped and bought from Fine Lumber twice now and had great experiences both times. The staff is friendly and insightful and the wood selection is unmatched compared to other places weve looked around town.
These guys have a wide selection of wood in rough and s4s and also a large selection of high grade plywood with different veneers. Sometimes they can get a little busy but they always try and help you out as quickly as they can. My first visit they gave me a tour of the place so that I would know where I could find everything I needed. Come in knowing what you need already and you can pick the wood you want on to a cart and then the guys in the office can just take the measurements and ring up your ticket.
Great place for wood, excellent customer service
Reasonable selection of lumber and plywood, though the quality of sheet goods is on the lower end. They sell exotic species and are open on Saturday morning. They dont have a minimum, but expect to hear some grumbling if you take up their time spend under $100. Management generally doesnt back the product they sell, so if you have issues, they effectively just shrug or pass it up to the distributor. If youre a hobbyist looking for a small volume and enjoy combing through and picking just the cream of the crop, you will probably enjoy frequent trips here. However, if you need more than a couple matching boards, youre probably not going to get it at Fine unless you get them to pull from a fresh bundle. The stacks get picked through, rearranged, and mixed together quite a bit as a result of their open-selection policy.
I looked all over town to find the right cabinet hinges until someone recommended Fine Lumber. I have made two purchases from them and the sales staff have been very knowledgeable. They were out of stock during my second visit so when they received a new shipment they saved me a trip and delivered the small ($35) order to my house! I had tried one of the big hardware chains first, but I wont make that mistake again!
Huge selection of domestic lumber in just about any size you could need. They have a much smaller but very respectable selection of exotic hardwoods as well, with a few types that are hard to find anywhere (in quality) let alone in Austin town. Dont be put off if they are busy, once you get someones attention they will be very helpful.
The warehouse is nice and pretty well organized. Ive been there about 5 times. The customer service has been great from everyone there EXCEPT from the tall older fellow with the beard. Hes not a pleasant person to deal with at all. He seems to manage or own the place, so Ive decided to seek out other lumberyards just so i dont have to deal with him.
Great place for your woodworking lumber needs, pricey but they will have the hardwood for your project. Friendly and informative staff but you can tell they dont want to get asked a million questions about your project, even though they politely answer, do your research and be prepared. They do have smaller cut-offs that they will sell cheaper.
Little expensive but you have a awesome selection of lumber to choose from. As they say, you pay for what you get!
Super helpful, Brian did a great job showing me around and explaining what I needed to know. Very happy!
Amazing selection of Hardwoods and some softwoods. Very friendly and helpful staff. Definitely shop here often.
Ive been coming to this lumber yard for several years. The selection and quality of the lumber of great. the staff is always friendly and helpful.
Im an avid hobby woodworker and have been building furniture for 30 years. I buy small quantities of lumber and plywood from Fine Lumber & Plywood every few months and have never been disappointed in either their material quality or the friendly, knowledgeable, efficient assistance of their staff. Its not common to find a business of this caliber and thats why I continue to do business with them. One service they provide that I really appreciate is that theyll cut plywood or long boards into a couple pieces so its easier to handle plus it fits in my SUV to haul. Just a great place to do business with.
These guys were great. Quick to help and know their stuff. This will be my go to from now on
Helpful, friendly, and very accommodating towards non-pros. Some lumber yards are only good at interacting with carpenters, not this place. Im new to woodworking and they helped me pick exactly what I needed. I will be back. Thanks!
Best place to find quality lumber in Austin. They are have the facilities to dimension or router profiles into anything. Highly recommended.
Great service and beautiful selection of hardwoods. Prices were comparable to other hardwood stores, they allow you to hand select your specific piece and allow you to purchase partial boards. Also unlike several other reviews my mixed race family and two small kids were treated very well and without predjuidice. Will definitely shop here again.
Great selection knowledgeable staff!!!
They have a good supply of lumber and other items. I called ahead and made sure they had the item I was looking for and asked for the price, I was quoted a price of $24.33 a sheet of 1/2 inch melamine. So I went there and bought six sheets. I purchased other lumber items also. I was given a ticked and paid it. I did not notice until I got home (my mistake) that I was charged over $29.00 each sheet for the melamine. That is over a 20% increase from my quoted price. Nothing is priced in the warehouse so I guess it is who ever waits on you as to what they charge you. Not a good business model. I felt cheated and do not think I will be purchasing from them again. Look at your tickets before you pay!!!
What a great place to visit. Friendly staff and a great selection.
Staff was super friendly and they had ample stock available. Highly recommend them for any woodworkers looking for quality hardwoods in Austin.
Brian was very helpful discussing my project and advising me on good materials. Also got a generally good impression of the place valuing craftsmanship and quality.
Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Get have a much wider selection at a better quality than most lumber yards Ive been to.
Good service and good selection. Easy to find your way around. Fair prices on hardwoods also
Always a pleasure to trade with Peter and his team. First class wood supply
Amazing selection, great quality, and good pricing. Paul and Matthew have excellent customer service, but the rest of the team needs to learn by example.
Peter and the team at fine lumber has been a reliable partner for a long time, they are the source when it comes to new lumber.
This place offers some of the finest woods! Not to mention excellent customer service at a very competitive price! You always get to take your pick of the pile!
Good selection of lumber. Jason, I think was his name helped me with some good wood for my new brick and mortar location.
The staff is friendly and will show where to go to find what you are looking for. They have a great selection of hard woods with a variety of sizes.
Excellent, wide selection of woods, super nice and helpful staff, fair and competitive prices.
Loved it! Great customer service ( talk to Paul if you can) good selection and decent prices!
I think that they have a good selection. They people were helpful. I bought wood for a table.
Looking forward to doing business with these great people!
Knowledgeable and friendly staff! Excellent selection of beautiful wood!
Great selection and super helpful staff. Brian and Roger are great.
Superlative customer service combined with a great selection of lumber.
Best affordable thin Baltic birch. Great for laser cutter. Friendly.
Very friendly, even if you dont need large quantities. They show you various options so you can pick what you really like.
Hard to beat a real lumber yard and not a box store. Real deal here.
Awesome wood selection and staff to help
I heard from a friend who does wood working that this is a nice place to buy wood from. So confident on that knowledge, I went in and bought a 14 board of pine lumber. They charged me $69 dollars for that. However, when I came back and compared the product with similar pine boards at lowes and homedepot, they were waayy cheaper. Almost half the price. I agree that the quality of the big box stores may have been a little inferior, but still, 69 dollars compared to 30 dollars is way high. I think they are very expensive. Unfortunately, because I had the board cut, I cannot return it either.
Excellent family ran business! Been a customer since 1984.
Great service
Great service and selection.
Great
I havent been there yet, but my wife loved it! She could not have been more pleased with their customer service.
Very knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Always incredibly helpful people.
Huge selection of many different types of lumber.
Wide variety of wood in stock, usually pretty busy.
