Our guide, Jesse, was the best. Incredibly professional, patient and respectful, which meant a lot to my wife and I. He took us to a beautiful part of the Elk River and though late in the season in low water we caught some great fish, large cutthroat, rainbows, brookes and even white fish. Can’t wait to return and do it again. I highly recommend these guys.
Hunter set up our last minute half day trip and did an amazing job. Nate was our guide and was great. I couldnt have asked for a more patient, knowledgeable guide, who made it fun - since this was only my second time fly fishing, and first time wade fly fishing. Everyone was super nice at the shop and very helpful. Thanks guys for a great time, well definitely be back!
Rob and Andy were great!! They had knowledge, were great coaches on technique and were very patient with a first time float customer. They definitely know where the fish are, how to set you up for success and if you can get a line in the water, you will catch fish. Although the focus was on catching fish, Rob and Andy made the scenic float a great outdoor experience with additional information and conversation. I highly recommend Steamboat FlyFisher.Roger
Since we moved to ATL I started fly fishing because its difficult and frustrating, which is how great fishing should be... Thats why I tap into this resource as a wonderful way to find clarity and peace. I am still very much a novice fly fisherman with limited casting distance and less experience with landing a large trout (Lets be honest, I have been fly fishing for three years and have only caught like 4 trout…) It’s just different than other freshwater/saltwater fishing, I didn’t grow up reading streams and rivers in mountains… I grew up reading the current and the tides in bayous, bays and the Gulf of Mexico, … I dont fish to catch fish so I dont mind the frustration... It drives me! Anyway... my wife and kids were in Colorado for some needed R&R, and I booked a trip to fly fish out of a boat drifting down a river (This is called a “Float Trip”) The object is to drift a fly at the same speed as the current and cover a lot of water feeding hooks to hungry rising trout… If you have never seen a large trout eating on the surface of a river… figure out how you can… that alone is worth sitting quietly and watching. My booked trip was to fish down the legendary Yampa River near Steamboat. I have read about this river and this fishery so when I had the chance to go, I had to do it. The trip was booked back in April and I was set! Of course, that was before a record drought and heat wave west of the Continental Divide changed our plans… The water was too low... so my dream trip on the Yampa was canceled. The Team at Steamboat Flyfisher let me know, but offered a different experience on one of their leases this was a short drive north of Steamboat near the Wyoming boarder on the North Platte River… Like all responsible outfitters, they could not guarantee success or weather or the skill of the Angler (Me!) We went fishing Sat. 6/27/2021… There is a concept in fishing called time on the water (TOW). If you fish you know what I mean by that. It is the lesson my wife and I are teaching our children about fishing that translates to the rest of life. Even if you are not good at it, if every time you do it, you improve a little and take those lessons back to the water with you... If you are patient and you keep at it one day it will come together… at 7 and 9 they do not show frustration while fishing, they are sincerely glad to be there! This was Popa’s Father’s Day trip. no little ones to teach, I got to be the student. To be honest, I really have not put in enough TOW with a fly rod, not enough to justify what happened.I am drafting this experience as a thank you note to my guide, Rob Burden. I have fished many times in many places as both the angler and the outfitter. it’s a blessing when you get to fish with a patient expert who’s coaching and (More importantly) on trip casting lessons and support with how to properly mend dry flies and work streamers through the current… Things I didn’t fully understand how to do… Things it takes put a novice angler in a position to do things I really didn’t deserve to do.Thank you for changing my perspective on what fly fishing is Rob, as if I needed more of a reason to learn how to catch trout on a fly rod!-Raymond S. Blanco Jr.
It started the day b4 I was guided. I bumped into a young man on the Sarvis. We shared stories of the evening of fishing. We hit it off right away both sharing the passion of fishing. He recommended me to make the most of my trip to use steamboat Flyfisher. Thinking it over I took his advice and requested him to be my guide. Wow wow wow..... Gabe Foster thank you for not only honing my skills and teaching me your techniques.... but putting me on the best trout fishing ever!! I will see you folks next year! And Gabe too!!
It Was a fun time. Wish our guide would help, he wasn’t very helpful and didn’t know the water he told us. Was a good experience tho.
Wes our fishing guide is the absolute best. I have been on several guided trips and his knowledge, hospitality and patience is unrivaled. Thanks Wes and we will be back.James&Charlene
They spilled the beans on rafting the yampa without purchase! They are friendly and will steer you in the right direction. Definitely a premier shop.
Wonderful experience for my sons 11th birthday. They were able to arrange this for us at the last minute. Ryan was our guide and very patient (for us first timer fly-fishers) and knowledgeable about the Yampa river and the preferred areas to fish. The highlight of course was my son catching a large brown trout! made his day. Thanks Ryan and Steamboat Flyfisher company.
Stopped in to the shop for the first time ever and was greeted right away. As I have never fished in Steamboat before, I asked an employee what some go to flys were for the water just outside the shop. Instead of letting me go fish water that was too hot to have success, he told me another spot to head to that was close by, showed me how to get there, and set me up on a couple different flys that he said he personally used at the spot. It wasn’t three casts in and I had my first fish. The flys continued to be successful for the rest of the day. I highly suggest you stop in to the shop for a great experience. Make sure to ask for Wes. He’s the man.
Stopped in for some local advice on the area. Super friendly and helpful staff. Military friendly.
My wife and I chose to go fly fishing with Steamboat Flyfisher for our 15th Anniversary this past weekend. We could not have chosen better. Andy Best was our guide and even my best attempt to compliment both his skill and professionalism fall short. Andys patience never tired and he left us with a truly remarkable experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives. He complimented our minor achievements with genuine high fives and shared our ecstasy of major accomplishments with pure joy. The shop headquarters treated us as friends and in addition to remarkable fishing advice, helped acquaint us with the Steamboat Springs area in advice on what to do and where to eat. Five gold stars for these folks. Absolutely unbeatable!
Had an excellent trip with a truly professional guide. We went in mid-August with very low water level in the Elk River. Timing and conditions were against us. Our guide had the knowledge and experience to help us catch fish all day, including a beautiful 26 rainbow. I would definitely recommend this outfitter to anyone.
Very knowledgeable and helpful.
These guys are very down to earth and helpful. My goto no matter where Im at.
Great shop with everything you need.
First time fishing Steamboat and the surrounding waters, so I went with Ohio native Doug Garber. We got along well, and regardless of the freezing temps (18) and cold water (37) we maintained high spirits. Doug knows his stuff and we were on fish almost immediately. Started off on some nice fighting Whitefish, made some fly changes and the Rainbows started hitting. Landed a few really nice fish, and lost a couple of monsters. The shop is well appointed, the staff super friendly, and the guides (Doug Garber) are on their game. Cant wait to hit the water with you again Doug on my next visit to see the kid.
Great place and service!
Great shop
Great local store. Friendly, local staff with flies that fish well on the local streams. Pricey, but worth it.
My brother and I went float fishing with Captain John Livingston as our guide. The trip was fantastic and Captain John was outstanding. I had never fly fished I was able to still catch!
Stacked with everything you could ever need or imagine for Fly Fishing ! And the staff especially Mike and Mike are totally knowledgeable and totally Cool !!!
Great staff. Mikey did a great job. Thanks
Beautiful shop. Great choices and options for both men and women anglers. Good selection of price points. Great gear for all skill levels. Very friendly, relaxed and helpful staff
Most beautiful place yeou have ever seen. All homes covered in snow, saw mule deer feeding with cows. Slopes were white. Several feet of snow. Just absolutely gorgeous.
Hooked me up with a fishing license, gave me some good local knowledge.
Extremely helpful staff willing to talk about fishing spots for more than a few min, and the same goes for fly selections and tying advice. Good selection of gear as well. We went on a guided trip to a ranch nearby and cought some great fish as well
The best fly shop in town. Remember, you can only biy your fishing license with cash!
Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Exceptional inventory of flies.
In my experience, the best fishing guides. Who are happy to help you find a spot to fish on your own and pick flies.
I am an avid Fly Fisherman and have been in shops all over the West. Many have a lot of the same gear, what makes this shop exception are the people! Knowledgeable, friendly and laid back. They even let me charge my phone while I grabbed lunch. They have earned my loyalty and it is the only shop that I will go to when in Steamboat!
These guys put you on fish. The staff was first class. The gear they provided was excellent. Came to town with no gear. Left with great family memories and a pile of monster fish caught. Thanks guys.
Im a big fan of going to most fly shops if for nothing else to see what other types of gear I dont have that I desperately need . . . or really just want ;)This was a very nice shop. It was well stocked with apparel, clothes, rods, and flies. I just couldnt quite give it 5 stars because the gentlemen working there seemed relatively disinterested in anything. He was definitely nice enough and, in his defense, it was Black Friday, but still. There were almost no customers there so its not like he was completely slammed.Like I said, he was definitely nice enough and the shop was well appointed so I will definitely be back. If I could give 4.5, I would, but what I think makes so many fly shops so great are the people that work there who are always wanting to help, willing to chat about that new fly, or just shoot the . . .You definitely wont be disappointed here.Tight lines!
Friendly staff, nice assortment of products.
Great people!! My guide Matt is everything you want for a great day on the river. SFF is worth my time to travel in from East Tennessee to fish the Yampa.
As far as Ive seen its the only real fly shop in Steamboat that keeps it all about fly fishing and not about retail and selling you a bunch of name brand stuff that you dont need or touristy crap. The staff was very welcoming and knowledgeable. The place felt like a small town fly shop but looked like modern comfortable professional shop. Shop here above all the others.
This is THE fly shop in Steamboat and always has been. The others are for tourists. The crew is always happy to help and share a contagious passion for the sport. (I hope I dont have to wait another 15 years between visits.)
Great shop, great guides, great gear and even better tips... Must stop if you like to fly fish.. Actually if you like catching monster fish this is your best stop in Colorado.
One of the best fly shops in the mountains. Great knowledge of the area and surrounding fisheries. Great advice and always willing to help you out
Great fly shop, large selection of gear and flys, the staff will also advise on local water and flys to use
Best selection of fishing gear. They specialize in fly-fishing (as the name would suggest) and everyone there is an expert. Super friendly staff that will help you with anything.
Friendly staff. I cringed as I watched my girlfriend and sister barrage the employee with a million questions about the cute little flies but the employee was happy with their enthusiasm and curiosity and helped with all questions. Great selection and gear
Steamboar Fly Fisher has the best guides! They are very friendly...try going out on a drift boat, can you say FUN! Matt is really fun to go out with. A lot of flys to choose from. Very, very knowledgeable staff that are friendly and not just trying to make a quick sale. Remember to bring cash for fishing licenses...they make zero money on them and will lose money if you swipe a card.
My preferred store for several years. Very trustworthy and knowledgeable and kind.
We visited all the shops in the area this was a three very nice shop do not share much information
Perfect shop.. Perfect staff.. if your new to STEAMBOAT or a long time resident this is a m8at stop.
Well the half day trip to one of their private streams exceeded all expectations. Our party of three people caught 40 very nice sized healthy trout in a beautiful stream on a pristine autumn day. Thats one landed fish every 6 minutes and we are beginner/intermediate flyfishers. Definitely a special day.But one cant expect that luck every time. What you can expect everytime are the expert attentive guides that work at Steamboat Flyfisher. Our guides, Andy and Rob were wonderful. They guided us in fishing the deep holes, kept adjusting flies as the day progressed, and instructed us in technique. One in our party had some balancing challenges crossing the stream on slippery rocks and Andy would offer a hand to assist; was much appreciated. Thanks much to eveyrone at Steamboat Flyfisher
If you are in Steamboat and thinking about fly fishing you must use Steamboat Fly Fisher. I went twice and took my 10, 15, and 16 boys and it was their highlight of our Vacation. We caught lots of fish!! We sucked at Casting yet our guide was patient and continued to teach. If you are thinking about fly fishing.....use Steamboat Fly Fisher and ask for ANDY!!!!
Everyone in this shop is so friendly. They want to help and it shows! One of the best businesses run in town.
Had them re-string some line, staff was friendly and helpful.
Great staff and services. ..Im leaving the waters of Florida to fish Steamboats finest waters...see you Monday morning. ...
One stop flyfishing shopping! The people here are so helpful. Love this place!
My son really liked this shop. Very helpful!!
They are very friendly very helpful give us a lot of good advice about fly fishing and where to go and what flies to use in places great visit
This is my go to shop in Colorado! The staff is always super helpful and friendly! The Flyfisher is many levels above the next best shop in Steamboat.
Stopped by again this trip to the shop. My wife and I were welcomed at the door, and our questions about flies were answered directly with no pressure or "you gotta have this". Getting a day license for my wife was a breeze, and she found a pair of women's sunglasses she liked. This shop is always like that, friendly, well supplied and dead on with advice. We caught nine fish a quarter mile down from the shop 10-18 inches on the patterns we bought. Wow!
Very helpful. Good advice. Nice selection of merchandise.
Super friendly and liberal advise!
Johnny and CrewThank you for the good advice and friendly service. Cant wait to come back!
Good stuffs
Great shop and service. We did a full day trip with Tim and would highly recommend it!
Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Always able to answer any questions and guide you to exactly what you need.
Best shop in town.
These guys have leases to fish the best properties in and around the Steamboat area. Service and equipment offered is as good as it gets.
The best guides.
Great service and the guides are the best!
Nice Guys - Really Nice Shop. Thanks for the advice.
Friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and truly customer focused...with the retail portion of the business and with guiding. This is the only fly fishing business in Steamboat I’ll use.
Great service and selection, but prices are pretty high...
Good food. Good waitress service.
Dan is great guide for all levels.
Half day trip and first time flyfishing for both my 19YO son and I. Great Experience. Our guide Matt Moline was knowledgable and very patient, explaining the basic techniques. Throughout the day he provided one on one advice on how to cast, drift etc... By the end of the day we were doing fine. We fished at the top of stagecoach Lake and caught 15-20 trout between us. It was a very enjoyable day on the water and exceeded expectations. Highly recommend Steamboat Flyfishers.
Great shop with a great staff and owner.
This is my go-to fly shop in Steamboat. I make the stop every time I go through town just to talk fishing and be a general nuisance and they havent asked me to leave yet.
