Awesome local dive shop. We got certified and had Patrick as our sensei... I mean instructor. Well for sure be continuing with more courses through the shop and requesting Patrick to continue to guide us on our scuba adventures. He was really a great teacher and the class size was nice and small, too. He also continues to be an awesome resource for scuba knowledge even after the class, always willing to chat and answer additional questions via text, e-mail, or phone call. A rad dude, no doubt!Scuba gear is expensive by nature, we came to quickly discover. We spent a good bit more than we expected to, but compared to other shops, they have good pricing on the gear in there and the staff running it are all chill and great to work. They also rent good quality gear, not old and tattered bottom of the barrel junk which only further helped us feel safe and cozy in the water. This is our new go-to dive shop for sure.
Had an AMAZING experience doing two days guided dives with Pauline - one day at La Jolla Shores, one day at La Jolla Cove. The whole staff in the shop was very sweet and knowledgeable about the sites and gear. Pauline was amazing for the one-on-one dive: super friendly, very informative and went out of her way to make sure I had two days of excellent diving.
Awesome team and instruction. Highly recommend for any trips or certifications. They also have quality gear and a super convenient location.
Did my SSI Open water training with them. Class size is limited to 6 people. Training was comprehensive and I was equipped with the knowledge I needed to dive independently.(With a buddy) All the instructors are really passionate about diving! Our last open water training dive was cancelled due to water conditions, Kumar made it his personal mission to get me certified before my trip to Maui. Thanks Kumar!I recommend getting gear fitted in store, their prices are about the same as online prices. My scuba mask, that was fitted by Kumar, fits and works perfectly!
I had an amazing experience doing BLAs Open Water Scuba Certification course. The course: We received really comprehensive learning material via the SSI app and took a short written test. Two days were in the pool learning skills, and two days were at La Jolla Shores practicing/testing skills in the ocean. I loved that they limit the group size to 6 people because it almost feels like a private lesson. The scuba guru: Patrick was our instructor, and he was amazing! (And not just because hes the octopus whisperer and found a baby octo on our first ocean dive.) He was so great at thoroughly explaining everything and demonstrating each skill. When anyone had problems, he was very hands-on and used multiple approaches to explain things. He was a wonderful teacher and guide. I was impressed with how patient he was, while holding us to a high standard of safety and skill. After taking the course, I feel confident in my diving abilities and am eager to learn more. I would love to take more specialty courses with Patrick! The cost: Originally, I purchased a Groupon for the course, which was a great deal for two people. You should be prepared for additional costs to purchase personal equipment (mask, snorkel, fins, boots, and gloves) and to rent the major gear (BCD, regulator, weights, dive computer, hood, and tanks). Although I spent more than I originally thought I would, Im confident that all my gear is high quality. BLA has very comparable pricing to online sales, and with the 10% discount from being in the course, I was happy to support a local business. Im eager to continue my scuba education through their specialty course packages, which are quite reasonable considering the skill and experience of their instructors.
Courteous, extremely helpful, and overall outstanding.Excellent rental gear, phenomenal instructors. Friendly, and have I said helpful? Very helpful. I recommend Beyond Land Adventures without reservation.
My husband and I did our SSI Open Water training with BLA. The training was very comprehensive and thorough in all aspects of being safe that we feel like we are ready to dive independently! Pauline was super friendly and great during our pool sessions. Patrick was very down to earth, knowledgeable and patient with me during the ocean dives and the whole experience exceeded our expectations. We had an amazing time and learning experience that we cant wait to continue our SSI training through them!! Highly recommend Beyond Land Adventures for any of your diving needs.
If youre looking to get your Scuba Certification stop your search now. Beyond Land Adventures made it fun, safe, and informative. From the first time I went to the shop to inquire, and all throughout the training. The staff is super knowledgeable both about the diving itself and equipment. An added bonus is how involved they are after your certification. They offer a ton of additional training and alumni dives to keep you in the water.
If youre fortunate enough to get Pauline as your instructor than you will be able to enjoy the happiness she exudes in to each person, activity, and lesson she provides. However, if you do not have the pleasure of enjoying such an excellent human, the other Beyond Land Adventures team members are uniquely skilled and friendly as well. Likewise they work, instruct, and assist efficiently as individuals and team members.I give the entire experience 5 stars, as the entire Beyond Land Adventures team is knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. The gear is in good condition, lightly used as expected, they provide extra gear if maybe youre too tall and too skinny. The facilities and locations for the dives are excellent.
Lady works there by the name of Dafney. Really nice very helpful.
Beyond Land Adventures is amazing. class sizes are no more then 6 people so you can really learn the skills and the instructor has the time to really teach you. I had Chris Fischer and i highly recommend you take his course Open Water if you are just beginning.
Great experience so far. Teachers are great. Prices are reasonable. The Catalina excursion was super fun!
Where do I even start with this wonder of a place?!The staff were the most fun, helpful, and patient people Ive ever had the pleasure of dealing with. I was a complete novice when I entered the doors to their establishment, and they were incredibly kind and helpful. They took extra care in making sure my rental gear fit me well and suited my needs, and safety was their first priority. These lovely people worked tirelessly to fit my schedule, and I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH how accommodating they were. My vacation was brief, so they went miles out of their way to help me get my certification in just a few days. Thanks to these people, I got my SCUBA Certification (60m).They made it clear that there was going to be hard work, and there sure was, but they were guiding and helping me every step of the way. I was terrified at first, but with their help, I was comfortable and even having loads of fun!The dives themselves were phenomenal. My dive instructors (Kumar and Ben) were so knowledgeable, and picked the perfect spots for me to dive. On my first dive, the spot was too stormy and it was not suitable conditions. Rather than cancelling the dive, they immediately relocated to a backup divesite. We spent time doing training exercises and stuff, and I felt a lot more confident for the second dive.On the second dive, it was the same location where the first was originally going to be. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I saw a sculpin, two stingrays, hundreds of fish, sea sponges, and much more.We also went on a third dive at Catalina Island, and I saw many fish and a lot of other things.Trust me, these are the guys you want to go with. I had such a good experience with them, I felt safe, comfortable, accommodated, and really had a lot fun. Recommend them for sure!
Ive made two purchases from Beyond Land Adventures since arriving in San Diego, and its their friendly staff that brought me back each time! Theyre knowledgeable, patient, and offer great advice tailored to your budget. If youre new, intermediate, or an expert, go to Beyond Land Adventures for the best deal possible!
Ive always watched videos of scuba diving and the mesmerizing underwater marine life always intrigued me - that being said Beyond Land Adventures very own Kumar gave us very informed and fun training, overall I will rate it 9/10 - 1 point missing for the mistakes we did during the training! (:-D).You guys are awesome, keep it up! I am so glad that Ive started exploring the other side of the world!
What a great experience and beyond landed ventures truly exceeded my expectations. Stephanie was a very patient and extremely thorough leader and teacher in all aspects of teaching us how to be safe but also have fun.I cannot recommend this enough and Kumar the owner is very hands-on as well. A great and fun experience to get started
Incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff. Will absolutely be coming back for more gear and classes in the future.
Great shop with great instructors!! Have gone through several specialty courses with them and each instructor has been professional, supportive, and encouraging. I will definitely continue to take courses with Beyond Land Adventures.
I had an awesome time. It was a lot more comfortable and easy than I expected! Ben was my instructor and he was very obvious he cared and was all about safe fun.
I had some amazing adventures with the crew from BLA. My journey has just begun and I need to thank Ben and Kumar. Everyone there was super friendly and positive. It was a great experience and I will tell everyone I know that Beyond Land Adventures is a fantastic place to get certified.
Unethical Business, please dont support. Here is my experience:While I was in town I hired a dive instructor and rented all gear from Beyond Land Adventures. When gearing up I asked my dive instructor to help me figure out how to get the weights into the vest because it wasnt what I was used to. He put them in for me. Shortly after getting into the water past the waves, while trying to descend, I was not descending even when the BCD was fully out. The weights had fallen out. My dive instructor told me it was not my fault, but for coming out they would still have to charge me a small fee for snorkeling or something. I thought that was fair and went about my day.Beyond Land later insisted for charging me the full price >$300, again for 0 dive time in the pacific, to make up for the lost weights. Will be using someone else on my next trip.
Great program, awesome location and very knowledgeable team of professionals. The entire course went smooth and easy. Highly recommend 👌
I had an awesome experience in learning to scuba with BLA. They have a dedicated and professional staff that made the whole experience even more fun and enjoyable. I will be coming back to get additional certifications.
Great staff, fun and educational curriculum. Ben is a great instructor!
Nice owner. not so good employees. Fair to say that the shop is good but there are lots of contract workers and they seem not caring so much about anything. Rent equipment but they forgot my fins one time and gloves another time. Instructor even told me to not trust guys at the dive shop. what am i paying the money for? talked to owner a few times, and he is very reasonable person, but he only comes occasionally. The problem is, as you can see, is other shops around are mostly operated by families, which means the owner are really running a business for profit, but this ones structure is more like a start-up, self-owned business. The owner gathers a group of people that may not so care about what he is trying to do.So do not be surprised you receive different quality of service each time you come. You may have a decent instructor or you may meet a bad one, and it all depends on your luck. Running a business really need some strategies.
My daughter and I found ourselves in San Diego with some spare time so we started scouting for some last minute opportunities to get wet. We called Beyond Land Adventures (BLA) and arranged for a 2-tank La Jolla Canyon dive tour. Since we had not really prepared to dive, most of our essential gear was rented from BLA. BLA owner, Kumar, and his shop staff (Ben - a full-time SCUBA dude) are friendly and very accomodating. Rental equipment is largely SCUBAPRO and in reasonably good shape. Diving early Saturday, we stopped by the BLA shop Friday afternoon to fit our wetsuits and pick-up gear. Equip pickup was very orderly and organized. Saturday morning we met Kumar at the designated dive spot. Kumar gave a very comprehensive dive briefing and was always alert to safety checks and anything that seemed out of the ordinary. Nothing seem to phase Kumar or the BLA team. Even though I discovered a critical problem at 10:00PM on Friday night, Kumar hit the shop early Saturday morning to get a replacement piece of equipment. To me, Kumar went above and beyond to ensure that the experience we had with BLA was the best it could be.
Upon walking in there were 3 guys working not one person said hello or asked me if I needed any help. One guy was helping other customers so no biggie, one was just sitting on his computer giving me a dirty look and another guy just sat there doing nothing. This alone made me want to walk out. There selection was small so we left. Come on guys if you run a shop have the decency to say hello to your customers and greet them with a smile. One star for you maybe you will learn how to treat paying customers after this review.
I dont write a lot of reviews but some of other reviews I read here are not accurate probably because theyre way out of date. I can tell you these guys are great. You do not have to buy the equipment in order to participate in the certification classes although you will need a mask and a snorkel. Everything else you can rent. My instructor, Patrick, clearly has a passion for scuba. You can tell immediately he and the other instructors care very much about your safety, they take a comprehensive approach to the certification program, and the classes are small. There are only five people in our group. Finally, prices are reasonable for the instruction and they offer a discount on equipment.
I was in San Diego for a convention and asked Beyond Land Adventures to put a diving itinerary together for me. Their new shop location is located just ten minutes by car away from the airport. You can easily pick up anything you need on your way from the airport to your accommodation. We ended up going out with a dive boat for two dives to see the kelp forests first. We dove Chriss Rock and Connors Canyon from that boat but the current was so strong that all the kelp had been pushed to the seafloor. Following that, we did shore dives at the Marine Room, South Wall and a night dive at La Jolla. The night dive at La Jolla was my favorite. Kumar, Patrick, and Seth were all wonderful! The rental BCD I had was also in very good shape and it was a fantastic experience overall! Next time I am in San Diego, I will definitely go diving with these guys again and I recommend that you do too. :-)
My friend and I were visiting from the Midwest, and wandered into here after viewing the Excellent fish/pet shop next door. Very friendly service, excellent new rental gear, fair rental prices (better than fair given how new). We shore dove at The Marine Room. Thanks, Kumar!
I got my open water certification with Beyond Land Adventures. I had been wanting to get certified for quite some time and I couldnt have asked for better instructors!Dan and Kumar definitely know their stuff. When I went to get the basic materials for the class they were very helpful. They explained what I would need and why it was the best fit for me. While I was there they had a sparse inventory but were able to order anything that they didnt immediately have on hand. The certification class itself was a lot of fun! Kumar was informative and took his craft seriously but he didnt have a stuck up attitude like other dive instructors I considered. He made me feel very comfortable in the class.I plan on going back to Beyond Land Adventures not only for the gear that I will need but for the community that they are building. Everyone coming into the shop was very friendly and it seemed like a good community to get plugged into.
Not GreatMy wife and I bought a Groupon for scuba certification lessons. We had to sign up for a class that was 6 months away. Then, we had to buy $1500 worth of scuba equipment. FIFTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS worth of equipment to find out that the sport isnt for us.We used the equipment we purchased there at our pool sessions. It never touched the salt water. They wont take it back and suggested we sell it on Craigslist. My suggestion to anyone looking to get certified at Beyond Land Adventures is to buy your equipment second hand or look for some other shop where you can rent a mask, snorkel, fins, boots and gloves without paying top dollar at their shop. We got taken for a ride.
What a good time cant wait to go back!!!!
Good people, nice trips.
Love the shop and the people!
