Five stars all the way! Fresh organic only produce, hand crafted meals, salads, soups, side dishes, desserts and more to go or to eat in the Cafe area. Lots of top quality organic, natural and specially foods plus many options for plant-based diets. Beautifully displayed and excellent conditions. I tried the cold sesame noodles, spicy pasta salad and vegetable enchiladas. Delicious and large portions for a fair price.
Ive only drove by this place, and it looks interesting from the outside.. Ill keep in touch when I do step foot inside this establishment..
Love the cafe for lunch! The food is always delicious and fresh! We enjoy coming down and walking through the diverse grocery store as well!We went through Gateway Market for our wedding catering and loved it! We had a brunch and it was fantastic! The breakfast potatoes were a hit! Kelly was great and easy to work with and she communicated very well!
Gateway Market catered our lunch today - 50 box lunches. The food was great, they were right on time, each lunch was clearly marked so we knew right away who it belonged to, and even though the person delivering forgot our drinks, she ran to a local store, purchased both the lemonade and tea we had ordered, bought glasses for us to use, even brought sugar packets so we wouldnt have to go without something to drink. Even after doing all of that, Gateway STILL removed the cost of the drinks from our bill! That was SO awesome!! Thank you Gateway for making me look good to all my co-workers and the powers that be here in my office. You guys are ROCK STARS!!!!
Great place to get some speciality grocery items or grab a fast casual bite. I have celiac and they are always accommodating for my allergy. The portions are generous and the food is always great! My fave is the seared tuna sandwich.
Great for healthy choices and selection is wide. My wife has some serious food allergies and a place like this has allowed us to find foods she can enjoy. Not from Des Moines, but when we pass through we know now where we can go to supplement her foods.
Good food, good wine, fresh fruits and veggies, organic spices and seasons
Healthy, Different Choices for Specific ItemsGreat for Charcuterie Needs
Love, love, love this store and the wonderful array of products. I adore Stonewall Kitchen products and appreciate I can always find something wonderful at Gateway Market.
I like coming here they have a salad bar you can get your own salad but its $6.99 per pound on your salad now they have a they have pulled chicken with peppered in the salad bar they also have this really nice sweet but a little bit spicy its a peanut butter and mayonnaise mix and its a peanut butter dressing for your salad of course I like to put it on my chicken drench my chicken completely all up in it and once I start eating it I cant stop eating it so good they also have a restaurant and a deli and a cheese area personally crafted cheese where you can go and talk to a wine expert about different kinds of wine but they have a lot of organic products as well little pricey but you paid good money for good place to eat and this is a good place to eat I actually like coming here I only live about three blocks from it
Downtown Des Moines and extra fresh grocery and food to eat into delivery or pickup...menu is fantastic
We enjoy going to Gateway for specific food items hard to find in other stores. Prior to COVID restrictions a restaurant within the store was a GREAT place for breakfast or lunch. It was reasonably priced for the quality of food served. Their restaurant had a bit of a limited menu, but almost everything on it was very well prepared. If something was not prepared as usual or to your satisfaction it was redone immediately to your satisfaction. It was one of the places we would take company for breakfast. Although the outside dining may be open now that nicer weather has arrived, the inside dining was not yet open last week when I was there. And customers have been able to order take out from the restaurant and the deli kitchen that is a part of the store itself. I personally love their rotisserie chicken, homemade mash potatoes and/or baking powder biscuits. Their meat counter sells only high quality meat products. And now I find myself growing hungry for some chicken and potatoes, and since they arent open, it best to stop writing at this time! The only reason I give it four instead of five star is because, in my opinion is that the groceries are over priced in some areas, even for a specialty type of grocery store, and because they closed their bakery a few years ago, and it was one of the main reasons I shopped in the grocery store side of the business. They had great homemade breads, cakes, bars, cookies, and other items. I still miss it!
The most consistent thing they do is give you plastic to-go silverware when you specifically ask for none. Food is good.
Great store when shopping for organic and allergy specific products! Great staff, very helpful!
Grocery store has items that are very upscale, interesting, and unique, but overpriced. The cafe is mismanaged. For example in the hot bar they make massive amounts of chicken tenders all at once, and then let them sit there all day so its almost impossible to get fresh food. Im giving five stars anyway because the food is amazing when its done right. I would say definitely give this place a try, but order something off the menu so they have to make it fresh; Ive not had good luck with the pre-prepared foods (the only exception being the baked goods which are always fresh and delicious). Also this place has a really good breakfast menu, but they only serve it on the weekends. I wish they made breakfast daily because its one of the best breakfasts in the whole area.
This market is a reason to live in Des Moines! Service is wonderful, and they have many products I haven’t been able to find elsewhere.
Great selections, the best organic foods for those with discerning tastes.
Great selection, kind staff. I always found the restaurant to be ehh not worth it but the shopping side is great. So many options too choose. Pricey
I like gateway market. They have pizza dough that is already rising and plenty of ingredients to add to it. My favorite reason to go there is to find odd ball stuff that I cant find at the supermarket. Excellent Hot sauce selection as well as other things. It is the only place that I have seen Dukes and Kewpie mayo in the same place. They also have a restaurant however I have never ate their but it looks delicious. They also have an impressive wine selection which is divided by country. You have to at least check it out once and you probably will find yourself stopping there again.
I like this little grocery, it is spendy, but it has a variety of quality groceries as well as take out. And the little garden corner is always a way to my heart, lovely flowers and whimsical arrangements
This place has good food. Go eat there. Their salads are tasty.
This is my secret grocery spot for really good food, but way too many people are finding out about it. Try the homemade Macaroni and cheese. They also have a nice selection of wines and gourmet cheeses.
This is a decent grocery store however their also big on ripping people off. I get salads from time to time. Over time Ive noticed they fill it more and more with greens and less and less with other ingredients that are supposed to be in them based on menu descriptions. Today I paid $14 for a bowl of lettuce. Its supposed to have chicken and barely has any. Its supposed to have carrots and bean sprouts and there were essentially none to find. Its not just a one time accident either. Its happened several times. I think its glaringly obvious their attempt at ripping their customers off if they are charging $14 for a salad and basically just giving you lettuce. They charge extra for avocado (which is normal) and then give one tiny sliver. Ive also gotten a few sandwiches that were served on stale bread. Considering they bake their own bread, that seems like a conscious choice they are making to charge a lot for gross old bread. $14 is a lot for a salad even if they are giving decent amounts of ingredients. Its insulting when its just a bowl of lettuce.
The organization of the store is a bit crowded but there is a great selection of healthy foods, many that Ive never heard of. The one thing about this place that I would say is a bummer is that the customers and staff seem to be somewhat stand-offish. At the time I felt that it had something to do with the fact that I was using foodstamps. That might not have been the case but it IS Sherman Hill neighborhood.
I love that they offer many vegetarian options!
I was there for a doordash and it smelled great Im there just service for my doordash was slower than Id hope I got a tough lashing from my customer.
Expensive, but always delicious and high quality. Love their salad bar and home pizza dough on the grocery side!
Everytime I stop in here I end up getting something lol. So many options. The cafe is delicious. The produce is fresh.
I love this restaurant and grocery store, it is always a great atmosphere. The food is always spectacular and I am greeted with outstanding customer service. I only wish breakfast was available more than just weekends.
Nice variety of healthy specialty foods, sauces, toppings, fresh meat and fish, natural products, cheeses and wines, fruits and veggies too!
Sorely disappointed with my lunch. Bread was over cooked and was hard to the point it was painful to bite into. They put wayyyyy too much of the grain mustard sauce on my sandwich I had to try to take it apart and try to rub as much as possible off. I got the veggie vs the normal chille soup becuase I dont like corn and the default was labeled as having corn in it. Well SURPRISE the veggie one had corn in it too and the whole soup tasted sweet. HUGE waste. I threw out almost my entire meal. It also feels like a McDonalds in there. The atmosphere is nothing to brag about. Would never come back, best of luck.
Generally great, though a bit expensive. Cashier asked for my ID, then turned around to ask her coworker about weekend plans ignoring my outstretched hands (vibrant hair, tattoos on her arms of I think maybe barber Scissors?), so that was a bit annoying. Still, top notch quality groceries and some of the best pizza dough around!
Great place to get that Special item, wonderful bottle of wine...or wonderful fresh produce. Love the sushi for lunch!
The deli was good as usual and the staff was the best. Did not visit the grocery this trip.
The merchandise is very good stuff. I highly recommend this place
Excellent Food for Take out, Eat InLots of hot and cold options, fresh or prepreparred ..all good stuff .Select home food items in market, the location is also a resturant..both are good quality 😁
I like this place. I think perhaps they should do more than one batch of g beans per day. Just my experience. Not a lot of places for fresh veg. Veg sushi not after 7... U think braising is the way all day everyday? Maybe its for the visual effect. Ooooh.. What?
I order from this establishment once a month and 7 out of the last 10 months my order has been incorrect. I always order the same thing veggie ramen, I order this due to an allergy to pork. The menu states that the veggie ramen uses sesame miso broth, yet 7 out of 10 times I have been given pork broth. I have been made severely ill on multiple occasions due to negligence. I should also note that I have made the staff and management aware of this mistake on multiple occasions and yet the problem still persists. I do not recommend this restaurant if you suffer from food related allergies.
So many good choices and so many friendly, knowledgeable people here to help.
Love a good boujee market and this is one of best! The bread here is incredible. The cheese section is amazing too, with tons of great local selections. Im hooked on their bacon & steaks, and completely obsessed with the lobster salad and hummus.
Love this store. Everything tastes great.
Had the Beyond Meat burger and fries. Utterly delicious. Cant wait to get another one.
I love everything about this place! The staff were all awesome and the food was just the best! (And honestly really well priced vegan stuff)
Some of the most unique and wonderful food and service.
Weird stuff; overpriced. Great Food...Better stuff at Aldi.
Love the products and produce. Nothing like local resources. Fresh flowers and great deli, butcher counter and fresh food service. Customer service is great and dine in is now available.
Wine department is as good as it gets. Neverous, is the manager. He is exceptional. If you want a $10 bottle, he has it. If you are celebration a social occasion and want to splurge, he has it. Ask. The Man had a deep knowledge of wine and is eager to share.
One of the very few places that carries healthy and organic foods that you wont even find in health sections at regular grocery stores. I have yet to try their cafeteria section, though the orders I pick up for grubhub deliveries smell soooo good! 😂
No more eat in available, but get food to go. Grocery still open. Their inventory is limited. Their prices are out of sight $$$.We dont shop there very often. Their meat is EXCELLENT as well and also is $$$. Delicious pastries and other goodies too.
Best customer service..went the extra step to getting my request with a grateful attitude.A day maker . Thank you
It’s a sweet oasis; It is a beautiful place for families to gather, to eat, shop and socialize. The place has many different faces and multiple services and the staff is as diverse as it’s products. I have visited Gateway on many occasions, usually on my way to Chicago from KC. Yesterday’s visit was my least favorite at least when it comes to the food court. It was hard to miss the uncharismatic cashier, he was stone faced. Present in body, but not in heart and soul.Food is about abundance, joy and happiness. Serving love with food is what makes everything taste better. The issue was not only with that cashier, it was all around me in the food court area with the food service employees.Something is happening in that place that is robbing the joy off the faces of the kitchen, cashiers and floor staff. Perhaps we have a manager or a culture issue that is failing the emotional needs of the staff.Advice to the management team:Food is beautiful, but the people who prepare it, and serve it are the most important ingredient in that salad, sandwich, or bowl of soup etc.Give your staff the gift of love, compassion and emotional attention and brings those smiles back into their faces.Best.
This is where I go to treat myself to olives, spinach lasagna, sushi, tiny little cakes and old school orange soda in a bottle!
Gateway isnt a huge store but it offers quality options to the normal supermarket fare. Its hot food bar, fresh sushi, organic produce, and a small restaurant make it a fabulous and fun place to shop.
Great store for variety. The best meat &fish dept in DesMoines.
So good! Not only did they sub in something allergy safe for me but everything was delicious 😋. Will be getting food here again!
I have food allergies and they carry the ingredients i need to make dinners without worrying.
Got a wrap. It was good.
Nice place for different foods, but is expensive, not catered to the average shopper. Great soups as well!
I enjoy shopping here because of the wonderful wine selection. They have unique whites and reds for a great price. The salad bar is awesome! Their cheese department rocks! I love their plants, too! I have several and they haven’t died! Very hardy, well worth the money. I love Mary Ann! She is so sweet and personable. I’m grateful for this neighborhood gem.
I know things are different now but the service and friendliness we are used to doesnt seem to exist. The gluten free options have lessened also. We will have to start looking for over venues.
Smaller selection of items but prices are out of sight. We shop there occasionally for the different products they have. Good meat selection. Theres a wine department, specialty cheeses besides the food and drink items. Their restaurant is still closed due to Covid, but its a great place to eat. I dont know when they plan to reopen.
The service of the staff is top notch. Nevres in the wine department is THE best.
Long line good food
Great selection. Polite and knowledgeable team members.
Ideal to get what you forgot from the supermarket, well provided. Tasty stuff.
I always find some good, interesting items here. Sober things seem a little pricey, but overall a nice place. Staff is always friendly & helpful
Great cafe and good farm to table fruit and vegetables. Friendly environment in the store. Very well kept. Staff is great
I go there almost daily. The staff is wonderful and theyre friendly and efficient. It is agood meeting place and its a good place to just get away and enjoy coffee and food. Bring your own cup comeand coffee is only a dollar
Im an employee and very nice atmosphere w/ mandatory masks if you dont have a mask you can purchase one. Food is great as well
Love their Market Cafe, good food and lots of it for a reasonable price.
I love this place: no longer dine in with covid-19,every time I go I have to order fish taco!
Only time being here, the cod and fries were burnt, which being my first time, I could accept but the quality of cod was the worst I’ve ever had for the price I paid. Plus the drinks are separate.
Omg!!!! This is amazing!!! Im so glad I came today and not Thursday before I go back to Atlanta!!
Its great! I appreciate the speed and the response to covid! Walked in and got out within 10 min. Staff helped me find what I needed and be on my way while social distancing.
Id love to give this place a better review. As a pretentious whole foods advocate; I figured Id love this place from what I heard from Des Moines natives.I ordered the Tokyo ramen and the gf ordered pad Thai. Both were the blandest of either dish Ive ever had. I would have rather just had store samples of fancy cheeses and dips; which were amazing. Which is why there is more than one star. The ramen; Ive lived in Southeast Asia so maybe this passes as ramen in Des Moines and Ive become the pretentious white girl I was always meant to be. But, genuinely, get ramen in a cardboard package you need to add water to for better ramen. Doesnt even matter what brand. White bread has far more flavor.Add to it supposedly it comes with your choice of meat or tofu; if there was anything in this except more undercooked noodles, an egg, and pieces of corn I sure couldnt find it.Stick to the grocery and products produced by other people.
Service is top notch. Selection is great.
Absolutely fantastic 1st 2nd time 3rd not so the rest love the onion rings and the pecan sweet roll. Ruben Sandwich dry but still not done gotta try the Iowa Tenderloin!!!
Havent been in the area to be able to go in here in quite some time, but was able to this time in town & I cant believe it ! I didnt think they could get any better, but THEY HAVE !!! For being in a smaller building with all the merchandise they carry, one would think it would all be a shambled mess - BUT IT ISNT !!!They carry so much more now than they did last time I visited here. But it is all displayed so well & organized that its easy to find what you are looking for.KUDOS TO THEM FOR HAVING SUCH A GRAND SELECTION OF JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING. If youre looking for something just a little out of the ordinary, something you wouldnt find at your regular run of the mill grocery store - check HERE !!!The ONLY problem Ive ever had here is they quit carrying a product that I loved & Im not able to find it anywhere else either & that is: pickled garlic - they used to carry. I LOVE that STUFF, plus I was taking it for my health as well. Cracker Barrel used to carry them as well, but they also have quit carrying it !!!I only WISH I could FIND a place that WOULD carry this ALWAYS !!!
Love love love their salads and chicken dinners! Biscuits are soft and buttery. Yum!
Quality food in the restaurant at fair prices. Tenderloins are tasty and not greasy. Friendliness of service can be hit or miss.
Small store but packed with everything foodie. Lots of Organic food and produce.I like their hot sauce selection and I hope they can keep up.
Love the store... Like most health food stores, its expensive.
I love Gateway Market! The food is amazing! However, many of the grocery items are priced far too high. The only other issue I have with Gateway Market is that I saw an employee wiping the floor and then use the same rag to wipe down a table without even rinsing the rag or spraying anything. Thats pretty gross!
Love all their food
Great products and friendly staff.
Love the variety of products offered. I always walk out with something new to try. We love going to the alcohol section and trying out the different drinks on tap!
Love this shop they have so many items to choose from and produce is so fresh.
Good hot food options for take out. Only 4 spaced out tables to use for dine in.
We love the people who work at the store and in the restaurant. We miss having dinner, there. Great hot case selection.
Thank you, Jordan, for helping me create a beautiful floral gift to warm my choir directors heart. She just loved it. I appreciate you so much and just love Gateway Market! #janecurlart
Gateway is a great place to shop, but be aware of sticker shock on every item for sale there. The meat is top quality, theres a great selection of cheeses and wines. Their restaurant has an incredible variety of sandwiches, soups and desserts. If youre a vegan, this is the place to go. We go occasionally for a great breakfast, lunch or dinner. I cant describe everything available there, but its pretty much a condensed full-size grocery.
We stop and at least once a week. Wife shops for wholesome grocery items. I place order for dinner. We both sit and eat. Menu has a variety of nice things. There is also hot a carry out section. That gives me lunch for the next day.I have one dislike. I don’t drink pop or wine. Don’t drink the water from soda fountain, it’s horrible. Tastes like an old steel pipe with chlorine in it.
Amazing selection of unique foods. I will start shopping here a bit more.
Love Gateway and have enjoyed every item Ive gotten there. The salads, wraps and sandwiches are great...next up to try, one of the entree/hot meal or breakfast options. The grocery store section is a bit pricy but if youre in a bind and want to pick up something nice, its a good option as well!
