I really wanted to like this place more. The texture of the ice cream was great. So creamy! I tried strawberry and Mexican chocolate. I thought they both lacked flavor. I also tried the chocolate and that was good but nothing mind blowing. Wife got a banana split and she thought it was good. The prices were solid. Overall, it was okay but Id much rather go to other local shops. Im still undecided if Ill go back. The staff was nice.
Family owned and 25+ flavors every weekend. A flavor to please every family member. Be adventurous, try the Mexican hot chocolate and raspberry ripple. Yum yum.
What this little neighborhood ice parlor lacks in size, it more than makes up in taste and selection. They crank out home churned.ice cream in a huge assortment of flavors. We stopped by while taking our pup for a walk. I have seen this place many times as I drive on Adams and every single time there are people waiting outside.Because of COVID they are only serving one party at s time and enforcing social distancing while you wait. This time as we passed by there was not a single person in line so we tested ourselves to a cone each. Let me tell you, the heath toffee crunch I ordered was absolutely delicious. It was creamy and sweet with a hint of coffee with plenty of crushed toffee and nuts. I ordered it on a waffle cone and was not at all disappointed. I understand the lines now. These folks here are crafting incredibly good ice cream. If you are in the Normal Heights area, give them a try. I cant wait for summer to kick into gear.on those hot and muggy nights to go back for more. They are open late and that bodes well for those of us who want a sweet treat on a warm summer night.
Quaint local ice cream shop with lots of character. All homemade flavors made by hand with a variety of topping and made to order requests. Excellent taste at an excellent price!
Great unique flavors. Excellent ice cream. Staff was friendly and very helpful with selection. Recommended to all.
I AM A local ice cream connoisseur. I have tried all san diego ice parlors. Unfortunately, this places ice cream lacks flavor. The texture was often icy with a lingering ingredient taste that i wouldnt quite call vanilla. I ended up throwing half of it away it was not good. WHAT thus place lacks in quality it makes up for in character. Who knows. I support small business but if you like creamy satisfying ice cream this is probably not the place for you.
Flavors tried this time: Mexican Chocolate and Cookies nmint.A welcoming, family shop. They are small and cozy and you can listen to childrens laughter while you enjoy your ice cream. The ice cream itself is good. It has its own texture, really light and soft, and its savor is subtle.Mexican Chocolate was kind of a blended mix of chocolate and vanilla. Its pleasant and calm.Cookies nmint were good on the combination of cookies and cream texture, but the mint flavor was artificial and a bit too strong, so it covered the others. On both, excessive sugar was not a problem.. you can eat the whole bowl without getting overloaded by it.Go to the shop and enjoy some peaceful moments.
Best ice cream in all of San Diego. Our favorites: rum raisin, cookies & cream and coffee by the pint. We also go for the vanilla and mexican chocolate ❤
I love Mariposa Ice Cream Shop! Anna, the owner, is so welcoming, as are the staff, and the ice cream is wonderful! We have been going to the shop for well over 8 years, and my mom lives for their coffee milkshakes and the sundaes.
Charming store! BEST homemade ice cream on the west coast
My top choice in San Diego for ice cream. My favorites are Mexican Chocolate and Rocky Road! They also have gluten free waffle cones 😍. Staff is very nice. The cookies and ice cream have recently become a new favorite.
Love it, it’s our favorite place to get ice cream!! We go almost every week to get a double scoop of rum raisin for him and a double scoop of banana walnut for me. Having it in a waffle cone is a must! And the staff there are super friendly!
Great ice cream! Most homemade places dont have chocolate chip cookie dough, so glad that yall did and that the dough is in such big chunks!!!
A one-of-a-kind collection. The place is immaculately clean and well-presented. Every flavor on the menu made me want to try a scoop and it was difficult to limit myself to only one.
Very good glad theyre back
Family ice cream that serve delicious flavors. The sundaes are my favorite!
Lots of unique flavors made from scratch.
We where always welcomed with a smile and even thou we only discovered it our last day in town I had ice cream here twice. Lots of delicious ice cream choices, good recommendation from the ladies working here.
Mariposa makes the best ice cream in San Diego!
Employees are very cordial and attentive. Handmade ice cream with rotating flavors on the menu. Very chill, laid back vibe with the walls covered with eclectic posters of 60s & 70s musical groups & singers plus sports memorabilia.
SUPER delicious and cute spot! The only place I go to for ice cream in San Diego. Worth it guys!! recommend cookies n cream and their specialties. Hand made ice cream is the only way!
Best ice cream and malts in san diego.
The best homemade ice cream in San Diego. The staff is super friendly and you cannot beat their awesome traditional flavors. Their malts are great and so was their vegan mixed berry sorbet
There are plenty of flavors to choose from. The rates are the highest and you even get the same price for an extra cookie and chocolate topping (white or black).
Overpriced, Ice Cream was nothing special, tasted like they scooped it out of a grocery store tub.
Best neighborhood ice cream parlor around. I go out of my way to stop in here. They are very friendly, have great ice cream and fair prices. Five stars all the way.
Entered near nine, it wasnt busy. the service was very helpful and welcoming. prices that are reasonable.
Good ice cream flavors and there are many varieties on it, I really like it
Friendly staff, tasty ice cream
Best ice cream place in San Diego! Homemade and fresh.
Nice!! Busy but for a reason. This icecream is sooo good!! Orignal flavor, i got the walnut banana and it tasted like banana bread as icecream. They also go coconut and it had real coconut shavings in it. My boyfriend got mexican chocolate and it tasted like a cup of abuelita in icecream. Yummy and they serve big sevings too.
Fresh waffle cones and a frequent flyer punch card!!
Delicious homemade ice cream. A neighborhood staple. My mouth waters every time I walk by.
Omg love this homemade neighborhood ice cream shop!! The owners are always there or in the back making the ice cream! The banana, coconut and coffee are my favorites but all the flavors are delicious!
Lovely little ice cream shop. All house made! Try the Mexican chocolate
Many flavours, not just chocolate and vanilla like in supermarkets. And so different than ordinary ice cream. After this i only want self made ice cream.
The most delicious ice cream ever, this isn’t like any other ice cream it leves you happy instead of feeling bad that you got 2 scoops. Truly art. 100% would recommend to everyone ever.
I scream you scream we all scream for ice cream
I had a one scoop sundae with chocolate ice cream and strawberry sauce. Loved the creamy ice cream! Would recommend that they use crushed strawberries instead of strawberry sauce (the contrast between the fruit and chocolate would be heavenly).Definitely going back!
Best ice cream in all the land. Go there. Or dont. Either way they make awesome ice cream.
Yummy and fun.
Good ice cream quality and the most of it are perfect
Awesome homemade icecream!! Highly recommended! Friendly and delicious! We got a banana split and brownie sundae!
The wait is over! A teammate at work told me about this place several months ago. The ice cream is fantastic. Sample what looks good and then pick a scoop! Suggestions...vanilla! Made with Mexican vanilla and is amazing. Coconut....omg! The chocolate or the Rocky road or the white chocolate raspberry. I could go on. The friendliest service on the block. Well be back.
One of the best ice cream places ever. They are a family owned business and use the freshest ingredients in their ice cream. This is a real secret and treat for those who live in and are visiting San Diego. One of my favorite ice cream places of all time.
Good homemade ice cream and its been around for many decades.
Omg their ice cream was sooo amazing especially the cookie dough! 10/10 recommend. Stop going to a chain spot and get Mariposa!
I am glad I found this place - its a family run shop with a delicious offering. Get the sundae for an old school feel! Also, their website is awesome - it contains info about specials and even coupons for one of the flavors!
This place is incredible. Every flavor is just amazing and blows me away. Ive never tasted anything like their ice cream. My personal favorite is Papanasi. Oh my. I could eat this everyday. My new favorite ice cream flavor ever. German chocolate cake is also one to try.
I saw this place while waiting on an order next door and Im glad I came across it. Everything here tastes amazing, including the random special flavors. The staff here are super nice and more than patient while youre deciding what to get. The shakes are delicious, and will leave you wanting more. Whatever you order from here, get two of them because when the first ones gone youll be wanting more.
Bland and not good vegan flavors
Stopped in 10 minutes before close. The employees were more than welcoming interacting with all us including my kids. The ice cream is really good! Will definitely visit again if in the area.
Nice place to think about business. I had a brother come into town and he asked me to go back here. The place has a great atmosphere. Mood here reminds me of San Diegos scene.
Best ice cream in town. Homemade
Nice vibe and staff....a real community business, with the walls covered with pictures and tributes. Mostly typical flavors but some creative twists. Mexican Chocolate was good but flavors could have been bolder and richer. Very reasonable prices.
Fast, friendly service, delicious options, and amazing ice cream/sundae/pie choices for anyone looking for the ultimate dessert experience. This is by far my favorite ice cream parlor in the area and a go-to for any celebratory occasion.
This is our go-to ice cream place. Dick and Anna are wonderful. They are very supportive of local schools, local causes, and local politics. They make all of their own ice cream and waffle cones. This means that a given flavor may vary slightly over time. The selection is good. The list on the board includes all the current flavors, the freezer case doesnt list the flavors hiding underneath. The decor is a collection of many things. They have a lot to look at while you eat your ice cream. The store is small with limited seating. This generally isnt a problem except during very busy times.Id give Mariposa two spoons up!
Definitely one of the best places in the area.
Wow! Delicious ice creams! I love the Mexican Chocolate... ¡Mas! Mas!
They have the most amazing waffle cones. a long time favorite. Deliciously enjoyable
Love love love this place. LEGIT old school ice cream joint. I didnt know places still served banana splits until I came to Mariposa. This is definitely worth the stop. Friends and I came here to try all the different flavors--we ordered the Mexican chocolate, strawberry, and of course the banana walnut, which was my favorite. We also ordered a few banana splits and that was a great choice.
Flavors change daily. Biggest challenge for our kids is deciding which flavors to get. They remembered it from last trip to San Diego 6 years ago to visit a friend, and its still good!
I look forward to a return trip. This place has a great feel to it. Menu is like a place in San Francisco I liked.
The ice cream was delicious. But the best part of this place is the staff and its super unique decor. Its old school, very homy, and feels like its your good old neighbor working (which it in fact is). Its one of those places that you want to stay open forever. The cones are made/cooked in house.
Best home made ice cream in San Diego!
Absolutely my most favorite ice cream spot -- no exaggeration -- in the world. Theyre just really great people, and their ice cream is handmade wonderful stuff. The White Chocolate Raspberry Ripple is amazing. But if youre more of a chocolately type, then try their Putter Finger. I have no idea how they get Butter Finger to work so well in their ice cream, but they do it and REALLY well.
Ive tried a few different flavors here and one of my favorite things about the ice cream is that it is not overly sweet. Its just a great neighborhood spot for a scoop. There are some seating areas inside and a couple outside as well. Though it is not my absolute favorite ice cream shop, I have not been disappointed by the flavors Ive tried so far.
Nice vibe and staff....a real community business, with the walls covered with pictures and tributes. Mostly typical flavors but some creative twists. Mexican Chocolate was good but flavors could have been bolder and richer. Very reasonable prices.
This is owned and operated by some of the nicest people Ive ever met and their ice cream is phenomenal! Im not able to eat dairy any more and they STILL have options for me.Cant ask for a better family-owned place, its easily my favorite ice cream spot!
Great crew. You wait outside only one customer at a time
Two words: Mexican Chocolate. I love coming to Mariposas. It is hands down the best ice cream in San Diego. It is even better than Thrifty. The people working there are always very friendly. You can try any of their flavors before you buy. They dont have over 30 flavors, but they dont need to. What little they have all works well. The prices are reasonable for what you get. The ice cream is hand made, so it is always fresh, creamy, and it just has that great natural taste and feeling. If you havent been here yet, you need to! Dont forget to check their hours of operation. Most of the time the earliest they open is 1PM.
I like this mom and pops ice cream parlor. Wanted to try something different than ice cream franchise and this is a great place to build your own ice cream. I enjoyed the banana split and was awesome and giant. Prices are affordable and they have week specials.
Theyre very good with a lot of good flavors. Their waffle cones are usually very nice & crunchy. Its very affordable. 2 one scoops in waffle cones for $8.
This is now my favorite go-to ice cream place!! Although I wish they had a bigger variety of flavors to choose from and samples, I think its cool how they make their ice cream on the spot. Not just that but I love the area, and its really nice how they have an outdoor seating!! The texture of the ice cream is what really drawn me in..DEFINITE FIVE STARS!!!!
Talk about amazing ice cream! I was so thrilled and amazed at the flavor profile that I wanted to go back and get seconds the same day, but you have to watch out for those calories! I would recommend to anyone!
Went there as a kid, they are the best people in the world, it’s family own! The ice cream is soo good please support this local business
Mom and pop ice cream shop. A great mix of traditional and unique flavor options. Best thing is the service - family owned and friendly every time we visit. Certainly miss the Ice Cream Man behind the counter, but there is simply no other choice in town for great ice cream and good vibes. Their Temecula location is also awesome.
Tasty ice cream, a ton of flavors to choose from, and friendly service.
The Mexican Chocolate ice cream flavor is delicious. Love coming here with friends and family.
Excellent homemade in shop! Peach is supreme in summer. Both vegan flavors, banana and berry are topnotch. Worth the drive from all directions.
Awesome place great place for unique ice cream. It was treat to remember it had that old flavor ice cream shop like you been going for decades.
Mairposa Ice Cream may have a few celebrity fans (Kristen Bell and Will Farrell), but it has thousand and thousands of fans in the residents of San Diego. Its a small ice cream shop on the east end of Adams Avenue Park. The founder used his grandfathers ice cream recipe from decades ago and the result is some of the best handmade ice cream in San Diego.Sadly, the owner has since passed, but his cousin now runs the shop and is as passionate as he is friendly. He explained that the store closes every Monday to churn gallons and gallons of ice cream. Then they open their shop the rest of the week and sell out each day quickly.I ordered the chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream and it was perfectly creamy. The manager mentioned they dont use butter making it less sweet yet still full in flavor. If you want a friendly experience with great ice cream, head to Mariposa Ice Cream.
Staff is excellent... Ice cream is wonderful
Delicious, high quality ice cream, made in-house. Definitely a must visit shop. The scoops are well served and the prices are reasonable. After eating here, all other ice cream will be bland in comparison.
The free-love decorations give this place a great vibe. The ice cream is delicious and be prepared to struggle if you order a banana split. There are a few tables so theres room to sit and enjoy dessert. Parking can be difficult though since they dont have a lot. Good place to hang out with a friend.
Delicious ice cream
Im in love 😍 hard to find a small town feel in such a busy city but here it is! The people are so sweet and loving and the vibes here are so inviting. 10/10 would recommend.
As a self proclaimed ice cream connoisseur (I just really like ice cream) this was delicious! And the inside of the place looks really cool. All around-- awesome!
Hands down BEST ice cream in San Diego. Personal favorites are Mexican hot chocolate and cookie & mint.
The ice cream here is as good as everyone says. I had the pumpkin and eggnog flavors. I just wish I had found this place before the night I was leaving. Ill definitely be back next time.
Always a great variety of delicious ice cream flavors!
Delicious, refreshing ice cream. My family and I got shakes and malts. Highly recommend for something local, different and delicious.
Met Dick for the first time back in May of 2014. Found our he is a Navy veteran and thats all it took for him to open up with his sea stories of when he served. Unfortunately he has passed on to next life and will be missed. His ice cream was and still is the best. He made once made a watermelon sorbet, not because he had to, but simply because I said Id never had any and Id like to try it some day. Rest in peace ol Squid, fair winds and following seas.
Not great ice cream, but pretty good, which is a great find given the regions lack thereof.Southern California is not particularly well known for its fresh dairy products, and usually Id choose grocery store boxed ice cream, frozen yogurt, or snow over any ice cream shop, but this place is worth stopping at.Parking is an issue, as with nearly every decent eatery in this part of San Diego. May have to walk a bit.
