If I could leave zero I would. I’ve given this place 3 chances. If you want a basic breakfast this place will be fine. Other than that don’t waste your time. I ordered a Turkey Burger with sweet potato fries. It came out cold the fries and the burger which was also dry. I said it was cold she said they would make a new one. They just threw it in the microwave and brought it back.Save your time and money and find a better diner.
It’s worst place I’ve ever been . Their food was super nasty and their plate was dirty. I talked with the staff to at least to get me a good food, they were super rude. I just paid for the food and left because the food smells bad and staff refused to replace the food and was about insult me.
Great service and decent selection of dishes. Breakfast is my favorite there; they make great pancakes!

This Restaurant/Diner is always welcoming and peaceful, especially if you consider the busy surrounding area its located in... Easy to access from the path train 5 minutes walking distance within Journal square ...in addition the 10 bus stops right outside the front door .. ..I walk 15 minutes to go and have a great burger or an exceptional French Onion Soup... Breakfast is always on the money, and you can order it from open to close ... I particularly enjoy their Fish and Crab Cakes ... and if you are smart enough to choose a steak dish on the menu you will find yourselves pleased you did.... I recommend This Diner to family and friends who are visiting ...I never want them to go home without experiencing a great meal and excellent service ... My pancakes were raw in the middle. Grill too high. Wifeys breakfast was awesome. Love the smaller menu. The old 6+ page book was proof of the saying the more you offer the less you offer well. Well try them for dinner soon, but its sad that JerCity has no more 24hr diners anymore for those who work til midnight.
Visited for the first time 42 years ago when I was a young girl, continued going for several years till I left NJ 20+years ago. I went back last week while visiting NJ with my 17 year old daughter who suggested going there for breakfast after listening to me talk about how much we enjoyed having coffee and breakfast there and remembering the good old times. We were not disappointed, the service was excellent (we chatted with the waiter for a while) the coffee was great, the breakfast delicious as it was when I first visited. V.I.P has stood the test of time.
Very friendly service. My order wasnt exactly correct but the mistake wasnt egregious since I liked what I had anyway. I asked the waiter to please bring out the Belgian waffle hot regardless of the rest of the food and by golly he did just that, so all was forgiven when he gave me corned beef hash but forgot my grits...lol. honestly good vibes.

The food was delicious. We order sandwiches from the Steak and take menu. My husband had not have a sandwiches from Steak and take in years. It was the excellent choice. Their sauce was amazing. Barshay I would like to thank you for the way you treated me and my husband. I definitely recommend this place. Nice music. We will be back.

One of the worse restaurants I have been to. One star is too much for this place. The sword fish we ordered was smelling and very dry.. definitely frozen almost 1 week old. Chicken was unbreakable. They were running out of most of the things. We also ordered lasagna which we returned as there was lot of water around it as it was just out of microwave so we returned it. I wouldn’t recommend this place.
The food here is so delicious! I love the whole place. I came during the weekend and it was So busy. It did take a while for our food to come out.

The worst i was really hugery when i went for breakfast at this place i been to many times before since i was a little girl. When we was hit with sandy i was there almost everyday. I havent been there in a few years so i thought i would treat myself. What a disappointment. Its dirty looks ran down. I knew i should have walked out. The home fries was cold and taste old the only thing that was hot and fresh was the eggs. Barshay is the new owner do better or just let the VIP RIP. Dont wast your time people i know i wont ever go back even the toast wasnt good. I wasted $10 would have been better off going to the corner bodega. So sad. Rip vip
PROS: This diner has been around for a few decades and everyone knows it from the area. They have large menus with good priced food which all tastes good for a diner. The place has a good amount of seating and fast service. They turn tables over quickly to get the rush in and the place is kept clean.CONS: The parking lot is tiny and tough to navigate in and out (and thats if youre lucky enough to find a spot). The bathrooms are small and will cause a backup if theres enough people in there. More importantly the staff doesnt look to happy. Anytime we go they always seem to be snippy towards us.OVERALL: I would go to this diner if I just wanted a quick bite to eat and if I was in the area, but I wouldnt drive out of my way to come here.
First time there under new management, enjoyed the atmosphere and the food i order was good, no complaints.
While visiting my Friend of 30+ years, we were walking around Jersey City and she had expressed she had wanted to try the food. So we decide to try it. When we went inside the Staff was welcoming and nice.I had a hard time deciding what to order. I took a picture of the menu because there was so many items to choose from. I decided on a gyro. When the order came, I didnt realize there was a complete salad instead of some lettuce on the sandwich.The Diner was clean and very simple, like the diners in the old days. I would go back when I visit my Friend again.

Food good,fair prices... but flies and no paper towels in rest room are a turn off. Rickety chairs, old interior, AC not working. Too bad. Needs a makeover or at least a cleaning.
I think our waitress was by herself, nothing went right. I have one day off go out to eat for breakfast to enjoy myself and she couldnt get anything together. Only the first time Ive been there

One visiting parent declared that “it was food.” The other one agreed it left them “vaguely satisfied.” A fried shrimp sandwich was served totally dry and with the tails still on. The BLT was mostly L. My tuna melt was.... adequate. No pickle on the side, though. Not a lot of care or attention to detail went into putting this meal together, and my expectations were appropriate, having eaten at many Jersey diners. The cherry pie was the highlight.I don’t know if covid has been hard on them out or if it’s just taken a general nose dive, but the meal was disappointing.

They are on their game and compliant with Covid prevention. Their outdoor dining set is Great. The service equals their awesome prices and delicious food! The waitress ( Kelly ) is a delight and the staff is attentive and consistent. Your order comes in To Go containers and cutlery when you dine their which I super appreciate. All in All... Great Place!!

Great variety of food and has parking. Went specifically for Chicken soup but was disappointed. It was not flavorful. They were also short handed and it took a while for service. However I would go back again and try a real entree. Everyone elses food looked delicious.
My entree was salmon, shrimp, sautéed spinach and garlic mash. The food was delicious and the hostess Eric, was phenomenal, checking back periodically to ensure all was well. I will definitely return for the rest of the menu was very appetizing. Five stars Mr. Barshay!
I’ve avoided this place after having dinner there around July and jumping out of my seat after seeing a mouse scurrying alongside the wall in my booth. It’s like a “shelf” space between booths and wall… It’s sad to say after so many years of eating here. But they seriously need an exterminator ASAP
Sad to say this once great diner has gone downhill badly. No air conditioning for months now.m and its 95 today. Ceiling tiles are missing and there was a mouse crawling under the table next to mine. Just miserable.

The food was very poorly represented cooked and everything I ordered a roast beef for coleslaw came back rub a rubber steak it wasnt even roast beef it was brown not brown like a grayish Brown and it wasnt even red it tasted rubbery and had a bad taste I didnt eat it the place is falling apart the bathrooms are falling apart and the ceilings when you go in dont even look very horrible

My whole pickup order was wrong.However, I went back and Barshay fix the problem..Food is pretty good, but like most restaurants, there are days, good and bad.
Everything was frozen and barely even warmed!! Got the order wrong and the waitress tried to blame it on the chef but it was obvious that she never even told him in the first place, drinks are so watery ! Food is frozen and then microwaved! Service is horrible!!

I recently visited 2 weeks ago and I have to say huge difference. I believe its under new management, food was absolutely delicious inexpensive and the service, I could not have asked for a better evening.
No wonder this place is always empty. My steak seemed spoiled, the onion rings were super soggy and I told the waiter twice that I was allergic to vegetables not to put any on my plate and guess what I get on my plate Vegetables! 🤦♂️ not once but twice! Honestly never taking my family here again! Sad because the people were really nice there.

Fairly straight forward diner. The coffee tasted very burned and the orange juice was not fresh. The ham and eggs were good.

We were staying near Journal Square for a week and were fortunate enough to walk into this place on our first night. Huge portions of great tasting food and not a lot of difference in the price from that of the local take aways! The staff were all excellent and made a great vibe in the place. We went back several times and were never disappointed..
For one, I ordered coffee and oatmeal. They did not have the rasin and fruit that I would want with my oatmeal but I still order it anyway the oatmeal wasnt properly done the coffee was lukewarm and a mouse ran across my feet while I was eating my oatmeal 😤
The first time was great few weeks ago...we had a choice of pancake or a toast bread along with our order of eggs, sausage and potato, now we came back today and those choices of pancake and toast are gone...only a toast of bread are offering....is that bcoz of a new management???? Very sad.

I read all the great reviews...but I dont really see it. The good is that the staff is friendly, the prices are very affordable, and the food IS filling. The bad is that the food was only lukewarm, and it was seriously under-seasoned and under-spiced. No one goes to a diner expecting a gourmet meal, and I wasnt. But I WAS hoping for hot food with a bit more taste than it had. Good enough if you happen to be nearby.
I know its Labor Day weekend but we got there at 1030am and we were sat immediately. Then we placed a order for coffee and juice. We waited over 10 minutes for the beverages and then we finally were asked by the waitress if we were served. We said yes but she also informed us that they only had (1) one cook. We would have to wait over a half hour for food. So we proceeded to leave. This DINER has gone down so much. Its really sad and we are very disappointed.

Its like 0.1 miles away from our home and we never went because we thought we would not get any vegetarian food but to our surprise, it has quite a few vegeterian options to choose from, you can have a pizza, pasta, veggie burger then quesadillas and tacos too. Apart from that they have really cool milkshakes which doesnt have egg in the icecream and thats what we ordered. We went there just for milkshakes and ordered strawberry and chocolate milkshake which were amazing. The quantity is good and so is the service as well and the price is not expensive as well. We would go again to try out food options and will post another review about food too.
The Service is amazing ! The waiters are very polite and upbeat! They are also super friendly and humorous! The booths are really comfortable, I didnt even want to get up ! The food is absolutely delicious. Its one of the best burgers Ive ever had! And the french fries were a perfect consistency, not too soft and not to crispy, but just right. I give this place 5 stars ! Very low-key, you could stop in for a quick bite, or a complete dinner. I got the best chicken noodle soup with crackers with my cheeseburger order.. HOW AWESOME. I was so stuffed and satisfied with everything. Also because its so low-key someone could conduct job interviews off to the side somewhere and you wouldnt even notice. So its a great place to handle business or pregame for an epic turn up ! The decor just makes you feel so comfortable and at home during the day, Im sure its lively and well lit in the evening hours of the night as well.
I stopped in with a friend for a late-night dessert. She had a creamy strawberry cheesecake. And I enjoyed chocolate blackout cake accompanied by a dish of super fresh-tasting whipped cream. The waitress was most friendly and attentive, despite the all-night night shift looming ahead. The accompanying decaf tea made it the perfect nightcap. Ive enjoyed similarly pleasant breakfasts and lunches at the VIP from time to time.
So happy Barshay is serving his all time favorite steak sandwich with that Stella sauce!! Just like old times!!
My sister n I were starving, with no where to go we ended up at the vip.we both had H.B.n f.f.s, they said a corp. Had bought restaurant. The burgers were really good. Havent been here in over a year.

The taste of most items on the menu is unsatisfactory- they arent well done. You could limit your order to beverages, desserts and some appetizers.I like the ambiance though- the vast area makes it roomy and is well lit at nights. You could certainly get here for its pleasing atmosphere and have a quick bite or two.The waitresses are all cheerful and service is good!
