Tried to shop online and found out their website is only accessible thru facebook which i refuse to use. i do not trust most social media so i guess i cannot shop here. too bad because i really would like to purchase a guitar.
Ive been taking piano lessons from Julia for about three years now and I have to say its been one of the best decisions that Ive ever made. I always feel like Im being taught professionally when I come in to practice. Not only have they been a constant source of joy in my life, but they have also given me a so much advice on playing, equipment, and much more. I definitely would recommend them for anyone who is serious about learning how to play an instrument.
My son has taken weekly voice lessons from Julia at Klaverenga for a year. He says shes amazing, shes taught me everything... and she has. My son has developed a critical ear for music that is already helping him with orchestra and we plan to continue with voice lessons next year as well. I love the way she interacts with him. There is an art to instructing kids, and she has it - to be able to meet them where they are, to get them to approach music like professionals, and to keep and grow that love for music.
After many years away from formal musical instruction, I decided to try piano lessons again. I am a fairly experienced, intermediate-to-advanced level piano player, and was looking for some way to both reacquaint myself and to find new challenges. Lessons here have introduced me to new ranges of repertoire, better methods for counting difficult rhythms, and to particulars of performance technique. I also feel much more confident in my ability to learn pieces quickly. In addition to her great instruction, Julia has been very generous with providing knowledge and access to the professional music scene.
Ive visited music stores all over Indiana and this was one of the nicest I had been to. The store owners were very knowledgeable and friendly, and they were able to find the best time for me for my music lesson, even with my weird schedule.I saw another person in the area, but they couldnt read music very well and couldnt teach me past the beginning level. Julia has around 40 years of experience! She is definitely the most qualified and can teach multiple styles too!
I have been taking piano and voice lessons from Julia Klaverenga for about 4 years and couldnt ask for a better instructor. I have not only improved my skills in piano and voice since starting lessons with her, but Ive also had a significant increase in confidence. She has helped me realize my own potential and has guided me to achieve things I never thought I could accomplish. I have had the opportunity to sing with the accompaniment of Jim Klaverenga as well and he is very laid-back and fun to work with. Both her and Jim have valuable lessons and skills to offer, and I have a blast learning from them.
Ive been a customer on and off for years. My son took lessons there and Ive bought several instruments from them (Im actually on my way to get another one this evening). Their prices are fair and they really understand the products they sell. Every town should have a music store like this one.Follow up: I bought a nifty Luna solid body electric with laser engravings and some Elixir strings. The prices were reasonable, there was no sales pressure and I had a nice chat with the owners - a good experience. An update from last week (December 2018): I bought a La Patrie Etude classical guitar from Klaverenga and am quite pleased with it. Its well-made, sounds good and has a nice radius on the fretboard - good since Im new to playing a classical guitar. It came with a nice gig bag as well.Jim had to order it and it came in quickly. His price was cheaper than Amazon and he checked it out to make sure everything was OK before calling me to pick it up. Thats a tough deal to beat and I remain a happy customer.
I have been taking guitar lessons at the Klaverenga Guitar and Piano store for five years, making great progress. The teachers at every level have been expert and very encouraging. All of the staff people are helpful and courteous at all times. My best guitar is acoustic. I bought it at Klaverenga a few years ago, and it is the best that I have. If you want to buy sheet music, music books, guitars, accessories, or if you want to take lessons at beginner, advanced, or expert levels, this is the best.
My husband signed up for voice lessons in an effort to gain some control over his voice. He had no experience and struggles with rhythm. The instructor was very critical and degraded him during lessons. She basically went off on him. The following week she was cold. He then received a call from the studio who cancelled his lessons. Rude and arrogant.
In the short time (less than a year) I have been taking lessons with Julia, I feel as though my singing confidence and ability have improved significantly. Although I only sing as a hobby, I do not feel as though she takes me less seriously because of this or pushes me less just because I am not a professional vocal student. I had zero singing experience prior to starting lessons with her (but a background in music, mainly piano and percussion) so she has been helpful and patient with teaching me the basics while also challenging me. Ive had a lot of fun practicing different vocal techniques and styles, and have learned so much since starting lessons here!
I have been taking jazz voice lessons from Julia now for several months, and it has been a blast. Julia brings a wealth of experience both as a performer and a teacher, a combination that can be hard to find. My six-year-old also started taking voice lessons from Julia, and has shown a lot of improvement in the short time since she started. Overall, we are very pleased!
Im somewhat of a music store tourist. Ive been to guitar stores all across the country and never have I ever been through one that maintains inventory with such meticulous care as Klaverenga. All instruments are thoroughly inspected and free of even the slightest finger print. This is a place you can purchase a quality intrument and not have to worry about it being beat up and abused by your typical guitar shop loiterers. The owners are also incredibly personable and knowledgeable. Wonderful people. Id shop here again and again.
Support your local music store :-) these guys are great, Jim was incredibly knowledgeable, honest and helpful… He tells it like it is in a way the laymen can understand… And high-quality instruments as well 👍🏻👍🏻
Fantastic store, loved the selection and the lady there was very nice. I was just passing through west Lafayette and happened to have ukuleles on my mind. The lady really knows her stuff and was helpful in deciding which one to buy. 100/100 would go back.
Great store! Was very impressed by the quality and selection of guitars. They were all in good condition and didnt have blemishes. The owners were very helpful and I found everything I needed without having to drive to Indianapolis.
I just became aware of these Google reviews and wanted to add my experience.I have been studying classical guitar for a bit over 10 years with Jim Klaverenga. Having started lessons in my late 50s I am no doubt a slower learner than someone younger but I have never left a lesson not wanting to come back and learn more. To me this is a clear indicator of a productive and supportive learning environment.I have purchased two guitars from him over the last 10 years. In both cases, I appreciated being able to try the instruments to my satisfaction, knowing they had been carefully handled. At least one complaint in some of the other reviews was about the request that a customer not handle the guitar without assistance. This small limitation allowed me to make a selection knowing the instrument was in mint condition. I also appreciated Jims experienced guidance in making a selection.Lastly, there were some complaints about payment policies for lessons. All I can suggest to those unhappy about the policy is to consider that the time has been reserved for you. To manage many students with multiple teachers and to make it an economically viable requires predictable income. These conditions are stated verbally and in writing when you begin lessons.People read reviews like these to get an idea about the goods and services they are considering buying. My experience has been excellent as both a retail customer and a student.
As far as my interaction with the owners there...and Im just being 100% honest: Although they seem like decent people, I think the other reviewers are honest when they state there may be a slight level of pretentiousness. In person, I NEVER let on to what Ive done in music, because its best to just listen sometimes; it gives you a much clearer picture of who you are really talking with. Needless to say, the owners had no idea that they were speaking with someone who was in not one, but two relatively popular bands, which were signed to major record labels. I did sense a tone of condescension. Im not sure I would have got that had they thought I wasnt just some dude/kid. Also, I dont think they understand the merit behind certain types of alternative music or sonic expression outside the confines of the jazz circle they deem musically proficient. To be honest, they seem like the type that would consider Jimi Hendrix average...or Frank Zappa average or something. The selection is relatively limited, but you cant fault a smaller store for that. There may just not be the business for it here, as there is basically no creative alt or guitar scene in this town. I do wish they had some more tube amps.Overall, Id still buy from them because the owners are nice enough past the pretense.
Its good to have such store in town, but prices are somewhat high. I wouldnt buy there unless in a pinch.P.S. The supposedly Premium quality guitar cable that I purchased there turned out to be of inferior quality - no strain-relief clamp inside the connector for example. So I am taking away one star from my review. For the price I paid in this store I could have purchased two _good_ quality cables online. Thats too much of a difference to ignore - Sorry! Its OK to ask for higher prices when your product is truly high quality. But when it is not - thats cheating.
My son has been taking guitar lessons at Klaverenga for 3 ½ years and we would highly recommend them. Jim is a wonderful guitarist, and a very friendly, laid-back guy. My son has learned a ton from him and really enjoys his lessons. Although my son is now old enough to drive himself to his lessons, I still go along just so I can listen to them play. Julia is very friendly and often chats with me while my son is taking his lesson. Weve never bought an instrument from them, but they both seem very professional when dealing with potential buyers.
I bought a harmonica, got home, found it was defective (one note didnt work). I went back the next day and asked to return it. The owner refused, claiming Indiana state law prohibits them from taking back items that may have been touched by the mouth. I explained that I am not asking her to resell it, I am asking for a refund, and she said no, she cant afford to do that, and told me to call the supplier. Supplier hasnt picked up (Ive been trying for a week). Bottom line is I bought a faulty item from them and they are refusing to refund me. Its a bit surprising that a small mom and pop store in a small time is willing to lose a customer (obviously I am not going back) over 50 dollars (especially considering I actually bought over 200 dollars of equipment, and it was pretty clear that I am potentially a return customer), but there you have it. Naturally, I am taking my business somewhere where I know that if I buy something defective I can return it. Just as a comparison, another store (not going to name it, not in Indiana) gave me free returns on a ukelele for a year for ANY reason. My daughter smashed it on the floor and they actually replaced it. Of course, I am not expecting that, but I am expecting some minimal accountability and customer service.
Been a customer for years, both for lessons and retail. I was always treated well. It is a pleasure to have the old school type service, where knowledgeable people actually listen and help you with your product selection. They were very helpful ordering a regular guitar in a special color and ordering a higher end specialty guitar. The prices have always been fair. Glad there right here in town, I am happy not to have to waste time and expense driving to Indianapolis for musical needs.
Mr. Klaverenga is very possibly the absolute best teacher of classical guitar available. They have enough teachers there that its possible to find someone who fits you and your personality well. My child has progressed immensely and looks forward to lessons with Mr. Klaverenga every week!
Ive been taking piano lessons with Julia for a few months now, and I have nothing but good things to say. I started up lessons again after not playing for years, and Julia had me on the perfect pace for my experience level. Im now leaning jazz piano like Ive always wanted! I highly recommend Klaverenga for music lessons.
I took jazz piano lessons from the studio owner, Julia, for nearly a year. As a result of her teaching, to put it simply, I play better! I learned to pay closer attention to the notes, timing, and to understand all those dynamics on the sheet music. In less than a year I am pleased with the repertoire of songs I learned. Julia is extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of music, is passionate about music, and as such has high expectations for her students. Thank you, Julia and I look forward to seeing you again.
Great people, great business. You will always be treated well by the Klaverengas. No body will treat you better.
Many off brand instruments with unknown total characteristics. None of which may be known without hearing the instrument. I was told to go to Guitar Center if I wanted to touch anything. I will be sending my students elsewhere
My daughter has been taking guitar lessons from there for the last 6 months until today. Not only had she been taking lessons but also purchased a guitar from them, but today when she arrived for her lessons she was told that she couldnt take her lesson because she needed to pay up for the month (you must pay a month in advance in order to take lessons). My daughter immediately called me and told me this. I called Klaverenga and asked if she could go ahead and start her class and I would be there right away to pay for the month. The woman I spoke with (Owner) said that wasnt possible because they couldnt take the risk that we wouldnt pay and that in order for my daughter to take the class I would have to pay over the phone. No exceptions. I am not comfortable with giving my credit card information over the phone but did it anyways so that my daughter could get into the class. Otherwise we would have had to pay for the missed class AND the rest of the month because you do not get refunds on any missed classes.I would understand this if we were new customers, or if maybe we had had a problem paying in the past, but that was not the case. We have spent over $700 in that store and had been paying and reliable customers for a half a year now.Her excuse was There were 3 people in line, what if they heard me allow you to pay when you got here, I would have had to do it for them too.So what they ask you, as a customer, to do is to pay in advance for a month, trusting them that you get what you pay for, but they are unwilling to trust you for 15 minutes.I would like to stress that the instructor was a great instructor and my daughter really enjoyed her time with him, but the owners (especially the lady) are extremely difficult to deal with. Unfortunately we will be going elsewhere.Again, I wasnt asking for anything more than a 15 minute window to get there and pay them.
Ive taken guitar lessons here since I was 11 and I am now 20. The instructors have always been very kind and helpful. They know their instrument very well, and are able to teach everything from blues or jazz to modern pop and rock. They also have an amazing selection of Taylors and Seagull guitars.
Worst customer service Ive ever had, the woman working was nothing but rude. After reading the other reviews Im not sure why she is still allowed to deal with customers. I fully believe in supporting local businesses but I will never return to this store.
The service is always fantastic and they are very knowledgeable. Ive purchased multiple instruments there and never had any problems.
Very high prices and very pretentious owners. Been playing for 15 years, never seen another place that puts string locks on guitars and gets upset if people walking around town want to play without committing to an expensive instrument
I have visited this place and felt rushed around while simply looking and observing. I love music and try to step into new places every now and then. Didn’t feel welcome here. Also, many people within my community support a very talented musician who excitedly proclaimed to have been hired here to provide drum lessons. He was let go in less than five months because he inquired to the owner about her giving away his business to an outside source. They did not like him questioning their authority (and thus fired him). I felt as if maybe I had had one secluded, rough experience here, but after hearing how they treated my friend, and also after reading othe reviews and nasty responses to those reviews from the owner, I can confidently say that this place is just awful.Julia is classless and will most likely comment something nasty on this review. Please don’t support this business.
I took voice lessons with Julia and guitar lessons with Jim, and found them both to be very knowledgeable and helpful! Thanks guys! :)
The last thing I wanted to do was buy from Guitar Center, but after being chased away rudely from every instrument I even considered looking at during visit to Klaverenga, I decided that maybe this place wasnt interested in my business. I went in there hoping I could walk out with my next guitar.Went to Guitar Center instead, bought my Gibson ES-335, even found a nice little used VOX that I wasnt expecting to buy on top of that. That was a decade ago, and I just had Dons Guitars set the Gibson up again. Plays wonderfully, well worth what I paid for it.I have no idea what the guitars inside this store sound like. Unlike the other reviewer, my fingernails were trimmed and clean.
The woman working here is so disrespectful, treating customers as they are below her. Its sad to see a local business treat their customers this way. Just go to Dons. Klaverenga isnt worth your time, and definitely isnt worth your money.
As a musical novice, I have found the Klaverenga family so helpful in guiding me along with my guitar learning experience. Their instructors are so patient and knowledgeable, and the selection of instruments and equipment is top notch
Hands down the worst customer service I have ever experienced. They treated me, a working professional musician, as if I knew nothing. As a studio musician, it is important for me to test and hear an instrument before purchase. I drove over an hour to this place with intent to purchase a high end Taylor. It is a shame that one of the only Taylor dealers in the area act as if they dont want your business. I am taking my business to SweetWater in Fort Wayne.
Taking piano lessons from Julia has got me excited about music again, their lessons are highly recommended.
I went in today after a horrible experience at McGuire!! I was treated with respect and provided with guidance from the owner as a music professional should do. I will be a returning customer
Great selection of guitars. Owners are very nice and very talented. Great place for shopping, lessons and information.
Do not waste your time by going to this shop. Im an experienced musician, have played since I was 8 and been in music shops on 3 different continents. This was the worst one Ive ever been to.I went in looking for a guitar as I moved to a place without bringing one with me. This put me on a rare occasion where I was ready to buy the first time I played something I liked (as a rule you should always play something at least 3 different times before buying)--even my favorite stores in the world have never had this opportunity from me!When I got there the owner was on the phone and didnt stop for a while. I signaled I wanted to try a cheap guitar from the bottom rack she didnt even want me to take it off myself! I quietly played half of one song, just checking the action and timbre of the instrument, before she came up to me, obviously wanting me to stop playing. I then asked to plug the instrument in. She let me but stood next to me the whole time. When I asked for a strap she said she could not supply one. I asked for some settings to be altered on the amp and it became clear she knew nothing about guitars.I was very uncomfortable the whole time and told her I guessed this was a place where you were not encouraged to play the instruments for long. She then become cross with me, saying that she had lessons going on (Ive been a music teacher and this is never an issue in a good store) and that she didnt want me to scratch the instrument. The latter is a classic line used by just about every sleazeball at rip-off stores worldwide and from that I knew this place is just trying to rip people off and left. Musicians should never believe this line and never buy from a store which tries to tell you this or something like it; a good store will always let you play nearly any instrument as much as you want. If they sell to good musicians they know that good musicians care about the quality of an instrument and not whether or not it is scratched. The reason its worse than a typical rip-off store is that while owners of rip-off stores usually try to be nice and attentive, only getting nasty when you put the instrument through more than the most gentle playing (BTW: musicians should always try the instrument in any way they plan to use it--short of busting it up on stage of course!), this lady was nasty to me from the outset, basically just for walking into her store. I dont know if she wanted to loose the $300-$600 I was ready to spend on a guitar THE FIRST TIME I PLAYED IT, but she did. I would suggest that no other musicians buy from this store. Hopefully we can eventually put an end to yet another rip-off artist who likely preys on the naivete of beginning musicians.--Adam Bruce
Stay away from this place, unfriendly and rude proprietor, they dont want you to to get close to their merchandise. Reminds me of no soup for you, you get the hint if you are a Seinfeld fan - LOL.Sad really, you wanna support your local main Street business, but Ill carry my money to Mr Bezos rather than to that place.Would give negative stars if I could.Would like to add something: its suspicious that there are a lot of reviews which echo my negative experience, and then a few others with five stars. Just think for yourselves, people.Just go in and see for yourself. Interesting psychological study. Lol.
Called in to ask a few questions about starting piano lessons. I was hung up on when I asked for the persons name who answered the phone. WOW!Im a very successful business owner in Lafayette. I run and operate a $4.3 million dollar business and I cannot believe this company is still in business!Heres the EXACT conversation:She answered the phone with an attitude, Klaverenga Guitar & Piano...how can I help you? My reply, Mike...who may i ask am I speaking with? She replied, Klaverenga Guitar & Piano. I said, Ok...do you have a name? She said, This is the owner. I said, Well, do you have a name? Or should I call you owner? She then disconnected the phone call and hung up on me!Good luck to her...but RUN...run far and fast! The reviews are very truthfully that I read, but I figured people are crazy out there. This is the VERY FIRST REVIEW IVE EVER WRITTEN on ANY website!
Offer excellent guitar lessons. Good selection of merchandise too.
The instructors are great and friendly, but the owners are elitist snobs. I dont know why they think they can treat customers so badly.
The reviews about snotty owners are all correct, and I cant help but think the positive reviews are from friends of the owners, not genuine. They are hard to talk to and seem completely detached from the needs and desires of regular musicians. The prices arent especially bad but I dont feel comfortable giving money to people that seem so cold, judgmental, and unrelatable. I would recommend anyone interested in music supplies check out Sam Ash in Indy, or preferably, Sweetwater in Fort Wayne. At Sweetwater, every customer is assigned a sales engineer whom you can call at *any* time to talk about new gear, ask questions or seek advice, and their selection isnt even comparable to Klavarenga or other Lafayette music stores; its so much better. And theyll let you play every single one of their thousands of instruments without ever pressuring you or seeming rude. Why go somewhere to be condescended to and sold gear from such a small selection when places with better selection and better prices work so much harder for the business?
Did not care for the owners, but the store had what I needed. I will probably never go back.
Rude and disrespectful to customers.
Arrogant and rude, the man was formal and wasnt rude, dont touch the guitars, they are going to complain if you arent there looking to buy, basically you should leave and go to McGuires, they are more personable and about your needs, not theirs.
