The best malts in town. I try to get them every summer and not once have I been disappointed. Waits can be a little long especially with large groups but it is well worth the wait.
Friendly staff, masked, helpful. Loved the area around the shoppe. Simple and didnt have to wait long for my raspberry shake. A bit pricey but worth it.
Great ice cream but only about 10 choices. Only had a cone. The malts were very popular and looked great. Just passing thru and would definitely go back.
This was recommended by my host during a business trip. If you are into chocolate, the double chocolate is a must. I had a single scoop, which is actually a quite generous portion. Be prepared to stay in line for a while. This is a very popular spot among the locals.
October 17th is the last day they are serving for the season but other then that it was quick and delicious. Beautiful veiw as well.
We never miss visiting The Portland Malt Shoppe when we make a trip up to Duluth. The ice cream is delicious. The staff are friendly. And the views are amazing. What a fun way to end your walk on the boardwalk! Just head up the blue stairs and youll find the best ice cream in town!!!
Very slow service, I waited for 30 minutes watched the line next to me go fast. When it was finally our turn we got served a thick malt why Give a straw!? the lady forgot my wafer. Tourist trap and waste of time and money.
Nice place to stop and have an ice cream while you walk around the lake front path. Dark chocolate and vanilla ice cream was delicious. Perfect for the hot weather.
Cute little place to grab a malt or ice cream! Great view of the water. Downside is no parking.
I would love to give a positive review, but as we were standing outside deciding what to get, we were informed that they were “now closed”. The young man informed us that everything had already been cleaned at 8:01, when they closed at 8:00 and we just watched another couple walk away with their malts. Such a shame when businesses are supposedly struggling to stay open and we were turned away.
You’ve got to love the PortLand Malt Shoppe! It’s a Duluth hot-spot! They offer hard ice cream and delicious malts and shakes. Although they aren’t inexpensive, they are absolutely heavenly! The kids working there are efficient and do their best to get you your treats as fast as possible. There’s a tiny parking lot and plenty of parking on the street nearby. Don’t forget to bring cash - no checks or credit cards accepted.
The best place in Duluth to grab a malt or ice cream! An absolute stop if youre from out of town. My family and I go here all the time. Its definitely a staple of ours.
Oh my goodness was this ever good! They offer a wide range of ice cream and malt options. Hubby and I both got a malt and it was huge! Very reasonable price for the size. Must stop for a dessert in Duluth.
Locared next door to Fitgers Inn.Great stop for a walk up ice cream treat, well prepared and tasty... to enjoy before or after a leisure walk on the Lakewalk trail going to and from Canal Park, Duluth
In college this was a go to date spot. Its still great. The views cant be beat at an ice cream place!
Amazing raspberry rumble malt! You can never go wrong at the Malt Shoppe. We missed last year, the first time in many years. Its worth the 2 hour drive! Ill be back.
Best old fashioned malts in town! Its a seasonal malt shop that also sells ice cream cones sundaes. Line can get long, but definitely worth the wait!
We love ice cream shops. Had our favorite flavors. Lake views with access deck and stairs to the lakeshore paths and beach.
This place is pretty sweet. Literally. I think Im going into a diabetic coma.
Good malts and shakes in a nice part of town with a beautiful view of lake superior!
My favorite malt shop on the planet! Every time we are in Duluth this is scheduled as a destination. They do 1 thing and they do it great! Staff has always been happy and cheerful and the limit to your malt flavor is you! Make this part of your duluth experience!
Delicious thick Malts. Many custom flavor combinations. Drove by a hundred times and always wanted to drop by. Finally got the chance to walk up and was happy I did.
A must-stop when in Duluth.Banana, chocolate, peanut butter milkshake for this gal!Love the lake view and and friendly service!
Been waiting for the pandemic to be done so I could tolerate standing in a line with people. The chocolate malt was worth it. And sitting at the picnic table here you can look at the big lake. Just a sublime experience.
The raspberry truffle malt I had was amazing good! So was my kids dark chocolate icecream cone, I tasted it. Cute building with a walkup window in front right off Lake Superior. This is a must visit if youre by the lake in Duluth!
A staple to Duluth. When visiting this has become a tradition to get a shake or ice cream cone here... Love this place
Pretty good but out of most of their flavors
Super cute malt shop right off the Northshore walking path
Got a float there today, the rootbeer was warm which melted the one scoop of ice cream. Was disappointed 😞.
Way too sweet and overpriced. The taste itself is fine but too much sugar spoils it
You get great ice cream along with a wonderful view of Lake superior.
Wonderful ice cream, it just gets very busy and the wait is LONG!
Nice little ice cream shop, thanks for the tip vista fleet!
Many childhood memories of this place...it never disappoints. We try to stop here every time were in the area.
Good ice cream, quick lines. Right on the lake shore trail.
I got the cone with strawberry cheesecake ice cream and it was great. Friendly and helpful staff.
Amazing malts! A must stop for us everytime we visit Duluth.
I understand Covid rules with masks and all, but they are an outdoor retailer, so I didnt have a mask on me as I was walking the Lakewalk. I put my shirt over my nose and face and walked up to the counter and was asked do you have a mask? I replied no and told the girl that I am totally vaccinated and she replied:we cant serve you without a mask. So I left. I returned after my walk and waited in line for 30 minutes. I asked if they had bottled water because they do sell bottled soda, my answer was no we have cups for 25 cents. I ordered 3 malts and asked for a carrying case and guess what? They dont have those either. All in all very disappointed 😞
For someone to ask me if I’m vaccinated is HIGHLY illegal.... And on top of that have to wear a fricken mask OUTSIDE when I’m not standing anywhere near you?! The family standing in front of me wasn’t wearing masks and weren’t vaccinated but yet able to order?!?! No thanks, I’ll take my service somewhere else where I won’t be asked personal health questions.
Fun place! If you like ice cream this is a must place to stop. Great selection of flavors to choose from. I had the Cookie Dough in a Waffle Cone which was a triple scoop cone for $5.25. There was 4-5 kids inside running the place. I would like to stop there again on a return visit. Great views of Lake Superior.
Awesome malts, very nice staff10 out of 10!!
Great ice cream flavors, root beer floats, and the banana chocolate malt is to die for, made with a real banana too 😋
Ice cream was absolutely fantastic- I got the Raspberry Truffle which is good if you like raspberry ice cream with chocolate chips in it. The other flavor I tried was the pecan praline which was sweeter (though no overly sweet)! Waffle cone was well worth the 50c extra! I would def come here again next time I visit Duluth.
Great shakes. Never too cold for ice cream!
Very crowded and long lines not worth the wait. Malt was very sweet you cant have more than couple bites.
Our favorite malt shop in Duluth. Try to stop every time we are in town.
They have the best chocolate ice cream and fudge Ive ever tried! Every time I came to Duluth, I have to come here
Great ice cream but the lines are too long
Excellent! A nice icecream treat for dad and my 6 year old! Happy with their mask policy as well! Good call on their part! Also considering everyone around was tourists and everyone had masks... even more cool! Out of all the places I could had gone Im even more happy now than we decided on Duluth! Thank you!
Bring a mask. This shop requires them to order. Will try again and update with an actual review sometime!
Awesome place to stop while your on a walk!
We don’t leave Duluth without a stop at Portland Malt Shoppe. My fav has always been the chocolate malt!
As a worker myself, I understand the rule of “no mask no service” but if you have that rule, make sure you apply it to everyone. We were right behind a couple who ordered and got their malts with no masks, but when we went up to order they said they couldn’t serve us and showed us the no mask, no service sign. Like I said before, I understand. We walked away and went to get our masks, but at lease show some respect and not be unfair with the rule. Thank you.
Best ice cream in Duluth very generous portions
The Malt Shoppe brings summer to Duluth before Mother Nature does. It is always a special place to visit!
Perfect. We waited about 15 minutes in line and our Malta were very good. Views behind the shoppe are beautiful and it gave me and my daughter a spot to explore while my husband waited in line. Malts were worth every penny and that little vanilla wafer cookie was the perfect little surprise! Thanks for a good experience! We will come again for sure.
My husband and I stop here every time we come to Duluth in the spring/summer. Brought my parents here this Labor Day weekend since it’s a unique Duluth experience. Both lines stretched all the way back past the sidewalk which is normal for this time of year but it took us over an hour to get to the window. 3-4 late teen/early 20’s working and taking their time, playing around between customers. Huge bummer and not the service or experience we’re used to.
A couple of friends and I had a craving for ice cream. We heard about the Portland Malt Shop so we thought it would be a good idea to try them out. Their shakes are awesome! Id go back when in the area again.
Ryan christensen makes awesome malts.
Other than the fact that it took 45 minutes in line to be served, I had the expectation that this ice cream would be phenomenal. Contrary. The malt was tasteless, the Ice cream especially the praline pecan appeared to be refrozen as it was crystallized, and theCake cones were stale. I could’ve rather use the 45 minutes going to a convenience store and buying ice cream. Extremely disappointing
So many flavors. I wish I could try them all. We got Banana Chocolate and Blueberry Almond Cocount malts. They were delicious. I was very hesitant on which flavor I would get because there were so many pairs you could make that sounded so good. Service was friendly and fast. Check this place out!
I’m sure they’re delicious, but unless you have an hour to wait, I wouldn’t recommend. I was the 6th person in my line and didn’t move in 30 minutes (except when 2 groups ahead of me left due to the wait). I ended up waiting about 45 minutes in total and wasn’t much closer to the front, so I gave up and left without a malt!
Amazing Malts and Sundaes on a beautiful Sunday afternoon!
Best Malt in Minnesota. Great flavors and hand crafted for you. Its worth the wait. Great outdoor area with views of the Lake Superior out the back.
They really do have the best malts. However, it sucks when you plan a trip specifically to get their malts before they close for the season. I checked multiple times a day to make sure they wouldn’t close earlier than they said. Finally get all the way up here and they post that they are closed. Disappointing. I can only assume that they all got the virus because why else would a business do that?
My malt wasnt mixed thoroughly and I had bits of crunchy malt mix to chew. I mean, it was good, but I shouldnt have to crunch a malt. Plus the prices are NUTS! $28 for 3 malts and a small sundae. Theres a reason why we only go once a summer.
This place is really amazing! The ice creams are so delicious. I just wish they were open all round the year!
Good malts near boardwalk.
Great spot for ice cream in Duluth!
I wanted to get an ice cream cone after walking the boardwalk. However, I was discriminated against bc I didn’t have a mask. I have a medical condition which doesn’t allow me to wear a mask. They wouldn’t even look at me! Now I know how many black people feel. I am from out of town where masks are not required. Only recommended. There is no law that requires Minnesotans to wear masks. Unfortunately, I cannot support that business.
