Just had a wonderful experience with quality service from my cashier, Maya. She is a treasure.Helped me unpack my cart, took special care to see that my fresh soup was secure for the ride home, packed my groceries with great care and was courteous and pleasant. Please extend my appreciation to her.Thank you,Jo Foley
I went 10 minutes before it closed. The store already closed down things I needed. When I grabbed a basket, it was sticky and I couldnt find sanitizer to was it off. I wanted a chicken and the guy was kind to give me one he had put in fridge. Back in the day, they used to clean up after they closed.
Been shopping here since 1999 when it was Walbaums...overall good selection and sales, but lines are long at peak times. Building is a former skating rink, so the aisles and lay outs are too narrow and sloping...seafood department is mediocre, not fresh enough IMHO. I wish deli was higher end like Boars Head. Staff are great, long time employees and managers. Kosher department is a plus.
The people that work in the bakery are EXTREMELY unhelpful. They dont even want to make eye contact they avoid it. When you ask a question they act as though your bothering them. I ordered a cake two years ago and they didnt make it or bother to tell me until the pickup day. I made the HUGE mistake of ordering again this year and they did the same! Would NEVER recommend them to anyone!! Terrible cust. Service!
Love this store. The employees are very helpful, the bakery is out of this world 🌎. The choices are top notch. I also love the kosher area. Everything is setup so well. All the food fruits, meats, deli, is very clean. Social distancing, masks are following the rules, everyone that shops there are very pleasant A number one. Theres also and abundance of other stores in the area to shop from if need be.
Friendly store with great selections. Lots of good fruit and ready-made dinners
John the night manager is amazing. Alway helped my dad to his car when he was barley able to walk. All the employees from Meats, Deli, Bakery to Grocery, really keeps that place in excellent shape. Barbara in customer service treats everyones as a friend just go there and youl see it. Love that store !
Yeah they Have your Run off the Mill American Funfair Foods and so they should :) also stock a nice arrangement of Kosher Foods and Kosher Deli to boot. My Favourite is the ice cold Beer selection. I also love there BIG bags of ice Comes in very handy for Summer Gatherings.Bye Bye Covid Hello 2021
There is a great selection of vegetables and fruits, well lit displays and constant replenishing of stock all day. They have the freshest fish of any supermarket and many choices of ethnic foods, including Kosher meats. Competitive prices and always enough check out lines open.
The bagels that I bought that are certified kosher was excellent wasnt dry, flavorful and the kosher meat and deli section was good and fresh. I never seen a kosher experience like this in Connecticut in a long time.I cannot wait for my next trip. My favorite Big Y location.
Nice but. Expensive! I will shop around.
Staff here is wonderful prices are great I would wait for weekdays they have the best deals fresh fruit and great prices wonderful I visit this place at least twice a month
Really really nice produce!! Watch out for sales. Be careful what you buy here. Some things are over priced!
Okay so today I went to big Y (and let me just say, every time I come to big y it slaps.. it’s truly my home).. okay but TODAY I went to Big Y with my sister and OH MY LORD we had the NICEST cashier.. (all of the cashiers are amazing) but his name was Ethan and he was so sweet.. so Ethan if you see this.. you’re a real one (btw we were the girls buying powdered sugar and my sister was being stupid)
Continue to shop here because of close to my Moms house....I went with specific items in mind..3 of those items were not available..not great % seeing I had 9 things on my list. For the time I have shopped here it has been continuously a HIT or a Big fat MISS.
I like Big Y because my sister like their chicken salads my family likes their meatloaf if Big Y at Crossroads Plaza doesnt have meatloaf available I always go to the Big Y on Route 44 in Walmart plaza on West Main Street in Avon,CT if the Crossroads Plaza West Hartford,CT doesnt have meatloaf available. Big Y has self checkouts at all their stores I remember when Big Y said they opened a another store in the town of Simsbury,CT formerly Wagner Ford and Wagner Nissan Wagner auto group of Simsbury,CT on Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury,CT they opened a Big Y in Marlborough,CT on Route 66 Big Y in Old Saybrook,CT Big Y in Derby,CT Big Y in Milford,CT and Big Y in Meriden,CT. I heard there is a Big Y coming to Clinton,CT too. I have been to other Big Y stores like besides West Hartford and Avon I been to Ellington East Windsor Enfield Manchester Rocky Hill Plainville Torrington and Tolland.
Very Friendly staff and plenty of things under one roof, so highly recommend this place !
It could be better!Produce sometimes is incomplete..it could have more kinds of greens and roots...
I love the meat selections and if u find markdowns u get the best deals
THIS STORE CHAIN IS BASICALLY AN EXPENSIVE GROCERY STORE EXPERIENCE! IF MONEY IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR YOU, THEN YOU WONT MINE SHOPPING AT THIS GROCERY STORE CHAIN...
Didnt care for the hump in the floor. Have to climb it, I walk with a cane and it kinda sucked.
Last night in East Windsor I was There ordering a pizza, (Halloween). The dept. was incredibly busy. The employee waiting on me Susan, was very pleasant while it was obvious she was overwhelmed with orders. As busy as she was Susan got me my pizza and still managed to give me a big smile with her eyes (mask)and a thank you as I left! I will be coming here for my pizza from now on and highly recommend this experience to everyone else. So good to see an employee treating people so nice. Expecically during troubled times. Thanks again
Often understaffed but they try so hard.
Always clean and friendly service
We enjoy everything at Big Y! The staff and varieties of food and products is amazing! Thanks!
Was great. Employees very helpful
I love Big Y they always have fresh & local produce, and other stuff!! And unlike the Stop and Shop that is a 5 minute walk from my house, the small one on Newington Road in the plaza with Crazy Crazy Bruces liquor store and Dollar Tree they were never great but at least I could shop there and take the cons with the pro, like a block away drive but now theyre worse than ever especially since cold did they never have anything in stock there they have the eye of blocked off like youre going through a freaking corn maze so I prefer to drive to the other side of West Hartford to go to Big Y where they dont run out of stuff and you can go up and down the aisles normally and cash out normally and they dont have ghetto workers there that are very rude!!
Pretty good Big Y but it is a little on the smaller side. Not a problem but there are some curious decisions about what food is stocked with the limited space. Why 2 kinds of oyster sauce but no fish sauce?
Absolutely love this place, this is definitely my go to spot. When I dont feel up to driving to Wal-Mart
Most discourteous staff I have ever encountered across multiple visits. I highly recommend you shop at one of the many other supermarkets. Never leave the Big Y with any other feeling than total disgust.
Worst experience ever! Went there for a simple propane exchange. First of all Im a first responder, working extended hours during this COVID19 pandemic. As a courtesy to first responders stores like Trader Joes, Stop & Shop etc. would let you enter without waiting in long line and if I told them I just needed a quick propane exchange and I wasnt doing any grocery shopping Im sure some accommodations would have been made. It wasnt the case with Big Y on Bishops Corner in West Hartford. So I waited in line just like everyone else and upon entering the store I approached the girl at the customer service desk who had zero customers waiting in line, zero! She was too busy talking to another employee so when I finally decided to interrupt her and inquired about propane exchange she sent me to one of the registers with 10+ people waiting in each line with shopping carts full of groceries. She could have easily done it right there at the CS desk. So I waited in line again... Soon I realized that I will be late to my 12-hr shift so I asked the lady at the Self Checkout isle if I could purchase propane there. She replied with a surprised look on her face Why didnt you go to the customer service desk? I told her that I was sent away from the CS desk at which point she and the girl at CS desk exchanged some words and dirty looks. After listening to their back and forth non-sense I couldnt hide my frustration any longer so I told her This is your store, all I need is propane exchange. Please figure it out! As I was paying for propane at the CS desk the girl kept trash talking which was very unprofessional. At least the gentleman who came outside to exchange my propane tank was very nice and professional. I cant say the same about the other Big Y employees whom I dealt with today, including the kid at the entrance who was on his cell phone the entire time. I shop at that store all the time because of the convenient location close to home, but after this experience I dont see myself coming back. I wonder when was the last time they took ethics class. Store management should seriously look into that.
Its almost embarrassing to admit how much I love this Big Y. First off, I live directly across the street and walk over almost daily for my groceries, so that definitely adds to my shopping pleasure. Location aside, the Bishops Corner Big Y is an older and smaller store, however it is very clean (Ive never seen a spill) and typically very well stocked (especially during CoVid year). Due to the size there can be limitations on some speciality items, but the store still carries a broad selection of food products, prices are reasonable for a traditional mid-tier supermarket, and the sales a good. Shout outs: pharmacy/self-care aisles which are generally cheaper than CVS and Walgreens; LOTS of local products and produce; produce quality is typically fresh; a bakery that friends and family do not believe is not a specialty bakery or in a supermarket; and the staff is super friendly and helpful.
Wonderful and nice fresh food!
I always received five star service and products at any Big Y store. This time service was not as always even at register. But product quality still A1
Nice market usually clean, but I feel their prices on non sale items are higher than other grocery stores.
Unfortunate not all are respecting the guidelines of face coverings and social distancing. These stores are liable for making sure people in their establishment are doing just that. As well as what is the reason for having one way aisles if people may do what they please. There is no medical exceptions to wearing face coverings. Those cards have been debunked months ago. If someones health is that bad they cannot wear a face covering how is it a good decision to be on public were people cannot take proper precautions to look out for others w/different immune systems. Everyone has some kind of excuse for making bad decisions for people they dont even know
Nice clean store everyone is wearing masks and social distancing good selection of produce. Great meat selection very helpful butcher.
They offer a lot of choices. The prices are high.
I have to say for a special big y to meet certain needs I am very impressed with how this store carries itself
Debora was wonderful shes not even a cashier - but you did a fantastic job! she was so courtious so polite
Great bakery fully stocked shelves plenty of parking
Best fresh sushi market highly expensive though
They work very hard to see that customers are satisfied and safe.
Clean convenient shopping
Absolutely horrible shopping experience. I recently moved here from Seattle and I am accustomed to courteous, and friendly service and I did not receive that. Also I understand that plastic bags are banned here but to offer me nothing and just fill my cart with my items and offer no assistance left me speechless. Being a disabled person I already deal with bad people but I draw the line when my money is involved. The store manager should be ashamed. I wont be spending anymore of my money at this store.
Quick and convenient
If youre wondering, the Y in Big Y is short for Y would anyone ever shop here?Ive lived in all over New England and the Mid-Atlantic and I have yet to find a grocery store as poorly managed as Big Y. Everything that could be wrong with a grocery store is wrong at Big Y. The food (if they havent run out of it and failed to restock it) is not only not fresh, but frequently moldy or rotten, especially the produce. The prices of many items are often either missing or incorrect. Sometimes, things have been put in the wrong area completely, so you have to figure out which price tag goes to which product so you dont get surprised at the checkout. But thats ok, because youll have plenty of time to examine your items during your wait in the long lines, since Big Y appears to be chronically understaffed and the cashiers, while friendly, appear to have more interest in talking to each other across the lanes than say, bagging your groceries. Luckily, you will be able to occupy yourself during your wait by dodging other carts, because the aforementioned long lines spill into a high traffic area.Like I said, Ive been in a lot of stores all over the Northeast. Youd be hard pressed to find one as bad as Big Y. I have yet to find one this bad in West Hartford, the state of Connecticut, or indeed, the entire Northeast region. I am giving it two stars because they have a good location, which is, I am pretty sure, the only reason they are able to make any money whatsoever given that they run their store like a circus. If you have any other grocery store that is convenient to you, I highly suggest you go there.
Friendly staff, great place to pick up lunch. From pizza to sushi. Super clean store.
I really like it. It shows the difference between a national chain and a regional family run outfit. You cant satisfy all of then people all of the time. West Hartford is a tough crowd and I think management and staff handle it well.Ive always found good quality fresh foods, breads, meats, etc .......I think for the upscale cost of the town the prices are good. Its always clean and stocked
Every since shoprite closed i come here great prices quality products and a wide variety of food, love the ribs and mac n cheese as a customer service manager of 6yrs / bookkeeper shopping here is always a great experience to see how other companies run there stores and interact with customers great job big y
Great experience
Outstanding selection of everything, but especially Kosher food
Wonderful store. Great produce. Nice people.
Great selection and service.
Friendly and clean, but prices are not very competitive. Most likely a product of being in a more expensive part of town.
Theyve always had good prices on things I needed. Also, machines for redeeming cans/bottles. And one of these days, I want to try their ready-made pizza!
Clean and well stocked.
I have only been in the store twice its down the road from where I work. I decided to stop in quick for the second time tonight, a Friday night at 5 oclock wanted to grab something for dinner. There was nobody in Bakery. There was nobody in Deli to help me. The gentleman behind the seafood counter was 6 people deep with no one to help him. The staff I did encounter were selling and unhelpful. I will never stop in the store again.
All staff members are friendly and so helpful.
Just recently went back to Big Y as a grocery store and if you immediately get a rewards card you are safe. Otherwise you are bombarded with every sale price you are NOT a part of...truly peer pressured me into going to customer service and getting my silver card. basic variety, not much specialty stuff. Clean and organized.
Love the Big Y, all the employees are so helpful. The store is always clean with a really fresh produce section and great butcher shop and bakery. Never a long line at the deli or to checkout and excellent weekly specials.
Great shopping place. Fresh, vegetables, people are pleasant and helpful, nice fresh meat. Love shopping there
This is specific to the Big Y in Bishops Corner in W Htfd. Its a smaller Big Y with a more limited variety to choose from compared to the other Big Ys in the area. Its not meant to be a criticism more of an observation. The grocery store is generally clean and is crowded during peak shopping times (after work). Its a convenient stop to make if u need to pick up a few things... I enjoy going there and will def continue to do my shopping at Big Y
Thank you big y for shopping experience today. Be safe
My horrible experience with Barbara over the phone and then in person at customer service is what led me to write a review today. She was beyond rude over the phone and hung up even before the conversation was done and then was very rude in the store. I had to hold myself back from giving this women a lesson in customer service on the spot. Instead I left the store angry. No grocery store should ever leave you feeling angry. The only gem at Big Y, is the Kosher Deli. The nicest employees can be found there with quality food and conversation. The Kosher Deli is the only reason I didnt give Big Y one star.
I bring my father shopping at Big Y once or twice a week. The store is easy to navigate, clean, well little, has a Kosher foods section and the cashiers, baggers and managers know my dad by name. They always take time to talk and joke around with him. Speaking of Management, I always purchase a certain brand and two flavors of granola. I noticed they were running very low, luckily a manager was standing nearby. I told him how much I loved this product and asked if he could order more of my two favorites. The next week, the entire shelf was filled with my two faves as well as the others. That is one of the best examples of customer service Ive ever had in a supermarket. Go to Big Y in West Hartfords Bishops Corner. You will be quite pleased just as I am. They definitely go above and beyond for their customers.
This is a well run store - It has a good selection of fresh produce and meats. I am pleased with the staff who are very friendly and accommodating. They have been increasing their selection of organic and less processed foods to such an extent I no longer feel compelled to go to Whole Foods for produce. Reasonable selection of fresh whole grain breads from their bakeryThey also do a nice job of gamefication with silver and gold coins specials. If you shop there on a regular basis and do not have a silver shoppers card you are wasting money. I save an average of 15% ( 8- 22% per trip) by going for specials with the coins.
Great place. Can stop for lunch and do my shopping. Great card offers too
Good place to pick up hot/cold lunch.
The layout is a little different than typical grocery stores but, the floor is what you have to be careful about. There are a few places where there is an incline/decline and if youre not paying attention you could trip yourself hitting the incline. They should mark those places better to avoid that.
I was very disappointed in the pizza my daughter ordered it was a half cheese and half veggie pizza. We’ve been ordering veggie pizzas for almost 10 years here and they were always great containing fresh broccoli, mushrooms, olives, onions, and peppers. We were overall sad on how bad it was. There were no mushrooms or broccoli. The peppers, both red and green, were marinated NOT fresh causing the pizza to be soggy and sour.
Nice, clean store. Big Y carries a large variety of fruits, vegetables and bakes goods. Prepared foods available, pizza, sandwiches and chicken among the many items available. They also have a Sushi bar and soup available.
Always a hit or miss. Sometimes the clerks are accommodating and courteous and other times they are rude. 8.00 extra to divide dozen roses into bundle of 2? Not good, especially when Whole Foods had them for a lot less!
Produce is fresh, meats very good, store slightly smaller, so grocery selections sometimes limited to only a couple of top brand names. One corner of store all Kosher. Clean, nice, small-ish.
Every time I go to the customer service counter to seek help, lady behind the counter younger girl with glasses super unprofessional. I come for western union and every time I come in there there debit card machine is not working and it seems like they just don’t care about it. Which business like this doesn’t have debit machine not operating. Management just doesn’t care and they have unprofessional working behind the counter. I am sure this big y family needs to know how there staff is running there show.
Great place, nice people. Can usually find sale items, sometimes out of stock but always can get a raincheck. My favorite is the night staff. They are all great on the front end.
Very clean and orderly grocery store easy on the eyes hardly any waiting super help at self-checkout thanks guys and girls, money orders, lottery tickets .
Clean. Wonderful quality veggies, cheeses, meats. Even those this grocery store is the farthest one in town, it is worth the extra time in the car! I found that the veggies and fruit stay fresher for longer in my fridge than when I buy them at the other local major supermarket...
Big Y does a good job with plentiful supplies. A clean and tidy shop always helps, too.
Excellent place smaller store but a very good deli selection for very good quick dinners try the meatloaf fish and fries its all good
Let me start with the pizza section; Even though the hours for the fresh pizza say 11-8 pm, don’t expect to be there at 11 and get fresh pizza. I have been going at 11 for the past couple years a few times a week and left disappointed every time, if it wasn’t for the gold coins I may have given up. Today was my last straw when I got there and Erin and Xavier were behind the counter PREPPING the pizza at 11:10. I watched both of them tell numerous people itd be ready ‘in 5 mins’ three times, even though it finally came out by 1140, and it was only cheese, saying the others would be a little longer. When you get there for 11 because you need to be somewhere at 1130 it is hugely disappointing when nothing is ready and the workers are lazy and rude. They should either change the hours for the public, or tell Erin and Xavier the hours are 1030-8 so that the pizza may actually be ready by 11 when people expect it. Also if you want to be noticed you’ll have to yell at the numerous people that are working behind the counter that refuse to look up.I’ve been going to this big y since 2008, and the employees who work at the prepared foods sections are continuously rude it surprises me, I wonder whose hiring these people. Aside from the rudeness, I’ve consistently noticed (esp with the pizza and bakery sections) that I have to flag someone down to order if I don’t want to stand there for an hour waiting for someone to realize I’m standing there.Food quality is good, people who complain about price need to realize they’re in West Hartford.
Oddly dark and cramped. But they have a good selection. Prices seem a little steep, might be going back to whole foods as their prices just came down with the amazon buyout.
My family had great service from their kosher meats department today. Very nice, helpful and friendly.
Big y for why am I shopping here. Wal-Mart food for whole food prices. Workers are not particularly friendly. They have a weird rewards program that you have to buy in, and the discount brings the price down to normal levels.
Always, helpful very knowledgeable people at the deli counter and fish counter John is one of the best managers there is always greets his customers with a smile always helps my elderly father to the car when he goes there. An awsome place to shop.....Gregg P
I shop and assist elderly people on fixed incomes. My clients shop when their caregivers are available. At check out my client had his Big Y card but was denied discounts because he didnt have a smartphone to download the App. nor could he afford one. I called for the manager, explained the situation and asked if their was someway she could help my client out. She said Big Y is appealing to the Teckkies and refused to give my elderly client the discount. She told me to come back on senior discount day. This made me sad for my client and i felt it was discrimination against the elderly. I told her so as well. Needless to say i will no longer shop here with my elderly clients and i refuse to shop their anymore myself.
Very nice, the helper was very good.
Good quality fresh foods and a consistently positive customer experience. Not the lowest prices but worth the step up you pay for and much better value compared with whole foods. I shop here regularly.
Everyone is knowledgable and friendly. Variety is amazing.
My experience at big y is very friendly and pleasant the staff is very helpful i enjoy shopping there i gave 5 star
Good place to stop and grab lunch, great hot and cold choices, pizza, fried chicken, sushi made right there, all kinds of hot and cold food and the people are so great always very courteous and helpful!
Store is quite pricy. There aren’t whoLe lot of options available but you can get most of the day to day stuff. Some of the cashiers are very rude. I live walking distance from this store, literally. Most of the cashiers are so rude and now we prefer to avoid Big Y for our major groceries run. I would rather stop by Shell or Mobil for last minute stuff. I really wish management could do something about this.
First time thereFabulous and friendly staffWide variety of itemsWill definitely go back
Clean. Various assortments of groceries. Nice, polite staff.
I wish the store layout made it a bit easier to navigate, but overall a great experience and good prices.
Reminiscing about how good the pork chops were from here. We have lived in 3 states since and have found nothing to compare!
Big Y Store manager, Jim, discriminates customers based on their name and the the color of their skin. Won’t go back
I would like to say that Andrew in the meat department is the nicest young man who always takes care of us, so helpful, courteous, an bends over backwards to satisfy you,, we live on the other side of town but travel over there just for the meats an that special care Andrew he gives the people Rick
Nice store, however, I have asked three times if they stock or could stock a specific frozen pizza. Can’t get a straight answer...
