I use AAMCO for my state inspections. However, when I had an issue with alignment and brakes, they were open and honest about recommending another store (Firestone and Midas) who they send vehicles to anyways. I felt very valued that AAMCO would be so considerate and honest. Will work with them again. They have my full trust.

They were honest and did not perform any repairs with out talking to me. The car was so far gone that we took it to the junk yard. They could’ve just slapped a power steering line on as requested but they were honest about the massive amount of work needed on the car. The car wasn’t worth fixing.I really appreciated their clarity and honesty

I have a son who attends JMU and weve needed auto repairs during his tenure there. Finding a reliable and honest shop in your hometown is hard enough, but try to find one in another town and its like Russian roulette. Cant tell you how pleased I am to have found this Aamco by reading reviews like this. Donnie and Carlos are helpful when making repair tradeoffs and decisions and take the time to explain everything to you in language you can understand. I recently came in the a check engine light and the diagnosis was not good. I ended up selling the vehicle vs. the repairs and when I went to pick up and pay...no charge! They value a lifetime of service over one-and-done. I wish I could clone and move them to my town!Hope this helps when deciding on who to choose for your next repair.

I had my transmission completed in Charlotte at an AAMCO location. they were polite, timely, and effective. two weeks later the transmission had issues. I was able to take the vehicle to another location in Harrisonburg where they did a rebuild at no additional cost and in 5 days. Excellent service. I would highly recommend using AAMCO for transmissions.

They’re decent enough at being polite but will 100% lie to you about work you need done. They told me I was just barely legal with my rear breaks when I got my inspection but then I took it somewhere else to get it done and they said they were perfectly fine and didn’t need replacing at all. Don’t trust them.

They did a good job with my van when the transmission died on the interstate. I am from out of town, and they were the closest place I could tow my van to. They finished the job in less than a week and sold me a warranty for a decent price. I drive 500 to 1k miles per week and the rebuild is still smooth after a couple months. I think it will last for another 100k miles.

BEWARE, Do not go here! He wanted to repair my sons 4x4 drivetrain and it was only a button on the dash pressed in that my son was not aware of, this button kept his SUV in 4x4 locked differential mode. The owner told me it was stuck in 4x4 and they would have to pull things apart and test them to repair it and his mechanic certainty would have checked the button on the dash when I suspected that to be the problem after being told the truck was stuck in 4 wheel drive.I had arranged for a tow to a local shop with a great google maps rating after getting the vibe when I asked him if he could check the button and then reading other reviews. Best yet is my son got there before the tow truck, pushed the button in and it was back to normal as he tested it and drove off. The only good thing I can say is that they did not charge for their preliminary check but they were certainly ready to start charging money for repairs when it was just a button pressed by my sons right knee when he changed his clothes in his SUV. Take the time to go to a shop that has a well earned reputation. My son took an Uber from school to test his car at Aamco, the Uber driver was informing him not to use Aamco on the way over. The driver said they have $1,000 itus, they try to charge at least a thousand for coming in the door.Updated Review:Where you went wrong: I called and specifically asked you if you would check the 4x4 lock button on the dash before you did any additional work or testing. This was a Very Simple Request. You stated that the technician that inspected the vehicle diagnosed it stuck in four wheel drive and he is very competent and certainly would have checked the button on the dash. You then went on to say it was probability a solenoid valve or something mechanical in the drive-train that was keeping the vehicle stuck in 4x4 locked mode and you would have to go further into it to find the issue. The only issue was the button was depressed on the dash. My 19 year old son was able to climb into the vehicle as I was on the phone with him. He stated, I just pushed in the button and it stuck further out after pushing it in. He then went and drove the vehicle forward and reverse a few feet and the binding issues that he encountered a few blocks away from your shop no longer existed. He dropped it at your shop as he first encountered the binding issues a few blocks away form your shop. Not sure why this is hard to understand. I gave you credit for not charging anything, but you get no credit for me asking for you to check one button. You would have 5 Stars and a great review if you would have checked the button and charged me a fee for the time associated with the first failed inspection and then my follow up request to check one button on the dash.

BEWARE, this is one of the worst shops in Harrisonburg. Nice and friendly until you dont want them to do the service. Had my Ford Explorer towed to them. Tom said the motor was shot and needed replacing it had metal filings in the motor, I have replaced motors in the past and know you wouldnt see metal on a dip stick, if so very rare, can see when oil pan is pulled which it wasnt, so I was suspect at that point. The price quoted was $2500 for the motor and $1800 for labor, but if needed additional parts that would be extra, thats $4000 for a replacement (can buy the whole vehicle for that) I questioned the price of the motor, but Tom rechecked and said it was correct. My wife and I discussed it decided to tow it to another location. That is when it got bad. Tom threatened to tow the vehicle IF AND I QUOTE, needed that one space that the vehicle was setting in before tow truck arrive. I was there at 2:45 pm and tow truck coming at 4:00 pm. I paid him $70 for his time. Now the vehicle is at the other location and ONLY needed a head gasket replaced. Thats around $150.00 to $200.00 depending on quality, plus labor. If you go there you better get a SECOND quote.

In December of 2016 I took my car to AAMCO because I needed my alternator replaced. AAMCO told me that it was definitely my alternator (my mechanic back home agreed with them) because all of the lights on my dashboard lit up while driving. They did the test and didnt find anything wrong with the alternator so it must be electrical. It took them about 4 hours to figure out that it WASNT an electrical problem. Finally they retested the alternator and it turned out it was the alternator. I (unfortunately) got AAMCO to replace it. Might I add that they charged me (over $500) for all of these services even though they stated they knew it was my alternator from the beginning. Right now (January 2018) my car is back in the shop because when the alternator was replaced THEY DIDNT DO A GOOD JOB REPLACING THE ALTERNATOR (quote from my mechanic). I 100% believe they took advantage of me because I was a female, college student. DO NOT GO TO THEM. I am now having my alternator replaced AGAIN even though AAMCO replaced it a little over a year ago. Poor service and poor customer service.

These people are as crazy as their prices. I took my Bronco here once to check the brakes and the staff was fighting because a technician had forgotten to replace the transmission on a vehicle before the owner was called to pick it up. The manager started throwing things and screaming and hit one of the employees. They wanted $700 in labor to replace my brakes, so I did it myself for $80. Went back again to get an inspection and they were gossiping about clients and making racist remarks. One technician made fun of someone for working for a black man. I couldnt believe what they were saying in front of me. They charged me $20 to replace a light to pass inspection and said my car was leaking oil. Gave me an estimate for $1500 in repairs including replacing brake fluid and power steering fluid. I said no, got an oil change, and ended up paying almost $90 anyway. These people are crazy and charge way too much for labor. Got my car home and it hasnt leaked oil since. Funny!

Thing started rattling in the Rockies but trucked on for half the country. I decided to take it to the shop the day after arriving in Virginia. Massive repair, transfer case and differential related parts totally torn up plus the knock sensor needed replacing. Got it done and got the truck back. Still rattling, took it back and they spent 3 dasy with it, drove it 150 miles and had 3-4 people looking at it. They fixed one noise and called me. They were at a loss, but the truck drives fine .I get it back and low and behold its a seat that had a loose metal part, and something making a bit of noise inside the dashboard, which stemmed from taking the dash off the day before leaving California and putting it back on in a rush. These guys are great, and genuinely care and want to help. This is unlike ANY mechanical experience Ive ever had and I dont want to take my truck anywhere else.

So my family and I are on vacation in Shenandoah National Park and our F250 transmission front pump seal started to leak. The 17 quart system lost 2 quarts on the way up the mountain. When we first called and told them it was the front seal, they quoted us $700.00 give or take alittle. once they pulled it in and looked at it, they confirmed it was the seal and that the transmission was fine but the price doubled with no explanation given even when asked. Once the work was done the price paid was $1,126.04. Less then 2 mintues later we get another call stating they forgot to charge some things and they needed another $115.03. We pulled out of Aamco and in less than a mile the truck can not be pulled out of drive. We can not park the truck or change gears. We call them and head back. The transmission tech says the linkage fell off and he grabs a zip tie. So he caused the problem because the transmission had to be pulled to replace the seal and he fixed it with a ziptie on a $1200.00 dollar job....where is my original hardwear? I have to go up the mountain tomorrow to try and bring my camper down and I am wondering, WHAT else he put back wrong.

Turn on my car and the needle instantly dropped to empty... when I contacted them to ask what their excuse would be, I was told simply I dont know what to tell you, we only drove it for a test drive. .... Not blaming the owner, but obviously someone took my gas and while its only a few gallons, the fact remains that my gas was STOLEN from my car one way or the other

Great service and prices and they do way more than just transmissions.

Garages often get a bad rap for something or other. Cars are a different animal to work on as problems are not always black and white. I have always been treated fairly at Aamco, Harrisonburg. We have our work van serviced there, and have always been pleased. They even went above and beyond to point out a fatal flaw with the transmission on our Honda Odyssey, that had a simple fix of installing a exterior transmission fluid cooling thingy (that is probably not the tecnical term). When you get an oil change here go for the BG oil change they make great stuff.

The worst place in Harrisonburg to go for car issues. They take advantage of college students especially and have also been really really rude to everyone I know that has been there. They’re a scam. All the positive reviews on here are probably fraudulent

The service at AAMCO Harrisonburg is excellent. I am a student at JMU and this is the one place I trust to work on my vehicle. The staff is very friendly and they tell you in detail exactly what the problems are with your vehicle. I highly recommend this place for all car services needed.

Terrible experience. Took my vehicle in because it was making a strange noise. They said they drove it around and heard no noises, but charged me for other fixes. A few weeks later my vehicle broke down in the middle of nowhere, engine completely blown. Thanks.

I own a car dealership in Staunton and we have Tom and the crew work on all our Transmission issues. He have saved me literally THOUSANDS over the years on what we thought might be big problems that turned out to be small ones. He can be trusted!

I had called for an appointment on Jan 1 to have my car inspected on the 2nd. They called me in the morning to confirm. I told them I found a coupon on their website for a free State Inspection and they said bring it in. Donnie Ange took car of me right away and I said Id be back for the car. He called me within a half hour car was ready to go and cost me nothing!!!! This was the easiest State Inspection for my car and it was absolutely FREE. No gimmicks.
