Was looking for a place to read and enjoy the morning, maybe have a cup of tea. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. Love the smell of the coffee. Glad I stopped by.
Good cheese. Good service. Also roast their own coffee. Roaster is right in the store.
I pretty much buy all of my coffee beans from this place. There are a few other roasters around, but no one matches the quality of The Cheese Shoppe. Great staff as well.
Staff is very helpful and friendly. Best Brie, coffee, and tea in town. Especially the burgundy tea.
Amazing shop to pick up delicious fresh roasted coffee, beans or ground. Their flavored roasts are awesome, as well as their Cheese Shoppe Blend.
Nice selection of cheeses and very friendly selection. I did not get her name, but the woman that helped us was great, we told her what we looking for and she let us sample some things to find the some great new cheeses. It also smells amazing in there.
One of State Colleges hidden treasures. Always a delight to stop by for freshly roasted coffee of many varieties and, if one wishes, conversation around current events. The cheeses are exceptional and the selection bountiful.
Old school cool! Cant say how much this guy/place has meant to me! I visit anytime i am anywhere near State College. A coffee roaster with a huge selection of coffees always. The biggest reason i started roasting my own coffee, and now have my own place. Do yourself a favor and visit if you are near!
A hidden gem in State College. The baristas were approachable and very engaged with the guests (because, yes, I was treated as a guest rather than a customer). Not to mention that the coffee was amazing. I took one sip of my cappuccino and actually said, This is everything I needed in my day, poured into a cup. I will definitely be going back!
Love the smell of roasting coffee? Stop in here! They have a roaster set up in the store, doesnt get any fresher than this. In addition to a large assortment of coffees, they carry a great selection of loose tea and of course delicious cheeses. The staff is friendly and helpful...Try this place, you will not be disappointed.
They have good coffee and coffee beans. It’s so easy and fast and people working there are cool as well. I have never tried cheese there but have heard it’s good. Also, I went here for my first date with my girlfriend. :)
Great location to chill, eat some good food. The service was very welcoming and observant. It has a good atmosphere.
Service was great and friendly. Nice selection of coffee beans, but just not my roast style. Roasted very dark, which results in overly oily beans and hides too much of the natural flavors from the different origins.
Excellent pricing and amazing coffee. Its a must have if you need a coffee fix. They roast their own beans so you know its fresh.
What a fantastic ambience. One of my favorite places. The only thing Im sad about is just discovering it a year ago, while its been there for 42 years!
The best fresh roasted coffee in Happy Valley since 1978! My only quibble is that Im finding the stair down to the shop a bit more challenging as my joints get worse. But *so* worth it!
Fresh roasted coffee from all over the world. I travel 60 miles when I need to replenish. Well worth every bean!
Adorable little shop off the beaten path. Reminded me of the South of France. Excellent selection of affordable coffee. Run by very sociable and knowledgeable staff. I have yet to try anything but their coffee, but I would hazard to say that their the best coffee in State College.
Cheese selection, coffee selection, and tea selection all expansive and impressive for a cozy little place like that. Also shoutout to Zoe for teaching this amateur (me) a thing or two about cheese.
Its a fine place to drink some coffee or buy some cheese. One of the few specialty shops of its kind in the area. The main drawbacks are the lack of seating to enjoy a cup of joe and that in some ways its a bit more expensive than other options, but this is to be expected because it is a specialty business.
The coffee was good, but they need to get rid of the grumpy old guy smoking the pipe.
The best coffee I have ever tasted! The owner is wonderful. It can be intimidating to go in to because of all the regulars, but you will quickly find that they will jump in and help you if the people working are busy.
Love this place!!! I have my morning coffee everyday from here. Its not your typical cookie cutter chain restaurants coffee shop. Great coffee; amazing cheese and awesome people!!
This place is awesome! Highly recommend...Nice people, great muffins, great coffee, and to pay you just put your money on the counter. Cool stuff
Ive been a customer here for almost 30 years. Owner Bill is the best!
Great coffees and cheese. Has a coffee roaster on site providing freshly roasted coffees. Cheese from around the world and gourmet and local items makes this a great place.
I have lived in State College for 8 years and have bought most of my coffee from the Cheese Shoppe. The selection of roasted beans is very good and I am okay with the price (currently $12.50/lb), but my opinion (and that of other people I have spoken with who appreciate good coffee) is that they tend to over roast beans that would be better off less roasted. This may not be a big issue if you are exclusively drinking espresso (or if you smoke cigarettes and have lost some taste sensitivity), but for other brewing methods such as pour over the charred/burned flavor almost entirely eclipses the desirable characteristics--the subtle natural flavors that make coffee from different regions different--I am looking for. Each bean needs to be roasted differently according to a set of specific traits (soil nutriture, amount of rain, how much oil is in the bean, water content or density of the bean, etc.). What I have seen at the Cheese Shoppe consistently over time is a very narrow range of roasts, from medium-dark to very dark (preference of many Europeans), indicating to me a lack of attention to bean traits. Maybe its due simply to personal preference of the roaster at the Cheese Shoppe, but I would really appreciate seeing some light/medium roasts in their lineup. Interpret this review however you want, but I know several people who have stopped buying coffee from the Cheese Shoppe because they share my opinion they over roast.
Love this place, great people, great coffee and the horseradish cheese is fire!
Simply put, you wont find another coffee roaster more dedicated to his craft than Bill Clarke. A State College classic. Ethiopian Harrar is my go to.
Great coffee beans roasted on location. Very friendly staff. Stop in for a cup of coffee in the morning and hang out for a while. Great experience.
Fantastic quality and relatively cheap; if its a choice between starbucks and here, go to the cheese shoppe
Great coffee, really cool and authentic vibe. I make a point to stop in Everytime Im in town.
Great coffee, make your own change for coffee. Great selection of cheese and coffee. Very relaxed and open nice and early! My only complaint is that some roasts seem burnt and occasionally Calder smells of burnt coffee and it is an unpleasant smell and makes me wary of darker roasts.
Great selection of cheeses that theyll let you sample before buying. Fresh roasted coffee is also very good.
So many types of great cheeses, various coffees roasted in front of you, and many loose leaf teas. Cute little tables with fresh flowers out front.
Good people, many coffee and tea blends. Cheeses.
Guaranteed to find rarities here...but dont expect a welcome committee. My first experience: We poured coffee whilst enduring awkward stares. When we went to pay we waited quite awhile. After at least 5min, we eventually threw (dirty) cash onto their clean cheese cutting board and left.Ill be back if I want cheese, otherwise, its not the friendliest coffee joint in town.
Great coffee and cheese. The place always smells amazing.
Best fresh roasted coffee for miles, and a great cheese selection along with other specialty items.
Hands down the best coffee Ive ever tasted.
A great little place to find a good selection of quality coffee and cheeses.
There simply is NO better coffee in State College. Fresh roasted coffee, wide selection of cheeses and other gourmet foods.
Great shop hidden below street level. Delicious espresso beans roasted on site.
Best coffee in town.
Lots of good coffee and other wares. If you buy their coffee mug you can get refills for a dollar.
Coffee the way it should be with over 30 years of knowledge and skill to back it up
Nearly tucked away, the Cheese Shoppe is a hidden jem. Delicious coffee and cheeses.
Knowledgeable staff and tasty coffee with fancy cheeses. I wish they had more medium/light roast coffees, though.
When we entered the shop I immediately noticed that it was fashioned after many old country stores. The interior was made mostly of wood, and there were large barrels and burlap sacks filled with coffee beans throughout the shop. I also noticed the beautiful coffee roaster which was displaying that mornings fragrant batch of coffee beans. In the back of the shop there were more bins filled with various coffee blends and single origin beans. There was also a large variety of cheeses throughout the shop. The shop was pretty interesting. In many ways it felt like I had stepped back in time.Another cool aspect of the shop was that it utilized the honor system. If a customer were just purchasing drip coffee, they could pour it for themselves and place their change on the counter. If they needed to make change, they could just do it for themselves with the massive wads of money laying on the counter. Though I found the shop to be quaint and appealing, it wasn’t really a traditional coffee shop. It was more of a coffee and cheese trading post. There wasn’t really anywhere to sit and enjoy your java, and it was kind of crowded with many tripping hazards. After taking some time to check out the shop I ordered an americano. The staff wasn’t particularly friendly, and didn’t seem to know much about the coffee that they were serving. After I forced some chit chat, the woman behind the counter told me that they used their Cheese Shoppe Blend for espresso drinks. It is a blend of their light and dark beans, which they advertise as having a medium body. When I took the first sip of my americano I was reminded of the way that many coffee drinkers describe Starbucks (which I admit is my favorite NATIONAL coffee chain): Charbucks. This “medium bodied” beverage didn’t taste at all like it was advertised….it tasted like a french roast that had been in the roaster a little too long. It had dark charred and acidic undertones, which I’m sure some people enjoy. But it wasn’t my cup of tea, or coffee if you will.I must admit that I would only half-heartedly recommend W. C. Clarke’s Coffee and Cheese shoppe to friends in the future. Though the shop itself was kind of cool, the venue wasn’t conducive to sitting, the staff wasn’t particularly helpful or friendly and the coffee was just average.
Great selection of on-premise roasted coffee.
Great atmosphere! Great coffee.
Very good coffee, good cheese, but slow service
Excellent house-roasted coffee.
Awesome. Good coffee and great vibe
We make a pilgrimage back to stock up on coffee...this year we drove from Michigan! Worth it!
Always a pleasure to shop here
