I stopped into this shop about a month ago as I was shopping for my sons coin collection. Both gentlemen in the store were very friendly, and their selection was great. The prices were competitive compared to other local shops. They also gave me a small discount, which was unexpected and much appreciated. I will come back again to purchase more coins! Thanks for the great experience.
Been in the coin biz for over 20 years and this is the type of shop we all know and love. Packed with coins and related objects wall to wall. More coin boxes to go through than you have hours, what a wonderful experience. Friendly knowledgeable service. This is not a gold buy place this is a real coin shop that the novice to the serious collector will fall in love with.
Wonderful place interesting coins friendly service.
I spent about two hours browsing the large selection. The owner was very patient and friendly and made conversation as I looked. I found some things I was looking for and I got a great deal. Theres something for everybody here, and at a fair price.
It’s been a while but I have bought and sold here and always felt I received a fair deal. Learned some things that were very helpful from them as well.
Sold some coins to them and got a great deal and they answered all my questions.
Great store, friendly owner, will definitely be back!!
Best coin & stamp shop in town. Ive been a customer for at least 20 years, never had a problem. Friendly, honest, and knowledgeable. I love this place.
Selling gold coins, went to a few shops and he not only gave a higher price than the others, but was the only one to actually closely inspect a coin to see if it might be worth getting the condition certified to get a higher price. Even called another dealer to see if they were interested in buying ones he couldnt. Honest, friendly and fair.
Drove all the way here during normal business hours when their website says theyre open and they are not open.
Best coin shop in Tampa, the owner and staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about coins and currency. They will make a great deal better and leave you smiling and more net in your pocket. Lifetime customer now. Go and see your self
This place is great. Very knowledgeable staff and friendly. Helped me through a mess of coins without any grumbles. I will be sure to always go here.
Okay, so I went in to the Gilder Coin shop the other day after calling and inquiring of their interest in certain items of which I may be willing to sell or have sold to them. These items are a series of very nice and rare stamps which, upon explaining to the gentleman over the phone, he expressed an interest in seeing and instructed me to come on in on the weekend when the stamp guy is there. I do this and basically I get told that what I have is very nice and thats about it. After asking for a tentative offer as the owner was not in that weekend, I was told that my items were worth somewhat in the ballpark of what I expected to realize. However, I was told that there was insufficient money or authorization to spend that amount of money, since the boss was out of town and that I should come on back the following Monday. I did this and was then told by the owner that he was not interested due to the poor market for stamps at this time and the fact, as he states it anyway, that the items I was considering for sale did not have a good market at this time (although I have been following hundreds of auctions online for the same material which have been successfully sold at great prices) and that while it was very nice he would have to pass at this time. He did say that if I would have come in 10 years ago I could have got a very good amount for what I had! 10 years ago! Well, despite my being slightly annoyed to have traveled for no reason after having been led to believe that they had a genuine interest in making me an offer if I came in for the second time, I still thought the man was nice and helpful in his own kind of unhelpful way. This kind of thing just leaves me wondering why Stamp and Coin shops label themselves as such if they are not going to make offers or buy stamps. Who knows. Overall though I give this business a good rating because despite the feeling of being led along, they still were very nice and interested in what I was offering and polite in declining to make an offer.I have a feeling that they didnt make an offer due to the size of investment it would have taken to acquire what I had (around $10k) and the feeling they may have had of how long it would take them to sell it. Who knows? If your selling stamps though I would suggest you find a better place, but if you have coins, they are nice and willing to take the time to work with you. However, as with any of this business, make sure you are well informed because, as I have seen, the world of collectors isnt always filled with honesty and integrity, as some of the other reviews of this business suggest. Also, while you are looking for a place in Tampa for coins, I WOULD suggest A VILLAGE STAMP & COIN. You will get your moneys worth and get a right value.
I helped my aunt sell my uncles coin collection in Ohio and here in Tampa we both wish we had come to Gilder Shop first. This coin store was a great shopping experience. Everyone we spoke with here took the time to explain things and was very helpful. I now know a local coin store I can come to for good advice and reliable helpful answers.
I met with John, the owner, primarily looking for a coin box insert for a Nascar coin and not only did he deliver, but he told me some great stories of car racing from when he lived in the Eldora area. I also had a few coins from my elderly father, which he was kind enough to look at. I have no knowledge of old coin value, but it was clear that he had significant knowledge and could talk about their history, circulation, etc. I would highly recommend John for both his engaging personality and his knowledge of his industry.
The most honest coin dealer I have found. Always helpful and corteous, with great prices! I have been collecting coins and paper money for over 25 years, and this is the one shop that I can trust to give me the best prices.
Says they close at 4pm so why would they be closed at 3:15 on a Friday afternoon. Not very professional at all
I have stopped into the shop each time I have visited Tampa. They have always been very helpful and courteous. A wonderful selection to purchase from.
Never visited their shop but did speak to a very nice gentleman over the phone that was very knowledgeable and helpful, and that was something I couldnt get with all the other coin dealerships I called.
Mr. John Frost is a very knowledgeable and provides great products at the best prices in the Tampa area. I would highly advise anyone looking for coins, silver, or gold coins should stop and allow John to help you out. I wish all businesses where as great as The Gilder Shop....
Felt like I was treated unfairly. They offered me $35 for almost a pound of old silver coinage. Then I asked about silver bars and a gentleman told me he didnt have any and walked away so I felt he didnt want to help me. No worries I just spent a few $1000 online to get what I wanted which he wouldnt sell. Major lack of customer service. These small coin shops are acting like pawn shops. Dont let them RIP you off. Online sales are more competitive
Called to ask about the store... guy wasnt helpful and then said he had to get going. It wasnt a long conversation and I wasnt rude or demanding. With that type of customer service, who would go there? Ill go back to my usual spot, even though it is further away. It was like they didnt want another customer.
Ive been collecting coins for about six months now. The Gilders shop was the first store that I ever went to. When I first started collecting coins I was incredibly naïve about the hobby. I was buying very random coins for very random reason. Ive come to casually know the owner, John Frost, and can say factually from personal experience, that Mr. Frost has always an honest dealer with me. He could have very easily taken advantage of my naivety, I know for a fact that he did not, instead he pointed me in several directions that have helped me understand the hobby better as a whole. What coins are worth, what to look for when evaluating coins. Hes shared with me some very interesting and obscure stories about coins that have helped peak my interest in the field. Looking at the comments above, I can say that theyre just false. You can tell by talking to Mr. Frost, that he truly loves the hobby, and that ultimately his goal is to spread interest about numismatics. Ive been to several coin shops and one coin show recently, but I really do value the relationship that Mr. Frost has taken the time to create with me. I talk to Mr. Frost before I purchase any high value coin, especially graded ones, and I always ask him his opinion first when Im considering selling a coin. I love going into his shop and seeing him talk to his customers, you can tell theyre all people hes known for quite some time and has also developed a relationship with, considering hes owned his shop since the 90s. I would recommend Mr. Frost for any numismatic services you need, whether it be buying or selling coins, starting a new hobby, or if you need information about a coin. Mr. Frist and the Gilders shop are a real Tampa treasure.
I have gone to the Gilder shop for years ... they are a welcoming place ... honest and helpful ... John Miller
Very friendly and helpful. Will come back and shop here again.
You could not ask for better service nice people to deal with.
I have been doing business with the Guilder Shop for over 40 years now and it has always been a pleasure to deal with John Frost. An honest group of guys always willing to help.
Im a young collector, so Ive only been dealing with John Frost and his associates at The Gilder Shop for about six months; nonetheless, its clear to me that he knows how to treat his customers and give them a fair deal. When I first came in, they engaged me about what I was interested in. Without pressuring me to buy or directing me to any particular item, Frost shared some personal experiences and made conversation about my favorite coins. I have subsequently seen him do the same for other patrons. It seems that so long as youre interested in the hobby (whether it be numismatics, philately, or even some exonumia), they are willing to work with you, no matter your level of experience.Further, the prices at The Gilder Shop are rather good. I have literally seen them reference the Greysheet for the price on a coin I bought; the Greysheet represents dealer-to-dealer, wholesale values for coins, not retail prices. I dont mean to imply that every item in the store is guaranteed to be discounted in this way, but its just an illustration of their willingness to offer fair, affordable prices.Gilder has a nice selection, a laid-back atmosphere, and has definitely gained my trust. Theyre knowledgeable, offer good prices, and seem to treat all of their patrons with the same respect. Highly recommended!
Very fair buy price for my silver and gold coins, amazing collection!
No one knows how to pick up a phone apperently
The professionals here were able to tell me the history of the coins I came across and gave me a great deal for them. Definitely looks like a collectors paradise.
