Located on 30th street in between Dunedin and Coin Laundry is a tiny alley where you’ll see Atypical Waffle and Freshman Year sharing a space. Plenty of parking in this area.Since they are sharing a space with Freshman Year, Atypical Waffle is the line on the right and you’re greeted with someone at the counter. Use the QR code to bring up the menu. You order and pay before proceeding on to select your own seats. We asked for the most popular and got the Number Seven ($8.50) and Chicken and Waffles ($9.50). All the other waffles on the menu are sweet. We then went to look for seats and this place is so cute! All the furniture are mix matched and you have camping areas and private outdoor rooms. We sat at a table with college stadium seats. You can see the foldable arm table where students used to write on.Took about 35 minutes for our food to come. At first glance, I’m like “I think I’m still going to be hungry after this”. But I was wrong, it was the perfect portion and so good. The waffles reminded me of when I was in Belgium, eating Belgium Waffles off the street. It has the light, fluffy, crispy, crunch texture combined with a ton of candied bacon wrapped around a scope of avocado. I asked for goat cheese crumble on the side. Every bite was like a dream. I didn’t want it to end.The chicken and waffle tastes just as good and filling but with juicy chicken fritters. Topped with bacon bits and aioli sauce and maple syrup for that extra sweetness.I highly recommend this hole in the wall place. Also give Freshman Year a try while you’re waiting for waffles. Their menu seem to change often but they offer biscuits.
This place has very tasty sweet and savory waffles. I also loved the ambiance and the staff was nice. I went with our servers recommendation, the Veggie Waffle with a side of bacon. It was an incredible combination and I dont think the Veggie Waffle would have been as good without the side of bacon. These dishes arent huge portions but are packed with flavor and are great to split between you and your significant other or a friend. I enjoyed sitting in the stadium seats around the larger table. This restaurant has many rooms, nooks, crannies, and corners to sit in and each one is very interesting and fun. We will be back!
Good waffles and friendly staff. Food is fresh and tasty!
We live in Los Angeles but will visit Atypical anytime we are in town. The food is very good and has a really cool outdoor dining experience. If you looking for a simple and unique waffle breakfast you must visit this place. Its kid friendly and my wife prefers the coffee over Starbucks. Also they offer gluten free waffles.
Delicious food, fast and friendly service. Iced lattes are good. Chill and casual vibe
Delicious little hole in the wall. Cool environment. Highly recommend chicken and waffles.
HOLY WAFFLE! This place is hidden but worth the find! In my life I have never had a better waffle. They make them from sourdough and you can tell there is a lot of TLC in these delights. I ordered the original waffle and my sis got the chicken and waffles, wow, wow, wow, wow, woowwww!
On Thursday August 13 2020 it was right about brunch time and I was looking for a new place to enjoy a meal and found this place on Google maps . Finding the place was easy but parking was a pain because theres only parking on the street. The setting was really unique and I like that the entrance had the menu in large print on the wall. I ordered the vegan melt(as pictured) and it was pretty good, but the service was slow and not friendly.
Quirky waffle spot nestled next to a laundromat. There is outside seating with a very distinct hipster thrift store decor scattered throughout. Waffles are very good - I had both the Brie and jam waffle for a nice sweet/savory combo, as well as the blueberry and strawberry whipped cream topping. Staff is very friendly. Highly recommended!
I love this restaurant but I really cant support a business that is helping the fringe Save 30th folks. Please reconsider your support of that group so that I can return to patronize your business.
This beautiful little alley experience is nestled between the surrounding stores. Their selection clearly supports local eatery and breweries and the menu also contains some very thoughtful additions, such as a gluten free option for waffles that my girlfriend absolutely adores. Its so good to see a local business thrive with such a uniquely atypical model.
Yes this was an unexpected treat. I had waffle, avo, bacon, goat cheese and homemade lemonade is delish. Unbelievably affordable prices worth every single bite. The outdoor atmosphere is cozy and decor is so fun. Ill be back!
Sadly was looking forward to trying this place out but had a 40 min wait outside no big deal. But after we ordered we waited an additional hour to finally be served our two waffles and (bottled) drink. Which wouldn’t be that big if there was a lot of people inside and there wasn’t…. After I got up we saw they had at least 10 waffles prepped just needing the toppings. Am just really confused on why it took about an hour to get avocado on top of a waffle…. Very disappointed
I came here over the weekend and it wasnt super busy but steady. I ordered the chicken and waffles and there was a huge piece of hair on my dish when it came out. Although, this can happen at any restaurant I was able to see inside the kitchen and no one was wearing hair nets. I know you are not required to wear a hair net but, something should be done if you have really long hair and are preparing food. The waitress brought me a new dish, but other than that nothing was really done to go above and beyond to fix the mistake. The venue itself was pretty cool sort of an outdoor food truck concept. The portions were pretty small comparatively and the chicken and waffles was just average. The chicken was chicken nuggets think Tyson frozen. I would not come back to this restaurant due to overall cleanliness, value, and taste.**Edit - Just so everyone knows this place never gets me a refund. A man that does not do as he says is no man at all. Low IQ restaurant would never return it’s just dirty.
This place is delicious. They are continually expanding so things are always changing. I ordered the health nut which was bomb! The coffee isnt that great, its very acidic. Next time Ill get lemonade or stick with water. They could turn the music up to make the atmosphere more enjoyable. The waffles are amazing and you wont be disappointed.
Ive driven by here everyday for a very long time, but today at at request of my God daughter we finally went in. THEY ARE AWESOME!!! Their waffles are delicious and range from savory to sweet, they are super dog friendly and even have dog waffles and bacon sides. I would suggest this place to anymore. Their prices arent bad either. Definitely check them out if you like waffles or have ever noticed them driving by.
Tried gluten free waffle, strawberries were old. Partner ate the chicken waffles, served with microwaveable chicken nuggets. Not terrible but if feeling like waffles rather eat them at different location. Also they were out of 90% of the menu, and no cold water offered.Would say if trying to eat gluten freeOptions this is probably a great place.
If I were to describe what hipster dooface was this place would fit the bill. It is eclectic and fun but maybe trying a little too hard. It is literally the carport of a house. They do not have physical menus just a QR code at the entrance. No table service so it is a little awkward getting ordered. Each dish is the same basic waffle with different toppings. The food was ok. It did not blow my mind but it was enjoyable. We had a party of 8 and upon hearing portions were small most of us ordered two different waffles. They are priced on such a way that they makes sense. The food did not come out together. It was as if there is only one or two waffle irons. Water was in solo cups. I got the brie and jam which was literally a slice of brie on a waffle with jam on top. The jam seemed to be a pear jam- a little bland which did not really work with the blandness of brie and a basic waffle.
I really loved this place! I got the number 7. It was incredibly tasty. The flavours went together very well. Absolutely loved the cheese (wish it had a tad more, not enough for the whole waffle even though I spread it out). I also shared the berry and whipped cream one with my mom. It was amazing!! The waffle itself was delicious, the fresh berries and cream were such a sweet treat. Ive been wanting to go ever since I ran across it online last year but wasnt able to go as it was closed the last two days of my vacation. It was at the top of my list of places to try this trip and Im so glad we came! My girls loved theirs (nutella, berries, and whipped cream)! The strawberry lemonade is a bit to tart for me but thats just personal preference. I love the outdoor seating, the friendly atmosphere and hippie beach vibes. Its right up my alley! We got there at around 11 on a Wednesday, no wait to order and find a seat and the food didnt take too long to come out. Definitely recommend it and will be going back!
This is a must try in San Diego! The portion size is a little smaller which is great if you arent super hungry. I ordered the Cheddar Waffle Melt off of the seasonal menu and paired with a Nutella Chocolate Lovers. The Cheddar melt has a great taste of sweet and salty with the ham and cherry sauce combined. And the Nutella was a sweet way to start off the morning. The OJ is very fresh doesnt taste like its straight from a can and the ice coffee is great, a little stronger for the typical coffee drinker. The location is self is a literal hole in the wall but it definitely shines when being introduced to the neat art and decor. All of the art surrounding is very different but really brings the whole place together. Chris the person helping us out was very professional and on top of it. I would recommend to come early on the weekdays because I could totally see this place being very popular on the weekends. Overall would recommend.
It was ok. The vibe if the restaurant was really cool. The waffles themselves were just ok though. They are quite spendy for a very small waffle and you only get one. We ordered chicken and waffles and were surprised to see chicken nuggets on the waffle! We were expecting fried chicken as usual so that was disappointing.. The waffle itself had a nice little Chipotle kick so that was good. We also ordered their parfait waffles with the granola add on. It was very bland. Almost no flavor in the waffle itself and just plain yogurt. The most flavorful thing on the waffle was the granola which was extra cost. Overall, the vibe was cool but the food was too small of portions and mediocre at best.
Great waffles and the only thing better than the food was the service. Super friendly and welcoming staff. We ordered a waffle to go and when I went to pay they said I could have it for free 🙂
Awesome, off the wall place. Amazing waffles!!!
A little hard to find, but absolutely worth it. The waffles are perfection
This past Sunday, 8 December 2019, we woke up ravenous and too lazy to cook so brunch out it was. Weve been frequenting the same restaurants for the last couple of months and decided to go somewhere new. Waffles it was! Mostly because we finally caught Atypical open. They have unique hours so be sure to check the schedule before venturing.Ive always been a waffle fan. All the spongy goodness with a little crunch of texture on the outside...whats not to love? Nothing thats what. This is an outside patio cafe with open seating. It is covered after you walk up the driveway though. Their office is a cool Airstream that just looks like part of the decor. They have ballpark seats at a resin topped table which is where we sat. It is a great laidback spot for any day. The staff were all super friendly and dog lovers. We of course had the fluffy big girl with us blocking the walkway begging for pets and nibbles.Their selection of savory and sweet waffles all sounded phenomenal but I was in a savory mood. I ordered the Turkey sammie and he had the Number Seven (thats what its actually called). The Turkey sammie was oh man it was good. The waffle had a slight sweetness to it and with the melted cheese and pickled peppers it was yummy bite after bite. My mouth is watering right now remembering the taste. The Number Seven was avocado, feta, and brown sugar candied bacon on a delicious waffle. I had a few bites and again it was so darn tasty. The sweet char of the bacon with the rich feta and fresh avocado was perfect.Zelda, our 118 pound Akita, was treated to her own doggie waffle too. Not sure what was on it but she gobbled every single bite the staff fed to her. Thanks for the great meal and hospitality, AW! Well be back soon!
Pleasantly surprised with this kitschy little waffle hole in the fence. Very tasty waffles, both traditional sweet, and surprisingly tasty savory (avocado, goat cheese and maple bacon on a waffle? Yes, it works...) fun space feels like a bit like the morning after a backyard campout. Knowledgeable (yes, about waffles) and friendly staff. Will definitely return. Note its a bit hard to find - its just South of the laundromat.
I am giving this place 5 stars because its a unique local breakfast place that I really recommend when visiting San Diego. Though they only serve waffles, they serve the BEST WAFFLES in town which compensates for the lack of variety in the menu. Their waffle is simply the star of the show which is really good even without putting syrup or anything else. But they also made really good combinations especially the Lox Waffle which is a must try. Also the ambiance is very laidback and chill which is perfect if you just wann sit back and enjoy your food.
Can’t believe I waited so long to come here! This place gets an A+ for atmosphere. Very unique and different, especially when compared to some of the other SD spots which seem to hire the same interior designer. Food was very solid: small, filling and full of flavor. Overall, I could tell a lot of love was put into this establishment.
Sooooooooo gooooooood!!!Essentially waffle sandwiches in a backyard setting. Super chill. Great, and I mean GREAT waffles. Sourdough something something. I dunno. Im not a waffle expert. All I can tell you is they are delicious with a croissant texture. We got the Number Seven and the Turkey Sammie. Both were excellent.Super cool seating arrangement. Feels like a backyard party. Private tables and group tables. An Airstream, grass (turf) and fire pits.Loved it. Will be back.
3 stars because I had high expectations. I lived in Germany for 3yrs (05-08) and visited Belgium often. I know what the street waffles are supposed to taste like. These are too dense and yeasty. But its close. Maybe because theyre using an ancient recipe idk. I also didnt care for their chicken and waffles, something about the nugget style meat and seasoning was a clash to the waffle (yes Ive had good chicken& waffles before). So I guess it was just ok, all my family members agreed.
Really cute place with a lot of character. Waffles were delicious!!
-Slightly understaffed-Some of the waffles didn’t come with syrup when they should have.-table was not cleaned at all when we were sat.- had very hairy pets sat right next to usThis place was not well managed
First time I stopped by & got in line, they ran out of waffles the group in front of us. I was definitely annoyed because I was so looking forward to these amazing waffles that my bf had told me about. Almost told myself I wouldnt go back because what kind of waffle place runs out of waffles?! But, my bf said they were really good, so we tried again 2 weekends later & am so glad we did. They were literally THE BEST waffles Ive ever had in my life. They actually melt in your mouth. Would definitely recommend their Number 7 (waffle topped with bacon, avocado & goat cheese). Also really good was their Nutella waffle with strawberries. Lemonades also yummy. They are only open a few days a week and theyre situated basically in a hallway/alley next to a laundromat. From the street, you pretty much only ever see the line. Be sure to go early. If you call and ask them what time they close, theyre trained to tell you 3 pm...or when we run out. And they WILL run out.
The waffles are really good, I had the vegan one. Its an interesting vibe in there. They tried to make it outdoorsy and cool but it ended up a little bit of a dirty outdoor picnic vibe
My favourite spot for breakfast or brunch. I bring all of my friends who visit California here. Try the chicken and waffles.
All around awesome, try it and you will see.....
Such delicious waffles. Cute dining area and kid friendly. No eggs or hot chocolate tho:(. Otherwise great!!
My partner and I saw that they have vegan waffles options so thats the reason we came there. When we arrived, we were very disappointed to discover that the menu is very small and you barely have options for toppings on the waffles. The place was dirty including the tables and chairs. We waited about 25 minutes for our two tiny waffles to arrive. The dishes arrived with plastic silverware which was really hard to use in order to cut the waffle. The texture was horrible, it felt like eating a cardboard. That was a terrible experience. Were not going to come back there.
One of the best hidden spots in all of San Diego. I always describe this place to friends and family as being San Diego in a nutshell. The seating is something extra unique, its all abandoned/repurposed stuff like stadium seats, skateboards, chairs that look straight outta the 50s, etc. Super laid back, casual dining. Its unique delectable menu options, affordable prices, amazing staff, chill vibes, and overall amazing customer experience make this place an easy 5/5.Eat here! Trust me! You wont regret it!
Bit expensive for what you get but Liege waffles arent easy to find in the US. Got a waffle with whip cream and strawberry, toppings where a bit scant.
My initial impression having been here once is that it could be really cutesy.....ON A NICE AND SUNNY DAY. All of the very limited seating is outdoors which is partially covered and partially not covered. You walk up from the street, order at the little desk/podium, pay, and then seat yourself. Theres no music playing which makes the experience awkward as a lone diner. Due to the limited seating, I get why theres a wait to sit after even youve ordered. Seemed like many got their food togo. Theres a fire pit in the back of the place. When your order is ready its walked out to you by the staff using your name. Although what I had was really delicious, its quite small of a serving for what I paid. This is definitely one of those “every once in a while places. As Im finishing this review, its starting to rain so I decided to leave.
Small cute place .. its like a speakeasy place for breakfast.
Was nearby and wanted to try something new. Came across this place and was very intrigued by the appearance of the places along with the food. I ordered a Number Seven as its called, comes with bacon baked on brown sugar, goat cheese and avocado. I know it may sound odd but it was amazing. Also order Coconut lemonade to go along with. Was not disappointed with either. Looking forward to come here again.
Undercooked waffle, and we were almost the only ones there. We are catching a flight so there was no time for remedies..if it wasnt undercooked, it would have probably been amazing!
They have waffles and even vegan options!
Comfortable setting, and relaxed atmosphere. The food is exceptionally delicious which had each of us proclaim our satisfaction as we took our first bites. The hostess is very kind, and accommodating to the guests. I never thought Id be so impressed, or delighted by waffles.
Good for a quick bite to eat, with high quality ingredients. If you like waffles, try atypical.
Love this place!! If I still stayed in Cali I would never eat a waffle anywhere else!! The staff was always so friendly!! Met one of the owners or managers on a day they were close at another shop. I was in line and told the cashier I had no idea what to get because I really wanted to go the Atypical waffle company and the only reason I was there was because they were closed. I came up to me introduced himself and gave me a card for a free waffle. That was my first time and loved it until I left Cali!!
