Wish they had somebody on call 24 hours for my needs. They are always helpful when open and available
Old school bike shop... Probably felt retro in the 1970s, too. Great folks who love keeping bikes running smoothly.
Who ever answered was an absolutely rude and I would suggest never ever doing business with them! Absolutely unprofessional and heard him say something under his breath
This is a great place! I can here to buy some used quality parts from them. They definitely had what I needed and they were kind enough to help me when they had other projects to do. I will be coming back and be telling others about this place. One thing that I appreciated most is that that they tried to keep the style of the bicycle the same. Just shows that they care.
Cool dudes. They have tires and parts for old bikes. Very cool. Very fair pricing. Highly recommend!
Tim and Tree were really friendly and helpful! My bike needed a new wheel and tube. Their scheduled service was backed up a couple weeks, but they worked me in and had me fixed up in a couple hours!I was so pleased that I bought them some brews across the street.
Co ops are the best ops! They talk you through different ways to do what youre trying to get done, factor your budget, and will fix something quick if it didnt go quite right. I take my bike back when I need to, and feel good about it.
Sold me a defective brand new bottom bracket due to a bad internal bearing and then accused me of a improper install. The internal bearing had significant slop that could be felt when pedaling. Then when they removed the bottom bracket, they kept the main piece and showed me the plastic ring on the other side to say it was damaged. They also told me the bottom bracket they took out was the incorrect bottom bracket and then told me at the end of our interaction which one I needed and it was the exact same one they gave me before that was defective.Another occasion I went in to buy a brake caliper and the gentleman looking for parts was cussing and throwing parts around. Someone else that was there had to proceed to help me because of his “bad day”.I have gone to this co op for years and will not be going back.
Fast friendly service if not busy, good prices, choice of new or used parts, depending on stock, experienced bike mechanics.
The old gray mare ain’t what she used to be. This was a horrible interaction, but I don’t believe in ratings. I will play the “been coming here for 15 years card” and this place has a tendency to attract employees lacking customer service skills, with the exception of Tim and Harriet and usually Noah...and the lyrics ninja guy (I’m sure there have been others). They must have a worst customer service award. It’s clear they don’t care about reviews. I was entertained when the employee not wearing a mask backed up 2 feet from someone wearing a mask. Unless you are looking for a very specific component and you know they have it, go to River City, Gladys, Sellwood, or literally any other bike shop.
Avoid at all costs ive never seen recycle bike shop employees act as high & mighty as these losers. Just go to western bike works I promise you it’s much more worth it!! Employees are actually helpful not belittling OHHH and they don’t smell like DS
I came to get my vintage bike brakes looked at, specifically stating the brakes squeel super loud and that was the major issue. I just bought it from another bike guy who had tuned it up before selling it to me, had new brake pads, gears were greased and great, new brake cables etc..the only issues was the brake noise. The shorter petite male at Citybikes said it was my steel wheels in combo with my brake pads making the noise, and that Id need new wheels and probably brake pads. He was very brief and gave me little information, just presented the orange brake pads and said those are what originally came on this bike. Ended up spending around $260 for parts/labor. Took it home to ride. On my nxt ride my brakes were literally squeeling as before. I was irate. I brought it back in and explained that I had spent all this money here to fix that specific issue and it literally wasnt fixed at all. Another larger bearded employee said oh, its probably just that your brakes needed to be toed-in/adjusted. Sure enough he adjusted my pads in 10 seconds and actually took it out and rode it to make sure there was no noise. He let me go free of charge, but I was left wondering why the first guy charged me so much for a bunch of stuff I probably didnt need, when he couldve just toed-in the brakes, and didnt actually check his work to make sure the issue was fixed. Anyone that is a serious bike professional would take the bike out and test it after fixing it, especially for brake noise. So needless to say I wont come back. Just really disappointing because this shouldve been a no brainer and way less costly. Some people are all for co-ops, but in reality, co-ops just make it harder to fire problem employees with a history of bad customer service.
Friendly staff and superb fix up on my bike. Very prompt. Thank you!
Good selection of new and used bike parts, knowledgeable and helpful staff. Love it
I have been coming here for years. Fairly decent selection of items from locks to lights, friendly and knowledgeable staff. I always prefer to support an LBS over Amazon (eww) or a BBS, so I always stop here and the CCC before looking towards other options.
I’ve been going to this shop for years now. I bought my bike from them, and I’ve been taking it in for annual tune-ups ever since. Their prices are fair, and they have a VERY quick turnaround time. I messed up my brake arms after a recent tune up and they fixed it for me very quickly so I could be on the road the next day! They’ve also installed a new rack and spoke lights for me. No matter what part of town I’ve lived in I will go out of my way to ride here. Highly recommend!
What a horrible place...People are in absolute ridiculous fear there only letting one person in their shop at a time which is totally unfounded ways to act ..horrible punks
Went in to get a new derailer, and when I got my bike back, it kept clicking on every single pedal, as if it were trying to shift gears. Turns out they stripped my crank set. I probably have to get a new one now . Also, they’re not that nice
They have the best selection of used road and mountain parts that I can find in the neighborhood. The employees act like theyre gods gift to the world of bike mechanics so if you have a question make sure you get all the terminology spot on or they make you wear a dunce cap and stand in the corner. Im mostly joking but seriously guys, buying a UBI course doesnt make you a physician. A lot of your customers have worked as mechanics and getting snappy at a bad question makes you look like a dork to them.
Love this place. Knowledgeable staff and a wide range of new and used parts.
I called this shop across town because my local shop is difficult to get into. I was pleasantly surprised that they could get my tube changed. I arrived and they had a mister set up!! What a great way to cool down! They were friendly, welcoming and of course went the extra mile for me today ! Thank you I will drove across town any time for their great service!!
Go here if youre looking for price gouging & terrible customer service from an overfed lawn gnome/proud boy looking dude.
Gentlemen there could have been more helpful. Won’t be going back
They had what I needed and it was affordable 👍
Great shop with helpful, friendly and knowledgeable staff.
They were great. Super friendly, kind and very helpful
I am troubled to write a bad review on this place as I have had good experiences here. What I have noticed though is that there seems to be a major inconsistency regarding the quality of service you’ll get depending on who is behind the counter on that specific day. There is a young mechanic lady and a tall middle age bearded man who have been very kind and helpful. The other man/men however, oh boi..The first issue I ran into months ago was the difference in price quotes. I was quoted $55 over the phone to swap cassettes between two wheels and to brake a chain (tools I don’t have at home). This seemed outrageous for the amount of work/time required to do that. Curiously I tried coming in again in person last week and the gentlemen did the work for $25 including pulling a crankset out. Just oddSecond issue was regarding cutting the steerer tube on a carbon fork. I was quoted around $50 for the work which I found fair so I went ahead and dropped off the bike. I was very specific that I wanted the matching top cap I provided to go on there. When I picked the bike up I noticed that an old scratched top cap was installed instead and he said “your fork is not compatible with that cap so I went ahead and installed this one” I was charged an extra $20 for the used expansion plug and the beat up cap for a total of $70. Certain that this wasn’t right, I went to river city bikes And learned that my top cap does fit on the fork (duh) but citybike just proceeded to finish the job with whatever used parts they had in stock instead. River city pulled the part from citybike and installed to correct plug that works with my bike for a mere $20. Now the fork cutting is costing me $90.The mechanic lady at river city said that the new plug is resting uneven on the top of the fork steerer by 1-2mm indicating that my really expensive ENVE fork was not cut properly. Ughhhh??Third problem was just two days later when I came in with my girlfriend and her new bike to purchase fenders. We physically brought the bike with us to ensure that we were given the correct/compatible fenders for a disc brake bike. The gentleman looked at the bike (nice tall bearded man) and gave me a set of fenders for it. Upon opening the packaging at home a day later, I noticed that the front fender required to be screwed into a fork’s rim brake caliper hole which the disk brake fork does not have. Upon reading the instructions, we realized we were indeed provided the wrong set of fenders. Frustrated with the service at this establishment, we went down to river city to pick up the correct fenders.I called today to return the incorrect fenders and whoever picked up the phone was incredibly dismissive of my situation and kept questioning me like I was wrong. He said we can only take it back as a used part, I said it was never installed. He then said they are not taking returns at all due to COVID. Changed his story very quick. He proceeded to say “ hey buddy, I already told you we are not taking returns, is there anything else?”. I said I would keep the fenders and let every online review place know if my experience with this and he said “okay bye!! Love you!”I am certain that if it was the young lady or the nice guy who actually sold me the fenders, this could have been handled much more differentlyI will not be returning to this place ever again!
Love these guys! They offer all the best advice and have no ego! :)
Was able to pick up part for my vintage Cannondale. Good crew of guys there and recommend them.
Great place for bicycle people of all types. Has plenty of parts & accessories at fair prices. The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is because I got an arms-crossed, condescending vibe for not having the best bike and asking questions that are too amateur. Besides that minor, repairable incident, the place is well deserving of your business. I highly recommend.
The Mothership of Portland bicycling celebrates perfectly simple, elegant, and artful quality new and used bicycle parts tools supplies and accessories with deeply knowledgeable staff to solve all sorts of problems with creative fixes for human powered machines of every stripe
Hob-nobbers, not snobbers.
The staff here are great! The fella helping me took the time to explain things without making me feel like the whole exchange was a sales pitch. He was just talkin about bikes and educating me :) As a result, I will definitely be coming back once those repairs and replacements are needed. Thanks yall!
Theres a reason Ive been coming here for the last four years. Great crew, and there work is exceptional.
Honest people who did great work. We will absolutely be back!
The place to get repairs, used or new bike parts, or just say hi.
Great spot with all the used parts I can handle. They do tuneups and other work and always have a good idea or suggestions when not building a traditional bicycle. Great resource for all your cycling needs.
Quick and quality service.
Today was my third time coming by for bike repair. They were able to get me in to true my wheel and fix a broken spoke.Prices are reasonable and the staff knows there stuff.I think its cool they have both new and second hand gear for sale. Pretty cool, Portland Bike repair shop.
Great local shop, ended up having the kinda rare part I needed.
Going to a cooperative is a completely different experience than going to a corporate chain. They are focused on doing things right over selling you things you dont need
Exceptional service at a great price. Ive found them to always be pleasant and helpful. Most recently, I had my bikes brakes adjusted and Ryan even cleaned most of the dirt off my bike, swell guy! Previously theyve let me borrow tools to do my own work, who else does that?
Always good work and working class prices.
Theyre always great.
Very helpful employees and I found everything I needed
Very helpful and great customer and bike service. Amazing prices too!
Best source in town for used parts. Unlike most mechanics these folks take diy-ers screwups in stride
Great place to get new & used bike parts!
They were extremely friendly and helpful. They were honest, without unnecessarily up selling. My repair ended up costing less than their original estimate. The store has a very welcoming vibe, and not intimidating (like some bicycle shops in the area can be).
The mark of a really good bike store is to buy a used bike from you at a fair price. City bikes did this for me, not even a trade in.
I bought a bike from these folks a few years back, when they still had the full shop down the street. I really liked the variety, and quality of service at the time. It looks like theyve refocused themselves on repair and maintenance, not so much on selling bikes. They do have a few bikes for sale, and they appear to be in good shape and at reasonable prices. If youre looking for a bike you might swing by, but I think youd be better off bringing your repairs here.
The people that work here are so incredibly knowledgeable and helpful with problem-solving the many odd issues Ive had through the years. Ive been frequenting this shop for the last 10 years or so and it has consistently been amazing. They have an inventory of new and used parts and will purchase quality parts from customers in exchange for store credit, similar to the way buffalo exchange does with clothing. I love this place and am very appreciative of all the people who work there that have helped me over the years. Thank you!!!
I would never recommend this bike store. Stuck up people. Should never run or own a bike shop. Trust me very stuck up
Its my daughters local neigborhood shop there in Portland. One day I visited and bought a pair of Harley Davidson hard saddlebags for $20. I really dont think they were designed for bicycles and found them in a nook and cranny on a shelf; but Ill make them work on one of my novelty bikes...Theyre so cool! So my daughter got a Wald grocery basket and a Topeak grocery basket and some fenders there...thankyou for taking care of her! She rides her bike with her dog to work everyday.
Great group of people working here. No condescending attitudes. This is the first place I go for anything bike related.
This is a nice bike shop. You can maintain your bike there, use their tools and part prices are cheap to reasonable. This shop is for the dedicated bike commuter, not a lot of parts for exotic mountain bikes, some decent parts for modern road bikes to classic bikes. Parts are new and used.
Ive been going to city bikes for over 20 years now back when I used to restore and recondition 30s-60s era bikes. Their inventory of useful things is amazing, amassed over the decades. Ive been a bike messenger for a long time now and I get most of my parts, tires(even the tubes they put out for free mostly just need a patch), and the occasional service for things I dont own specialty tools for from this place. Their trade in and buying program makes it easy to get rid of what you dont in trade for what you want. They cover 90% of what youd ever need for riding around in the city.
A great place for used bike parts. Decent prices. Requires knowing what you need. Be prepared to dig through bins - the reward is usually worth it.
City Bikes rocks my world! Nice people (including female mechanics) that will fix your bike or help you buy a new one. This shop is the happy middle ground between fixie bike snobs and Spandex yuppies.I ride my bike often but am not a hard core cyclists (I get passed going up Williams). This shop makes me feel comfortable asking questions and getting help without worrying about using all the correct bike terms. And there are more ladies working here than most bike shops in town. AND it is not pricey. What more could you want? A puppy? Because lately there has been a puppy there.
So helpful every time. Thanks Tree!
Used to be awesome... Now middle of the road. Not much more to say except the broke a$$ commuter customers are getting bumped by the yuppies who crave being seen on the latest toys.
Good quality craftsmanship on utilitarian transportation.
Bike snobs, make you feel stupid if you ask questions, and I wasnt able to return a 10 dollar shifter that was broken.....
Amazing people 😍 great service ❣️
Fast, accurate, friendly & very affordable. I brought my old GT Mt Bike in for a tune up. At first the ETA was 1 week, but two days later I got a call that my bike was ready to rock. The bill was less than estimated too. I enjoy this shop, the owner employees & the local. Ill be back. :)
Super helpful staff and really great bikes and bicycle supplies!
Super qualified bike advice, and all necessary parts under one roof. The last shop in town selling used items and not gouging their patrons. Great bicycle shop!
Im very upset with my experience here. Was here recently and was treated like dirt. I would honestly say this is the worst shopping experience ive ever had. Very very rude people working. If you arent a bike expert, you shouldnt come here. These guys except everyone to be experts. If I acted like this at my job I would be fired on the spot
Amazing and incredibly helpful staff.
Way too much attitude for me. Ive been to this location twice and both visits I felt the cold shoulder. Maybe I look too square? Who knows. I wont be back to this location. Their other location is excellent, though.
This is my favorite bike shop in Portland. Sometimes the bike dude gets fussy and impatient, but I understand hes probably super busy and cant answer everyones questions. Make sure you know what youre looking for when you go in there, and dont waste their time. They have a lot of customers, and its because they run bike shops right!! Good products, proper prices, and skilled at bike mechanics. Love the house, it looks great!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I took my 78 Colnago into the shop yesterday to have some new brake levers put onto the bike. Immediately upon walking into the store, I was confronted with a glazed over look and a sarcastic sigh as I approached the counter for help. The guy behind the counter was named Benjamin. Ignoring his obvious condescending stare, I stated that I wanted to have new brake levers put onto the bike. My request was greeted with a quick, and firm No. After what seemed like an eternity of him staring blankly at me, he reluctantly walks around the counter and starts looking at my bike. Why do I feel like I need to APOLOGIZE for walking into a bicycle repair shop to PAY for help?!After a half energetic approach to helping me, he starts writing me the work order. I ask him if I need to replace the brake cables long with the setup. He visibly rolls his eyes at me. At this point, Ive had it with his awful condescending attitude and I ask him Is there something wrong?. And against all forms of legitimate customer service, he tells me I AM THE PROBLEM. As a retailer working in customer service, I can tell you I have NEVER been treated like this in my entire life. At a maximum I took about 7 minutes of Benjamins time, and did absolutely nothing but listen to what he had to say. He then promptly walked away and passed me off to someone else in the shop. This shop was one of my favorite shops for bike repair in all of Portland. But my experience with Benjamin will make me think twice about giving my business to this shop if I see him again.
Very helpful, and great options for new and used bikes and accessories.
Ill start with the NOs: This is not your usual bike-shop; folks here can help you out to figure out whats going on with your bike and will give you some advice. If youre looking for a hands-off bike fixing or maintenance, you can still go there but thats not their vibe.Although Im not a mechanic, Im a biking-enthusiast who wish to get involved in fixing the bike, so there is a lot I can do by myself: if you are too, than this is the right place for you.You can borrow lots of tools and pick advice from them. I wouldnt say they have an outstanding customer service, but they are definitively having a good time and doing what they want.
Great local bike shop that serves the community in so many wonderful ways. Our kids love their summer camps.
These guys were friendly, helpful and knowledgable. I felt well taken care of when I bought a lock and other accessories for my bike this week. I will definitely be returning if I ever need new parts or a tune up.
Just stopped in there without an appointment and they were able to fix my bike on the spot. They were also very affordable and kind. I will be going here from now on whenever my bike needs fixing!
Yo I went in to get a $15 repair on my flat tire and this place charged my card a week later for $80
I revived a bike with high quality parts for much less than expected and the worker was v helpful and nice
This place is great. I came out from work today and has a totally flat tire. I arrived at Citybikes and about five minutes later I had a new tire and new innertube installed for just under 20 bucks 😀. I will be back.
So helpful and honest.
This place is always on point. Helped me out from having to purchase a brand new rear wheel by shaving down my spacer and re-truing my rim.
Only place in town that had the part I needed and for less than anyone would order it for, also more knowledgeable than any other shop out of the many I visited
Great selection of products but service sucks. If you want to feel bad about yourself because you wear a bright jacket then go here. Ill be taking my business down the street to Universal Cycles.
All hustle and no hassle. Great little shop to take ol reliable to get some lovins. They have used parts and new accessories too.
Amazing place. Awesome people.
I came about this shop from price checking a few local bike shops for a tune up. Hands down, the pricing at City Bikes convinced me to bring my bike in for a full tune up.I was greeted by Benjamens sarcastic face and I felt unwelcome. Walking into that store was like stumbling into a biker tavern dressed as a Jehovas Witness. Maybe Im not cool enough to bring my bike in here? Anyways. After a few short moments of talking to this kid, I walked out of the store. I couldnt handle the attitude, and I ended up spending more on the labor at River City Bicycles. I might have paid 40% more on my maintenance, but it was worth it to keep my dignity.
The folks at Citybikes Workers Coop are awesome!!! We take both our bikes there and purchase needed gear from the Coop, not to mention bike tuneups and repairs.
Great service, good folks and one of the OG Portland Bike shops! Support your local collective!!
Good prices, REALLY helpful & never patronizing :)
Super awesome bike store with wonderful and helpful employees. If given a choice between bike stores, this one should ALWAYS be your answer!
Everyone here is super helpful and friendly. They provided a ton of assistance and advice during a recent bike build for this relative noob.
Super small bike shop. A good selection for the space. Expert advice and repairs.
OMG. This shop is dangerous to my pocket book: Not because its expensive, but because it is a seemingly bottomless pit of all the parts I need to restore ALL the bikes Ive accumulated over the years. Ive found the staff SO helpful (when zIm doing a repair in front of the shop with borrowed tools) I almost feel guilty about it. The QUINTESSENTIAL PORTLAND BIKE SHOP. No kidding. Worth going a little out of my way for.
Top notch bike collective, great selection of used parts too
These guys where grat the lent me tools and a stand to put on a rear rack and sold me atube
Bicycle parts exchange, place to wrench your own. They only do store credit for returned items.
