This was the highlight of my trip to San Diego! I’m so bummed we found this fantastic place on our last day. I was able to taste the quesitos, the pastries with guava, the pastelitos, had a delicious cafe con leche and last but not least the cubano sandwich! Everything was phenomenal!!! Seriously my favorite spot from my trip! I was able to bring some pastries back home, all the way to the east coast and had my friends and hubby try the guava pastries, they loved it! Staff was extremely helpful and friendly! Everything about this place is wonderful.
I wanted to write to commend great customer service. I called on the phone to ask a few questions and even though I could tell they were busy, the lady on the phone was more than welcoming and not making me feel rushed, answered all my questions and really wanted to help. I appreciate great customer service . The cake was not too sweet and was delicious. I wanted to make a s’mores flavoured cake. The toasted marshmallow ( outside icing for the cake) was different and interesting and absolutely delicious. It was gooey and made the cake just like we wanted like a s’more! We will be ordering again. Thank you
This is an amazing place. Everything wonderful. Individual cakes are fantastic. I especially like key lime, Hawaiian, danishes(well their not Danish of course, theyre Cuban). Savory cheesy turnover like things were so good. But my favorite is the poppy gluten free muffins. Gooey yummy surprise. And Im not vegan or gluten free but appreciate the idea
I went for the first time today. I am of Cuban descent born and raised in Miami. These are by far the best pastelitos in San Diego and better even than at least 80% of the pastelitos you can buy in Miami. Most places in Miami now buy ready to bake goods and bake in the morning and theyre mildly stale by the time you eat them. I was shocked by how good these pastries were. Soft and warm with just the right amount of crisp. We had the queso, queso y guayaba, and carne. My favorite was the carne. The picadillo recipe was on point and is described as moms recipe (I would say it is very much in line with my abuelas recipe). It has raisins in it which can be as polarizing as pineapples on pizza but it is perfect in this pastry. We also ordered the España sandwhich which is a Spanish omelette (tortilla española con cebolla y papas) and it was incredible. Tortillas were a staple in my family growing up and this one did not disappoint. We finished out our order with a couple cortaditos that were brewed and mixed perfectly not too much milk or sugar and the perfect size to finish out the meal. I truly can not wait to go back. My hats off to the chef who has truly mastered this art and the flavors. Buen provecho a todos los que coman aquí!
This place is distracting. I had a plan to swing by right after the post office to get a meat pie and a coffee. Then I walked in. And was immediately distracted by all of the beautiful desserts. Which one? Good luck. So I got three. And almost forgot my reason for coming. Meat pie. I’m having family visit me tomorrow so they will probably eat those aforementioned desserts. They will not get to eat the meat pie however. Because they are all gone. Wow that was good. My plan now is to drag them in so they get desserts of their own. And their own meat pies. And maybe I won’t forget my coffee this time (clearly the fault there was all mine)Wow again and thanks; Kirk
This place is awesome and makes me think of South Florida where I use to live. Thanks Mandy who was our server and the many recommendations she introduced me to. Oh so good!!! Well made Cuban sandwich!! Toasted just right and the meat was just deliciously melted to every bite. The sea salt cookie amazing!! You can taste every ingredients that went in. Every bite was lovely. A very well presented place and you can see everything in there is done with love and talent. The music is great!! Cuban all the way. Definitely will come back and try some more yummy desserts.
Check your orders before leaving the site. After a drive to OB from east county area I was assured my entire order was in the box. I just opened the box and I was missing a pastry. When I called, the gal sounded doubtful of my report. I had to firmly state that a pastry was missing. While she did offer a refund, what is of greater importance is some training on how to talk to and interact with customers.
Authentic Cuban flavors meet the chilliest of OB vibes. Make sure you try the pastelito (meat pie) or the guava cheese pastry--so good. Dont forget the cortadito--you wont find a better one for miles! I grew up in a Cuban family near famous Cuban restaurants in LA and this is my new favorite spot for all my favorite Cuban treats in San Diego!
Friend and I stopped by for some pastries in a weekend morning, heard great things about this place. We ordered the Raspberry and passion fruit scone and a cielo de limon. Both had a great combination of sweetness and tart. First Cuban pastry spot I’ve had the chance to eat at and it did not disappoint.
I finally visited Azucar after a few recommendations from some friends. The pastries are amazing! I bought two cheese rolls, a peach scone, a guava and cheese pastry, and a passion fruit scone. They were flaky and had a smooth and creamy cheese filling. They were so good, that my friend and I inhaled a few on the car ride home. The guava pastry was delicious, but my favorite was the passion fruit scone. It was just perfect. The fruit filling was fresh and tasted unlike any other scone I’ve had. The shop was clean and organized. Ruby was a great help, and friendly as well. What a great bakery. Eat up!!
Just came out of store saturday 10/23 4.01PM and extremely unhappy with the customer service. I never ever write reviews but really felt like writing one as I felt extremely dejected. I drove for 30 mins to come to this bakery since someone recommended me. Since there was some traffic I reached at 3.58 PM. I knew what I wanted so I immediately got to ordering but the lady on the counter was cranky for some reason. I tried to strike a conversation but received a very weird reaction. I asked if I can order a coffee but she didn’t wait a second to say straight NO. I understand that the store closes at 4 but if you have a customer in the store who came before 4 the least you can do is talk nicely for 5 mins. I still ended up tipping 15% since I like the bakery. But this is absolutely not expected to treat your customer so arrogantly. I am not coming to this bakery again.
Cuban food is sadly not very well represented in our culinary tour. Was very excited to try Azucar for this reason. Had a beautiful Latte, a guava cheese pastry, ham croquettes and a pork, cheese and pickle empanada. All delicious and felt like a culinary vacation, while never leaving San Diego. My daughter devoured a Pineapple Coconut muffin, a guava pastry and a peach buckle cake. We took home a birthday cake for later and again delicious. Want to come back, as other guests orders of Cuban sandwiches looked tasty and mouthwatering.
It’s only the best desserts you’ll ever have. AND the best Cuban sandwich!
I love everything at this pastry shop, and I was excited today to order coffee and a sandwich, but you dont accept cash??? I was so disappointed because I only brought my phone and cash on a walk with me. Please change to accepting cash. Your customers will love having their freedom and choice of payment.
What an awesome find! The Cubano pastries are heavenly!
Everything here is beyond amazing. Each dessert is worth buying! They’re all delicious!
Good God. Do yourself a favor and try one of everything. The savory pastries and sandwiches are delightful but the desserts...the desserts are divine.
UPDATE: Azucar is still amazing!Azucar is a special place. There are tons of bakeries, restaurant, donut shops, etc, that make solid food. But, a place like Azucar is rare. So few places consistently such excellent food (especially baked goods), while maintaining their friendly character and warm ambiance. Azucar just cant be beat.I always look forward to stopping by when Im in OB, and honestly I make trips to OB just to get a hit of their righteous Cubanos. They are my favorite anywhere. Their mojito cookies changed my life (literally), and the coffee is delicious and authentic. My buddy is Cuban, and very, VERY, picky (snobby?) about his Cuban food and coffee. I just dragged him in and he was blown away. They have a variety of flavors and textures difficult to find at other bakeries. I always end up walking out with five pounds baked goods. Its official, Azucar is the best. Check it out!! Quick, quit reading this review right now and go down there now!
Esta Cubana thinks this place was AMAZING, AUTHENTIC and is a hidden gem. Would have loved to meet the owner, maybe next time! 🇨🇺🇨🇺🇨🇺
With a great assortment of desserts and excellent coffee, this place is without a doubt one of the best confectionaries in San Diego. There are lots of different flavors on the menu such as mango, coconut, chocolate and lime, so theres something for any taste. My personal favorite is the Hazelnut Crunch, which is a heavenly sandwich of crunchy hazelnut base followed by a chewy salty caramel layer and topped with quality dark chocolate ganache and glazing. Decorated with a gold-sprayed blackberry for a stunning presentation! Wow!Make sure theyre open before you head to scratch your sugar itch though; Ive been very disappointed a couple of times to find they just closed 10 minutes ago.
Had three different sandwiches and 4 different pastries. All of them were great. We will definitely be back again.
Where has this place been all my life?! Small space with friendly customer service. We stopped in for some sweet treats. The Artemisa was absolutely delicious with its Cuban rum cake, malibu coconut custard, rum flamed pineapple, topped with whipped cream and toasted coconut. The mango cheesecake with shortbread crust was amazing as well. Neither one was overly sweet which was a definite plus. Will return to try their Cuban sandwiches and more yummy desserts!
Amazing! Had the elote quiche tart.... so tasty!
Can you see why it’s hard to decide what to get when you’re here? It’s all delicious. The Cuban meat pie is is savory. The champagne peach scone is the best! I love the gluten-free banana honey chia muffins! Make it a Friday morning ritual to stop in and try a few different pastries or desserts. Today I had the Gone Bananas and a cortadito with coconut milk. The Gone Bananas is banana mousse shimmering with dulce espresso glaze accented with a chocolate decor all sitting on top of a crunchy pecan praline bar. I’ll try the ham & iberico cheese quiche or tomato ricotta basil quiche next time. Planning to have lunch here soon so I can try the Cubano sandwich. The line can get long here, but it’s totally worth the wait.
Everything at Azucar is incredibly delicious! And the staff are friendly and helpful. Love coming to visit any time Im in the area
Felt good about safety practices, DELICIOUS pastries, good coffee. I highly recommend the meat pies
If you’re in the mood for something to satisfy your sweet tooth that takes shape in pastry form then come here! What a delight it was during my visit to San Diego. Easy to get to and parking in the area. OB has a lot of character and if you’re looking for something outside of the downtown or PB area then do yourself favor, or should I say flavor, and make a visit here. Everything is home made and the sandwiches looked good too. I had the flan and a coconut pastry along with a cafe con leche. It was sweetness overload for me but that was my own fault.
Goodies of all kinds, coffee drinks and more. Enjoy flavors you wont find just anywhere, like guava-filled flake pastry. Lines on weekend mornings as the number of patrons inside the store is limited during the pandemic. Worth the wait. You can also order ahead.
If you like sweets, this is a must try. No matter what I get there, I have to also get the guava and cream cheese pastelitos. The best!
Oh so many delicious goodies, yummy sandwiches, and friendly folx.
Great pastries, just wish they still had the Choc Chip Banana Chia muffins 😊
Bought pretty much every cake and pastry they had. The sugar high will keep you coming back for more 🤯🤯🤯
This is hands down the best bakery Ive ever been to. As an aspiring bakery-owner myself, I visit a lot of bakeries for research (and mostly for joy). Ive traveled a lot and have been to dozens of bakeries that people have said were the best, but they were usually just okay, or had one or two stellar items and the rest were mediocre. Azucar truly is the best. We ordered four different kinds of pastry, and each one was phenomenal. Honestly, I could keep going on about this, but no one reads long reviews. Just go to Azucar and have amazing pastry!!I wish I lived here so that I could learn from Vivian!
The pastries are amazing specially the quezitos
Try everything, you can’t go wrong. However, I particularly love the meat pies and guava cheese rolls. I’d also recommend going earlyish on a weekday if you want to avoid the long lines.
Coffee is incredible. Highly recommend the cafe con leche- they can even do with almond or soy!Pastries are to DIE for-- there are some sweet pastries that are very well priced like the guava and cheese. The Cubano pie is incredible but a little pricey. My husband and I went here almost every day for a coffee and pastry on vacation. Service is great!
Looooove this spot! Would give 6 stars if I could. One of my favorite coffee stops. I typically get their oat milk latte and it is well balanced, creamy and delicious. The shop is also filled with the most beautiful and tasty treats.
Fav dessert shop in the world, great gf greats too!
I grew up in Miami and this is some real high quality Cuban style pastries. I recommend trying anything in their pastry case. Cuban turnovers. Guava cheese pastries. Everything is solid. One time I ordered Cuban bread with butter and it took 15 minutes but all the pastries are real real good.
Fantastic decor, creative assortment of pastries, clean setting. I had the dulce de leche macchiato, the Cuban meat pie which was wonderful, and the guava pastry, which was also delicious. I can see that parking can be an issue here and there might be lines of customers depending on the time. We came here at 10am and there was no line but once we sat and got our food, there was a line out the door. Overall, loved this place.
Crazy people love crazy food come here if that sounds about right. 😲🤯
I always have loved AZUKAR, but I stood in a line outside for a half an hour in the freezing cold, just to be told by a customer that they were only excepting Venmo. Whoever was working there should have had the decency to pop their heads out and tell us all. They waited till I finally got to the front of the line to yell it right before it was my turn to go inside. There system had been down all morning. Rude, no way to fun a business. I know things are crazy right now but we were all patiently waiting out there in the cold. There are several very good coffee spots on Newport that I could have supported.
Azucar in OB is absolute fire. The guava + cheese pateries, meat pies and cafecito are everything you need on a Sunday morning.
Delicious coffee and super delicious GF scones.
One of the best bakeries in the city, does not disappoint!
Delicious food!
Delicious cakes, nice people, close to my homeBe back!
Great spot to pick up some excellent coffee and great sweets. They also make rad cakes.
OMG their pasties and cakes are delicious. Especially their guava and cream cheese pastry, red velvet cupcake, confetti cake, yogurt with fruit and granola which is made by the cafe itself and although its crowded its not the workers its the 6 foot rule that stops people from interacting. its sad in away because we as humans arent wired that way we need human contact, interaction, laughter and sharing and our fellow politicians have made that impossible because of fausi. We can barely understand what somebody says to one another let alone the kindness in a humans smile. I miss that and the laughter we all once shared, azucar brings some joy into our hearts. Thank you azucar
This is just amazing. My wife came here to get desserts for my birthday.... I came back the next week 😄. I havent had one bad thing yet!I now will always get the cafe Cubano every time, and a pastry. Right now I like the quiche. Next on my list is the guava cheese. For dessert, I love terrun de havana.Their website (mobile version) needs some work though.
All their stuff is superb! Over the years their prices have been dramatically climbing and dont come as often as a result.
This place is dangerous! I tried the toffee oatmeal cookie with sea salt. Also picked up an ice coffee. There was a lot of toffee (yay) and the sea salt was a nice contrast. My friend tried a blueberry pastry which had tons of fresh blueberries. This place is dangerous! You cant go in and not eat anything.
So I told the cashier to order for me and she had me get this super bomb coffee and this pastry that was so good. If someone said “hey you want a croissant with pickles and meat?” I’d tell you to go die in a fire but oh my god that pickle and meat croissant thing was bomb AF. 10/10 I’ll be back again.
Great coffee and pastry shop
So delicious! From their pastries to their decadent desserts, this place is tops. The staff are super friendly and answered all my questions as some of the Cuban offerings were new to me. The Papas Relleno and Cafe Cubano were a delightful breakfast. I And the meat our and Guava cheese pastries I took to go were perfect snacks for a walk on the pier. It was a delicious food adventure and I cant wait to come back and try more!
Everything in this shop is both beautiful and delicious but I cannot recommend the Cuban Meat Pie enough. The pork is slow cooked to perfection! I took my mom on a weekend long foodie tour of all of SD and she even said that this place was the best.
Great assortment of items to choose from. Im a sucker for the cream cheese puffs.
A San Diego Gem!Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Their pastries, desserts and other food items on the menu take delicious to the next level!
Drove far to try it out due to the good reviews, but after I waited in line outside for the two customers to leave, I was ignored inside for like 5 minutes without acknowledgement. Pastries were good, but expensive and I found a small hair sticking out of the filling of one of the croquettes after I bit into it at home.
Their Cuban pastries are to die for.. literally.. if I had to choose my last meal, Azucar would be at the top of the list!
Super delicious treats! Awesome customer service!
OH. MY. LANTA. Azucar is AMAZING!! My husband and I were watching the movie Chef, and when Cubanos came into the film, it got us thinking. Hes from Ft. Lauderdale/Miami and Cubanos are his all-time favorite sandwich. I am an uncultured swine and had never had one before, but it looked so good I HAD to have one. Welp, it was 7pm at night on a Saturday, so we made plans to get one for lunch the next day. ENTER AZUCAR. We got a Cubano with plantain chips, each a Cafe con Leche, and I got a Artemesia pastry. Now, we parked fairly close, so we went back to the car where I proceeded to burn the bazinga out of my tongue on the hot sandwich because I WAS THAT ANXIOUS TO TRY IT! From what I could taste, it was amazing. I let it cool while I ate the plantain chips and FELL IN LOVE. It was all so dang good! I usually have my coffee with vanilla syrup, so I wasnt sure I would like the Cafe con Leche, but it was the best coffee Ive ever had!! The sandwich cooled, and my husband finally took a bite of his half and all he could say was Oh.....OH, YEAH. SPOT. ON. I saved the Artemesia pastry and remembered I had it in the refrigerator in the middle of doing homework, and all I can say is AZUCAR IS LIKE STRIKING GOLD. Now whenever we take our dog to the beach in OB, were stopping by and getting a Cubano. *Insert Homer Simpson drooling*
Really good. We had their guava, & guava cream cheese puff pastries along with a dog biscuit. Not 5 stars because I wish they had even amounts of guava and cream cheese on each side of their pastry
Quite possibly the best pastries Ive ever had the privilege of enjoying. Visited five times over three days and absolutely loved every single thing I tried!
This place shows real expertise in their field. They dont overpower their products with sugar to cover over incompetence. Both their sweet and savory pastries are crafted exceptionally. Order ahead to avoid the long lines, though.
Great small cafe in the middle of ocean beach. Wonderful selection of parties and Cuban desserts
The pastries from azucar are so good !!
Excelente Cuban Tres leches was delicious, Tiramisu was a bit salty:(, chocolate cookies passed the test, and the guava pastry very good
This is one of my favorite places in San Diego. I literally have not had a single thing here that wasnt amazing. If youre a first timer I recommend picking one or two things out of the front display, a Cubano Pie, and a cheese roll. Select a coffee or tea. Take a seat and enjoy slowly.
Cafe Cubano and guava and cheese pastries
I would work for this family for free, just to learn how to make food like the food you can get here.... seriously, it is delicious. The Cubana is so good, her pastries are not only beautiful, but they are tasty, and, I do not know why, but the coffee here is simply the best.
This place is a must, delicious. try their xheesecake, limited parking. crowded. but worth the wait.
