First time at store today. Was interested in selling my Yamaha handmade classical guitar or putting it on consignment. The owner was very kind and honestly told me that he could try to sell it on consignment, but that I could do much better selling on my own. After that, he gave me plenty of his time and lots of great, detailed advice on how best to sell it, all while helping other customers and people in the back. Hard to find honest business owners these days who clearly put the customer first, but The Folk Shop was a pleasant exception. If I later decide on selling via consignment, they will get my business!
Would highly recommend. Wonderful people who believe in expressing yourself through music. Let my kids play around and we ended up buying her a violin.
Ive lived in Tucson my whole life, and have never been to the Folk Shop. Ive been missing out. I took my adult, sight impaired daughter there, to trade in her electric violin, and hopefully come out with a wood one. We came out with so much more. We were both treated so kindly and they went above and beyond to help us. When she decided on one, one of the employees took it to tune it, and started playing it. My daughter had tears in her eyes, she was so thrilled with the sound. From start to finish, it was a hugely positive experience, and we will be back !
Experienced bluegrass musician. Called about coming in with some basic questions. The woman over the phone is exceedingly unprofessional and coarse. She should retire—or be retired, whoever she is.
Friendly service! The instruments are well maintained and the staff are knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend them to a friend.
Great local spot that lets their freak flag fly ! Awesome and unique selection with friendly staff. Will definitely be returning!
Just had a set up on my Yamaha and it sounds better than I thought possible. Great price as well. Highly recommend this place!
The Folk Shop. The Folk Shop is a creative store with good old fashion values. Quality, friendliness, respect, dignity, and more. They take good care of their store, merchandise, and customers. They have the best and widest variety of musical instruments compared too any other store ive been in. Ever. From wide selections of banjos and guitars. From mandolins, to kalimbas, bongos, flutes, xylophones and so so much more. I love this place and thr people in it. And thats my favorite part truly. They are the nicest, most respectful employees and owners i can say ive had the pleasure of meeting. More like friends than customers, and more like instruments of passionate antiquity than the cheap-os you see everywhere else.
Cool little shop, not that wheelchair friendly but I was still able to get around. The staff I interacted with was very knowledgeable and helpful just looking for a harp for my daughter and he helped get it set up and answered all my questions and my daughters.
I am absolutely incredulous as to how condescendingly I was treated over the phone by this place. I arrived with my Taylor 312-CE looking to trade up and quite likely spend substantial chunk of money. I noticed the posting on the door that read (I may be paraphrasing) masks required even for those vaccinated. I have been twice jabbed with Pfizer, but no problem. I get it. I understand it. People may not be fully honest about their status and might contaminate others. I have zero issue complying with the policy The posting also read do not knock; call to be granted entry (again, I may be paraphrasing, but this was the gist). I keep a KN-95 with me in the car but couldnt find it. Maybe it fell behind the seat or something. I ring their number. A woman answers. Convo goes like this: Hi, I noticed you require masks even for the vaxxed, which I am fully, but I cant seem to find mine here in my car....Im here outside....do you happen to have any masks there inside the store that you could pass out to me”? (like logical, sensible merchants across town, the state, the country have in abundance in case you forgot or can’t find yours—sterile ones for the taking in boxes) “If not, I dont live too far. I can run home, grab one and come back. The woman on the phone raises her voice and says NO YOU NEED TO WEAR A MASK and abruptly hangs up!! Um, I think I got that part and more than amply communicated it back. Wow. And delivered with a tone of voice akin to Mrs. Gulch from Wizard of Oz. I was perfectly polite, acknowledged the policy and was willing to go out of my way to comply. This is not only ridiculously bad policy, but there was not even basic intelligible, lucid communication on her part. Not the conduct of a sound minded individual. Now, for some background. I have never made any major purchases at Folk Shop. However, I have patronized them over years--even before I moved to Tucson. The first time, I was recording an album visiting from Austin in 2014 and needed a dobro capo. The engineer called around to Guitar Center and few other places. They didnt even know what a dobro was, much less a dobro capo. Folk Shop to the rescue with a Paul Beard capo, just like the one I had forgotten and left back in TX! Ive been there since for strings, straps, stainless steel slides etc. Never ever the slightest of problems. What happened today is totally inexcusable. I myself have been fastidious and a stickler about masking and distancing throughout the pandemic, but this kind of post-mandate fanaticism, illogic and outright meanness is beyond the pale. They certainly dont want my money or any of my future business. To hell with this place. l’ll buy a guitar from Musicians Friend before stepping foot in there, even though I prefer to shop locally.
Putting an inanimate object ( guitar) in a five day quarantine seemed silly....especially after the tech spent 20 minutes in extremely close contact doing the inspection. The work was fine, the price was fair. The extreme lock down just turned me off....
Had great experience well priced. They were very helpful
Service was excellent. Answered all our questions. Limited amount of people in store. Call to make an appointment
Went in to buy a uke and got lost in their exotic offerings. Friendly vibes from all the staff despite me touching an unreasonable amount of products during a pandemic. Instrument tech offered quick look at a banjo and tricone resonator I had in need of setup. He did some quick and satisfactory work to make them both more playable while I browsed and he was reluctant to accept any money. I plan on returning with fistfuls of cash for future instrument purchases. Buying an instrument from a place with a skilled tech on hand is invaluable. Thank you for existing The Folk Shop!
When I went in to trade in a guitar it was the best service without any hassle friendly staff who tune your guitar or instrument when you buy it and even let you play it before you buy it. 5/5
Excellent knowledge from beginner to experienced, great staff, brilliant selection. All round easily the bezt in Tucson
Great place to get your kiddo hooked on something GOOD. Very nice people, too.
Always lovely...wonderful place with wonderful people...so much to see!!
Friendly staff. Low prices. Great atmosphere.
Helpful, knowledgeable, and kind. Awesome shop!
Found what we wanted. Very good at social distancing. Friendly and knowledgeable
I went to three other bigger music stores in Tucson looking for a nut extender to play my Telecaster as a lap steel, which none of them had, before I stopped by The Folk Shop which Id never been to before, and the man in the store knew exactly the part I was talking about, told me some cool stuff that I didnt know about lap steel guitar, and was genuinely nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. I dont know why I hadnt come in before but I could not have had a better experience. The rest of the shop was really cool too and had a bunch of cool gear that other places dont have.
Very rude disrespectful because I was asking for a part and I didnt have a mask and I wasnt trying to go in the place without permission and they were just very rude very very rude and I didnt understand I was thrown off by it. Yelling at me for no reason all I wanted was a part I didnt even try to go into shop told her Id wait outside because I didnt have a mask she slams door in my face. So I go get a mask and they wont even deal with me I was the up most respectful and didnt deserve that. Very very rude!!! Ill never do business with them again.
Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Really glad I found this place. I also really appreciate the steps that taking to keep people safe during COVID.
Amazing shop for used and vintage instruments of all kinds.
Shop local its the best.
I love this place. It is magical-
Love this place. Great vibe and a great selection of instruments and other odds and ends. Highly recommend!
Taking pandemic precautions the staff is always helpful, kind and friendly.
Fun music shop with a bunch of oddball (and not so oddball) instruments. Great place to stop in and browse for something unique.
Best music store in the world! The staff has always been incredible, and the gear is to die for. Their repair shop, and selection are truly world class. Theyre single handedly keeping the plectrum banjo alive in AZ! Im sad I dont live in the state anymore, but plan to be back soon!
Great store many unique items. Super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff!
This place needs a few more customers that are interested in older instruments. Nice people. Bought a older repaired guitar and gig bag. Perfect for someone who just wants to see if they like playing a guitar.
This is a nice local folk music shop. If it had more choices Id give it 5 stars, but a great place nevertheless.
Helpful and courteous service
Extremely friendly. Good selection of many types of folk acoustic instruments and they let you play most of them. Somewhat limited array of different brands, thus 4 stars. Im looking forward to doing more business with them.
LOVE this little Tucson treasure! Be sure to stop in and see all the eclectic, funky goodies these guys stock in their super fun store. Great prices, wonderful repairs on my viola and classical guitar. Dont shop the generic big box stores, keep small shops like The Folk Shop in business for future generations to enjoy.
Always love coming here! Have gotten a number of musicsl instrument gems over the years.
Was looking all over town as a long shot to fix up a uke from the 60s... Got tossed around a while by the big stores then ran into this place. Literally the paragon of a beautifully run business! Amazing staff, amazing store, AMAZING prices! Had all my missing tuners, strings, and even a fret board for less than what others would charge just for strings... I wish I could rate them 6/5 stars...
My go-to guys and gals for anything bluegrass---especially banjos. Great people, great stuff!
My favorite shop in all of Tucson! Paul and Brenda and their staff have so much knowledge and experience. If they cannot sell you something that you need or repair something that you have, they know who can. A new treasure seems to find me on every visit. Maybe that is because Paul and Brenda know many of their customers and buy with them in mind. A wonderful place!
The owners are gems and can repair many instruments- replaced the skin on my djembe and it sounds amazing
Great music shop with very friendly people to help you. I highly recommend them.
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. No pushy sales. Helped pick the right instrument for my daughter and even gave some tips because they play the same instrument.
Beautiful place. Kind people. Real good affordable instruments
Best customer service I seen in a while. I definitely back to buy more, recommend.
The best local music shop in town. Please support your local stores. Is a real gem in Tucson.
I love this shop. The staff is great. A great place for anything folksy. I always walk away smiling.
This is the coolest music shop in tucson. A must see. Awesome owners, very friendly, and they let you jam.
Really nice staff and products. Reasonably priced
Well, over the years Ive bought, sold, and traded with Paul and really wouldnt do so again. The last guitar I purchased there had broken tuner barrels and more important, his pricing and moods vary wildly. Certainly lots to look at, but no great shakes in terms of quality or pricing.
You feel at home when you walk through the door.
I love folk shop all way fine plesent people to attend you i been going there for about 6years thanks for all your help will be back
Youll get great, personal attention at either location. Prices are the best and the staff is friendly, informative, and just seem like happy people
Neat shop, friendly staff. Went in to see if they could help with my Djembe drum repair, but they dont currently have anyone who can replace and restring the skin for the drumhead ☹️
